EPISODE 4
The arrival of Sonia gladdened Angela heart. She was delighted. Sonia on her own part played not only the role of a maid. She felt much comfortable around her madam; she just took Angela as her elder sister. Sonia took charge of the household chores. She took charge of preparing the meals. She even offered to wash the clothes instead of taking them to the dry cleaner. She was in desperate need for money to support her mother’s failing health. She was able to finish her secondary school but couldn’t go further to higher institutions because of lack of finance. So, since then, she has been looking for money through any possible means inorder to keep living and support her mother who was always sick. :::::..****.:::: David bumped into Sonia as he hurried out of his room with his briefcase. He was getting late for work.She fell down as his body brushed her. “Oh.i am sorry. get up, give me your hand” David reached for her hand to help get her up from the ground. “Good morning sir.I was actually coming to tell you that your breakfast is ready” She announced as she got up from the ground. “I don’t think i can still have breakfast. I have to attend an important meeting this morning and i am running out of time. Where is your madam?” David was in a hurry. “She is still sleeping” Sonia replied. She had a way of talking that made her outstanding. Talking slowly and pronouncing every word to the end. David made to Angela’s room to notice her of his early leaving because of an important meeting. As David drove,he thought within himself how Sonia handles the house duties as if she was actually a member of the family. She was in good terms with both husband and wife. Angela had been right about bringing her in,he thought.
1pm The door bell rang.Sonia was the only one at home. Angela has gone to her shop. David was away in his office. She wondered who might be at the door. “Who is there?”she asked standing close to the door. “It’s me o”A voice said from outside. “who?”Sonia asked again. “Soni you can’t recognise my voice ni? Sonia smiled and opened the door.She knew it was Bisi, due to the way she asked her the last question. She had told Bisi where she now lives. Bisi her dear friend had no choice than to come and visit her there since she knew Sonia was always home alone when her employers leave for work. “Soni you are enjoying here o. you are really enjoying here” Bisi said. “That’s what you think. but you are wrong my dear”Sonia defended herself. “hmmmm,soni,if i were in your shoes,i would be very very happy o”Bisi said as she glanced around the compound. “Why do you say so?”Sonia asked. Bisi smile and held her friend. “You are my friend and i won’t hide anything from you. If i were you, i would get close to your madam’s husband. you know what i mean” Bisi rolled her eyeballs. “Do you know what you are saying?”Sonia was calm though. “You are very pretty my dear,and that is a great asset.your mother needs money for her drugs and we know too well that you are a young woman who wishes to make money like others. this is your chance”Bisi said as if she knew exactly what she was saying. Sonia was quiet. she was actually thinking about it. “But be careful to avoid your madam’s suspicions. She is a woman and will understand every step you take. I have to go before they meet me here”Bisi said and left. Sonia pondered this in her heart.Bisi has been a friend for long.They had suffered together and so share so many things in common,despite the fact that they both hailed from different places. She remembered Ebere who had called her up to take the job as a maid.Ebere had told her that she will have a discussion with her in four days time and nobody should know about it.She wondered what the kind lady might have for her. “Bisi my dear friend.you may be right but i haven’t got that kind of heart”she soliloquied as she watched Bisi walk lazily out of the compound
Life had not been fair to Sonia.All her life,she had toiled and worked to raise money.Since she finished secondary school;fees of which she saw to,she worked ardously like a man to support her mom,who had a failing health. Her mother,instead of appreciating the poor girl’s efforts,made matters worst by always telling her she’s a weakling.Sonia just couldn’t figure out why her mother of all people should call her a weakling inasmuch as she involves herself in different types of menial jobs inorder to make both ends meets. It actually happened that she got home one day with bruises all over her body as a result of the countless number of times she fell down,climbing a ladder,carrying a headpan filled with mixed sand,concrete,cement and water. The contractors at first refused allowing her to work due to the fact that she’s a women.Women were not allowed to do such work but she begged and pleadd with them to give her a chance;to test her and see how strong she was. After carrying four headpans of the heavy mixture to the second decking through a ladder slanting against a the rough wall,she felt weak,missed a step and fell from the ladder,while the headpan and its contents fell on her. It was then she confirmed that”not everything a man can do that a woman can do better” The contractor had compassion on her and paid her some money so she can go home and buy some drugs. She expected her mother to feel sorry for her,seeing those bruises on her body but instead,the provoking old woman added salt to her injuries by telling her she was too lazy. “mom,please,stop telling me that.it’s breaking my heart.its killing my spirit.you know too well that i am trying my best”She sniffed,knowing she was just a step away from crying.She fought the tears that threatened and blinked them back.She was tired of shedding endless tears from the hurting words from her mother. “how many people got bruises on their body there?”the bitter woman asked. Sonia just stared at her without a word.Right from the day she started imagining and thinking with her brain,her mothers attitude towards her had always made her wonder if she was actually her biological mother.
“How many people fell from the building?”Her mother asked again Sonia was not surprised at her mother.It was no new kind of question to her.Her mother had always remained a mystery to her. “mum,i was the only woman there.You know its not for women but i had to do it.I had to do it mum;to raise some money inorder to get you more drugs.i just dont know why you are always hostile to me mom”There were tears in her voice this time as she went for a seat,holding her aching leg,sobbing and mo-ning in pain. “you are too lazy” That was all she heard the woman she called her mother say;with a disdainful hiss. “mom, you know what? Overtime i have always wondered if i actually came out from your womb”Sonia said and stormed out of the house with the pains she felt all over her body,to get some pain killers. __Being a pretty young girl,she was so much admired by young men and even the married ones alike but she never paid them any attention.Paul,one of the young men in her neighbourhood vowed to have his way with her by all means.He had tried everything under his power to earn her friendsh¡p but she abruptly turned him down. “baby i don’t mean any harm.i just want to be a friend.i wish you can just come over to my house one of these days to see where i live”Paul had one day told her. When Sonia finally visited him,after agreeing to be just a friend,Paul offered her a drink and she took it. The next thing she discovered was that she opened her eyes and found herself on the bed,stack unclad.Not even a b-ra was on her.Blood was all over the bedspread. “noooo.Jesus nooo”she covered her face with her palms and cried out in pains. She opened her eyes again and found Paul at one corner of the room,staring at her.She quickly grabbed the bed spread and covered her uncladness. With eyes full of tears she focused her gaze on him “Paul.paul why.whyyy paul.You betrayed my trust paul.I told you i am a V-rgin.Do you have to do this?”She couldn’t control the tears anymore as they flowed freely from her eyes.
