✍️CHAPTER TITLE✍️: EXPOSING VERA___ Part 1

When her dim eyes opened slowly towards the direction from where the brightness, that was affecting her sleepy eyes came, it closed back immediately.

Opening it little by little until it fully opened minutes after. She scanned the room before her eyes fell on Damien, who had slept off in a sitting position beside her, on the bed.

Looking at his sleeping face, before she threw her eyes away from him. The last thing she remembered was him accompanying her here after dinner, last night.

Annabel was looking out for Vera’s presence, and when her eyes became weak, with the soothing pampering that came from Damien’s palm on her hair, Annabel had to close her eyes eventually, and then she slept off.

If Damien is presently sleeping beside her now, that means he passed his night here. And yesterday, did Damien think about what she had told him?

Was Damien thinking about how to stop Vera from leaving? Annabel didn’t plan to put Vera in trouble. If she had the choice, she would never let Vera feel sober over anything.

Annabel didn’t grow up with an elder sister. It was only Damien and Caleb who had always shown her affection most times, after her parent’s death.

For five good years, she didn’t get to experience love from anyone because she was stranded between life and death.

In the begining, she started liking the butler because she thought that Disguise was a man. Later on, she realized that his love was just like a brotherly love.

Enjoying his presence in her life, when she found a soothing place around her. Her love for him when she found out about her identity, made her really glad to have found an elder sister for herself.

Vera is a nice person and takes her time to please and ensure others safety. She even came here for her brother, and even without having what brought her here, she has helped Damien to mend his ways.

Yes, Annabel knew about Vera and Damien’s discussion because she questioned Damien on the reason why he later came for the meeting, and he told her he changed his mind after listening to the butler.

Vera might never had the mind to reveal the truth. Annabel doesn’t know how to go about it either, but what she’s going to ensure is making the princess dream of being with Damien come through.

Annabel isn’t selfish, but she wants Vera to be with them till forever, as she knows that the princess would have a good influence on Damien’s character.

Qently taking Damien’s palm off her hair, she pushed her body off the bed. With her drowsy eyes, she scanned Damien’s body and truthfully wanted to help him sleep properly, but she couldn’t.

If her hand stresses him a little, Damien would wake up and try putting her to sleep again, since it isn’t dawn yet. Seeing Damien in his resting state could intimidate someone to believe that he’s never a cold person.

His smooth cute face, his plumpy lips, and the strands of hair that fell on his face made him very handsome. Damien is charming and he makes charms to obey his rules. Her brother is a prince charming.

A last stare at him, Annabel walked towards the door and quickly opened it, and to her, she didn’t make a noise. One of her legs was out of the room, as she wanted to match out completely, Damien’s heavy voice came right behind her, “Where are you going to?” His voice was huskier than it would be when he was awake.

Annabel froze on her step, turning her body around to face him, while wondering about how he managed to wake up. She had done everything quietly, so how did Damien wake up now?

With her eyes set on his face. Damien didn’t look like he was awake. His eyes were firmly closed, and this made her wonder if maybe her hearing Damien speak was from her mind.

“Damien?” She called, to confirm that he was awake and indeed spoke to her earlier.

“I asked you where you were going to. It’s not morning yet,” Damien fluttered his weak eyes open to meet hers.

His eyes took in her anxious expression. Where is she going to? ‘Is she hungry?’ Damien thought of.

Annabel strolled towards the bed, standing a few steps away from the bed stand, she bit her lips nervousness before saying, “I’m going to speak with Disguise,”

Damien shook his head, then he thought about what sort of closeness Annabel did share with the butler that even in the middle of the night, she still wanted to see him.

“He came last night to see you but you were already sleeping. I told him to leave later,” Damien made mention of like she asked him about it. Why was he telling her this? She didn’t ask him or say anything concerning it.

Just as if Damien was reading her thoughts, he said, “I’m telling you this incase you thought he did not come to see you last night,”

Annabel sighed after hearing. How could she tell him that she isn’t going to chit-chat with the butler, but she needs to speak with her urgently?

“Okay.” Annabel simply said, but she didn’t move an inch away from where she was standing.

With the way Damien was closing and opening his eyes whenever he wanted to speak, one would know that he was battling with sleep.

“Come back to bed. You both will see when it’s morning,” Damien adjourned. Raising one of his hands, while invited her back to bed.

Instead of heeding to Damien’s gesture, Annabel protested, “I’m not feeling sleepy. I want to speak with Disguise,”

Damien wiped his eyes harshly, hoping to keep himself away from the sleep that kept on disturbing him, as Damien was tired.

“He’s resting. It’s until tomorrow before he leaves, you both can talk all day before he leaves.” Damien insisted tiredly, because he wanted to reason with Annabel.

Annabel looked at the wall clock to see that it was past four in the morning, meaning that she didn’t have up to twenty-four hours to spend with Vera anymore.

Her heart broke along with the ticking of the clock. Where as, the clock left her where she was staring to continue counting its seconds.

Even the clock isn’t sparing her any second or bothering to wait for her, it keeps on ticking forward and reducing the time she has left to stay around the butler.

“I just want to see him, I’ll be back now, I promise.” Annabel’s voice shook as she told him. The more she remembered that Vera would be leaving tomorrow, the longer she wanted to throw herself into tears.

“I won’t let you meet with him, Annabel. Come over here and sleep then you both will speak tomorrow,” Damien proved stubborn to her again.

“I have something important to tell him,” she reacted. Her eyelid hid the tears that wanted to drop out of her eyes.

Damien thought that she had said that just to leave the room. After confusing himself that Annabel had lied about having something important to tell the butler, he stated, “There’s nothing as important as him getting rest. Don’t test my patience, Annabel,” Damien left a warning after the statement.

“I need to go and meet him,” Annabel yelled. Throwing her head towards the door and hoping that Damien would let her go this time around.

“No way! You’re not going, and stop being stubborn. Don’t forget that he’s a man and you can’t just go to him whenever you want.” Damien started speaking.

“I trust him that he won’t harm you, but that doesn’t mean you should always stress him. Respect his private moment.” Damien stated firmly. His tone was strict and his drowsy eyes already disappeared.

The more Damien tried to stop her, the more Annabel craved to see Vera. She didn’t know why her instinct kept on pushing her to go to Vera, If she dis not meet her, there would not be a good state for her anymore.

Adamantly, she faced Damien and said, “Disguise wouldn’t complain. I’ll see him and come back now,”

“I told you that he’s a man, and you should listen to me whenever I am speaking. He’s not a woman that he would trade his sleep just to speak with you. Annabel there’s a limit to your interaction with him,” Damien tried to be gentle with her.

He knew Annabel must have been bothered about the butler. It’s hurting Annabel that the butler would leave, and even if Damien couldn’t understand the reason why it’s hurting him too, he was trying his best to keep everything at peace.

“There’s no limit when it comes to him. I can speak whenever I want to speak and there wouldn’t be a complaint from him,” Annabel replied stubbornly again.

“There’s a limit. He’s an adult while you’re still very young. He’s a man while you’re a woman. I don’t want you wandering around, and it’s not proper to see him now, Annabel. And you should stop being stubborn, I don’t like it,” Damien scolded. He dragged his legs out of the bed and now he was sitting on it.

Annabel sobbed lightly, tears rushing out of her eyes with sniffs coming from her. She’s broken and devastated right now. Why can’t Damien just understand this and let her go?

“Crying because of what? I told you that you would meet him in the morning. Why should I allow you to meet someone who is a man at midnight? Stay here and he’ll be here to see you in the morning,” Damien cautioned again.

“She isn’t a man. She’s a woman like me and there’s no hour of the day that I can’t speak with her,” Annabel blurted when she couldn’t be considerate anymore.

Damien’s eyes that were set on the ground raised to look at her but not immediately. Maybe his sister has started losing her mind.

“You’re losing your mind, and I don’t want to believe that you’re crying because of him,” Damien muttered tiredly.

Setting his feet on the ground he walked over to where she was standing, “Stop crying and listen to me. You’ll see the man tomorrow before he leaves. I’m still thinking about how to stop him, Don’t ruin my thoughts with this sight of you,” Damien placed his hand on her hair as he spoke.

Annabel raised her eyes to meet his, realizing that being stubborn wouldn’t solve anything but instead, it would ruin it.

“Damien?” She called out to him silently. He could hear her sniffing and as well trying to speak with him.

“Hum?” He hummed as he knew she wanted to say something. His free hand started wiping the tears away from her flawless cheeks.

“I need to tell you something,” Annabel said and saw him nod his head, asking for her to speak.

Annabel paused her lips, wondering for the last time if it was right for her to tell him or not. She doesn’t want to think of herself as a selfish person, but neither does she want everything to end before something is done.

With the way she had observed Vera, it didn’t seem like she would ever open her mouth to tell Damien anything. Nobody knows what Damien’s reaction would be after finding out the truth, and no one could predict how they would live after Vera is gone.

Annabel can’t think about anything else presently than to set things right. If she can’t speak to Vera about this now, she will have to do something before Damien leaves for work in the morning, and that’s telling him the truth about everything.

“I’m listening,” Damien said when she wasn’t saying anything. Grabbing hold of her hand, he walked her to the bed and made her sit on it.

Damien stood in front of her, waiting for her to speak without bothering about sleeping, he was stressed out because of her stubborn act.

“Disguise- Disguise is-” she stuttered when she saw Damien’s eyes still set on her without them moving around.

“I’m hearing you,” Damien assured calmly as he wondered on what she had to tell him.

Annabel gulped nothing than her throat, and continued speaking, “Disguise is not a man, she’s a woman,” she said to see Damien smiling, his hand that was by his side raised to cajole her hair.

“I know what is bothering you. You must be acting this way because you can’t accept the truth tha he’s leaving,” he stated with a smile on his lips.

“I’m not lying Damien, Disguise is not a man,” she insisted. This time around, she didn’t miss the surprise expression on Damien’s face, and the smile which vanished as well.

And just like he was battling with what to think, Damien replied, “The butler couldn’t have been a woman, Annabel. I don’t employ female workers.” He pointed out.

“What made you think that he’s suddenly a woman?” It isn’t that Damien doesn’t want to listen to Annabel’s gibberish talk, but he knows that Scott couldn’t have made the mistake of employing a woman when everyone knows clearly that Damien doesn’t spare them around him.

Annabel gestured her hands, trying to calm herself down, “She’s not a man. She dresses up as a man, just to be close to you,”

Damien’s eyebrows furrowed, and he looked down at his sister as she talked about things that couldn’t have been possible. How could the butler have been a man? He’s a man and Damien believed just that.

Annabel observed Damien losing himself in thought, and just before he could say anything she added, “Her name is Vera, and she’s a princess,”

Damien’s feet moved a step back, before he stood still. His forehead gathering sweat and his eyes which were calm earlier were no longer calm suddenly. What was Annabel telling him?

“I- I know you might be kidding, but Annabel I don’t like jokes like this,” Damien watched Annabel’s expression as he said. His eyes tried to catch the lies in her words but he wondered why a part of him considered what she was telling as the truth.

“I’m not joking. I didn’t tell you earlier because she was scared and so am I, but I can’t keep it anymore, Damien.” Annabel said instantly.

“I found out about it when her sister told her to return home. I urged her to tell you about her love for you and the reason why she’s doing such a thing because of you,” Damien stared confusingly at her.

“She’s just a princess who loves a man that doesn’t tolerate any woman around him. She wanted to be with you, Damien. She wanted to make her dream of loving you come through, and that was why she did everything,” Annabel cried as she explained.

“Make your words make sense,” Damien said firmly. His hands crossed around his broad chest since a part of him started believing Annabel’s words, but there was only a little minute left before he would react.

“Believe me Damien, she didn’t mean a harm. She just wanted to be with you and refused to care about the danger that lies in being close to you, that was why she’s here,” Annabel replied. Hoping that her words would do the right thing in Damien’s thought.

“What princess are you talking about?” Damien asked. His mind wandered around to check if he had noticed anything that differed the butler from a man. Aside from his kind acts which Damien thinks could relate to a woman, what else is different about the butler? None came to his mind.

“The twin sister of Caleb’s girlfriend,” Annabel replied as she stood up from the bed. Going to stand in Damien’s presence, where she had to look up before meeting his eyes, as he was much taller than her.

“Did he- the butler tell you all of these or you see the doubt yourself?” Damien questioned. He doesn’t want to go ahead and create a scene just because Annabel misunderstood something about the butler.

Sincerely, all the stories she was telling seemed strange to him.

“I- I–” Annabel’s voice trailed off as she feared what Damien’s reaction would be. Damien narrowed his eyes at her while impatiently gesturing for her to speak. “I saw her body, and her true identity when she removed her dress,” She blurted in an anxious state.

“What else?” Damien’s eyes never left hers. He was still gawking at her and didn’t miss any reaction from her.

“I believe in her love for you the night she cried just because your emotion was hurting you. She felt helpless and wanted to help you. She has always wanted to speak to you like a lover but she was always scared,” Annabel went back to reciting how true Vera’s love is to Damien.

“I asked her the reason why she left her royal home just to live with a man who could harm her if he found out the truth,” Annabel paused, waiting to see his reaction.

Out of curiosity and heavy mind, Damien asked, “What did he-she say to that?” He asked with a weak tone.

“Vera said that she loves you but can’t come close. First, because you don’t like women, and the first time she wanted to speak with you, you embarrassed her and walked away. She needed to be close to you, and the last option is to disguise as a man.” Annabel truthfully answered.

“Is he aware that you’re telling me all this?” Annabel frowned at Damien’s mistake of referring to Vera as ‘he’ when she just told him that she wasn’t a man.

“She’s not aware. She wanted to leave tomorrow while keeping our memories with her. I begged her to tell you, but fear wouldn’t let her say a word to you. Damien please stop her from leaving,” Annabel breathed heavily after telling. Tears rolling uncontrollably down her face. She did it. She just exposed Vera without her permission.

Damien’s blank expression gave her problems. She couldn’t read what could be going on in his mind, he stood there glaring around.

“Come with me,” Damien told to her when it seemed like the time suddenly stopped working, because he had been mute for mini.

Without another word, he turned around and left the room, with Annabel dragging her feet behind him. No one needs to tell where Damien was heading to, because she already knows.
