I woke up few minutes to 7 & I was glad that I was not feeling much pain. I knelt down by d bed & thanked God so much for everything he did for me.
After d lengthy prayer, I went to d bathroom to take my bath.
Thank God that I had struggled to wash my gown yesterday
despite my aching body cos I didn’t like putting on other people’s clothes no matter d
closeness. I had worn Prisca’s nightie yesterday but that was different. As I showered, I noticed that my feet were still
sore but I paid them no heed.
I came out of d bathroom & put on my blue gown, thanks to d light material it
was, it was already dry. I took my bag & started going through
its contents,I was surprised when I saw d envelope that I was given in d concert first. I
opened it & when I counted d money, it summed up to 20,
000 Naira. I was happy that at least, I would have money for some clothes. I can’t resume
work on Monday with my gown,
I thought with a smile. I searched d bag & met everything intact, including my purse, ATM card etc.
Prisca came in & was surprised to find me awake.
“woow, I thought u would still be asleep, I would if I had gone
through what u did”, she said with a smile.
I smiled & leaned on d bed dramatically, “I could go back to sleep if u want, I don’t mind
being pampered”, I said feigning tiredness although I felt a little bit weak.
“who would pamper u? Abeg stand up joor, lets go & eat”
“What of mumcy?” I asked
“Dad & mum are both waiting 4u at the dining. I explained everything to them & if I hadn’t
insisted otherwise, mum would be here now, although, they
were not happy that I sneaked out of d house”, she said winking at me.
I smiled & got up from d bed,held her by d wa-ist & playfully pushed her towards d
“well, lets go then, I could eat an elephant”
Tunji arrived at Boruwa lane & looked around happily making sure that he was not being
followed. He got to d footpath & stopped his car. He locked his car & went through d
footpath on foot. When he was about getting to d building, he looked back to be totally sure he was not being followed b4 he entered the building. When he
entered d building, it was totally quiet & he thought they might be upstairs since it was a
one story building. After
checking all d rooms
downstairs, he climbed d stairs & upon arrival, he still did not see anyone. He was not finding it funny so he took out his phone & called Tolu.
“Oga mi, good morning, I am already on my way to-“Tolu
“shut up now”, he ordered,
“I am at d location now & I cant
find anyone. Are u playing games with me?” he said yelling.
Tolu was taken aback,
“NO… I dare not…. Pls let me call d guys maybe they had to change
location for some reasons”
“hurry up, I am losing my patience”, he said & hung up.
Richard was surprised to find out that he had actually fallen asleep yesterday. He had gone
back to Deji’s room & found him sleeping soundly & d sleep seemed to be contagious that he went back to his office
& slept like a baby.
His office was a very big one which included a toilet & bathroom so he went in, had his bath & wore another cloth
which he had brought from home. He wore his suit & made for Tony’s office to give him d
goodnews & find out d
outcome of his outing yesterday.
As he was going he saw Adewale coming towards him &was
“Good morning doctor Richard”
“Good morning Adewale, it is
good to see u looking fresh”
Richard said stretching forth his hand for a handshake.
“Deji’s parents just left this place so I decided to see u to know how he is faring”
Richard smiled at Adewale &said, “u can relax now, he is
out of coma”
Adewale jumped on Richard & he almost fell down.
“I am sorry”
he said leaving d doctor alone.
“thank Yo Lord” he said &faced Richard, “Thank u doc, i… I am so greatful”.
“Thank God not me, I only did my job, God heals”
“I would go & inform d parents”, he said & rushd out of d hospital. Richard smiled & went into Tony’s office.
Tunji walked from one end of d building to d other, matching
furiously. Just when everything seemed to be working, those
idiots had blundered it. He looked at the time, it was almost time for his flight to take off &
he was still here waiting 4d fools that that Tolu of a boy sent
to get Belina.
He left the building cos
bushy area was beginning to scare him so he headed towards
his car. He met Tolu, Spanner &Sparrow coming midway coming
towards him & his anger multiplied when he did not see
Belina with them.
He charged forward &tried to calm his nerves cos those guys may be dangerous & it would be one against three.
“Where is Belina”, he asked through clenched teeth.
Spanner opened his mouth,
“i…she… ehm…”, he stopped as Tunji
moved towards him, sizing him up like he was an ant. He was
short so he had to look up to Tunji but that was a mistake cos as soon as he looked up,
Tunji sent him crashing into a nearby bush.
Tunji moved to Sparrow &asked him d same question,
“Where is Belina”
Sparrow looked very strong &rugged so Tunji knew that he had to be careful with him no
matter d answer.
“Oga, we do wetin we ask u to do o, but that girl be winch, we no even know as she leave our front & d next thing we see be say, we dey pursue her & b4 we open our eyes, close
am, she don enter motor”, he said & then pointed at his leg,
“see, see my leg… d motor almost killed me” .
Tunji wished he had a gun to shoot him dead instantly, but instead, he faced Tolu.
“What is d meaning of this now? what kind of rubbish is this? i should be at d airport now, ehn…”
“i am sorry, Tunji, i didn’t know that these idiots would spoil
things this way”, Tolu said
Tunji glared at him. i want to see Belina today, did u hear me?
Today. If u don’t have belina with u, make sure u have my money” he said & pushed
Sparrow into d bush as he made for his car.
Mr Badmus got to d airport much earlier than he ought to & he sat down in his car
waiting for Tunji. he put on d radio in his car & 4d first time in a long while, he danced to d music which was being
played in d radio.
After he had waited for one hour & hadn’t seen Tunji & Belina, he called Tunji’s line. He did not
pick d first time so he called d 2nd time, already getting worried.
Tunji picked d phone
“Hello, Tunji. I have been at d airport for over an hour now &
i have not seen u, what is up?”
“Oh pls, spare me all that. That miserable daughter of urs is
nowhere to be found”, he replied.
Shocked, he scre-med,
“Pls, don’t deceive me, are u telling me that u know nothing
about this”, Tunji asked shouting angrily.
“Don’t ahn tunji me. if u don’t produce ur daughter today, be
ready to return all d money i have been giving u since this
matter started. I have been recording it & I have given u nothing less than 180, 000 Naira.
Don’t joke with me o, failure to produce any of d two, i would
get u arrested. U should
know, without me telling u that i mean what i just said & i
have enough power to back me up”, Tunji said and hung up.
I entered d dining room along side prisca & immediately Mrs
Jegas, Prisca’s mother, saw me,she jumped from her seat &
came to hold me tenderly. She had been almost like a second
mother to me ever since she knew me as her daughter’s friend. Her husband was also in d same vein although he covered his own; men’s characteristics. She was also so
emotional so i was not surprised when i saw her face swimming
with tears. The little display of affection made me feel sick cos it made me remember what it had been like with my mother. My
mother was not one who was perfect, infact, she was one of
the most imperfect people on earth but i loved her all d same.
I quickly cleared some air by saying, “mum, it is not a big deal… or maybe it is but i am
“No u look tired baby, come & sit down”, she said &moved me to a seat & quickly stuffed my plate with food.
Mr Jegas, prisca’s father who could not hide his anger later
said as we ate, “How can a man do this to his own daughter? He
must be dealt with” He looked at me & said, “u can stay here for as long as u want &
anything u need, u can count on us”.
I muttered my sincere
appreciation & went to hug them lovingly. I sat down on my sit & i looked at Prisca who
was smiling at me
Mr. Badmus drove like a mad man back to his house & two times, almost collided with two vehicles because of his mental
distraction. He got home &sluggishly dragged himself into d house but once he got inside d sitting room, he sat down on d floor with his back against d door & put his hands on
“Ah… I am finished”, he yelled,
“Belina has killed me… she has finished finished me, she ruined
all my plans, &… & where…
ah, where would I get d one 180,000 from today, ehn?”
He remembered how Belina’s mother, Linda, with d circ-mstances surrounding d time & cursed that day with all
his might. Since she came into his life, everything had gone
from good to bad & from bad to worse & now that he had a
chance to re-write his destiny, that witch has snatched that chance away from him giving
him more problem than he ever bargained for.
He had been 28yrs
old when he met Linda. He didn’t know d love of a mother cos she was always on
business trips not giving a d–n about whatever happened to
him but as busy as his father was he still had time for him. He had
been on a journey with his father one day when he was 25 when they got involved in an
accident. The accident did not claim his life but it claimed his father’s life. When he became
28, he went to d
doctor cos he had slept with several girls without protection & did not record any of them coming to him with d ‘I am pregnant’ story. a test had been
carried out which brought his worst nightmare to light. The
doctor had looked him straight in d face & said, “…I am sorry, u can never be able to
impregnate a woman”.
He had been like a fallen tree for months. The friends he had told,
instead of pacifying &
consoling him had mocked him & helped him spread d news.
He had been stinkingly rich then so one day when he was checking out of a hotel that was
popularly known in d island to be a ‘hotel for d rich’ after a
business trip, he saw a very very beautiful young lady crying on d staircase. He was instantly drawn to her, so he approached her & asked her what d
matter was. She said,
“I came to see a man here but he threw me
He was taken aback wondering how a reasonable man could
throw this striking lady out without a second thought. After much persuasion, she opened up & said,
“I met him like a month ago & he promised to take care of me but now I am pregnant & he is denying it, saying he
has a wife that he loves, he did not tell me that b4 o.
He took her to his house. He had d
servants prepare her a warm bath & after her bath, she had slept like a newly born baby. She
actually looked like one. When she woke up d next morning he had called her, told her his
problem & promised to take care of her & d child if she allows d child to bear his surname. She had agreed
instantly & he also made her promise never to disclose that
secret to their child. They had lived in luxury for 5yrs &he noticed d time that Linda
started falling in love with him.
He was taken by her beauty but he just was not in love with her.
Belina grew to be a carbon copy of her mother & much more
beautiful that she looked like a doll most of d time. This made
Mr Badmus exceedingly angry because he could boast about being her father in public but in
his heart, d truth that he could never have a child however ugly, made him despise Belina. Things became bad after 5yrs & he took it out big time on Linda blaming her for misfortunes & he would have transferred it also
on Belina if Linda hadn’t been protecting her all d way
Mr. Badmus wanted to just die as he looked at how far he had
depreciated. He wished he had abandoned Linda on d step that day. He looked around at all
he was worth in d sitting room & said to himself, “if it is d
last thing I do, I would make sure that Belina pays for this”..
Tolu took out d 150, 000 Naira he had collected from Tunji for
d job & put it in his cross bag. When he was about to step
out of his house, he thought about it again & removed 50.000 from d money & dropped it. Tunji would have
to accept d money like that, at least d job was carried out only that those idiotic boys blundered it. He took something else & put it in his pocket. If he won’t accept it, I would make him accept it by force.
He got to Tunji’s house & upon arrival, he met Tunji in his sitting
room about to finish a bottle of whiskey. Tunji looked at him
immediately he entered & his eyes sent bullets right through his heart. Tolu was never
intimidated by anyone so he marched right towards him, brought out d 100, 000 Naira
& placed it right there on d bar.
“That is 100, 000 Naira. I removed 50, 000 cos d job was carried out only that d girl ran away”.
Tunji lifted d cup of whiskey to his lips but instead of him to drink it, in a flash, he poured it in Tolu’s face.
“Jesus…” Tolu said, startled.
Tunji laughed slightly & d next second, his face was blank like he hadn’t been laughing merely seconds ago. “u better complete my money, right here &now, if not, uhn, u would see”.
Very slowly like in all these action movies, Tolu brought out his gun at placed it right on Tunji’s forehead. Tunji turned to a stone
with seconds & he started shivering like he had fallen into d type of ice water that was
showed in Titanic.
Tolu laughed heartily, “so,u no even get liver. Give me one reason why I should not blow
ur head off”, he said. Tunji kept on saying pls but he had stepped on Tolu’s toes. “u
have never been slapped by a woman & u wanted her to pay for it, so also no one had
dared pour a cup of water on my face not to mention a drink. Well,
when I blow off ur head, I would be able to take d wh0le money. Say hello to d devil for
me”, he said & pulled d
As d day went by, I almost forgot completely about d
event of the previous day. Prisca made everything very enjoyable & my newly found parents made me feel like a little girl
again. They were very
comfortable. Not exceedingly rich
but they could easily buy whatever they wanted without
thinking twice. They
took me out & got me new sets of clothes, shoes bags &
everything they felt was customary. Anyone that did not
know them would think I was their daughter.
Being a weekend, everyone was at home. Mum almost overfed me & I commented on it but she would not have any excuses. She
said I was still weak no matter what I said & that I should just eat & sleep. Although I was not so used to being fussed over, I
enjoyed it & I made myself feel like a baby for d first time in my
I strolled out with Prisca in d evening.
Though Prisca’s parents pamper
a lot, they were also
disciplinarians& did not even condone laziness. That is d reason why they did not employ
any house help. I walked beside
Prisca & I noticed that she had been silent for most of d evening.
“What’s up Prisca?” I asked.
She sighed, “u don’t know how happy I am to have u here with me. It had been really
tough living alone with my parents without any young person to chat with. Sometimes I
feel older than I actually am”
I laughed heartily,
“cmon now,ur parents are not old, I am
very sure they both still turn heads”, I said winking honestly.
“so,u know about
the turning of heads abi? Who taught u” she asked mischievously.
“Abeg leave me joor, u have started”, I said trying to avoid d
place I knew she was headed
“u should join d convent
baby girl, only that u are not a saint” she said. I stopped & placed my hands on my hips
“u this girl don’t have respect again o, am I d one u are talking to” I asked looking upset & Prisca laughed. She was
actually older than me with 3months & some days.
Prisca stood in front of me &used her eyes to trace my body like she was a guy & I instantly
became uncomfortable. She laughed heartily &had to hold her sides trying to still d
laughter. I hissed,
“so u have not thrown away ur acting skills abi?” I asked. It had been a
long time since she did that & she always did that to drive in her point.
“You see? u are not immune to guys & what I just did confirm
it”. She came over & placed her hand on my shoulder. “Give urself d chance to love
someone &u would be as happy as I am with Tony”. I remembered what I saw
yesterday & blushed. She laughed again for a long time & I finally smiled uncomfortably. She did not stop
laughing so I gave her a tender blow on her arm & she ran off laughing. There was just
something about being with Prisca, she could make u remember ur time as a child with so much ease that u want
to behave like a child.
I was enjoying myself 4d first time in a very
Tony was exceedingly happy when Richard told him about Deji’s stability. It had been a long time since a casualty had been
recorded in their hospital & he had prayed that it remain that way although his prayer had doubled when he saw d way
Richard was taking it. He knew that if d outcome had been
otherwise, Richard would be adversely affected even if he did
not tell anyone cos he had this arrogant exterior that never
wanted anyone to see his pain.
He had known Richard right from his secondary school days
& they had been inseparable friends although they got
separated a bit when they went to d higher institution, fate
brought them back to each other. Richard who was a complete Nigerian looked more
foreign & was often mistaken for a half cast cos of his wavy hair & non-Nigerian
voice. He was given birth to in America but when his parents
got divorced 7yrs after he was born, his father had taken custody of him while his mother
took the other two girls.
He entered Deji’s room & found him awake looking confused.
“Hello, how are u feeling?” he
asked smiling at Deji.
Deji looked at him more
confused, “I don’t know who u are”
“it is alright, I am ur doctor”
“u don’t understand, I… I don’t know anything. The only thing I
remember is being hit by a big bus. Where was I going…Who am
i?” Deji lamented.
Tony felt distraught but did not let it show on his face(one of d
virtues a doctor should possess)so he just said still smiling, “u just need to rest a little bit & I am sure u would remember it all in a short while. It is perfectly normal at this stage”. When it
became obvious that Deji would not be able to relax cos of his confusion, Tony sedated him & went in search of Richard.
Mr. Badmus had called his friends seeking for financial help but
none of them wanted to help him. He could not go to his bank
to seek for a loan either so he decided to wait at home keeping
a low profile & hoping that Tunji would not come. The entire
money he had was 50k & he took it home incase Tunji showed, he would not be empty handed.
He switched on d Tv
desperately trying to calm his nerves & what he saw chilled him to d bones.
“HEADLINES: The son of d Deputy Governor, Olatunji James,
Mr. Badmus seemed to receive d news with mixed feelings. He
still could not place d fact that someone he had seen d previous day & spoken to merely hours ago is dead. He
suddenly became scared of his
environment & he looked around to be sure he was alone.
He stared at the Tv again and
asked no one in particular, “who
could have done this?” he
thought about belina but knew
that no matter how stubborn she
is, she could never attempt
something like that. Though he
was distraught about the fact that his only source of making wealth had been cut off completely, he still had a cause to smile.
