Amanda’s pov

“my dad is a herbalist ma, I’ll fish out the culprit in a two minutes ”
” in a two minutes!, Ogunmola has spokeneth English!! ”
His classmates said and started laughing
But it doesn’t sound funny
Cold sweat broke out on my forehead
I saw Ogunmola race to the school poultry and returned with a new born chick, he brought out cowrie shells and white chalk from his school bag

” someone should please stop him?, the school is not a shrine!!, such fetish acts are not allowed here!!! ” my dad yelled
But I could tell that Ngozi’s mom was desperate
Mrs Williams also had a formidable expression on her face
” Mr Smith ,since you’re so against this boy, how can I be sure that you’re not the one behind this, you told me to wait and see how free and fair the sports competition is and the freeness and fairness you’re talking about is this?, let the boy do his work or meet me at court?
, the choice is yours to make ”

I watch my dad swallow a lump in his throat

” um it’s not, um you may carry on ”

Oh no! Carry on???

” before I cut the head of this hen, the person behind this should think well and confess or else the person will run mad oh”

That was when I started trembling
That was when I knew that my father’s influence couldn’t save me from this situation
I had no idea that Ngozi had a strong backing!
I had messed with the wrong person at the wrong time!
But the fool that got the poison for me told me that it’ll only slow her down

The boy placed the white cowries methodically around the chicks body and drew a circle with white chalk, he
started chanting some weird incantations
And I feel a chill run down my spine
And he brought down the knife to the chick’s throat

” please it’s me, I’m the one, I’m the one that poisoned her, I infected the drawing pins with them and scattered it on her own side of the field ”

” ahhhhhhh! Amanda!!”

The wh0le school scre-med
My dad had a shocked look on his face
He couldn’t even form a complete sentence

” Jjjj! Jjjja! Jamilah!”

” I’m sorry everyone!”
I say with tears
But no one seems to feel pity for me
Everyone had a murderous gleam in their eyes
Their face portraying their emotions
How can a young girl be so cruel?
I feel two thunderous slaps delivered to my cheeks and I sway dizzily
” how dare you poison my daughter, you and your dad will go to hell today ”
I started scre-ming
No one has ever slapped me like this before

” Mrs Adams, please calm down, physical violence will not solve this issue”

” daddy please help me….. ”
But daddy didn’t even look my way
He just had a dissapointed look on his face

” Mr Smith, this is a case of attempted murder and you know what that means in court, so we’re giving you only two options, expell this demon from the school or watch your school get closed down ”

Dad looked very pensive and sorrowful
He said the words solemnly, expressing how hærd it is to crucify one’s child
” I hereby expell Miss Amanda Smith today on the basis of cruelty, attempting murder on a fellow student ”

Most people whooped with joy
Am I really that bad!

I couldn’t even cry
I feel sorrowful
I don’t believe in karma until now
Just yesterday, I had instigated Tife’s expulsion and I shared the same fate today
A wh0le academic year wasted!

Kate’s pov

” she’s been stabilized ”
I don’t know when I jumped on Jerry and pulled him into a tight hug

” oh my God, Jerry, thanks so much… ”
” um Kate, it’s nothing ”

We went to the sick bay and met a better Ngozi
Although she still looks frail
” Amanda has been expelled, she was the one behind this ”
I say to cheer her up
Her eyes were troubled
” but why did she do that to me, In what way did I offend her ”
” I’m sorry bestie, some people are just plain pure evil ”
“.due to the commotion and pandemonium, the winners of the sports competition hasn’t been released, but it’s going to be released during closing time, I’m so releived that you’re getting better ”
Bukky said

Ngozi’s pov

Everyone was fussing over
My body feels weak
And I throw up every now and then
I breath a sigh of relief that the demon in school have been chased out
But is that totally correct?

I rest my head on Cisco’s lap and he car-ssed my face
And I close my eyes in a silly daydream
His face looks dishevelled
” I was so scared Zee, when I saw you slump, I….I…. I”
” it’s alright Cisco, I’m fine now……”

” I serve a living God, Chineke thank you oh, Hmmm wicked people everywhere ”
My mom shouted disturbing the cozy atmosphere

” mom, please don’t shout, my head is aching badly ”
” I’m sorry Ngo, I just finished speaking to your father, he asked if he should take permission from work and come home ”

Deep down I want my dad to come
But I thought of the expenses that he would make

” no mom, I’ll be fine, I’m already feeling better ”
” okay, I’ll go and speak to the school nurse to ask if I can take you home now, thank you so much Francisco and thank your friends for me ”

” it’s alright ma ”

Mom returned with approval from the nurse and we went home

Amanda’s pov
I was finally experiencing what Tife experienced
But in a worse way
The worst part of it that there was no Tife to take out my anger on
No Tife to pleasure me with her body
And no lunch was being prepared in the kitchen
I smashed the flower vase in anger
I thought it was a joke but I’m starting to get worried
Where is my best friend?
I went to her room and read the note again
” I’m gone Mandy
Not just now
Forever
Cause I’ll be in heaven ”

Oh no! I hope it’s not what I’m thinking
I called her on the phone and it kept saying switched off
Where the hell is Tife?

Ngozi’s pov
I was so happy when Kate told me our name was among the qualifiers

I was really enjoying my celebrity lifestyle
Jerry and Francis came to stay with me
And we were busy solving algebra
Jerry kept explaining different equations
But he kept on laying emphasis on Katie, asking her every now and then if she understands
And my mom was busy cooking different things
What can I even say she’s celebrating
My escape from poison death?
Or my rescue from coma ?

The atmosphere was so lively
What am I even saying sef!
Solving maths? Lively???

I rest my head on Cisco’s shoulders
” Ngozi , get better tomorrow or I’ll piggy back you to school ”
I started laughing as I imagine the scene
I winked at me
” that would be great Cisco, um, did Donald qualify ”

I saw the change in expression on Cisco’s face and I know I have ruined a special moment

” um yeah, he did, fifth runner up ”
” guys. Let’s do a review on product and quotient rule…. ”
Jerry said
But my headaches were getting bad
” I’m going to bed guys, see you tomorrow ”
I head to my room and brought out my phone
I saw lots of voice messages from Donald
I’m not in the mood to read them now
” Ngozi make sure you take medicine before you sleep!!!!! ”
My mom yelled from the parlor

The door flew open and chioma entered with a paracetamol tablet

” sister Ngozi, are you still not taking it?? ”

Amanda’s pov
Every single thing reminds me of her
The sofa, the pillows, the dinner table
I hear a knock on the door and I rush out to open the door with glee
My face turns sour when I realized that it’s only the delivery guy that brought my order
I collect it and went in,side, I peeled open the package and was disgusted by the sight of the pizza , I know I can’t possibly eat it, I wrap it up and place it on the table

That was when I saw Tife, she was wearing her favorite black gown with cashmere wool and silver bag and her face looks somehow strange.
How did she enter the house!
She started walking towards me
I ran to hug her and I realize that it’s just an illusion
I release a scre-m and curl up like a child on the sofa
I trembled in fright
I open my eyes shakily and I realize that the illusion isn’t there anymore
I scamper in fright to my room, my fingers shaking as I try to find the door knob, I packed a few clothes in a frantic rush
As I lock the door of the house, I know I won’t be coming back
Tears blurred my vision
I caused every single thing that’s happening to me
And it’s either my best friend is dead or I’m experiencing a nervous breakdown for the second time in my life.
It’s time to find Tife!
I only hope she’s safe , I’ll have to go to her parents house, they live at shomolu, that’s where we met, but I’m not sure Tife will be there, the last time she went home her mom had been specific that she never returns

Donald’s pov
I woke up with a new energy
An unexplainable feeling, like a spark of electricity
And I know that killing time is near
I went to my inner room and push open the drawer on the last row
I bring out a knife
Not a kitchen knife
But a very lethal instrument of death, it’s weight was perfect in my hands, it’s hilt was inscribed with gold ‘ D. G. S’ Donald Gaddo Stevenson
it’s time to prepare
I imagine different ways that I can kill her
By fire!
Nah! I need something that’s gonna cause a lot of blood
The knife in my hand will do the trick
I pick up a pistol and loaded it
I put it in my back pocket
It’s time to visit a place I haven’t been in a long long time!

Ngozi’s pov

I woke up the next morning feeling better
All the house chores has already been done
Perfect
Today is Mr/mrs algebra competition
I can’t believe that in two days time, everything will be over and the Princeton king and queen will be determined.
I went to bathe and prepare for school
I and Kate and chioma headed to school
Donald was already waiting for me at the school gate
” I was so worried about you dear, how are you feeling, can I see you for a minute before the assembly ”
Kate gave me a coded look
” I’m feeling better, I’m sorry I didn’t reply to your messages, I wasn’t even….. ”
” it’s okay, but why didn’t you wear our vest”
” umm… Cisco also gave me one and I….. ”
An angry look flash across his face
” I’m sorry Donnie…. ”
” don’t you dare call me Donnie!!!!”
He held my wrists so hærd that it started bruising
All my self preservative instincts kicked in
And I began to kick him in the knees
” stay the hell away from my friend, you’re hurting her you monster ”
Kate yelled
He instantly became sober, it was almost like he had no idea of what he just did
” oh no!, I’m so sorry Ngo, please I had no idea I was hurting you I….. ”
I look at his handsome pleading face and something tugged at my heart, but the tingly feeling of the bruise on my left hand brought back the sanity in me

I enter into the school compound with that sad crushed image of him stored up in my memory forever

Kate whispered in my ears
” you’re right, I should have ”

After settling down in class, the ten qualifiers were summoned and I, Kate and Halimah went to join the rest of the group in the grand hall

Our seat number has already been marked, the chairs were arranged in twenty rows and each of us we’re placed in a row, there was no opportunity for giraffing

Then our mathematics teacher, Mr Deji, walking into the hall with his usual whistle

“. You’ve made this far, you conquered debate, culture and sports but at the end of this test it’s ironic that only five of you will be selected, some of you have fallen by the way side for immoral or vile acts, let the reward be your motivation, inspire yourself, push yourself above limits and congratulations in advance because today’s test is a very simple one, you just have to answer a question ”
I smile
One question, thank God oh!
Then he began distributing the question and answer sheets
I open it and the smile evaporated from my face
Warr is did!
This has to be a joke!

Although I’m not that good in maths, at least I still know the formula

So I picked up my pen and began to write

I stretched my neck and saw Jerry’s back view, he was writing nonstop
And I continue writing

Amanda’s pov

I alighted at the bus stop of Tife’s house
I was still wearing my bunny onesie because I couldn’t change my clothes at home
I know my face must look comical
I began walking down the dusty lane, I pray that I can still recognize the house after three years

I got to the sprawling mansion and I could see her house in the opposite direction

But come to think of it

How would I make enquiries about her without arousing suspicions

I saw her again
Tife
She wore a very short strapless black gown and outrageously daring make up
She was walking out of the house, but why did she suddenly become so slim, her skin isn’t even as glowing and radiant as I know
I close my eyes, refusing to believe that I’m now seeing things, refusing to believe that this is another figment of my imagination

” please excuse me, you’re standing in my way ”
I open my eyes immediately
How could I have thought that this is Tife
No this must surely be her sister
” I’m sorry em but I’m looking for your sister, Tife ”

The girl looked up like she was trying to understand what I just said

” Tife? She has been gone for three years now ….
She looked closer into my eyes

” you’re sister Amanda, you’re the one Tife went with ….. Mummy! Mummy!! Mummy!!!! ”

Oh no!

Tife’s mom came outside
” yes! Ayoola, what is it, why haven’t you left ”
” mummy I’m confused, sister Amanda just came here to ask about Tife…..”
” Ehnn! Amanda or what are they calling you, where is my daughter ”

I know it’s only my mouth that can save me in this situation

” good morning ma, the thing is that um my dad sent Tife on an errand to an area that’s not too far from here and she said she’ll stop by so that’s why I came to ask about her….

She looked at me skeptically

” aren’t you guys supposed to be in school ”

I left here feeling depressed

I could solve the difficult maths problem because of Jerry’s help
I submitted mine two minutes before Ngo
I really hope she does well

And as the rest submitted, the scripts were observed by Mr Deji’s scrutinizing hawk eyes

He shook his head in disbelief

” some of you do not even know the formula!!!!
” Miss Ngozi Adams!”
Oh my God!
” yyyess sir ”

” why can’t you use the brackets in your solution in the third page, rubbish ( he shook his head continuously) just plain pure rubbish ”

Ngozi’s pov
Kate and Bukky came to hold my hand
Bukky started trembling
” if he could say this about you Ngo, what about me, I don’t even know the correct formula ”

” once you hear your name just know that you’re selected ”

I went to congratulate Francis, Jerry and Ahmed instead

” before you start congratulating each other, remember that tomorrow is the health competition and it’s a very simple one, you just have to find a way to improve the health aspect in the school, wish you guys Best of luck! ”

Bukky’s pov

I have been disqualified
I remember my promise to mom
I went back to my own class
I was brooding in silence when Tope came to join me
” hi girlfriend ”
” leave me alone joh, I’m a failure sugar, I couldn’t qualify, I didn’t even know the formula ”

He laughed heartily

” seriously Tope! ”
” I didn’t qualify too, I guess we’re just two miserable failures ”

I don’t know when a smile formed in my mouth

Only Tope could make me smile in times like this

Tife’s pov

I crawled out of the uncompleted building I’ve been sleeping in the past few days
I smell filthy and my face looks gross
I acted impulsively without trying to consider the consequences of my actions.

My stomach churned
I have to quickly leave here before anyone sees me
But where do I go from here

I remember the last conversation I had with mom
I begged her with tears

” please mom, I don’t want to go back there, please Amanda is a cruel being, she is not who you think she is, please mom…. ”

” I’m sorry Tife, look at you, look at how your skin is glowing, I already told all the neighbors that youve gone to boarding school and it is that boarding school that is Amanda’s house that you should stay forever, if I see your leg in this house, I will cut it….

I was lost in my reverie as I cross the road
I didn’t see the incoming truck
It moved with great speed that it swept me off the road before I could think
As I lay on the ground, I feel a horrific pain on the left side of my face
