“Philip……”
She called,her l-ips quivering but he ignored her and deepened his fingers in her wa-ist then leaned into her.
Eve’s wh0le body trembled in fear of what he might do to her..
She’s never seen him before in a mood like this..
What was happening to him?
What was going on in his head?
She wished she could read his mind but that seemed impossible as she couldn’t even meet his gaze.
“You hurt me pretty bad…”
He mumbled,his hot breath hitting against her nape.
“I’m so sorry,I hope you can forgive me…” Those were the only words she could utter before gripping tight to the wash basin as he moved his hands to her shoulders.
Goosebumps rose on the surface of her skin and she shivered in his arms.
He jerked down an arm of her jumpsuit and exhaled on her bare skin.
“I forgive you…”He started and stopped,then hastened to add.”But..”
“But what?” She asked jerkily, lowering her head..
He pressed his fingers on her shoulders. “I can’t marry you..” he whispered and heard her wince.
Eve’s eyes w¡dened in horror, instantly she opened her mouth and turned to say something but couldn’t utter a word. So they both stared awkwardly at each other, suddenly Philip phone began to ring, cutting off the stare abruptly he brought it out and glanced at the bright screen,then walked away.
“It’s over right?” She asked and he stopped by the door. Stared at her,his l-ips read – I’m not done with you- then he walked out of the bathroom without saying a word to her.
“Wait…..” She called out placing an arm akimbo amid stretching out her free arm as if to reach out to him simultaneously taking few steps towards the door,but he didn’t stop so she stopped at her track and then she heard the sound of the door being shut but for a long time she kept staring at the door in total disbelief.
It was either her brain refused to send signals to the muscles,or the muscles refused to obey any of such signals.
She stood ingrained to that one s₱0t for what seemed like ages before something snapped again,and like a robot now attuned to power surge,she jumped away from the s₱0t at once and hurried out of the bathroom then into the room,and bumped on the door before realizing that it was not open. In a swift moment prissed it open and jumped out of the room in a hurry..
Where is he?
Eve panicked as she hurried down the hallway,she made out of the hallway and into the party hall and searched for him but luck seemed to be far from her,he was no where to be found.
She walked out of the building and met him going into his car but when she made to call out to him he was gone and only the screech of the car tires met her eyes..
“Philip!!” She yelled, slipping down the gate and sitting on the floor. Burrying her head in her thighs,she began to sob slowly for a while but quickly lift her head as she felt a hand on her shoulder.
Eve sniffled as she look up to find her friend standing in front of her..
“Girlfriend what are you doing here,I thought you two worked things out. Where’s Philip?” Rilly asked in an unfeign pathetic voice.
“I tried…”she whimpered.
“You tried?,what happened?.” She replied hastily.
“He left me..”. Eve crooked.
“God, this is terrible” Rilly mo-ned pressing her fingers against her forehead as if trying to remember something.
“I didn’t wish for this to happen”she stated.
“It’s alright,get up” Rilly gesticulated.
“No I won’t get up, I’ll wait for him..” Eve shrugged, wiping her tears with the back of her hand.
“Philip isn’t coming back,if he’s made it clear that he doesn’t want you again,then he’s gone for good.”
Rilly explained and she winced but didn’t budge..
“You can’t be serious Rilly, Philip can’t do this to me. He can’t ditch me.” Eve crooked, flaunting her head slowly.
“But you’re the one who said he left you.” Rilly pointed leaning on the gate.
“Yes but I know he’ll be back,so let me wait for him. I’ll wait for him, he’ll come back and take me home..” she said hysterically, Rilly frowned and leaned away from the gate.
“Come on babe. Stop this madness and get up, people will snigger,if they see you like this..” she said lowering to help Eve who brushed her away bashfully.
“Let them snigger,I don’t care..” she yelled,arms crossed.
“And I won’t watch you ruin a reputation which is almost down the drain. If they see you like this, questions will arise and they’ll surely get answers. Then you’ll be the subject of ridicule in every home, words travel faster than lightening you know?..” Rilly cajoled Eve but she seemed unbothered,so she went on to add. “By the way your Mom is on her way here” she expounded and Eve’s eyes flashed.
That only meant one thing trouble.
Mom will be mad for sure. She thought.
“What?tell me you’re lying?” She asked scrambling to her feet.
“I’m not lying, she’s been searching everywhere for you. She saw you walk through the gate” She said as Eve dust her clothe,then leaned in and whispered “She heard what happened.”
“Oh God,what should…..”
She trailed as a figure approached from the gate.
Eve tensed and shut her eyes, seeing the middle aged woman didn’t scare her but what scared her was the furious look on her face.
She gripped tight to Rilly as if for support.
“Rilly you’re excused…” The woman spoke up and Rilly shook her head negatively.
“Miss Lucy,I think you should let me explain things..”
“Child you’re excused” She barked and Rilly made into the gate in a swift motion.
“M-other..”
Eve stammered..
“Harlot!!”
Eve lowered her gaze as her mother snapped at her,she knew this was going to happen..
“Wait let me get this straight, Philip caught you in bed with his own brother..”
she took a couple of steps to her, creasing her brows as she continued. “A guy you met just this night,were you out of your mind?”
She added,her voice rising as she stopped in front of her.
“What got into you?” Mrs Winnie queried.
“It was a mistake Mom,I should just leave if you’ll also pass judgement on….”
She was cut off by a resounding slap from her Mom.
“I’m still talking to you sick child,after shaming me in front of his family you dare think of walking out on me?”she scolded Eve who palmed her left cheek, trying to recover from the shock of being slapped by her..
“You’re happy now? He’s left you for his brother,do you think you’ll be happy with him? What other shame are you going to throw on me? Who’s the next person you’ll sleep with,what will I tell your Dad.?”she chidded..
“Mom…” Eve pleaded but her mom was already torqued off.
“What are you going to do on your wedding night? Who will you sleep with this time?tell me?” Her Mom lashed out.
“Mom!”she called,she has had enough but can she stop her mom?.
“Don’t Mom me, what happened to the pious daughter I brought up.?”
“I-I’m sorry…”she mumbled as she noticed the disappointment and surprise mingled look on her mother’s face…
“You’re sorry,is that all you have to say? Is that gonna solve this? you’re such a disgrace.!”
A lie hung on Eve’s toungue,but instead she said..” so you’ll also reproach me as if I’m the worst daughter that has ever crossed the face of the Earth.”
“You’re not my daughter,I didn’t give birth to a wh-re!”
She thundered and backed away,then retreated into the gate leaving a bewildered Eve.
The wh0le Schrecklichkeit made her slip gradually to the edge of hysteria,she didn’t know when she left that s₱0t but soon she was wobbling down the road.
Her forehead was burning and her throat felt patchy,all her body ached and wrinkles of sobs were beginning to form through the corners of her mouth.
She stopped and leaned by the pole of a street lamp as she began to shiver slightly.
“Oh God, please. Let all this be a dream.”
She prayed softly as she became giddy,the air supplies to her lungs seemed to have been cut off.
Wearily,she stretched out her hand for support but none was forthcoming.
The last thing she could remember was seeing a car approaching,she passed out as soon as she hit the floor..

Episode 6
(Married to a Jerk)
The next day,when Eve woke up she found herself in a room surrounded by white. Everything and everyone were in white,it was the emergency ward 1 of St George’s hospital.
“She’s awake..” it was Rilly’s voice. “Thank God girlfriend, you’re in a hospital.”
“Praise God..”her mother said raising both arms classically.
“Happy to see she’s awake..”a masculine voice crooned.
“Girlfriend don’t do this to us again.” Rilly said stroking her head. “Thank God you didn’t stray too far off,we found you unconscious on the streets but you’re safe now..”
Eve stared round all the faces in the room then made a gulping sound as she met Hale’s gaze. She cut off the gaze and searched for Philip but didn’t see him.
Narrowing her eyes slowly,she concentrated on Hale once more and her contenance changed as she painfully recalled the events of last night and tears of anguish filled her eyes but she willed them away. Then she made an audible wince as she saw herself mo-ning the time he had her.
She had been so stupid.. she thought.
Her marriage is just the next day yet she don’t know the man she’s about to be wedded to but she already had carnal knowledge about him.
No doubt he looks like a real gentle man but what if he was really not what she had thought him to be? Suppose, he was one of those monsters who hid their real self under a good facade,one always read about in books, but scarcely met?
What if this marriage was just a contrivance?
Why had she not thought this wh0le thing before letting her emotions lead her? Why…. Why….. why…..why…..why?She became desperate and confused as her thoughts became muddled up. She made another wince,then helped herself to a sitting possition and all the tears of anguish she had been holding,flowed freely down her eyes.
“Why don’t you just calm down and take things easy…?”
Hale crooned wiping her tears with a hankie he pulled out of his pocket.
“What do you mean take things easy?”Eve lashed out at him.
“And why are you talking to him in angry tones.” Her Mom,who has been silent fired and she went mute. “The deed has already been done so all you need to do is quit brooding over this wh0le issue and relax, remember tomorrow is your wedding.” She added in a cool voice.
“It’s okay girlfriend, everything will be alright..”Rilly said perching by the edge of the bed to allay her pains.
“You need to get some rest before being discharged this evening..” her Mom said but she didn’t offer a word for a reply,she only managed a nod and leaned back against the pillow. It was good to be here,away from everybody, without being nagged. She felt safe.
That evening she was discharged.

Back home her father ired. “Depraved fool!.” Mr Hawthorne roared at Eve who shielded behind her Mom,she was feeling much better,until now when her father decided to snatch that moment from her.
“Honey Just relax and let me explain..” Luciana cooed.
Eve knew her father wouldn’t listen.
“What else is there to know?,this wh-re already shamed me in the public, she shouldn’t be here..”he sethed.
Eve winced at her father’s word and clasped to a chair.
“Hawth you cannot treat her like this. She just got out of a hospital bed.” Her mom said on her defence.
“Or maybe it should be you woman,you spoilt her. She has brought shame and disgrace on this family and you still beg for her..”The bulky man said defiantly,his broad chest heaving.
“Do calm down..” Luciana crooned.
“You’re not welcome here..”he said quietly and made to walk away but stopped on his track as his wife clung to him.
“Please forgive her, she’s only but a child..”she pleaded on her behalf.
Eve fell to her knees in front of her father.. “I’m sorry Dad…”
Mr Hawthorne glanced at her and turned to his wife.
“Please…” She pleaded.
“But you know what she did..” he wh¡pped his head up and stared at Eve indignantly.
Eve gulped as she almost suffocated under his glare.
“I know but it’s our duty to shield her from the vicious mass, please she needs us now.. just forgive her..” Luciana insisted.
“She needs us? How about the Man she’s getting married to,where is he?..” his voice had gotten down and Eve was glad, at least her Mom was making an effort.
“He’s shouldering the preparation for the wedding, let’s just give our daughter our blessings. She needs our support.”
“Just because of you…” He said and walked out. Eve took in a deep breath and exhaled softly as her Mom collapsed unto a chair.
“Thanks Mom..” she muttered, running her fingers down her braids amid scrambling to her feet.
“It’s okay.. I’m sorry for being too rude last night,I was just torqued off but now I feel your pains,I understand everything.” Her mom said softly and got up.
“It’s fine,and I’m also sorry Mom, I’m sorry for bringing this to you two..” Eve said and they both embraced theirself briefly and unembraced.
“It’s alright,I’ll go fix something for you,so you’ll eat and get some sleep. you really need it for tomorrow..”
Luciana said flashing Eve a preoccuring smile.
“I’ll help you Mom..” she smiled back. They both sauntered into the kitchen.
✴️ The next day….
” Eve you need to breath. Can you do that for me?”Rilly, her maid of honor asked as she dabbed an hankie on her sweltering face. Only two minutes left before the wedding began,she was really nervous.
“I _ I _ don’t think I can do this.. I don’t think I can go out there…”
She stammered,her l-ips quivering.
“Of course you can. Just breath..” Rilly urged.
“I can’t..” she persisted stubbornly.
“Yes you can, just do as I say. Breath in and out.”Rilly prodded with her brows raised.
“Okay but what about Philip,what if he objects?.” She asked, panic creaping into her.
“He won’t do that, he’s already made it clear that he won’t marry you. Babe you don’t have any other option than to loosen up and do this besides he is not here.” She rolled her eyes.
“How do you he’s not here or are you just saying that to make me feel better?.”Eve said grumpily, twitching her upper lip.
“Come on girlfriend, Philip is out of town..” Rilly expounded and she gasped.
“Philip what?”she asked,her voice betraying her.
“He left this morning, Dad told me..”
“So he left without even saying a goodbye?” Eve said in a strangled voice and Rilly sighed.
“That’s because he doesn’t want to bother you,plus from what I heard it’s an impromptu trip..” Rilly said ruefully.
“He left cause he doesn’t want to see my face, that’s how much he hates me now” Eve murmured,in a pathetic voice.
“Girlfriend..”Rilly pleaded.
“It’s alright, it’s fine I can manage.” Eve said and she touched the doorknob.
“Okay please can you inhale and exhale..” she opened the door..
“O-fcourse..” Eve stammered and took in a deep breath,then exhaled a long one.
“Now go out there. Hale is already waiting at the end of the aisle.” She urged, pushing Eve out of the dressing room.

Cool music filled the perfectly illuminated hall,the orchestras were at it, doing what they knew how to do best.
At each aisle,friends and families were comfortably seated, awaiting the arrival of the bride.
The music stopped and all heads turned to face the far end of the walk, the opening to the bridal chorus started to play.
Then the angelic bride, Eve appeared under the arch, she wore a strapless wedding gown which was encrusted with
pearls and rhinestone.
Her face was concealed with a veil which haboured a crystal head piece. She held a french rose silk bouquet,her Dad held her left arm and smiled at her as he esc-rted her down the aisle which seemed longer than expected.
The guest stared at her,took pictures of her dress,waved and smiled at her in silence but one thing was for sure. Nobody knew if she was really happy or not,why would they when she hid her emotions under a smiling facade?.
Up ahead she saw him, her future husband,the wrong man she was getting married to,the man whose background and lifestyle she knew next to nothing about. He stood taller,his shoulder back and his eyes on her…
At the end of the aisle, Mr Hawthorne hugged her and then presented her to Hale, the groom. Her father placed her hand in Hale’s and smiled. As a couple,the two stood in front of the priest.
Before Mr Hawthorne walked away,he patted Hale on the shoulder,that was his way of welcoming him to the family.
The music faded and the service started in full, wedding speeches were given and the priest led them through their vows.
“Do you both pledge to share your lives openly with one another, and
to speak the truth in love? Do you promise to honor and tenderly
care for one another, cherish and encourage each other, stand
together, through sorrows and joys, hærdsh¡ps and triumphs for all
the days of your lives?” The priest had asked.
“We do..”Eve and Hale replied in unision, their eyes locked on each other’s face.
“Do you pledge to share your love and the joys of your marriage with
all those around you, so that they may learn from your love and be
encouraged to grow in their own lives?”
“We do.” They chorused,then an adorable little boy dressed in a blue tuxedo walked up to them and handed Hale a ring. A little girl dressed in pink did same to Eve.
The priest went on to bless the ring. “May these rings be blessed as a symbol of your union. As often as either of you look upon these rings, may you not only be reminded of this moment, but also of the vows you have made and the strength of your commitment to each other.Hale, please repeat after me..”
The priest’s voice glide well from the speakers throughout the hall.
“I Hale Patterson, promise to love and support you Eve Hawthorne and live each day with kindness, understanding, truth, humor, and passion. With this ring I wed thee.”
Hale repeated staring at Eve whose eyes were glistening with tears,then slowly he took her hand and placed the ring on her finger.
“Eve, please repeat after me …” He went on again.
“I Eve Hawthorne, promise to love and support you Hale Patterson and live each day with kindness, understanding, truth, humor, and passion. With this ring I wed thee..” He recited and Eve repeated,then took Hale’s hand and placed the ring on his finger..
“Do anyone object to this marriage?” The priest spoke up and all heads turned backward.
Eve tensed and took in a deep breath, praying that no one should get up,she didn’t want to be shamed. She has had enough of that.
“Oh God please..”she said a short prayer and just like a prayer being answered,no one got up,no one raised a hand.
“Speak now or forever hold your peace..” the priest urged but still no one budge.
”
He turned to the couple.” Go now in peace and live in love, sharing the most precious gifts you have,the gifts of your lives united. And may your days be long on this earth.I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may k-ss the bride.”
Hale did so, placing his hands on her shoulders while the crowd cheered.
The priest held up his hands, bringing the crowd to their feets.
The two couples left the belvedere arms linked with identical feigned smiles on their faces.
The best man,maid of honor and the groomsmen and bridesmaids, followed suit. They stopped near the end of the walk and formed the start of a receiving line.
The family and guest filled down, pausing for hugs and k-sses and congratulating the young couple.
Eve then turned around and threw her bouquet of rose silk flowers behind her.
The women collided with each other as they tried to catch it. Then Hale and Eve ran to a stretched limosine which stood alone decked out in ribbons and twisted coils of streamers, it was their wedding car.
As they ran towards the automobile Eve’s long white gown spread out on the ground, so Hale tried not to step on it.
As they reached the decorated limosine which was already opened by the driver,they jumped into it and took their places in the passengers space.
The car took off,in a way that the ribbons and twisted coils of streamers whisked behind them.The wedding had turned out joyful.
“Where are we going to?” Eve asked clearing out pieces of confettis from her hair,amid staring at Hale who brought out his phone and began to operate it.
“Somewhere…” He replied,his eyes rooted on his phone.
“I guess,it has a name..”she murmured, rolling her eyes.
“Yes and you’ll find out when we get there,so quit asking me questions.” He said hoarsely,still not glancing at her.
“I just want to know where we’re going to,is there anything wrong with that.?” Eve questioned.
“You don’t have to know.” He replied in that same hoarse voice.
“Are you for real?,can you please tell me where we’re going to?” She queried again,panick taking over her.
“Why do you keep asking questions?” Hale scowled, staring round the partited glasses on each side of the stretch, which contained different snacks and drinks.
Eve flared. “And why do you keep avoiding answers? Tell me where you’re taking me to…” She stopped and turned to the driver,to bark out an order but scowld as she noticed the partition on the driver space. There’s no way she could talk to him..
How then will she get away from this horrible man,that was glaring at her as if he would enjoy squeezing the life from her body.?
An alarm system was triggered off in her mind. Her wh0le being became aware of an impending danger,but what can she do to help herself?
“Help,help me please. Somebody help…” She yelled hysterically.
“Eve,stop it…”Hale warned but she ignored him and went on with her scre-ms.
What is this bitch up to? He thought glaring at the scre-ming lady.
“Anyone out there… Help me please, somebody help….”
Eve yelled pounding on the dark tinted windows of the stretch.
“Will you stop this madness?” He barked out but the lady was determined.
“Help… somebody He…”
Her shrill scre-m was cut off by a slap from Hale.
“W_What? You slapped me?” Eve stammered, stunned.
“Yes I did and I’ll do it again if you don’t shut the f-ck up bitch! You’re much of a drama queen!” He barked and she gasped.
