Hurt would be an understatement word to use right now because I was more than hurt and we all know what has made me feel that way. If it’s not Emily who has made me felt that way then it could have been who? My heart aches as I look at his fragile body. I was called few days ago by Tiffany; y’all remember Tiffany, my sister’s friend right. Well I have never been that close with her and when she called me, I wasn’t expecting her call. I travel all around the world and I was in South Africa when she called and told me that I had to come back because things didn’t look good on my sister’s side.

Apparently Jamal had been fed with some poison and Tiffany refused to tell me the wh0le story. She was wise enough to tell me the hospital that he was being kept and I immediately came back to the country. I drove to the hospital and went to take Jamal, these people were not taking care of him and I had to try by all means to save his life. I remember back then when I had taken a trip to India, I met a young lady who was also a doctor from Zimbabwe. Her name was Angela, I quickly grabbed my phone and thank goodness I still had her phone number. I dialed her number and I knew that she was back in Zimbabwe. She had told me about a patient she had treated, some old lady who had been poisoned and the poison was slowly eating her wounded leg. You see that’s why I needed to talk to her; maybe she was going to be familiar with the poison.

‘Ernest,’ she responded.

‘Angela, how are you?’

‘I am okay Ernest. What a surprise?’

‘I thought about you today,’ I said and laughed a little.

‘Oh please. What’s up? Tell me about your case.’

You see she already knew why I had called her. Before leaving the hospital, I had taken Jamal’s file, trust me it wasn’t easy but I had threatened to sue their hospital, that’s the main reason why they just had to let me go with the file. I found out about everything that I needed to know. He was poisoned and had been in a comma for some few weeks. I told Angela everything.

‘Okay, let me do this Ernest. I will travel to Bulawayo tomorrow.’

I was in Bulawayo and she was in Harare.

‘I am sorry for giving you such a burden.’

‘Oh no Ernest, you helped me out in India and the least I could do is to come over there and help you out.’

‘Thank you Angela. How is your patient?’

‘What a miracle Jamal? She is getting better and even eating. So that’s why I think we should try on some medicine that I have been working on with my team, maybe your patient might be healed too. I will be there the first thing tomorrow morning,’ she said.

‘I will be expecting you and thank you very much Angela.’

‘You are most welcome Ernest.’

I hanged up the phone call and walked in,side. Mum was laughing. Not my mother, the woman I had taken from the village, well I just decided to call her mum. Her name was Maria and she had told me a lot of things about her son which she never called by name but used the term ‘son.’ Every time she told me stories about her son, I could see the sad look on her face, there was a sad story behind that look and I never asked her more questions. She was laughing with Mai Chido who had been paying her visit and Ba Chido had just gone out with dad. Well he helped dad at his company and he was thinking of employing him.

‘You finished your food,’ I said sitting next to her.

‘Yes, Mai Chido forced me to eat.’

‘I told her that she should gain some weight, she looks slender now,’ Mai Chido said and we all laughed.

Ohh there was never a dull moment with these two ladies. I was going to discharge Mama Maria very soon and I had asked her to move in with me. I know that sounds too much, she is still a stranger and I know nothing about her but something just kept on telling me that I should protect her. What if she was an Angel sent by my mother to fill her place that void in my life. Mama Maria had said that she didn’t want to be a burden but I wanted to make sure that her wound was going to completely heal before she goes back to the village that’s if I was going to allow her to go back because I think I had some attachment issues. I had already grown fond of her and I just loved having her around, she sort of reminded me of my mother. Whoever tried to kill her must have been the devil’s daughter, I didn’t see anything wrong about her but a widow who only loved his son and had survived to see her son again.

‘Can I go to the toilet?’ she asked.

‘Should I accompany you?’ I asked her.

She took my hand.

‘I am now okay Angela, I can now walk,’ she said and got off the bed.

She walked out of the room and I just smiled at her as she closed the door.

‘She is so lucky,’ said Mai Chido.

‘Yes, she is.’

‘No, I mean she is lucky to have you in her life. Angela you are an angel and your mother would be proud of you. You have helped Maiguru and words are not enough to thank you for everything that you have done for us. Honestly I really wish her son could have met you first than..,’ she stopped.

I could see that there was something that I wasn’t supposed to know but I didn’t want to know anything. Honestly I was happy and glad that Mama Maria was getting better, that’s what counted the most, her health and nothing else. We talked for a while with Mai Chido and she only went out to buy Mama Maria some fruits. Mama Maria walked in few minutes late.

‘Where is Mai Chido?’

‘She went to buy some fruits for you.’

‘You people are over feeding me,’ she said with a laugh.

‘You need to stay healthy mama. I wouldn’t mind buying you food for every minute. I want you to be strong,’ I said to her and could see a tear escaping her eyes, ‘what’s wrong?’

‘Come here Angela.’

I walked to her and she engulfed me into a tight hug. I patted her back as I listened to her sniffing, I knew she was crying and this was bringing tears to my eyes. She let go and held my hand.

‘Angel of mine,’ she said to me and the way she just said it brought tears streaming down on my cheeks, she wiped them away with her hand.

I can’t believe I had fallen in love with her and we instantly clicked. I have never had such strong bonds or relationsh¡p with my patients before but with Mama Maria, it was just something different, something worth it and something amazing.

‘Thank you my daughter. May the good Lord bless you abundantly, I don’t know what I could have done without you Angela, and I don’t know if I could have survived. I love you.’

‘I love you more Ma.’

I can’t believe we ended up crying and dad walked in on us in that state. You could have seen the way he was smiling at me, the old man though. He had said some good things about Mama Maria. Anyway I asked Senzo if he could discharge her the next following day since I needed to travel. Ernest had called me. Ernest was one of the doctors from my country whom I had met when I was on a workshop in India and we even saved a patient together, he was a good human being to talk to and just adorable. From then we kept in touch and it was few minutes or is it hours ago when he called me and he needed my help. Since mama was feeling much better than before, I was set to travel to Bulawayo the next following day. I was about to ask Mai Chido to move in my house with mama so that she can have someone to take care of her.

‘We are going to miss you,’ said Mai Chido as we were sitting with mama.

Man I never left the hospital and even refused to go out with Senzo when he asked me out. I made several excuses, Senzo was just so full of himself and he wasn’t my type of guy. Dad always asked me what kind of man; I wanted to be with,

‘Someone who doesn’t brag about anything, someone who is humble, kind and respects women,’ I had told him and it was unfortunate that I hadn’t met such kind of man.

Well I guess God’s time is the best.

‘I will miss you more,’ I replied to her, ‘but since both of you have got a phone, I will be calling more frequently to check up on you two,’ I said.

‘We will be waiting for your call.’

‘It has started,’ said mama.

We were waiting for our drama, Kulfi the star at Zee world. I noticed she loved watching Indians and I hated them at first but because of her, I have grown to love them. We are always watching the soapie together and we all look like one big family. It was so nice seeing mama laughing out loud; I was feeling much better now that she was even smiling. I k-ssed her on the cheek.

‘What was that for?’ she asked with a smile.

‘I just love you.’

‘You look like mother and daughter,’ said Mai Chido.

And a lot of people had said that outside when I took mama for a walk. They said we looked like mum and daughter.

‘Well because she is my mother,’ I said,

‘And you are my daughter,’ she tickled me and that made me laugh a lot.

I saw dad standing looking at us throw the window and he just smiled. Since mum died, I had never been this happy with anyone and Mama Maria just made me happy. I thank God for making me go to that village. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would have met her and I am happy that I saved her life.
