DIARY OF A COLLEGE GIRL:
A TOUCH OF LOVE
EPISODE 2
The receptionist turned over to us and smiled.
“Guys, meet Kwasi. He’s our CEO’s son and this is his second attachment over here. He’s studying Building Technology in KNUST, and he’s also top of his class” she said with a smile.
Kwasi playfully nudged her.
“Awuraesi the smooth talker,” he said.
His voice, without the yelling, playful cadence, sounded like magic. It was a Ghanaian accent with a tiny slur. He pronounced the words with finesse and it sounded like music to my ears.
My guard went up immediately!
I began to fear Kwasi.
I knew that with how he made me take a second look at him, it was possible to start catching feelings for him. My first love experience was quite unpleasant and I had placed an embargo on myself not to date until I was in my third year. I hadn’t even begun my second year yet.
“God please,” I silently prayed. “Please steady my heart…”
He joined us and stood between Fala and me.
“Alright, guys!” the receptionist said. “Now that I’ve introduced Kwasi, can the rest of us introduce ourselves? I’ll start. My name is Awuraesi Tyson. I work here as the receptionist and assistant administrator. I’d like to know your name, school, and programme you’re studying. “
“And your grabbing status!” Kwasi called out from next to me.
I glared at him with the most disgusted look I could muster while the rest just laughed and chuckled.
I was next to Kwasi and Fala was last in the row to the left. The introductions started from the right.
The guy spoke up.
“My name is Standhope, but everyone just calls me Stan.”
“Or Stand!” Kwasi called out in the playful voice again.
This time, everyone giggled including me, but Awuraesi’s smile quickly faded and she looked at him sternly.
“Kwasi…” she began.
“Yes please, yes please…” he said, raising his hands in resignation.
“I’m studying Architecture at the University of Ghana,” Stan concluded.
The next was a lady. She spoke in a high-pitched, almost annoying voice with an air of attitude.
“Hello everyone and good morning. I go by the name Juanita, but everyone just calls be Juan. You’re free to call me either but I won’t respond to any crude twists of my name. It’s Juanita or Juan. That’s it. I study social science at the University of Development Studies and I happen to be in my third year.”
The silence was broken by a stifled laugh.
Fala turned to me and smiled as Awuraesi said, “Well, Juan or Juanita, nice meeting you.”
It was my turn now. “My name is Prin…. my name is Cherie Agyapong.” Awuraesi looked at me quizzically.
“I’m studying Sociology at KNUST.”
“Alright, Cherie, nice meeting you,” Awurasi said.
Next was Kwasi but since he had already been introduced, Fala introduced herself.
“My name is Akorfala-Efadzinam, but everyone just calls me Fala. I’m a Civil Engineering student at Ashesi university.”
Her voice was calm and commanded respect.
Kwasi whistled under his breath, and Awuraesi spoke.
“Happy meeting you beautiful ladies and gentlemen, let’s proceed with our familiarisation tour.”
By noon, we had been split into two groups. Kwasi, Juan and I in one, to work at the main administration. Fala and Stan were taken to the construction wing. I was a bit sad to be estranged from Fala, but I wasn’t there to make friends.
Our roles were outlined to us and by three o’clock in the afternoon, we were asked to close and report to work the next day.
I wanted to call My Alloy immediately and then remembered what he had told me earlier.
I was exhausted and was upset at my mother for not allowing me to be a Princess even on day one.
A voice interrupted my thoughts.
“Cherie?”
I looked up.
It was Kwasi.
“How are you getting home?” he asked.
“Umm, I’m not too sure. I need to get to the Madina bus station.”
He smiled and said, “Dadaba. Where exactly do you live?”
“I live in Teshie,” I replied.
“Oh okay. I’m heading to Nungua so I could drop you there. You could continue from there, right?” he offered.
“Oh wow! Thank you!” I exclaimed.
“Car’s right this way,” he continued.
I walked with him to a very sleek Toyota Corolla. In the front seat, Juan was seated and adjusting her l¡pstick. I looked at Kwasi questioningly and he told me Juan would drop off at The Palace Mall on the Spintex road and continue from there to Manet Cottage where she lived.
I got in the car, and Kwasi did too.
Juan closed her mirror and started playing on her phone. So did I. The silence in the car was a bit tense. Thankfully, Kwasi began to play some music as he drove at top speed.
Juan finally broke the silence.
“So Kwasi, how does it feel working in your own father’s company?”
He reached out and turned a dial to silence the radio.
“Well,” he began. “It may seem easy or may appear as though I’m a dadabee because I’m going to inherit a company, but it’s actually a lot of work. You look at how well your parent has done, in terms of building the company and raising a family, you see your father’s sacrifices, the late nights and the early mornings, and you know you have great expectations to live up to.”
He paused, still with his eyes on the road and smiled.
“It’s really scary,” he concluded.
I couldn’t stop staring at him through the rearview mirror, and after a few minutes, our eyes met, and he stared right back.
I chuckled shyly and said, “Wow, that was really profound Kwasi.”
“Yeah,” Juan affirmed and placed a hand over his which was on the gear lever.
I saw the look in her eyes as she looked at him and suddenly wanted to slap her hand off his. The realization made me gasp.
They both looked back immediately.
“Are you okay?” he asked tenderly, looking me straight in the eyes.
If there was such a thing as blushing in Africans, I would have been red in the face.
What was this?
I was flustered. Why was he having this effect on me?
“Ummm Cher?” his voice called out.
“Yeah. Yeah… ha-ha. I forgot to call my mum… something I needed to discuss with her. I’ll send her a text.” I replied.
“Oh okay,” he said.
His hands went back to the gear lever and Juan placed her hand back on his.
The rest of the ride remained silent till we got to the Palace Mall where we dropped Juan who had already called an uber.
We waited for her to switch rides and when we were alone, Akwasi spoke.
“Cher, could you please move to the front seat? I’m not your uber driver.”
I chuckled and alighted and sat next to him, strapped on my seatbelt and said in a playful voice, “Alright! We’re ready to go, go, go, and gooooo!”
He turned and stared at me, his gaze so intense, it felt like it was penetrating through my thoughts. The playful smile on my face slowly dimmed and I stared right back into his eyes.
“Why are you staring at me?” I asked.
“About Juan… I didn’t ask her to come with me. She was the one who requested for the ride,” he said.
I stared at him puzzled.
“Okaaayyyy… and so?” I asked.
He smiled and shook his head.
I had never seen a smile so beautiful. It transformed him into a very handsome man and all of a sudden, I wanted him to take my hand in his. As if reading my thoughts, he grabbed my hands with both of his, held them in place and said, “Shall we?”
I pulled my hands out of his, still flustered and said “Yes please.”
A smile was playing at the corners of his l-ips as he turned the key in the
ignition and we zoomed off.
