He halts, and then he slowly stands up from my body.

“You’re not supposed to ask that.. ” he says and sits in the bed edge. His voice sounds deeper like he’s pissed with the question I asked.

“Why?… It’s something you can just say… Yo….”

“It’s something I can’t say.. ” he yells looking back at me. Now that’s not the way I want this to be.
“F-ck, ” he cusses under his breath and stands up lighting a cigar he must have taken from the drawer I think.

“I’m sorry for shouting but that question isn’t a place we should visit.” he says and I scoff.

“Look.. ” I say and stand from the bed. “I’m just tryna help…”

“How do you plan on helping.. ” he says blowing out smoke.
“You can’t help me.. ” he says and I don’t miss the glimpse of tears in her eyes.

“Okay… ” I say trying my best way of speaking so I can convince him.
“I bet you don’t wanna die right? I know deep down in you, you really wanna survive after all this shit, you wanna live a normal life without hiding under masks, get a wife, kids and mingle with friends. I know you really want all of this and seriously I want them for you too” I say studying him to see if he’s following.

He sits on a table and asks.. “So how do you intend on helping..?” he asks with a chuckle.

“If you tell me the source of your power, I can get a way to stop all the shits of you not surviving at end. ” I tell him convincingly. He stares at me for a while and laughs softly.

“You don’t know what you’re saying,” he says and walks to the bathroom. What’s wrong with this fella.

“Look, I don’t care, you can die for all I care.. ” I yell. I’m gonna get outta here, tell momma I can’t do this, I’m quitting my job too. I wasn’t made for this stress.

I walk into the bathroom and switch on the shower to take my bath, I take off my mask and look into the mirror, the face no one would like to see under the mask. I sniff and weep a little, I didn’t think this all well from the beginning, I should have known, I wouldn’t get my power the way I got it. I should have just left the revenge and live my normal life. I never knew it’d be this difficult. Now, after everything, after all the stuff… I’m still gonna die, without gaining anything.

I think about all the times I’ve used recking havoc, how many bad deeds I’ve done, no way I can correct them. I regret all of my action. To worsen it all, Greg’s dead.

“F-ck..” I gro-n and hit my hands on the zinc making the mirror in front of me to shatter. I tighten my jaws and breath raggedly. My life’s so f-cked up.

“Easy there…” I hear a still cool voice and everything in the bathroom feels cold. I turn back and I see her, this beautiful woman who isn’t aging, the most beautiful and elegant face, her light skin glowing in the water surrounding her, he dark long hair flows along with the water. He fish tail swingling and wobbling, keeping her balanced as she stands in the body of crystal water she came in. That’s the queen of the coast, the woman I got my powers from.

I really feel scared right now, is she here to take me? Oh no, when I’m not done?

“What are you doing here?.. ” I manage to mutter with the little courage left in me.

“I’ve been expecting you….. James or should I call your name?” she says sarcastically moving to my side still the water body surrounding her.

“What are you doing here?..” I ask again.

“What a handsome face you’ve been keeping all this while..” she mutters tracing her cold hands on my face as I shift my face sideways.

“I Said what do you want?” I say yelling a little.

“Easy… I’m not taking you now…. I know that’s your greatest fear. Prepare, cos four days to now, I’m expecting you, all should be over by then.. ” she says and turns back from me as she swims off and slowly she vanish.

F-ck, I was damn scared. In one thought, I put my mask back on walk out of the bathroom, I’m telling Erica everything..

I dress up and was about going out.

“Erica.. ” I hear him call and I halt at the door.

“What?” I say.

“Come sit down, I wanna tell you everything” he says and I’m more than surprised, woah why the sudden change of heart.

I slowly turn back to look at his masked face. “Are you serious?” I ask him.

“Yeah… ” he mutters and I walk to sit back in the bed.

“Now tell me.. ” I say.

And he starts. (View it like a flashback”

“I just finished my final year in high school when all that shit happened. I was weighed down really bad. For days, I wouldn’t drink or eat, I wouldn’t sleep. The picture of my parents and sister struggling for life keeps playing in my head. It was really hærd, I had that grief in my heart, and the quest to revenge has been on mind. Long story short, I gained admission into Lagos State University and that was I met Greg… Greg.. ” he says and chuckle as he sniffs muffling his tears.

“We started our friendsh¡p and we became so close that we do everything together, we’re always seen together, even though we live separately.. ”

“Who was sponsoring you in school since your parents ain’t alive.” I cut in.

“A church helped me.. ” he replies and I nod then he continues.
“As friends, you know, we share secrets, then one day, I told him about how my parents died and how I really wanna revenge but don’t know how to… He thought for a while and then he Said he was gonna take me somewhere. Three days later, he took me to a woman, very old woman and it was from this woman I got something. She gave me a leaf and Said
‘go to the ocean, the lonely part of the beach. Put this leaf in your mouth and walk into the ocean, till it covers you, yiull be able to breath and if luck finds you, you’ll meet the queen of the coast, if she favors you and gives you what you want? You’ll be there for 7 hours which will be seven days here on land.’ she narrates.

‘But mama, why if I don’t find favor?’ I ask.

‘You’ll die’ she replies and I kinda shiver. ‘Are you ready to do it?’ she asks. Without thinking, I replied

‘I’ve made up my mind.. No turning back’ I say and she nods. She then turn to Greg.

‘You’ll stay at the beach for seven days, if he doesn’t return? forget him. but keep watch.’ the mama instructs and we left.

Long story short, we head to the beach the next day.

‘Are you ready for this?’ Greg asks. I inhale and exhale.

‘I’m born ready’ I say and put the leave in my mouth.

‘Good luck’ Greg says and I nod and enter the ocean, going deeper and deeper until the water covers me and I fall down down into, I feel myself floating and I pass out

I open my eyes and I find myself knelling down facing groups of mermaids, in a place that looks like a heavenly palace made of gold and diamonds. I was afraid and immediately regretted my coming. My first time seeing, they’re so beautiful.

An older one comes out and she looks royal.

‘What brings you to my territory?’ she asks and I couldn’t reply.

“Wht do you want?’ she asks and then I found my voice.

‘I need powers, I wanna take revenge’ I reply her. She chuckles and swims around and then back to me.

‘Do you think you have what it takes?’ she asks, and without thinking I reply yes and she laughs.

‘You’ll do one thing for me and all the power you want will be yours.’ she says.

‘What’s that?’ I ask.

‘I’ll tell you later.. Come with me’ she say and I follow.

Long story short, I had s€× with the queen of coast and I was kept in the belly of a large whale for 4 hours and then she let’s me go saying.

‘Never fail your promise.’

“So now you know.. I got my powers from the Marine world.” he finally say.

“Woah, what promise is she talking about?” I ask.

“That’s the ‘I won’t make it part’ I’ve been saying.”

“What’s it? ” I ask

“I already sold my soul to her and there’s no turning back. After everything, I’ll walk into the ocean alive…”
