Angel Of Mine – Episode 21

Angel of mine

Episode 21

‘Can you stop the car?’ I ask my driver.

‘Madam.’

‘Please John. We are almost there, stop the car.’

He pulls over on the other side. I have actually come to visit my grandparents, I recently came back from abroad were I had been working as a doctor. You might be surprised why I made him stop. As he is driving the car, I noticed a scotch cart parked on the other side of the road and it looks as if there is a woman crying in,side. I step out of the car.

‘Madam.’

John can be a drama King sometimes you know. It’s entirely my father’s fault who told him to take good care of me. I ignored him calling out as I walked to the scotch cart, I don’t even know why I wore the high heels, and it was hærd for me to walk with them on the sand. I got close by and I see a woman crying while there is a man shaking his head.

‘Excuse me,’ I speak and he looks at me.

He unfolds his hands and walks to me. He greets me with so much respect.

‘What happened?’

‘My brother’s wife just passed away. We were taking her to the hospital.’

‘Oh my,’ I said with hands on my mouth.

I don’t know what got me to walk to the scotch cart and I just got in,side. That’s after I had removed my heels. The other woman is crying and the dead one, I check her pulse.

‘She is not dead but her pulse is weak. She must have lost so much blood. Where is the hospital?’

‘She is not dead?’ the other woman exclaims.

‘Madam, the hospital won’t help her out.’

I know it’s something like 8 hours’ drive back to the City but do I have a choice and that is to save this woman. This woman needs help and looking at her wound on the leg, it hasn’t been addressed.

‘John, bring me my first aid kit.’

I don’t know why I parked it and when dad saw me putting it in the car boot, he laughed out loud at me. I told him that I always carry my first aid kit with me. Now he should have been here watching me using it. I had several things in,side the kit, injections and some drips. All I need to do was to try and stabilize her while John calls my dad.

‘Call my dad and tell him to bring his chopper.’

You should have seen the way he looked at me when I said that. Trust me bringing a chopper was going to be the fastest way of getting her to the hospital back in the city. I know that sounded crazy because I was at the village and who brings a chopper there. Well that wasn’t any of my problem. While John called my father, I was treating the woman. John was off the phone and he told me that my dad had agreed. So I was expecting it to arrive sooner than later. It didn’t take that long and it was only supposed to carry a few people.

‘I am going with her and so John will drive you to the City okay,’ I said to the man as I was getting in,side.

There was so much noise; they had brought a stretcher bed as well. Dad sent one of the nurses at our hospital and the driver as well.

‘Thank you,’ he responded and I could see that he was worried.

Probably confused that I was helping them. My mother died a hero and so I am helping out as well.

‘She is going to be okay. John will give you my number okay,’ I said holding his hand.

Fast forward we got at the hospital and dad was already waiting for me. The room had been set for her.

‘She has a weak pulse,’ I said to dad and one of the nurses handed me my coat, ‘thank you,’ I said as I walked behind the guys pushing the stretcher bed.

Can you believe I had travelled there to see my grandparents but now it had turned into something else? I told dad to wait outside for me as I try to get blood for her. She had lost so much blood and right now she needed the blood transfusion. I was glad when her type was already available, even if it wasn’t; I was going to give her my blood. I made sure to do some blood tests just before giving her the blood. I worked the wh0le night and only got to sit down the next following day when her condition was stable. I walked out yawning,

‘Coffee,’ he said with a smile.

‘Thank you Senzo,’ I said taking it from him as I walked to my office.

I opened the door and went to sit on my chair whilst Senzo sat opposite me.

‘I feel so tired,’ I said.

‘I know how to m-ssage,’ he said and I almost got choked.

Senzo is one of the doctors taught by my mother. He is from Ghana but has been living in Zimbabwe for quiet some few years now. I found him at the hospital when I came back, me and my dad’s hospital we built to honor my mother’s memory and appreciating what she had done for people. I didn’t respond but instead pretended as if I had not heard what he said.

‘I should go and check up on her.’

‘You barely ate your breakfast.’

‘I will eat it later S..,’ I tried getting up when I felt little dizzy.

‘I will tell one of the nurses to be checking up on her. You have your breakfast. You need to at least go home and take a bath. You were here the wh0le night. I know you are worried about her and I honestly don’t know why when she is not your relative.’

I just looked at him not believing what he had said. So should we only be worried about people we know? I was very disappointed by what he had said.

‘I am sorry; I didn’t mean to say that.’

‘Maybe I should take a shower in my office. Can you leave?’ I ask him.

He got up and slowly walked to the door while I pretended to be busy. When he closed the door I inhaled deeply. I decided to take a shower and had some of my clothes kept in my office. Dad had promised to come by later in the afternoon and so I was sort of expecting his visit and his lecture as well. I know my dad, I am very sure that he had quiet a lot of things to ask me. Questions like, why I had to cancel my trip when I was almost there? Why I had to help some strange woman that I didn’t know? I know he was going to ask me some of those questions. I finished bathing and I was still waiting for her results from the test lab. I mean I had seen such a wound before that looked more like a cancer.

From the information I had gathered, well it was John who helped me out with the information when he asked her relatives. They said that she was hit by a car but even though the wound could have healed. There was something about her wound, the reason why I asked for some tests to be done.

‘I was about to walk out,’ I said when dad opened the door and I was already up on my feet, ‘I needed to see her.’

‘Why am I getting a feeling that you are running away from me, well sort of avoiding me sweetheart,’ he said and we hugged.

‘I would never do that daddy; it’s just that I wanted to check up on her.’

‘I am just here for few minutes and then I am gone. Can we?’ he said as he gestured me to sit back.

We sat on the couch which was placed in my office. I had a nice office, decorated by dad. He knew my tests very well. Well he was married to my mother. My mother and I we were sort of like twins. We loved the same things and had the same test when it comes to furniture and stuff.

‘What do you know about this woman Angela?’

‘Do I have to know everything about her so that she can be treated? Why are you beginning to sound like Senzo? What’s wrong with you two?’ I said feeling irritated by their remarks.

‘I don’t mean to offend you; I was just asking and at the same time being proud of you. What you did for that woman is amazing Angela.’

‘Really dad,’ I said with a smile spread across my face.

And there I was thinking that he had come to scold me or do something worse. He was my dad and different from other man like Senzo, I should have known that. Why would I want to compare him to Senzo, the guy who absolutely brags about everything as if being a doctor is a big deal? Forgive me I didn’t hate Senzo but he was just full of it and people like him, I just didn’t like them and so we can safely remove the hate word, I bet it’s too strong for an expression.

‘Thank you for being on my side. I just felt the need to help her out,’ I said and few minutes later there was a knock at my door.

The guy from the science lab had brought me the results.

‘That was fast,’ I said to him with a smile just after taking the khaki envelope from him.

He just smiled.

‘Thank you,’ I said to him and when he was about to walk out, I told him to wait a little and explain some things that I might find hærd to understand. Dad was still in the room and I opened the envelope and took out the results.

‘You mean she was poisoned?’ I asked him just after going through the papers.

‘It must be a possibility that the pills she was taking were changed by someone. Instead of the pills helping her to get better, they made things worse. They were like an acid, eating her flesh but the good news is that, there is a cure. Something that could help her wound and I am willing to help.’

‘Dad where did you get this angel of mine?’ I said praising him.

‘No, ma’am you are the angel. You saved her life,’ he said and I just smiled.

At least she was going to get better and that made me happy.
