EP 14🌿

I stared at the man that had just stepped out of the car, and saw him draw a handkerchief from his pocket and sprinkle something on it.
“Get in,side that car, I won’t tell you twice,” Emeka s¢ræmed at me. He pointed the gun at me as his hands shook.
I nodded, and began to walk towards the car. Emeka stood back to ease himself, facing the bush. The knife I had stolen from Papa Ugo’s hut reassured me as It was carefully hidden in my wrapper. As I got to the car, the man standing outside caught hold of my hand and made to cover my face with the handkerchief. As he caught hold of me, I quickly fished out the knife and planted it in his stomach, and in the same motion got a hold of the gun he had hidden in his trouser.
The man’s s¢ræm of agony was loud and terrifying in the chilly midnight. Emeka turned quickly, and on seeing what had happened to his friend reached for his gun. Before he could lift the gun, I quickly planted a bullet in his chest. At that moment, I was glad that I had followed the village Hunter’s to go on their hunting rounds, and had learnt how to shoot with precision.
Emeka dropped to the ground, like a leaf from a tree. The driver of the Sienna having seen what had happened to Emeka and his friend, quickly zoomed off amidst a cloud of dust.
At that moment, my heart was in my mouth. The man I had stabbed was obviously dead, as he wasn’t moving at all. Emeka was probably dead too, I couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by fear.
I dropped the gun, and began to run away from the scene. I was glad that I had escaped the sad fate that could’ve befallen me in the hand’s of Emeka, but I couldn’t help but feel guilty that I had shot my Best friend without a second thought.
Tears streamed down my face as I ran and wondered why Emeka would want to harm me.
The sound of an approaching car made me stop, as I threw my hand out to wave the car to a stop I turned to the bush, but Emeka was gone…

EP 15🌿

As the car slowed to a stop to pick me, I stared around me, confused about how Emeka could suddenly disappear without any trace. The car that had stopped had a man and a woman in it, each staring at me like I had fallen from the sky.
“Are you okay? What are you doing out here,” the woman asked with suspicion written all over her face.
I forced a smile and nodded slightly.
“I got robbed around here, my bag’s and belongings are gone and I don’t have anyone who could come get me. Can you help me?,” I lied while forcing myself to cry in order to gain their sympathy.
It seemed to work, as the man turned unlocked the door’s, and asked to get in.
“We’ll take you to town. This road isn’t really safe.”

As the car drove off, I turned one last time towards the s₱0t I had shot Emeka, but in the dark night I couldn’t s₱0t anything.
“He’s not dead?”

I turned to the man, surprised at what he had said.
“What did you just say?”
The woman turned with a smile on her face,
” My husband wasn’t talking to you. He was just asking me about my father. He was attacked earlier today, it’s a miracle he survived,” she explained.
I nodded absent mindedly, glad that the man wasn’t an accomplise of Emeka like I had feared.
The long run from Papa Ugo, and the sudden action against Emeka had gotten me tired, and before I knew it I felt myself nodding off to sleep. My dreams were filled with images of Nne’s dead body, and her voice. Emeka’s face suddenly popped up, with bloody hands, and his chest open from a gunshot.
He ran towards me s¢ræming angrily. The terrifying sight jolted me awake.
It was morning, and we had arrived the townsh¡p. The man and woman that had picked me up were chatting happily.
“Hey, you’re awake,” the woman said cheerfully.
The man turned in his seat, smiling at me.
“We’re taking you to police station to make a statement. Maybe you’re belongings could still be found and recovered.”
The mention of Police station sent my hear…

“The Police station?”
“Yes, the police station. I mean those people that robbed you could still be caught. You need help getting your belongings back anyways,” the man said sympathetically.
The man was obviously trying to help, but knowing that I hadn’t been robbed, but had rather shot two young men and left them in the pool of their own blood, I couldn’t help but feel the urge to jump out of the vehicle.
“But honey, you know how stressful it is to deal with the police. With all she has gone through, wouldn’t it be best if she could get some rest first before having to write all those statements they’ll make her to write? Don’t forget that those corrupt bunch will still be expecting money from her. Money that she doesn’t have oh…”

I nodded happily, glad that the woman had saved me from the difficult situation I had gotten myself into.
“Where are you going to though?,” the man asked.
“I…I um…I’m going to the park. You can drop me at the motor park,” I ventured.
“What are you going to do there? You don’t have any money,” the man countered immediately.
The woman turned in her seat, and staring me straight in the eye she whispered,
“We’re not stupid darling. A teenage girl on a lonely road, dirty clothes with blood stains, with no money, and no destination in mind. You’re running from something, tell us the truth we won’t hurt you.”
The woman’s voice was both sympathetic and motherly, and before I knew it I had burst into tears. The man pulled over, and turned in his seat, the woman too was patting my back as I bent and cried. I was sure these were people I could trust.
“They want to kill me. Some people are after my life…”
“Who? Who wants to kill you?”
Staring them both in the eye, I whispered,
“Everybody…”

EP 17 🌿

There was complete silence in the car for a moment. None of us spoke, it was only the sound of my sobbing that filled the car. After a while, the man started the car again and began driving.
“Where are you taking me to?,” I asked, now scared about how they had said nothing about what I had told them.
” What do you mean by Everybody wants to kill you? Don’t you have a family?”
I shook my head in the negative, and began to tell them the story of what I had been through. As I explained to them, I noticed that the woman had started crying. Her sob grew louder when I talked about how Papa Ugo had kidnapped me, and had confessed to killing my father.
“You’re the cursed girl from 18 years ago?,” the woman said in between tears.
I stared at her, surprised that she knew me.
“Where do you know me from?”
She took a handkerchief out, and blew her nose into it.
“I was a little girl when you were born. I think I was around twelve years old. I was easing myself in a bush close to the farm where your father used to tap his palm wine, when I heard the sound of your father whistling and tapping his palm wine. I was almost done and about to leave, when I saw My father crawling towards the tree where your father was tapping his palm wine. My childish thoughts told me that my father probably wanted to ease himself but when I observed how strangely Papa was acting, I realized something was off. To cut the story short, my father shot your father with a sleeping dart, leading to him falling from the palm tree to his death,” she explained.
“You…You’re Papa Ugo’s daughter?” I asked, astonished at what I had been told.
“Yes, that’s right. I hated him ever since, as I realized that my father and everything about him was monstrous. When I moved to the city, I met my husband here who showed me to a good friend of his. A man that taught me to disassociate myself from my father. He showed me that man. He showed me Jesus…”
