(Silver lining)
She heard water running and she thought Eve was bathing,but she heard her gro-n as if she was in pain,then she pushed the door open.
What she saw frightened her.
A knife was on the floor and almost everywhere was smeared with the red liquid,and a large trail of it led to the bathroom.
The door of the bathroom was slightly ajar,so she took a peek into it, hoping to see Eve in it but what she saw made her pull back instantly.
Regaining her composure,Rose switched off the tap and ran out of the room,on her way down the stairs she met Hale who just got back.
“Who are you and what happened here?” He questioned, wakening from the shock of all the mess he’d seen earlier.
“Please help!!” She gibbered,tears streaming down her face.
“What happened?” Hale asked hastily..
“Eve”…
She tried to explain but was not making sense so he decided to go to Eve’s room,to see for himself.
Getting into the room,he almost slipped in his haste to reach the over filled bathtub,the glass door of the bathroom was stained with blood and Eve could hærdly breathe.
He carried her out of the bathtub and she weakly coughed out water. The stab wound on her stomach was bleeding and soon, Hale’s cloth was w-t with blood and water.
With Rose help,they rushed her to the hospital and straight into the
ICU (intensive care unit.)
“What happened to her?” Hale slammed his fist against the wall of the hospital lobby. Rose sat on one of the chairs with her face buried in her hands,she was crying.
“I don’t know..” she looked up at him and her tears doubled over.
“What do you mean by that?” Hale glared at the black feminine figure before him and huffed amid running his fingers through his sleek black hair.
“I don’t know,I was with her earlier.”
She sniffled loudly.
“So what happened?” He snapped but she didn’t flinch.
“Nothing,I left to see a friend..” her
voice quivered and she wh¡pped her head defiantly.
“Then why did I meet you at home, when she was almost dying?” Hale retorted cutting her off,what she was saying didn’t make sense to him,the hospital intercom calling out code didn’t make sense either, everything didn’t make any sense all he wanted now was to know that Eve and the baby was safe.
“I forgot my phone,so I went back for it..” she said, sincerely.
“Oh….” He said skeptically but she didn’t notice..
Who is this lady?
And why was she at the crime scene?
Hale gave her a stern look and she looked away,then as if on a second thought turned sharply to face him.
“Yes and I didn’t even get it,I still have it at your place. You can check it later..” Rose said airily grazing her knees.
“Pathetic…” He narrowed his eyes at her and pinched his bridge.
“Wait,I hope you’re not saying that I had something to do with what happened to her..?” She asked as realization hit her.
“You’ve said all that is to be said..”
He murmured airily..
“I will never hurt Eve,why would I want to do a thing like that to her.?”
Her sobs came up again.
“And what are you to her,a black sister? mother or daughter?” He asked with a brow raised.
“A friend…”
“From what planet?”
What if she is right? Hale thought staring at her through the corner of his eyes.
What if it was Ashley Ash-what?
No,she dare not do a thing like that but what if she is the murderess?
What if she did this to him?
That will be two bodies in the hospital, he’ll deal with her and that was sure..
“Bitch..” he cursed under his breath as if in a conversation with her.
“Seriously?” Rose narrowed her teary eyes at him. ” I’m surprised you don’t know me,well I’m…”
“Forget it…” He cut her off as he notice two doctors walking swiftly down the lobby,towards them.
Rose jump up,on noticing them. She wiped her tears with the back of her hand and watch as Hale met the men.
“How is she,will she be alright, how is the baby?” He asked referring to the man in white,while staring at the other man.
“Both mother and child are stable….”He replied, then turning to the other man,he said.” It’s a red blanket case,I need an ECG,stat”
“On it..”the man replied and walked away.
“Doctor can I see her now?” Hale quiped, alarmed.
“Why don’t I talk to you first?” The Doctor’s voice was duteous this time.
“Is anything wrong,did she loose the pregnancy,did anything happen to my baby?” Hale asked,panic creaping into him for the first time.
“Uhm can I see you in my office?”
He replied and they all followed him.
“Please be seated…” The Doctor offered waving them to the plush seat amid plunging into the swirl chair behind his desk.
They sat and Rose looked up at the Doctor,panic rising up in her very own body and for the first time she felt really scared.
“Doctor is anything wrong with my friend?,what happened to her?,what happened to the baby?”
Rose voice cracked.
“Calm down Ma’am, she’s alright now. Good thing you brought her on time,she almost lost the pregnancy but we didn’t because the stab caught the wrong s₱0t and not her uterus..”
“Thank God…” Hale heaved and Rose threw her arms in the air as a gesticulation to the word.
“So what about the stab,is she still bleeding.?” He asked glancing at the Doctor’s name plate,it read Rivers.
“No it’s been stitched…” Doctor Rivers replied drumming his fingers on the desk.
“Okay…”Hale smiled at him.
“But…” He stopped and frowned at the both of them.
“But what?” Hale quiped hastily.
The Doctor went on.”You see,she lost a lot of blood and will need some donation..”
“Let me be the donor,I have a lot of blood to give to her..” Rose offered.
“Why would you do that?” Hale questioned, giving her a clinical look.
“She’s my friend,so I’m trying to help. Besides we all have red blood or don’t we.?” Rose pointed out,navigating her brows at him.
“We do,but not to worry I’ll give the blood.” Hale contoured.
“Okay,why don’t we do it now..?” She moved her brows to the Doctor.
“We need to know if it matches hers…” He replied in earnest.
“You’ll carry out a test?”. Hale tapped on the desk.
“Yes,you’ll have to follow me to the ICU lab…” He stated and got up, Hale did same too.
“Okay I’ll do just that…” He replied and followed the Doctor out of the office while Rose watched with her elbows probed on the desk,her chin resting in her palms.
Her forehead narrowed and her l-ips pouted as phase of today’s happening clouded her brain.
Who did that to Eve?
Who’ll do such a cruel thing as to stab a pregnant woman? She broaded.
Who did she hurt and what secret is she really hiding from her?
What has Philip been doing to her?
Why can’t she come out of her shell?.
“Something must be wrong somewhere..” she concluded, something must be up between the couple even though Hale looked cool,he didn’t look that welcoming.
And Eve doesn’t look happy in ther marriage but she wouldn’t share her problems.
Why can’t she understand any of them? She thought rolling her eyes round and round.
She wished everything could go to normalcy..
Hale returned to the office few minutes later with a cotton wool pressed against the lower area of his elbow,where the blood had been drawned from.
“How did it go?” Rose asked getting up on seeing him.
“It went well, though it hurts a little..” He frowned.
“Sorry did it match.?” Rose said as he pressed his fingers on the desk.
“What.?” He turned to her and wriggled his brows.
“The blood,did it match with hers?”
“Yes it’s been donated and she should be at rest right now.”
“That’s good to……” Rose trailed as the door creaked open.
The door opened slowly and the doctor walked in…
“That’ll be all for now…” Doctor Rivers said smiling cheekily.
“Can we see her now?” Rose asked hastily.
“Yes, ward 4a. The lady is free to see her..” turning to hale,he said. ” I’ll like to have another word with you alone..”
“Okay thank you…” Rose said as she walk out of the office.
“Oh dearie..” she muttered walking into Eve’s ward, Eve was lying on the hospital bed sobbing slowly.
“Rose…” She called weakly as she sat besides her.
“Yes love, I’m sorry for leaving you..” she touched Eve’s cheek and wiped off her tears with the back of her hand.
“No,it wasn’t your fault.. don’t apologise..” Eve smiled sadly..
“Who did this to you?” Rose asked in an unfeigned pathetic voice.
“Ashley was the only one at home but I don’t want to believe that she did this to me….” Eve stopped as Rose gave her a confused look.
“What’s that look?” She questioned, flustered.
“Nothing,Can I ask you a question.?” She queried, patting Eve on her head.
“Yes go on..” she muttered with a gesture.
“Who is Ashley.?” Rose asked and she gasped.
“Uhm, Ashley..” she gulped. “How did you know about her?”
“You told me..” she smiled.
“Did I?”Eve asked and was surprised that she didn’t notice.
“Yes,trust me. You tell me things even when I don’t ask.. so go ahead and tell me everything..” Rose cajoled.
There’s no need to hide anything… Eve thought,fresh tears streaming down her cheeks.
Even if she does hide something, Rose will still find out one day. So she better tell her about it maybe she might be of help.
“Please tell me, nothing but the truth. No more lies.” Rose probed tucking some strands of Eve’s loose hair behind an ear.
How sweet?.. Eve forced a smile.
Painfully,she began to narrate the incident from the night she met Hale to the time she got stabbed,and tears of anguish flowed freely from her eyes.
“Oh my God, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I didn’t know you’ve gone through so much..” Rose said staring at Eve with what? _ with pity.
“It’s alright..”
Eve’s face had turned wry like an expectant mother.
“It’s not alright,I hate a man that hits a woman but that’s not the case. Did you say another woman is living with him?” Rose asked,dazed.
“You heard me right,I passed through a lot in that house. ”
“I knew it,I knew that you were keeping something from me..”
Rose still had that dazed look on her face.
“Some things have to be left untold”
She wh¡pped her tears with her hand.
“So you rather die in silence, because of a little mistake,than to open up and seek for help. You amaze me..” she still looked dazed,but a little bit.
“Okay I just told you about that,so can you please advise me and don’t try to judge me..?”
Was she judging her? Maybe she was.
“Did she do that to you,I mean this Ashley?” Rose asked ignoring her statement.
“I don’t know..” Eve wriggled her head and let the tears flow again.
“What do you mean by that?” Rose queried her crying friend.
“I couldn’t see the face, I …..” She trailed.
“I’m scared Rose, I’m scared. What if it comes back..”she murmured, panic creaping into her.
“Shhhhhh….. It’s alright..” Rose shued, holding Eve’s frail frame to her bossom. “You don’t have to panic, we’ll work this out. We’re in this together.”
Rose unclasped her from her bossom and wiped her tears. Eve didn’t realize she was crying again.
“About this Ashley,how has it been with her.?”
“Never easy,she hates me so much but all I’ve tried to do is to be nice even when I don’t have to.”
“Nice does nothing for people in town,you got to be tough.” She took Eve’s hand.
“Tough? But how..?”
“It’s as easy as ABC 123 you just got to be strong,you don’t have to be a weakling always. Don’t give up on yourself like that,she shouldn’t always see your pains, that’s not good at all.” Rose advised squeezing her hand gently.
“Then find me a job..” Eve countered.
Going out will sure help… She thought with a dour smile.
“What.?
“Find me a job..”
“But you’re not strong for that.”
“I know but I need a job,I can’t do this anymore. I need something to keep me busy,that way I can get to avoid some certain things.”
“Okay I’ll see my uncle about that,he just came back yesterday. I’ll tell him everything. I’m sure he’ll find you a place in his firm.”
Did she just say that?
“Are you sure he will agree to that?”
Eve quiped,elated.
“Of course he will.”
“Like are you really serious?”
“Yes,why are we friends?I’ll take you to my uncle,he is going to help you. He’s a good Man.”
“Oh my!” A genuine smile played across Eve’s face and Rose smiled back as she noticed it.
“I’m so sorry for everything, my dear ..” she took her hand and placed a gentle k-ss there.
“It’s alright,what will I do without you?.”
“No, don’t say anything further,you’re such a wonderful friend and it’s my pleasure to help you..”
“Thank you,can I hug you?” Eve raised her brows.
“Do you have to ask? Rose Chuckled. ” Oh dearie..” she leaned into Eve’s warm hug.
“Ouch…” Eve winced as a little pain shot through her body due to the embrace.
Alarmed,Rose quickly unembraced from her.
“Respect the stab…” She said and Eve let out a laughter to console herself but her laughter was cut short when the door opened.
“Hale…” She called as he walked in, through the door.
“Yea..” he replied airily, walking up to her.
“Why are you here,you should be with her.?”she questioned and he stopped by his track.
Rose gulped as she watched them,while fondling with Eve’s hair.
“Be with who,what are you talking about, what’s wrong with you. You’re in the hospital and you want me to be with Ashley ?” He queried, nonchalantly.
“Nice you understood me,even when I didn’t mention her name. Sweet love.”
“It’s instinct, don’t try to attach it to anything. How are you?” He drew close to her and stopped by the bed.
She turned away and faced the wall.”I don’t want you here.”
“Eve..” He made to touch her hair but she moved her head.
“I said go away,I don’t want to see you.” She yelled trying to get up but Rose held her down..
“Stay still, you’re going to hurt yourself..” she cautioned.
“I don’t care,I want him out of here..”
She yelled.
“I’m just trying to care.” He explained in an unfeigned pathetic voice.
“Well I don’t care,my friend here will care for me. Go away!!” She cried hysterically.
“You’ll rather stay with this black..?”
He frowned, Rose touched her finger over her forehead and looked up,then looked down
at Eve again.
“Yes, she is black but she is nothing like you..” Eve stated in a venom laced voice.
“Did Ashley do this to you?” He asked ignoring Eve’s hysteric behavior.
“I said go away,I don’t want to see you.!!”
The lady meant deal and he knew it but what was happening to her?
“Eve…” Rose called trying to calm her down.
“Don’t Eve me, let him go away I don’t want to talk to him. Hale go to your fiancee and leave me alone.” She mo-ned, avoiding his dilating pupils.
Hale just kept looking from face to face. Too stunned to speak.
“Eve you need to calm down..” Rose said soothingly.
“I will not calm down until he leaves.”
She made a racket which invited the Doctor to the ward.
“What is it?” Doctor Rivers asked as he ran into the ward.
“I don’t want to see him,I don’t want to see him..” she yelled pointing at Hale with her index finger ,but he didn’t move as he stood transfixed with shock.
Reluctantly Doctor Rivers turned to Hale..” Sir…..”
“It’s fine… I’ll just leave..” he snapped out of his trance, cutting him off.
