Poisoned love

(The Break-up)

Episode 3

Writer: Faith Lucky

For a moment, Sophia’s heart blossomed. But,

the next moment, she recalled the words of

Treasure and she suddenly became bittered.

“hello, miss,” he said, his blue like eyes starring

into her bulgy eyes. “care for a ride?”

Sophia starred at him. Who would say no to

someone like that? Who wouldn’t want to spend

as little as a minute beside someone as cute as

that?

“are you okay?” he asked again, noticing the

depression on her face.

“thanks, but I… I don’t need a ride” Sophia

replied, starring below.

“and why wouldn’t you?” Steven asked as he

stepped down from his car and tried approaching

her.

“stay away from me” Sophia said and stopped

him before he got to where she was.

She walked some steps away from him and

shortly, a cab came along and she boarded it

without turning back to look at Steven who was

out of words.

*

Steven sat on his bed in his bedroom, his back

relaxed against the wall, while Michelle sat

beside him.

They were both watching a movie but his

attention was definitely not in it.

He kept thinking of the strange lady he had met

earlier. The strange lady that had ignored him

strangely.

That was the first time a lady had ever said ‘no’

to him. That was the first time a lady had

ignored him.

Who was she? And why was she acting strange?

No matter how hærd he tried, he couldn’t get it

off his mind. All he could think about was the

strange lady.

Every lady craved to be with him. But she? She

had ignored him like an invisible trash.

That felt like a slap to his face.

“Steven?” Michelle called as she touched his

face with her palm. She noticed he was absent

minded.

“are you alright? You look troubled”

Steve took her palms from his face and held

them softly.

“I’m fine”, he replied with a perfunctory smile.

They both remained silent for a while as kept

starring at him.

“Steven?” she called again, softly. “do you love

me?”

Steven looked at her and scoffed.

“and why the sudden question?” he asked,

perturbed.
“come on, Steven. Just give me a reply. I want

to know”.

“Michelle, you’re my girlfriend, right? Isn’t that

enough for you? Of course, I love you”

Michelle smiled and placed her hand on his

thighs.

“I love you very much, Steven. And I wouldn’t

want to share you with anyone else. Besides, I

can give you whatever you need” she said

ardently and started k-ssing him and after that,

they fell on the bed.

*

Sophia couldn’t fall asleep as she kept thinking

about Steven and what she did to him earlier.

She felt it wasn’t right.

She recalled the look on his face when she had

told him to stay away from her. She knew she

had really surprised him.

She felt bad for doing what she did. She felt bad

that she had ignored her crush, but there was

nothing she could do.

Treasury said he was a womanizer and enjoyed

playing on girls and perhaps, he was also trying

to play on her.

She decided to forget about him as she forced

herself to bed.

*

*

Steven parked his car in front of the school

garage as usual and was about heading to the

library when he sighted her – the strange lady.

Their eyes had ran into each other’s as they

both stood still, starring at themselves.

Steven’s thoughts seemed to be muted as he

couldn’t think of what next to do.

She starred at him for a while and finally walked

away.

Steven felt odd. He felt strange. A twinge of

disappointment ran into his veins.

“hey, dude. What’s up?” he heard a voice behind

him and discovered it was his friend – his best

friend – Oliver.

Steven brightened his face with a smile.

“I’m fine” he replied as they exchanged a nigger

handshake.

They walked into the school building and found a

place to sit.

“So, tell me, how’s the lacrosse team going?”

Oliver asked, beginning to notice an uncanny

attitude with his friend.

Steven brought out a drink from his bag, opened

it and sipped from it before giving a reply.

“it’s going fine”, he replied.

“hey, man. What’s the problem?”

“nothing. I’m fine”.

“are you sure? You don’t look fine to me”.

Steven left his seat and walked some steps

away, starring into space.

“yearsterday,” he started. “I ran into a lady and

offered her a ride home”, he paused and looked

at Oliver.

“but, she snubbed me!”

Oliver starred for a second and finally laughed.

“seriously?” he asked. “wow! Finally, my ever –

loving friend has found a lady that doesn’t think

he’s so charming”.

He laughed again.

“come on, dude. This isn’t funny. This is the first

time a lady has ever said no to me. This isn’t

right. I feel humiliated”.

He sipped from his drink and sighed.

“this isn’t right”, he bemo-ned. “nobody says no

to me. Nobody’s above my grasp. And that’s

exactly what I’m going to prove to her”.

Michelle got into the school building and met

Patricia.

They exchanged warm hugs and greetings and

continued walking together.

Patricia then noticed Michelle was putting on a

new necklace and she seemed very excited.

“Michelle,” she called. “your necklace is pretty. It

seems it’s new?”

“oh, this?” Michelle asked as she placed her

hand on the necklace. “it was given to me by

Steven yearsterday.”

“wow. That’s good to hear”.

They finally got to a hall and settled on a seat.

They brought out some snacks from their bags

and started nibbling at it.

“Michelle,” Patricia called softly. “I’m so glad you

and Steven has finally become intimate. But, you

know, I’m also scared for you. Sometimes, I fear

Steven might betray you”

Michelle chuckled.

“are you trying to say Steven might break my

heart?” she asked.

“yes. You know, that’s the kind of person he’s

been. He’s been fund of using and dumping

ladies. I wouldn’t want that to happen to you as

well”.

“you don’t have to worry about me, Patricia.

Steven’s never going to betray me”.

“but, two days back, I saw him talking to a lady

here in school and they seemed very happy

together.”

Michelle stood up from her seat and lurched

around.

“maybe they were just having a normal

conversation. Listen, Patricia, Steven loves me

and there’s no way he’s ever going to dump me.

That’s never going to happen” Michelle

concluded with a fatuous smile.

*

Sophia was walking out of the school library

when she ran into Steven again. They just

bumped into each other and were standing

closely together.

Steven had a football in his hand while Sophia

held some few textbooks to her chest.

They stood still, starring at each other for a

while and when Sophia attempted walking away,

that was when Steven spoke up.

“hi. Excuse me” he said as he adjusted to stand

properly in front of her.

“I’m Steven and I was the guy who offered you a

ride yearsterday.”

“I know whom you are. And I’m Sophia”, Sophia

replied indignant.

Steven was a bit surprised. So, she even knows

him? And yet, she was acting so strangely as if

she had no idea he was the King of hearts.

“uhm, Sophia, it’s really nice meeting you. But,

you know, is there any reason regarding why you

rejected my offer yearsterday?” he asked.

“no. I just didn’t feel like taking the ride”.

Steven was again, puzzled.

“uhm, okay. Well, I would really want us to be

friends. So, could I have your contact?”

That question was tempting for Sophia, but she

had to disagree.

“sorry, I can’t”.

“but…”

“please, I need to go” she interrupted and walked

away.

Steven was again, bemused as he watched her

walking away.

Why was she acting that way?

Immediately, Michelle walked up to him, looking

surprised.

“Steven,” she called. “who’s she?”

“who?” Steven asked, still having some mixed

thoughts in his head.

The lady I just saw you with “.

Steven hesitated for a while, still starring at the

direction Sophia had taken.

“she’s no one”, he replied adamantly and walked

away.

*

*

Sophia stood in front of the school, waiting for

her mom to arrive.

She was feeling very tired and needed to have

some rest.

The sun was searing and she really didn’t want

to stand there for long.

She took her eyes around and sighted him –

Steven.

But he wasn’t alone. He was walking with a lady,

a beautiful lady. And his hands were wrapped

around her wa-ist.

Sophia starred at them with bileful eyes and

finally threw her face away.

Treasure was right all along. He was nothing but

a cheat; a womanizer.

She had committed a grave mistake in falling for

him.

Shortly, Oliver walked up to her, looking breezy.

“hi, Sophia” he greeted cheerfully. “how’re you

today?”

“I’m fine”, Sophia replied, not feeling at ease

around him.

Treasure had told her Steven’s friends were just

like him and they all had to be avoided.

“uhm, are you waiting for someone?” he asked,

itching the back of his head.

“yes, my mom”.

“okay. Uhm… Sophia, I was thinking we could

maybe have lunch tomorrow. What do you think?”

“sorry, but I’ll be busy. Maybe next time”.

Immediately, her mom’s car arrived and Sophia

felt relieved as she bid Oliver goodbye and

hurried into the car.

*

Sophia was preparing to go to school for her

morning lectures.

Her mother was still getting dressed up and she

felt she might end up going late to school.

She decided to wait for her mother outside the

gate and to her surprise, when she got outside,

she saw an SUV jeep parked in front of her

house.

Definitely, the Jeep looked familiar and so did

the driver who was now coming out of the Jeep.

It was Steven.

Sophia flinched as she moved forward to meet

him.

“Steven?” she called, sounding surprised. “what

the hell are you doing here?”

Steven removed the specs from his eyes before

speaking up.

“I… Uhm,, came to drive you to school” he

replied.

“me? But why? My mom takes me to school”.

Steven paused and scoffed.

“Sophia, why’re you always avoiding me? Did I do

something wrong?”

Sophia starred at him with a bitter and at the

same time, sad feeling.

He was showing so much care, but he was no

different from a cheat.

“I… I told you. I don’t need any friends. What do

I have to do to make it clear to you?”

“seriously?” Steven asked and laughed. “you

don’t need any friends? Are you kidding me?”

Sophia maintained a straight face and Steven

figured she was damn serious.

“okay, fine. Hear me out. Go out on a date with

me and if you still don’t find me desirable as a

friend, I’ll stay away from you” Steven said and

wandered why Sophia laughed.

“are you kidding me, Steven? You want me to go

out on a date with you?” she asked.

“yes. Try me. All I’m asking is just one date. And

if you still want me to stay away from you, I

promise I’ll never bother you again”.

Sophia got into a ruminative mood.

Steven was becoming persistent and she felt she

had to do something serious about it.

Maybe, accepting his idea was the best thing to

do at the moment.

Yes, she had to get rid of him once and for all.

“fine. Today, by 4 p.m. Deal?” she asked.

Steven gave a beatific smile as he replied:

“deal”.
