It was Monday morning, the week Ghene High School began to prepare for their examination. Antonia stepped out from their house fully on uniform and a school bag hanging behind her, supported by two hands. Approaching the main road, she sighted Festus standing on uniform too like a lost child. She rubbed her eyes clean to be sure of whom they were beholding. “Festus!” she called from behind.
The boy turned attractively. He was not only taller than Antonia but also looks more matured, having a brown skin complexion. “Hey, Antonia” he smiled.
“What are you doing here?”
“I came to pick you up.”
Antonia chuckled. “Since when did this one start?”
“Last night” Festus walked a bit closer to her while the young girl stepped backward. “I saw you in my dream last night, so picking you up this morning will give me a total joy.”
Antonia couldn’t control her smile. She looked around as if searching for something. “You came to pick me with what car?” she asked, amusingly looking at Festus to know what he would say.
“I came to pick you with our school bus.” he replied hilariously. “We only have to wait for it to come. It’s my bus. I bought it.” he added while Antonia laughed out loud, clapping her hands in conjugation. Just then, the long school bus arrived. It has a yellow paint with ‘Ghene High School, Akuri’ boldly written on it. Festus and Antonia watched how the bus stopped for them to enter.
“You see?” Festus gestured at the bus. “Have you seen how it stopped for us to enter coz it’s mine?”
“Hmm.. then why is it not written ‘Festus’ school bus’?” Antonia asked as both were headeding towards the door of the bus.
“Because I don’t like bragging of my extravagant and wealthy capacity.” he replied.
Antonia entered followed by Festus who greeted the driver and said, “Please, drive safely. The boss has arrived with his crush.”
Accordingly, the funny fat old driver replied with a saluting hand beside his head. “Yes, boss!!” He smiled as he set the car in motion again. Sonner did Rachael joined the bus after a mile drive to see Festus sitting with Antonia. Luckily, she joined them coz it was three seats in one roll. She looked devastated and worried but glow in black beauty. Fellow students in the bus stared at her the same way Antonia and Festus were staring at her coz her news with Jimmy had gone round the city.
“Rachael, are you still thinking about Jimmy and his lies? I warned you but you insisted to see him that night.” Antonia said to her friend.
“But I doubt if Jimmy is joking with whatever he’s talking about.” Festus interfered. Yet, Rachael remained silent with her arms folded. Unexpectedly, some students began to shout and waving their hands through the glass of the bus. Rachael and her friends looked through their glass to know who that was, but to see Jimmy as the one. He was on his motorcycle, heading to school. He looked at the students waving at him, wondering why. Was he becoming a celebrity? Or were they mocking him for going crazy as everybody thinks. Nevertheless, he topped another gear and overtook the bus.
Rachael sat back on her seat. “Why are they shouting and waving at him anyways?” she folded her arms again.
“Isn’t it obvious that Jimmy met Ikuku? A friend of the clever man is automatically famous.” Festus said, looking at Rachael. “Jimmy loves you so I don’t see any reason why he should lie and use you for his own diabolism if truly he’s diabolical.”
“He is” Antonia frowned.
Rachael looked at her. “But what about the voice I head, Antonia? I dont know what to believe seriously.”
“The voice called Amaya and the last time I checked, your name is Rachael Ojile not Amaya Ojile.” Antonia encouraged her without knowing the truth too.
The bus stopped in,side the school compound before students obviously started stepping out to see crowd circulating Jimmy. Rachael stepped out with her friendds, amazingly looking at how students interrogated Jimmy especially the female students.
“Jimmy, is it true you met Ikuku? Is he real or a ghost?” One of the students asked.
“Is he the one that told you about the Talibans?” another asked.
“Did he speak with you in riddles?.” A female student held Jimmy closely. “Can I be your boyfriend so that I’ll get to meet Ikuku” she added.
However, Jimmy had remained quiet without answering any of them. He looked through the crowd to see Rachael’s eyes clashing with his. The girl averted them instantly. She didn’t know if she was really feeling ashamed or jealous. She couldn’t comprehend her body chemistry that moment. Just then, the female principal arrived to the crowd. Students who were afar drew near while the nearer one gave way for the principal.
“Are you all crazy!” the woman began. Her voice, paving around the vicinity. “Jimmy Okenagba shouldn’t be celebrated for his madness! He kidnapped a girl..”
“He didn’t kidnap me!” Rachael’s voice came from behind. Jimmy wasn’t the only one who looked back at her as she continued. “That’s what my parents think, but he lied and used me!” she added.
“Heeyy!” Students shouted.
“Which s€× position did you give him on the bed?” a male voice came among the students without minding the presence of the principal. Students laughed, while Jimmy became ashamed at Rachael’s statement. He would have reacted but was working according to the protocol he gave himself never to make anybody believe him or bother Rachael again..

School ended in gossip and preparation for the examination. Rachael got home, undressed before her standing mirror where she stared at herself, critically thinking about what she said to the crowd. She could picture Jimmy’s disappointing face in her head after making the statement, feeling sorry for him. Yet, believing in her parents. Suddenly, through the mirror, she saw Jimmy’s polo, the one she wore at his place. Half unclad, she went to it, slowly picked it and smelt it for the second time. She exhaled, sadly sat on the bed. She just couldn’t explain the way she felt. “I was beginning to like him..” She started thinking. “What if he’s right about me and the Talibans? God! I won’t stand the shame and all the embarrassing things I’ve said to him, made he look like a liar and insane. But will my parents lie to me? No! They have showed me nothing but love… Oh God what is all this?” she collapsed on the bed, using the polo to cover her br-ast.
At midnight, another rain began. Rachael stood up unclad from her bad, walking out of the house like someone controlled with a remote. Obviously, she was experiencing what she did at Jimmy’s residence. Mr and Mrs Ojile watched her dancing by the road like a mermaid until electric wire sparked at a distant and the ground quivering like an earthquake due to a storey building that collapsed a few miles away. Just then, Rachael fell down unconscious.
“I’ll go take her in,side” Mr Ojile whispered to her so called husband. “You can locate the building” she added.
The husband nodded, turned into a shadow and disapped like a smoke. Mrs Ojile managed to take Rachael back to her room only for the girl to wake up in her arms to see herself w-t again. “Mom, what happened?” she withdrew herself from her.
The mother remained mute, brought her towel to dry her up but Rachael moved away from her. “Tell me, mother. Why am I w-t?” she asked again.
Mrs Ojile didn’t say anything. Rachael looked through the window to see the rain heavily falling, looked at herself and lastly to the mother. She listened attentively to hear cry and shout of people as a result of the collapsed building.
“I danced in the rain again, didn’t I?
The mother kept quiet.
“Jimmy didn’t use me. He wasn’t lying” she began to shed tears. “You and Dad are the one that lied to me!”
“You’ll never leave this room until you fulfil your destiny, Amaya” Mrs Ojile said with eyes widely opened like a priestess. Rachael fell down on the floor terrifyingly as the mother took her phone and locked her in,side never to come out again.
“Oh, Jimmy..” were the last words from Rachael’s mouth as she cried in the room….
