Bandits’s attack on Akeredolu: We are now scared – Yoruba elders, Gani Adams

– Some groups in Yoruba land are currently calling for a security summit over continued cases of kidnapping

– The secretary of the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Kunle Olajide, says if a governor can be attacked, then Nigerians are helpless

– The Aare Onakankafo of Yorubaland, Aare Gani Adams, wants governors and traditional rulers to show support for the conveyance of the security summit

There is palpable fear in the south western part of Nigeria following the growing cases of kidnappings especially along the Ibadan-Akure expressway.

The fear was recently further compounded with the confirmation by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state that he was attacked along the same road and that his security aides saved the situation.

Reacting to the attack on the governor, the secretary of the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), Kunle Olajide, said the situation had become scary.

“The attack signals a terrible security situation, if a governor’s convoy that was heralded and piloted by security operatives could be attacked, then we are helpless,” he said.

The news reports that the Afenifere, through Yinka Odumakin, its spokesperson, said: “There is a need to address the situation”.

“It is unfortunate that a governor is being targeted by kidnappers in the South-West region.”

In his opinion, the Aare Onakankafo of Yorubaland, Aare Gani Adams, said the current situation calls for the org-nisation of a security summit.

Adams wondered: “If a governor’s convoy can be attacked, who else is spared?

“The situation has gone beyond control. There is an urgent need to hold this security summit.”

He noted that he was interested in the conveyance of a security summit but that he would need the support of the governors and traditional rulers in the region.

On its part, the Yoruba Summit Group (YSG) said the time had become ripe to end kidnapping in the region.

Speaking through Mogaji Gboyega Adejumo, its publicity secretary, the group said: “What the people of the south-west will not do in Fulani land, no Fulani should attempt on our land.”

The CP, who disclosed this on Wednesday, June 12, said the serving police inspector, Salvation Kpun, attached to OPS department in Imo was arrested at Works Layout Owerri in connection with armed robbery.
