đš EPISODE EIGHT đš
She woke up that morning with the sound of the doorbell.
âShit!â She panicked. She realized that she was unclad and lying in Justinâs arms.
âWho is that?â Justin asked, lazily sitting up from the bed.
âI donât know. It must be Jill or Yuan or both of them.â She said, hurriedly getting her clothes and getting dressed.
âHow will you hide?â She asked.
âWhat if I just donât?â He asked squarely, getting dressed himself.
âJustin⌠this isnât the time okay? I need timing to tell them about us. Iâve kept it too long and they would hate me if they find out I didnât share something this monumental with them.â She explained.
âDo you realize that everyday you donât tell them is keeping it from them longer? They are your best friends. And besides, I want to meet your friends as well. I know Jill, but I had to pretend I donât know her because you didnât want her to know about us.â
She sighed and went to his side.
âI need more time. I need the perfect timing. And the perfect spiel.â She said desperately.
He stared at her. âWhy didnât you tell them in first place?â
She shrugged. âI donât know. I just didnât⌠and I wanted to⌠butâŚâ
âYou didnât imagine it would last this long, did you?â He asked her seriously, his voice a little louder than normal.
She stared at him. âJustin, please?â
He sighed. âAlright. Alright. Iâm going.â He said.
âHow? You canât go out the door! They are there!â She said.
âWho said I was going out the door?â He muttered, and then he opened the window of her bedroom. She watched worriedly as he crossed the platform that is about one and a half meters wide and six meters long to the window of his own bedroom.
When he was safely in, she hurried towards the door.
âWhat took you so long?â Jill asked entering her apartment immediately.
âI was asleep?â She asked sarcastically.
Yuan gave her a k-ss on the cheek.
âGood morning, Sunshine.â He said, mimicking an early morning talk show host.
âWhat theâŚâ Jill started.
Adrienne realized that the bouquet of roses that Justin gave her is still sitting on her table and there were wine glasses on the table in the balcony.
âOh my God, is Troy here? Did he finally stay the night?â Yuan asked.
Adrienne shook her head. She felt so guilty. And she felt bad about having an argument with Justin after last night, which was perfect. He was wonderful. He has made her feel more special than anybody has in her entire life.
He sounded so dead serious about not keeping this thing at least to her best friends. She knew she should tell them. But she canât quite find the right time. Because it would mean she lied to them from day one.
âWhere is he?â Jill whispered.
Adrienne shook her head. âHe⌠ah⌠left last night. Had to rush off. Just had a wine and dinner with me.â
âHow sweet? Because of your promotion, isnât it?â Yuan asked.
Adrienne nodded. She wanted to lock herself in her room and cry. It gnaws her that Troy is taking credit for Justinâs thoughtfulness. She knows it isnât fair.
âAnd what is happening south of your earlobes?â Jill exclaimed.
Yuan checked it out. Too late. She forgot to take off the earrings that Justin gave her last night.
âHow gallant! My God, he must have been struck by lightning! He had suddenly gone rom-ntic!â Yuan said.
âAre these Tifannyâs?â Jill asked.
Adrienne nodded.
âThis costs a fortune you know! Itâs a carat! He must love you so much to spend all of his medical school allowance on a trinket!â Yuan said.
Adrienne went to the balcony and lighted a cigarette. She was biting her l-ips to stop herself from crying. She was melting with shame and guilt.
What has she done now?
âI have something to tell you, sweetie!â Jill started. âI was talking to Garry, the layout artist yesterday, and guess who walked in?â
She knew who walked in. And the thought made her feel even more guilty.
âJustin Adams!â She exclaimed. âHe looked absolutely handsome. But as always, he had those shades on, which makes him more handsome. Like he just stepped out from the covers of the magazine or something. And this is the story. When he walked in, he said, Hi Garry. And then he looked at me and said, Hi Jill. He knows me! He knows
my name! My God! Unbelievable. Weâre on first-name basis now!â
Adrienne looked at Jill. She was practically drooling. She felt and more and more ashamed of herself. She didnât say a word. And what would she say? Of course he knows you! He been hiding from you guys for almost two months now because I didnât want you to know that he was shagging me!
And yes, Iâve been sleeping with him almost every night!
She closed her eyes for a moment.
âSweetie, youâre still sleepy? What time did Troy leave last night?â Yuan asked.
âNo. I read some book, which is why Iâm still sleepy.â
âMy God, when I see him again, what will I say to him? Iâll say, Hi Justin. Do you think itâll be weird?â Obviously, Jill isnât ready to give up the Justin Adams episode.
âYou can try. And then tell us about it. My God, that guy is known for being a classic snob! But heâs got every right to be. Heâs rich by birth, heâs rich on his own right, he looks divine! What do you expect?â Yuan said. âAnd speaking of divinity, I wonder when Torso god on the other side would show himself.â
âYes, have you seen what he looks like, Yen?â Jill asked.
She shook her head in disbelief. She couldnât concentrate. She still couldnât get Justin out of her mind, their conversation before he left.
She sighed. Then her phone beeped.
She read the message.
Justin: Iâm going to Chicago for a week. Duty calls. I mean, my father. Iâll catch the twelve noon flight. Obviously, I lCanât come over to k-ss you goodbye. So see you when I get back.
She was too confused to answer. And worse, she felt sad and guilty.
âWhatâs bothering you, Yen? You donât seem like yourself lately. Well, you did change a lot lately, but for the better. But now, it seems like you didnât want to talk at all. Are you okay?â Yuan asked.
She shrugged. âTroy. I want to⌠I donât know⌠it seems like this thing with him is not going anywhere. We argue a lot lately. And I donât seem to care anymore. That isnât a good sign, is it?â
Yuan and Jill stared at her. None of them could say a word.
âI mean, we were so incompatible. And we still are. And thatâs not good. And⌠well⌠everytime we talk these days, itâs not complete without an argument. I want to experience more out of life. Yes. I did change a lot. And I feel good about myself. Itâs like for the first time in years, I felt like Iâm great. Iâm an amazing person. And I didnât have to live in someoneâs shadow all the time. And I want
to experience magic with someone. Someone who doesnât have to love me. But just make me feel adored. Admired. Like Iâm good enough just being myself.â Like Justin! And I want to be fair to him! But only God knows until when our thing is going to last.
Yuan reached for her hand. âWeâve been trying to tell you that for years, sweetie. But you love the guyâŚâ
She shook her head. âNow, I donât anymore. I liked him, yes. But I realize that maybe I am with him because he fits this wh0le trying-to-please-Mommy charade Iâve been keeping up for years. And I give up. Mom will never love me as much as she loved Kim. And itâs okay. As long as she loves me. I donât care.â
âThink about this, honey. When a guy brings you wine and roses and a very extravagant gift, it means, you mean a lot to him. If he did that, it means he wants you in his life, no matter how incompatible you are. Heâs trying to make it
work.â Yuan said.
âAre you guys trying to change my mind on this?â She asked.
Jill shrugged. âWe hated him before, sweetie. But lately, you went through this transformation, and you had stars in your eyes. And now, we see that heâs been spending quite some time here in your place. And recently, you looked so happy. We thought, things probably have changed. So, why are you giving up now?â
Adrienne felt more guilt. And the more guilt she felt, the surer she is that her relationshÂĄp with Troy is going nowhere, and there are a lot of things in life that she wanted to experience. So much more out of life that she wanted to feel and see. Justin opened the window for her. She wanted more of that.
âThink about it, hon.â Jill smiled uneasily.
And she did. For two straight days. That was what Justin told her the last night she was with him. Think about her relationshÂĄp with Troy. It did last for three years but it doesnât mean it will last forever. Come to think of it, she never had very much good memories with him, if ever she has memories of him at all.
Adrienne canât do anything right. More often, she was staring into space in nothing. She was always jumpingeverytime her mobile phone rings or beeps. She was waiting for Justin to call or send a message. He didnât. She didnât hear from him for three straight days.
She threw herself in her bed that evening. She didnât realize that tears were rolling down her cheeks. She hated to admit it but she misses him like hell.
She decided to take a bath before bed. She just lied there on her tub thinking. She remembered every moment she was with Justin. She remembered each day she had a smile on her face, going to
work, confident, like she never felt before in her entire life.
She realized that for each and every minute since he met her, she was floating on air. Walking on cloud nine. She felt adored. Cherished. She doesnât love Troy anymore. He has been out of her heart for months. It wasnât going anywhere. And she didnât feel for Troy anything she felt for Justin.
And worse⌠she realized that she canât be in love with Troy now⌠she has already fallen in love with someone elseâŚ
She changed into her pajamas and went to bed. Before she turned off the lights, she took her cellphone and sent Justin an SMS, before she could stop herself.
Her: Hey⌠I hope youâre okay. Take care⌠I miss you. And she pressed SEND before she could either erase the wh0le message or add I love you to it.
She waited for a wh0le hour. He didnât reply. Tears rolled down her cheeks. She blew it for sure. First, she made him feel like she wasnât proud to be associated with him in any way. And now, she realized she has just given him the first sign of
what she really felt for him. She might have blown it there as well. Guys like Justin⌠she was good for him, because she wasnât demanding anything from him. She was just having fun. And maybe so was he. Yes, he is definitely fond of her. The flowers he sent her said so, and so did the Tiffanyâs earrings. But heâs filthy rich. The amount of those
earrings is not even one tenth of what he earns everyday. It says they are okay. But it doesnât say he loves her too. It says heâs fond of her⌠for the moment, but not forever.
She cried herself to sleep that night. She hugged her pillow tight, remembering the moments when it was Justinâs bodyshe was hugging and he was hugging her back.
She must have cried for hours. And then finally, she fell asleep. In her dream, he was holding her in his arms. She was whispering his name.
Her alarm went off seven-thirty in the morning. She had a bad headache. She was still hugging her pillows, but something wasnât right. A pair of strong arms are draped around her.
She spun around and found Justin sleeping beside her. She blinked to make sure that she was awake and wasnât imagining things. She wanted to cry. She prayed, If this is a dream, donât wake me up! âCause this is just too darned rom-ntic right now!
She watched him sleep. He wasnât wearing any top. He was just wearing a pair of pajamas. How could he be here? He said he will be in Chicago for a
week. Itâs only been four days.
She took her mobile phone on the bedside table. She didnât have any messages. She sent a message to Jill, saying she cannot go to work today.
*Headache. Bad one*
She stared at Justin again. And then she leaned forward and k-ssed him on the l-ips.
He tightened his hold on her. âAdrienne.â He whispered.
She smiled to herself, closed her eyes and went back to sleep.
She woke up again an hour later. When she opened her eyes, Justin was staring at her lazily.
âGood morning.â He said.
She touched his cheek with her fingertips.
âMorning.â She smiled lazily. âWhat are you doing here? Ithought youâll be gone for a wh0le week.â
He smiled. âI finished business early. And besidesâŚâ
âBesides what?â She asked.
âYou said you missed me.â He smiled.
She blushed and looked away.
He tilted her chin up so she could look him in the eye.
âWell? Did you?â He asked.
She smiled shyly and then nodded. âAnd did you miss me?â She asked back.
He leaned forward. When his l-ips were just an inch away from hers, he said, âLike hell.â Then he k-ssed her deeply.
After the k-ss, he leaned his forehead to hers.
âYou have to go, youâre going to be late for work.â He said.
She shook her head. âNot today.â
âReally? Why?â He asked.
âI missed you like hell too.â She smiled boldly.
He chuckled. âReally? Show me.â He said.
She pushed him flat on his back and she leaned forward to k-ss him passionately. She started it, and he finished it. When it was over, her world was spinning.
They lay there unclad for a while, their legs tangled, their arms wrapped around each other.
âHonâŚâ He started. âIâm sorry I raised my voice the last time we spoke before I left.â
âIâm sorry, we argued in the first place.â She said.
He smiled. âItâs okay. I understand. I know youâre not yet ready to tell them this. And Iâm sorry if I put pressure on you. Sometimes, I just donât understand why you canât tell at least your friends. I mean⌠they are your best friends. Do you really think Iâm an assh-le that you donât want them to know that weâre seeing each other?â
She sighed. âFirst of all, youâre not assh-le. I thought you were, though.â
He looked down at her with a raised brow. âYou thought I was?â
She smiled. âDonât get mad. I just thought you were
conceited and giving women false hopes⌠itâs not so good.â
âI donât give women false hopes. It was just me. I was like that. I was non-committal. If some of the women I have been with in the past thought I was going for something serious and long-term, I donât think I could be faulted for that. From day one, they should know, I donât want complications and thereâs no strings attached. I wasnât looking for a girlfriend then.â
âThey should have known that because of your reputation?â
He nodded. âProbably. I usually get out after two dates. If I know it isnât what I was looking for, then I would slip out.â
âYeah⌠assh-le.â She rolled her eyes.
He laughed. âYouâre unfair! You thought that and yet you still went home with me when we met at Gypsys?â
She smiled wickedly. âWell, the Tequila made you look like a god! Itâs been whispering in my ear, Go on! Lose your V-rginity to this assh-le! At least he looked divine!â
He laughed. âTell me you didnât mean that!â
âWhich one? The Tequila made you look like a god thing? I think I mean that. But the k-sses you gave me made me lose myself all the way. The whispering was there, but Iâm not so sure.â
He laughed h-rder. âI picked up the wrong girl that night then? I thought you would really think I look like a god.â
âSo conceited! Just because the wh0le of New York think that, doesnât mean I do too.â
âAnd you were the one that mattered.â He shook his head. âDamn! I should have taken home the waitress that night! At least she would worshÂĄp me like a god!â
She raised a brow. âOkay, so youâre sorry now? Alright. I wonât put up a fight!â She snapped and started to stand upfrom the bed.
He pulled her back and pinned her between his body and the mattresses.
âYou⌠have a hell of a temper. You get mad easily. I was just kidding. I would never, ever, ever trade you for the waitress that night, okay? Not even for any girl in that bar.â
âYeah⌠since weâre having this conversation, why did you pick me up that night anyway? Of all the girls there, why me? Did I look like I would sleep with you?â
He smiled and shook his head. âBecause you were the only one who looked like you wonât. And it made me want you even more.â
âYouâre a bundle of conceit, you know that?â She said irritably. âAnd now you know that I would sleep with you. Does that mean you donât want me as much as you wanted me that night?â
He chuckled and pressed closer to her. She felt his
masculinity pressed in her abdomen. It was hĂŚrd and wanting.
âDoes it feel like I want you less than that night?â
âJustin⌠we justâŚâ She stammered.
He nodded. âThatâs how I want you.â He whispered and his face descended to take her in a k-ss that led to another wild ride of passion.
