A LONG WALK TO NOTHING Episode 21 – 22

“Please doctor how is my mother” it’s coming to midnight, Eddy and Liam are in the doctors office and he just can’t calm down about his mother……after leaving the house and talking to Liam in his car outside their gate, he was so worried about his mother and more worried that she might lose her cool with her husband, after talking to Liam in the car for ~some minutes, he decided to go back in hoping to find the talk over and indeed when he opened the door, the talk was over and Mum crashed down on the h~ ard tile right in front of him, she ran by her side and Donald ran back too

“Mum” he had called

“Alexia” his father called too

“Don’t touch her” he had said under gritted teeth to Donald, he managed to get him out of the house almost getting physical with him….he called Liam who had not driven far from there to inform him and Liam asked him to drive Alexia to the hospital and he with the help of the Askari(watchman) carried his mother to the car and he drove off….now he’s almost loosing his head just thinking about what might happen to her

“Doctor please”

“Please calm down……have a seat please” the doctor tries his best to make Eddy settle down in his panic state

“How is she Doctor Liam takes charge of the questioning now

“She’s not very bad but she isn’t fine either, good enough the fall had no much impact on the head, we managed to run some tests on her and she’s responding greatly to treatment…she’s on drip right now…she just needs to have enough rest that’s all”

“Thank God” Liam says

“Tell me, how has she been lately because she’s not doing fine psychologically…..seems she has a lot on her mind and she’s not even eating well”

“You’re right about that Doctor…. My mother has so many things that just need her and it’s so overwhelming for her but can I just see her now” before the Doctor could answer Liam cuts Eddy short

“I think you should go back home Eddy, your sister is left alone all by herself there”

“But Mum needs me”

“I know but right now it’s best she just gets this rest the Doctor says, you can come back tomorrow and be with her after dropping your sister to school”

“He has a point young man” the Doctor says

“Your mother needs this rest” Eddy nods

“And you boss”

“Yes I’m going home too because my daughter is all by herself in the house but you can go ahead….I’ll go”

“Thank you very muchy boss Liam, I just don’t know what I would have done without you” Liam hugs Eddy

“I know…. It’s OK, get going now it’s already late”

“Sure good night” he says to both Liam and the Doctor before walking out, once he’s out, the Doctor turns to Liam

“Aren’t you going” he asks

“I have to see her first”

“You have five minutes and it starts now”

“Come with me” the Doctor leads him to the private ward

“I’m so proud of you my Darling” Cecilia is m-ssaging Donald’s back as they speak in the middle of this cold night

“You have no idea how Happy I am right now”

“She continues”

“Why” Donald who is not even smiling asks

“I have every reason to, I thought you were never going to do it….and I can’t believe you did it either, I’m so proud of you my Darling, this calls for celebration” she climbs down from the bed and walks out of her room, Donald who has his eyes fixed on the floor doesn’t even look up until when she walks in calling him, she’s carrying two glasses and a bottle of wine…..she’s wearing a strapless sundress like some one at the beech, he had not even noticed it until now

“What’s that you’re wearing” he asks

“Oh! I didn’t tell you but actually we had a photoshoot done for perl media earlier today and guess what, your girl here signed a fifty million deal with them”

“Congratulations”

“Thank you” she hands him the glasses and she pours the wine

“Now we have two main reasons to celebrate tonight” she says seating on his laps and he just smiles

“Cheers……tell me, how did Alexia take the news” she asks him and he puts his glass down

“You see Cessy, I actually want to know something before I tell you all that”

“Hmmmm”

“How did Alexis find out about this wh0le thing, we agreed I would be the one to break the news to her….did you in anyway go behind and betrayed our promise” she suddenly puts the glass on her l-ips and she gulps down the wine in one breath

“No…..I couldn’t do that, why would I because if I wanted to do something like that I would have done long ago…..what happened was that I was in my house when she showed up knocking at my door, I thought it was just my friend coming for a visit but I was wrong, she attacked me with the truth and fought me….I was not prepared”

“I know, I knew this was going to happen but this is too soon”

“Are you regretting it”

“That’s not my point, the point is my son now thinks I’m the bad one, apparently my feelings don’t matter to him, I’m the bad one”

“He will come around, just give him time….but in the mean time what are you going to do”

“I need to find somewhere comfortable to move in as I work a way forward for all of us, with Alexia I’m sure it’s not going to be easy but space is all that I need”

“And now that she’s in the hospital”

“About that, I have to pay her a visit tomorrow… I know my son doesn’t want me there but I will have to just for the sake of the relationsh¡p we still share…..i….”

“Ssssshhhh”she takes the glass from his hands and puts it aside along with hers, climbing on his laps, lifts his chin up a little”

“Why don’t we make the night magical…you know we could do something exciting” he takes charge and holds her chin, brushes his l-ips on hers and k-sses her roughly, she responds wh0leheartedly as their clothes go down

“Please don’t take longer than we agreed, she needs to rest” the Doctor reminds Liam on getting to Alexia’s room

“Don’t worry Doctor I’m not going to” the Doctor leaves closing the door behind leaving Liam and Alexia alone in the room, he walks slowly to her bed and sits

“Ale” he softly calls as he takes her left hand holding it and squeezing it

“You’re a strong woman, a very strong woman every man desires to have, I’m a parent, a single parent for that matter but I’ve terribly failed in my work as far as my daughter is concerned but I never even noticed it until when you challenged me…… The first day I saw you, I thought to myself that your husband was one lucky fella but right now I’m seated here by your side, holding your hand and telling you that he’s a jerk, a fool who doesn’t deserve all your sacrifices……you’re not just my friend but my best friend, I hate to see you cry and hurt that’s why I’m not going to let you go alone in this, I’ll be by your side helping you along with your children who are all victims of your husband’s deceit” he takes her hand and k-sses it lightly

“How does beautiful look like? I don’t understand because to the best of my knowledge, you possess every sense of the word….”

“Your time is up please” the Doctor reminds him standing at the door

“I know Doctor, thank you” he gets up and k-sses her forehead before walking to the Doctor at the door

“Are you sure she’s fine, she should be up by now”

“Her mind has been accommodating so much……she needs this much rest, She’ll be up in a couple of minutes but it would be best she doesn’t have someone who can fill her in on what happened to her”

“It’s just that I’m so worried about her”

“I know but she’s in good hands”

“Thank you Doctor” he shakes hands with the Doctor before finally leaving….. He walks to his car outside and starts his journey back home, somewhere along the way, his phone begins to Ring and he gets it out, it’s Richærd

“Hello Richie”

“Mam tsup, where are you”

“Long story for tomorrow”

“I’m in your house…..”

“What! You didn’t tell me you would pass by”

“Remember you called me earlier today and we couldn’t finish our talk, I wanted to pass by and we talk before proceeding home but when I got here I found the gateman who informed me Glory was the only one at home and the girl had no idea where you ran to and so I had no choice but to stay with her waiting up for you”

“Sorry man…..give me ten minutes”……indeed he gets home in ten minutes time, packing his car in the compound, he comes out of it and the gateman runs to welcome him

” welcome back Sir ”

“Thank you…..is my friend still in”

“Yes sir, his car is still packed there”

“Thank you, it’s late and I don’t think he’s going back this night, just lock up the gate properly and get some rest

” thank you Sir ” he proceeds to the house and opens the door, he finds Richærd watching some late night show with Glory so cuddled and sleeping on his laps

“Finally” Richærd says

“So sorry man! Look at this big girl….couldn’t she just go to her room and sleep”

“She was waiting up for Dad…. Tell me, what and where you’re coming from has everything to do with what we talked about right?” Richærd asks

“Let me take and put her to bed, it’s kind of cold out there, I wouldn’t mind a cup of coffee”

“Are you in anyway asking me to fix that up for you man”

“Help a brother”

“Only because I need a cup too” Liam doesn’t waste time, he collects his big girl and heads out to her bedroom with her in his arms, he returns shortly and joins Richærd in the kitchen

“Did you call Linda to tell her you’re spending the night?” He asks

“And who says I’m spending the night”

“You know how protective I can get when it comes to the safety of the people I care about so just to be on the same page, I’m telling you now you’re staying for the night”

“Till when you convince Linda”

“Why wouldn’t I…. Pass me your phone”

“Silly you, I already called her…..” They laugh as Richærd now pours the tea in their cups and Liam collects the sugar bawl and follows behind

“I came in here and found Glow warming her food and she had no idea where her father had gone to”

“I never thought I would stay out late but something happened”

“You went to see Alexia”

“I was worried about her man, after our call you gave me more reasons to feel guilty about what happened earlier today, I tried calling her up to find out how she was doing but her phone was switched off the entire day, I drove up to her gate and called her son who assured me she was fine”

“I’m Glad she is but her husband is just something else, after talking to you on phone, I was keenly observing his behavior and attitude but nothing seemed unusual, he was all relaxed”

“That jerk, I can’t expect anything from him, as I was telling you, I talked to Edmond and we said our goodbyes and goodnight, I drove just a short distance from her home when Eddy’s call came in telling me his mother had fainted”

“Jeez”

“Yeah I had to go back and we took her to the hospital”

“How is she now”

“She had not woken up when I left but she’s out of danger”

“And Donald, what happened to him”

“I don’t know, but he didn’t come with his son to the hospital”

“Poor thing! What hurts me the most Liam is the fact that Donald is my friend and he keeps making these mistakes even with my warning and I just helplessly watch him destroy his home all because of that ski-ny bitch”

“And to think that some men out there would give everything just to have a woman like Alexia……he will regret it

“Alexia lies on her sick bed looking up facing the roof, with no tears in her eyes but there are tresses of plenty on her dry face, just one look at her reflects how much she’s going through externally…….

” Mum” Eddy calls softly as he opens her door and she shifts her gaze fixing her eyes on him

“My son” she calls and Eddy moves to her side with a food container containing breakfast in it

“How is my daughter”

“Celine is fine…..I’m from dropping her off to school”

“Thank you son” she forces a smile on her l-ips

“Has your Father come….did he drive me to over here?” Alexia asks hopefully but Eddy just shakes his head just in a way to ask her to calm down…before he could even say something, Liam opens the door with some drinks in hand

“Good morning” he greets them

“Boss Liam”

“Eddy, you’re already here”

“Yes….but I have lectures in a couple of minutes time”

“What then are you still doing here”

“I can’t leave mum alone”

“Well I’m here now….. I don’t have anything to do for the next three hours starting now” Eddy is relieved

“Thank you so much”

“Don’t worry, you can go and attend your lectures” Eddy gets up and thanks Liam, k-sses his Mum and walks out…Liam approaches Alexia and sits down, he smiles and she returns the smile

“How are you” he asks

“I don’t want to lie to you,so it’s best I really don’t answer that” she tries to sit up and he helps her

“Easy…..”

“I’m so sorry for putting you into all this trouble with my problems”

“Don’t say that, I told you what friends are for, you can count on me whenever you need my help and I count on you too when I need a friend to lean on” she nods

“It’s finally over Liam… Donald told me the twenty years have been but a long walk to nothing” it’s as if her tears have just been waiting for this moment…..

“He told me everything was just a dream, just one look from him and he sent me to hell….I’m in so much pain, through out last night, I didn’t understand what was happening to me and this morning I’ve just been wondering what will become of me, Donald is my life my everything, I wonder who will open the door from today to watch the sun leave without lessening the pain that remains in my broken once obsessed heart, the pain of my trembling hands scrapping together a feeling of safety…”

“Sssshhhh look at me” Liam holds her hands trying to calm her down and she’s not even listening

“Who will want to support me and understand the bad within my personality because nothing good comes from me”

“If you would let’s just talk” he says softly touching her cheek and she settles a bit

“Ale, everything happens for a reason but you trying to blame yourself for your husband’s choice is totally unacceptable, he’s responsible for his choices not you, but you talking like your living totally depends on that man is something I will not sit here and listen to, why don’t you try and collect your pieces together and walk with your head held high, at least make an effort so people like us who care about you can know they are doing their best”

“It’s not like I don’t understand what’s happening Liam but it’s just that if I tell you the truth, I don’t want to see myself alone”

“I get your point but Donald already made his choice…..think, use your brain because I can already picture all the good things lined up for you on the way just hold on a little longer, hang in there because soonner than later, Donald is gonna see who that conniving witch really is”

“You know what’s funny, Donald told me last night that he had no dream or whatsoever with me but when I met Donald, he told me he needed to fix his messy life and needed me to help him, foolishly I believed him but look at me now, there is no we now there is just me and there is him..silly me!”

“You’re not silly…you’re just a marvelously beautiful woman with a big heart”

“Do you mean that” she asks

“I’ve never been so sincere in my life” he nods as he stresses this

“Can I get a hug” he leans in and hugs her as he rubs her back
