(Tit for tat)
“Eve..” Hale called trying to calm her down but that didn’t help.
“Get out!!”.. she thundered and he huffed.
Why would she raise her voice on him? Besides he was just being nice, at least he was making an effort.
“And this is how you speak to me now. With no respect?” He queried the woman who frowned.
“Respect! Is that all that matters? What about love? I’ve always wanted to be close to you,to know you better but instead you treat me like a f-cken slave,and now you talk about respect. Well no that sh¡p sailed a long time ago,if you must know I don’t respect you. I don’t respect what you did to me, I don’t respect how you let your fiancee disrespect me, I don’t respect all the pains I’ve suffered in your hands,I don’t respect my reasons for being here. Now I want to be on my own and……….” She trailed as tears streamed down her cheeks.
He felt speechless but he couldn’t let her cry on her own,so he tried to hold her to himself,in order to comfort her but she wh¡p off his hand.
“Don’t touch me.!” Eve barked amid sobs.
“Eve please let’s not talk this way..”he pleaded.
“Get away from me!” She snapped.
Hale shut his eyes tightly,and in that moment despised her.
“I Know I caused you so much pain,and it’ll kill me for the rest of my life if I don’t apologise, that’s why I’m trying to make things right.”
“Leave things the way they are.” Eve boomed.
“No,we really need to work things out. You’re my wife” he insisted.
“I’m not your wife”she countered thr-sting her hands in the air.
“You’re my wife. You listen to your husband!”he shouted.
“Don’t you dare shout at me!”
He stared at her,too shocked to speak. Never before had he seen his wife behave so disrespectful.
What was happening to her?.
“I tried as much as I could to respect you ,but you and your fiance treated me like a slave. So now I refuse to do that anymore,so do the right thing and if you don’t do the right thing then forget about your child..”
She backed away from him and faced the wall..
Hale fumbled for words but found himself staring at her,so wordlessly he got up and left the ward,pacing up and down the door listening to her sobs and wondering what to do next.
Rose walked up to him,she was standing by the hallway but went to him when the door open..” how did it go?”she asked as Hale lean over the wall,with his head buried in his elbow.
“She refused to talk to me…” He said crosly not even lifting his head,let alone glance at her.
“You hurt her so much” Rose admonished.
“I know and that’s why I’m trying to fix up everything. Why can’t she give me a chance to prove myself..”
He whinned with his head still down.
“It’s never easy,this things take a long time..”Rose said,arms crossed.
“She’s telling me to do the right thing but she can’t give me a chance to do it.”
“Have she stopped you from sending her out..?” Rose questioned and he looked up at her.
“Who?” He asked airily,not trying to process her voice.
“Your fiancee,the one who is living with you?” She gulped.
“Ashley is no more with me.” He expounded and she scoffed.
“Why?”Rose asked carefully.
“She has been hospitalized here,she is in coma..”
He was expecting a silly reply like”good for her” but instead , Rose frowned. ” What happened?”
“We had a little fight and…”
“I’m sure you maimed her, maiming that’s what you’re good at.” Rose interrupted,then gulped as she realized she shouldn’t have said that but it was too late.
“No,why would you even say such,is that what she tells you?”
“She didn’t have to. I could see for myself.”
“I Know I’m a terrible person but you don’t have any right to judge me.”
Was she judging him?
“I think you need to see a therapist..” Rose insisted. “You’re suffering from depression.”
“I’m perfectly fine!!” He snapped, slamming his fist on the wall.
What right did she have to say such things to him?
Still, Rose persisted.” You’re depressed and you need to
do something about____”
“Don’t tell me what to do,you hærdly know me..”
What was he to do?
Leave Eve here abd continue being neglected?.
Or take her home where she’d not have a say over him?.
“You’re not my problem,I’m just worried about the pregnancy,it can come in between all this. I won’t want her to loose it or raise a child without a father.” She place a hand on his shoulder.” You could see my therapist..”
“I should do what?” He turned to her.
“You could see my therapist..” she repeated.
“You have a therapist?for what,what do you need one for?”
“Do you think it’s easy being in a relationsh¡p with someone whose mother is a racists..”
“That’s bad..”
She sighed..”Well it doesn’t matter why I see a therapist,the fact is I do and it helps me a lot. So I think you should also see her one of..”
Rose trailed as he rake his hair and open the door.
Eve had stop crying but she was still lying on the bed and facing the wall, but quickly sat up as she heard the door creak open.
Hale stormed into the room with Rose following behind him.
“Eve you’re coming with me..”
He knew that wasn’t the best idea but that was the only thing he could think of.
“But she’s not fit to leave..” Rose quiped, alarmed.
“Stay away from this.” He warned,then turned his attention back to Eve. “You are coming with me.”
“To where?” She raised an eyebrow.
“We’re going home,get up…” Hale tugged on her air and she shrugged.
“Why would I follow you home?”
“Because you’re my wife..”
“Well as you can see I’m not yet discharged.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll see the Doctor about that. I’ll also get a nurse to take care of you till you’re perfectly fine.”Hale said taking Eve’s hand gentily but with a finality.
“I’m not going anywhere!” She frowned.
“It’s an order not a plea..” he seethed.
“So?” She chided.
“So you won’t like what I’ll do if you don’t come with me,as well anyone who tries to stop you from coming with me.” He said threateningly but Eve was still persistent.
“I’m not going with you…” She persisted stubbornly.
“Eve..”Rose called as he gave her a threatening gesture.
“Fine…” She thr-st her hands in the air. “But I’m riding with Rose..”
“If you wish,but I give you just an hour to get home.” He stated and walked out of the ward, slamming the door noisily behind him.
“Oh boy…” Rose muttered sitting besides Eve.
“I didn’t think this will turn out to be like this.” Eve frowned.
“So are you scared now?”Rose gave her a sideways glance.
“I’m not,but what if he tries to punish me or force himself on me,just to get back at me?” Eve asked still frowning.
“Then you report to the cops and get a restriction from them.” She advised.
“Do you think that will work?”
“Yeah besides I don’t think he’ll want to force himself on you..”
“You don’t know him the way I do..”
“He won’t do anything like that,he needs you..”
“Yeah to do the chores as the slave that he sees me as..”
“No as his wife. I think he has a little thing for you now.”
Rose said to Eve who scoffed.
“How did you know..?” She asked skeptically.
“I see it in his eyes..”
“I’ve never notice..”
“You’d be dead not to notice the gleam in his eyes anytime he sees you. I think he loves you..”
“No you’re mistaken, there’s no way he can feel something for me.”
“You can’t judge the heart”
“Maybe I can Judge the body,that man tried to maim me. Not once,not twice,not thrice. Infact I’ve lost count of how many times he raise his hands on me. we can never match..”
“Never say never, remember you’re carrying his child..”
“It’s a love child..”
“How can it be a love child when you’re his wife?”
“I’m not his wife,and as soon as I get a Job and make enough money. I’ll get myself out of this mistake a bottle of vodka got me into..”
“He loves you..”
“Too bad I’m not available so I don’t care about how he feels,what I know is that I’ll make him pay for every single thing he did to me. He made a huge mistake of getting me discharged cause I’ll make him suffer the same fate I suffered in his hands,and that crazy fiance of hers is not left out..”
“Ashley has been hospitalized, she’s in coma..”
“Oh..”
“Yes and we don’t know if she’ll be out of it..”
“Well she can be in coma for eternity but when once she comes out of it, she’ll have me to answer to.”
“I’m happy you can stand up for yourself,quiet impressive..”
“I’ve been too weak,this is the result. The pregnancy is a result,the scar in my heart is a result and the one in my stomach is another result. So I think it’s time I stand up for myself..”
Rose place a hand on Eve’s hand which was on her lap.
“You need to take everything easy.”she advised soothingly.
“I’m trying but it’s so hærd..”
“It’s alright, everything will be okay and about that work stuff I had a word with my uncle he said you can come with your rèsumé..”
“Okay thank you very much Rose..”
“It’s alright, I’m glad to help..”
“So when will I start?”
“When you’re fit..”
“Okay I’ll start tomorrow.”
“But you’re not too strong for that..”
“Don’t worry I’m fine, I’m okay..”
“Fine I’ll take you there tomorrow..”
“Thank you once again..”
“Oh come on girlfriend it’s nothing..
”
“So can we go now?”
“Of course yes, I’ll drive you home.”

When they got home Hale was playing music at a deafening volume.
“What on Christ name is wrong with you?” Eve yelled turning it off.
Hale was sitting on one of the sofas, operating his smart phone.
“Welcome back..” He got up and made to hug her but she stepped back.
“Thank you…” She replied airily, plunging into a sofa with Rose.
“I got the nurse, she’ll be coming here tomorrow” Hale said smiling as Eve forced a smile.
“Okay…”she replied airily, trusting a pillow below her arm and that was when she noticed the bruise on his forehead.
“What happened?..” she asked, squinting a little.
“Just a little bump,I left the bathtub and must have tripped on the w-t tiles. But it’s nothing..” He gave a dimpled smile.
Eve glanced at Rose and murmured something indifferently.
“Rose, anything to drink?” Eve asked suddenly.
“No, I’m fine…” Rose replied..
“You look like you could use a drink.” She cajoled with a nudge.
“Alright..”. Rose gave in..
Eve gave a mischievous smile and turned to Hale.. “uhm could you please help me get her something to drink?”
“But…”
“It’s okay, I’ll just get it…” Eve cut Hale’s reluctant voice off and made to get up..
“No,no,no I’ll get it..” he said hastily and she stopped in mid air.
“You will?” She asked nonchalantly.
“Sit back, you’re not strong I’ll go get her something to drink.” He dropped his phone and turn his attention to Rose as Eve plunged back in her seat.”what can I get you?”
“Anything but nothing alchoholic..”
Eventually he stood up and went to the wine bar.
“You shouldn’t have done that” Rose whispered to Eve who shrugged.
“Done what?” Eve asked still shrugging.
“Told him to get me drink,you know I don’t want it..” she chided.
“I Know what I’m doing..” Eve shook her hair out of it’s loose bun and waved a finger at Rose’s face.
“What are you doing?,tell me..”Rose brought her fingers to her temple.
Eve wanted to say something but went mute as she saw Hale return with a glass of wine.
“This is so good of you, thank you very much..” Rose acknowledged as he handed the glass over to her.
“You’re welcome..” he smiled sitting on the exact seat he got up from.
“Is there any food in this house.?” Eve asked arching her back.
“Why? Are you hungry?” He questioned, concerned.
“Yes..” she said as a throw away.
“But we ate earlier.” Rose quiped,not taking a drink from her glass.
“Well, I’m hungry…” Eve countered.
“There’s no food,you didn’t cook.” Hale pointed out, returning his attention to his phone.
Rose furrowed her brows. “There’s lasagna in the car, should I get..”
“No that’s not what I want..” she interrupted.
“What do you want to eat.?” Hale asked glancing at her.
“Chicken and waffles..”
Her voice was hysteric this time.
He got up..”I’ll give you some money to prepare it then.”
“Are you serious?, can’t you see I’m not strong for that?” She shouted hoarsely.
“So what should I do?” He said, watching as she raised her hands above her head in a gesture of despair.
“Prepare it yourself.” Eve suggested, Rose wanted to object but Eve signalled her to stay out of it.
“What?” He struggled not to raise his voice against hers. The nagging was like a scene in television. Why couldn’t they just have calmed,reasoned discussion.
“I want you to prepare it..” she repeated.
“But I can’t do that..” he sighed, thinking that she would soon start crying to make him feel guilty.
“Learn!” She yelled, grazing her knees.
“Eve please….” He made to go close to her but she signal him not to.
“If you can’t give me what I want then stay away from me!” She stood up and shashayed out of the room.
