A LONG WALK TO NOTHING Episode 23

Eddy is in his hostel packing a few things for his trip home, he never attended lectures after his talk with his father, he went back to the hospital and found out his mother had been released to go home, he drove her home and picked his sister from school and now packing up, he is going to stay with her for a few days till when she gets better…….someone knocks at his door and he poses to listen, the person knocks again and he walks to the door without saying anything, he opens

“You” he wants to close the door in Isabel’s face but she is fast, she holds to it tightly

“Eddy wait”

“What do you want huh! Have you come to mock me or what, because that could be the only thing that makes you happy”

“Would you at least let me in, I just want us to talk” she’s claimed and looks serious

“About what? Wait your aunty already informed you that her own part of the deal worked out so well and now it’s your turn well tell her you found my door locked”

“Edmond please, you’re condemning me for a crime I know nothing about….would you just let me explain”

“You expect me to buy that line?….after everything”

“No, I don’t expect that from you…that’s why I chose coming here over sending you an SMS even when I knew you’d throw me out…..” he keeps quiet but steps aside for her to enter

“Thank you”

“I don’t expect you to last for more than five minutes because thanks to you and your ski-ny aunty my Mum needs me by her side”

“I’m so sorry….believe me I am”

“Get straight to the point why you’re here” Isabel takes a deep breath before holding Eddy’s hands but he doesn’t let her, nevertheless she continues

“I know my family is the last people you wish to hear from or even see but you allowing me in here to talk to you speaks volumes, it shows how a good person you’re….. I’m here to tell you about my aunty”

“Or better yet, her involvement with my father…put it that way”

“I have always known she and your Papa had more than what they let out, not because she told me but because she has always been uncomfortable with my relationsh¡p with you, my aunty was living abroad before five years ago, when she came back my Mum asked me to move in with her here in the city because I was enrolled in a good university…… Before her return to the country, I had been staying in the hostel and going home during school breaks, but when she arrived there was now no need to…..I started living with her, she was so free and open with me and let me use her phone to watch videos and take good pics, then I noticed she had searched your mother countless times and in the notepad in her phone, she would mark the date, day and the time she either saw her or something like that, she had several of Alexia’s photos in her gallery……I got curious and then asked her one day, she didn’t give me a satisfying answer but rather that she was looking for a long lost friend, that was when I told her I was friends with Alexia’s son, I have never seen a brightness in her eyes like that moment, it seemed like the best news she’d heard in her entire life…..”

“Then you invited me over to her House”

“Yes because she wanted it so badly and would remind me everyday until I had to, I had no choice…..you accepted to come home and you did, both of you cliqued so well, soon she found her way to your Mum through you and it was so easy, I started suspecting something but I said nothing about it, she then asked if you and I had something going on, I told her the truth that there was nothing and she was happy asking me to keep it at that….. Then your Mum invited us home, she prepared a lot of food, aunt Cecilia wore a long blue evening gown….I knew she was dressing to impress someone but definitely not your Mum, before that night I had a rather conflicting thought that maybe my aunt was homos€×ual and she was into your Mum but that night all my curiosity was set to rest the moment your father and my aunt locked eyes when we walked into your house, the sly smile she had on her l-ips and your Father’s priceless expression , they kept on stealing glances at each other throughout the dinner but no one noticed.”

“Then why did you keep quiet and refuse to tell me…”

“Because I had conflict of interest, she was my aunt”

“And I was your Friend”

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry I didn’t tell you, but I had only one thing in my mind that time, only if you’d made a move with me, maybe she would have retreated, but then you couldn’t, she started reminding me I’m not supposed to have anything with you” Eddy looks at Isabel and shakes his head

“But then you just allowed her to hurt my mother and tear my family to parts when you could have helped”

“What would I have done?”

“If you cared about what we shared even if we were just only but friends, you’d have said something…..”

“I know but I also know she’s going to leave your father”

“Why….how did you know”

“It’s because she now wants someone else….she wants your boss”

“Liam?….. So you’re also into this, looks like the people she’s involved with come through your involvement am I lying”

“Well no….aaah huh!”

“You see, you didn’t do enough practice, you’re just like her so leave now”

“Eddy please”

“OUT!!!!” She gets up

“Hey! It’s OK…..I’ll leave” she grabs her purse and walks out as Eddy kicks the door in frustration cursing the wretched family

“Mum….where is Daddy” Alexia is startled by this question coming from Celine who has just joined her in the living room, she has been seated all by herself processing all that’s going on also wondering what she’s going to tell her daughter about her Father leaving home already without hurting the child in the process but she had thought of nothing yet here the girl just asked her the question, she looks at the young but beautiful girl standing in front of her

“Why are you crying Mum, did Dad shout at you again?” Celine asks

“Celine my child… Come sit on mum’s laps” the girl does

“Should I make you something to eat or you want to tell me about school first” she smiles

“How is school tell Mummy and I’ll make for you some noodles” the girl gets excited

“Yesterday at school aunty Cecilia came to see us” Alexia almost jumps out of her skin on hearing this

“Aunt Cecilia Came to see you?”

“Yes and Glow too”

“What did she tell you”

“She didn’t say anything because Glow’s Dad arrived and shouted at her”

“Shouted?”

“Not like Dad does but he was angry….he told our teacher to not allow her to see us” Alexia now is fuming, she doesn’t understand why Liam of all people would witness something like this and not mention it to her, she’s not going to allow the sneaky bitch near any of her children so she puts her daughter down

“Now listen baby…. Mummy now needs to make a call, just go up to your room and I’ll call you when your noodles is ready”

“Yes Mummy” she runs upstairs and Alexia watches her till when she disappears before she picks her phone and dials the number

“Hmmmmmm!!!!! So nice…. So refreshing, I like that oh yes” Donald speaks with closed eyes as Cecilia m-ssages his shoulder after a long day at work, he just arrived and she is all over him trying to ease the tension that comes with fatigue from work….they have resolved he’s not going to look for a hotel to move in but rather an apartment but in the mean time they are going to squeeze at Cecilia’s

“You like it?” She asks

“I love it, your small and tiny hands doing wonders here”

“I love hearing such compliments coming from my baby” she k-sses his head, his neck and his ear and he mo-ns in pleasure

“You haven’t told me how office was”

“Hectic is an understatement….. But guess what, it looks like I’ve finally lost my best friend”

“Who is your best friend….. I thought I was”

“You’re in a special way my angel but I mean Richærd”

“The white guy?”

“Exactly”

“I know it has everything to do with my Friend” he stops her hands and opens his eyes as he adjusts himself so he can look her in the eyes

“Please, stop referring to her as your friend because…”

“I’m sorry” she cuts him short with a k-ss and he k-sses her back, as the k-ss gets tense, her phone vibrates from under the pillow and it startles her

“Let me see who it is” she says getting the phone from under the pillow, she shows him the screen

“Alexia?” He asks confused

“Shhhh!…. Let me see what the witch has for us” she says before answering the call and putting it on loud

“Hello bestie” she answers like nothing is wrong

“Now you listen you ski-ny poisonous snake, the next time you try getting close to any of my children especially my innocent daughter, you’ll know what I’m made of”

“Where is this one coming from Alexia” she asks acting all innocent

“Take it from me Cecilia, I can be nice, I can be naive but when it comes to my children I’m so capable of anything, I can even kill…..haven’t you done enough harm already, you’ve stollen my husband so what more do you want”

“Point of correction Alexia, I haven’t stollen your husband, he chose to be with me at free will and it’s not also my fault your children see me as their aunty”

“You’re so annoying….you want to win my children with your lies and deceit so they can accept you as their father’s love but guess what, that can only happen over my dead body……and don’t forget that nothing you say here can hurt me more than what you did already”

“I know, you should be nursing your head injury and not add more”

“Stay away from my daughter I’m warning you because I……” The call gets cut, Alexia removes it from her ears and realises she just hanged up, she throws the phone on the couch in frustration…..Cecilia sits down acting all hurt by Alexia’s words because Donald at this time is looking at her in a way she doesn’t understand

“What is it?” She asks

“What was that about”

“Wait! Whose side are you on? Your wife’s or mine?”

“What were you even thinking seeking that girl out, I accepted to be with you leaving their mother but if I choose to let them know about us especially my daughter, it will be my responsibility or the responsibility of their mother to do so” he’s mad and Cecilia stands up

“Wait a minute… Donald, you haven’t even asked if indeed what Alexia is accusing me of is true or not”

“But you didn’t deny it”

“I’m not a goalkeeper who sits home waiting for hand outs from any man Donald, I work my ass for everything I want, I get invitations everywhere and that school is not an exception, so tell me what I am supposed to do when I go to a school where some of the pupils know me and run to me calling me aunty, I should turn my back and reject them? No sir, I didn’t go out there seeking for your daughter but thank you for reminding me of how irrelevant I am to you” she starts to walk out but he holds her hand

“Let me go”

“please I’m sorry” he apologises but she still gets away from him and walks away but stops

“I can only get to have my proper place in your life the day I remain the only woman, but right now I’m just the other woman and in the end, it’s your wife’s words that carry wait” she slams the door in his face and leans on the door from the other side as she smiles in satisfaction, the call couldn’t have come at a better time

Alexia sits down in the living room tapping her feet on the cold tile feeling so angry and something in her is asking her to just pick her car key and drive over to Cecilia’s where they can have a well deserved fight but she’s fighting that urge, now there is a knock at her door and the knock brings her to her senses

“Now who could this be, it can’t be Eddy because he has his keys” she wonders and the knock continues, she gets up and walks to the door, she opens

“Surprise!!!!” Liam and Glow echo, they are carrying food in their hands

“Hey Glory” Alexia forges a smile

“How are you aunt Alexia” she greets

“I’m very fine baby…thanks for asking”

“May we?” Liam asks and Alexia steps aside

“I hope you’re OK with us budging in on you like this but there was no other way….and Askari was very skeptical about letting us in” he still speaks as he and Glow head to the dinning putting the bags with packed food down

“What do you mean there was no other way” Alexia asks following behind them

“Good place you have here…. Beautiful mansion” Liam who knows Alexia is mad at him for something he’s yet to find out, tries to play all cool and nice ignoring her question

“Are you all by yourself” he still asks

“Glow…would you like to go up and see your friend” Alexia asks

“I would love to”

“OK come with me” she leads Glow upstairs and comes back to find Liam seated down now

“I didn’t want to call you, I knew you’d not cook so I brought food cooked by myself, enough for all including Eddy who I know is coming soon but sorry for invading your privacy like that”

“Why didn’t you tell me about Cecilia visiting my daughter in school…were you also part of it”

“I should have figured it out when you opened and I saw your face” Liam tries to act cool

“I was going to tell you but I wanted you to process all that is going on first, you have too many things on your head and telling you that would have provoked you even more….. I care about you Ale….and the last thing I want to do is to hurt you, I’m sorry if you consider my keeping quiet as a betrayal but what I can just tell you is that you shouldn’t worry about Cecilia showing up in that school and trying to poison Celine’s head because I made it clear to her and the Head teacher, it will never happen again” she calms a bit

“Now enough with Cecilia talk, why don’t you go in and call the guys so we can have this food Glow and I prepared, remember she asked me to invite you people for dinner?, well I informed her you had been sick in the hospital and she suggested we cook for you and bring the food over”

“So thoughtful of her”

“On one condition though”

“Which is?”

“Tomorrow it’s your turn and you’ll cook and come over to our House”

“Hmmmm tit for tat huh”

“Exactly ” they laugh and the door opens…. It’s Eddy just at the right time for dinner..
