Chapter 10
XERIS
There are some times in life that one need to appreciate the situation he or she is. I was complaining about Lyra kicking my eye but then Xerra came and gave me a bleeding one. The bleeding had stopped and luckily, she hit my brow, not my eye. Mine was better than Xeron’s, she caught, tied him down and shaved his hair, the tiny mustache he managed to grow and eyebrows clean. That was the worst way to kill Xeron, his hair was his dignity. He was crying and begging me to help but I had my own problems to deal with.
‘There,’ she shrilled. ‘All shaved.’ She stood up from his back where she sat and kicked his now shiny head. ‘Next time, you won’t try such rubbish again and if you dare tell mom I shaved you, you’ll be losing more than your head. Is that understood?’ She asked sternly. He only wailed as a reply, she grabbed his chin and squeezed it. ‘Is that understood?!!!’
‘Crystal.’ He wailed. I couldn’t help but laugh at the shape of his head, it was hilarious.
‘Be quiet or I’ll come shave yours too or better, report you to mom.’ I covered my mouth quickly, the fear of mom is the beginning of wisdom. ‘Now untie him.’ She commanded, kicked his stomach and walked out majestically. It’s not his fault she’s stronger, she and Xena both had abnormal strength. Xena doesn’t use hers though.
‘Ha ha ha! Look at your Baldhead!’ I laughed, his head was shaped like an upsidedown pear with h0les. ‘Oh my….head shape….’ Xena walked in sadly only to lose her balance at the sight of the pear shaped mirror staring at her.
‘Oh my…..’ She broke into a peal of laughter. ‘Xeron is this your head? What happened to y….Xerra shaved you…no eyebrows….’ She said between her laugh. ‘Oh my God, your little sister beat you up again.’
‘Are you kidding me,’ he sobbed. ‘You call that giant little? Look at my beautiful head, I’m bald.’ He cried. Xena and I spent the rest of the day laughing and mocking him, it was fun.

# LYRA
I eyed Xeris and Xeron from my seat, something didn’t feel right. Xeris wore big shades and a face cap and Xeron wore a baseball helmet over a hood. I could barely see his face.
‘What’s up with them?’ I whispered to Xena. She giggled.
‘Xerra.’
‘What did the little devil do this time?’ I asked already excited to hear what sort of suffering she made Xeron go through. She knows her limit with Xeris.
‘I’ll show you after class, hold on.’ I nodded but curiosity almost ate me up. Everyone went out of class first before she stood up. ‘Observe.’ She walked to him, he was about to stand up when she ripped the helmet off his head and dragged his hood down.
‘What the heck….’ Hilda who was still in murmured. Behold! The shiniest Baldhead on planet earth. I could see myself through the shiny hairless skin of his head. ‘Xeron, who did these to your beautiful hair!’ She exclaimed quizzically, he had no eyebrows too.
‘Ha! Pear head!’ Xeris laughed and that got us laughing seriously. Xeron grumbled, snatched his helmet and stomped out of the class.
‘I have got to have a selfie with that glorious head…’ Hilda said and ran after him. She will surely get the picture.
‘And you, I assume you have a black eye.’
‘You almost made me blind.’
‘You were touching another man’s property, not cool man.’
‘You can’t thank me, you should be glad a guy like me even found your legs attractive. In case you don’t know, you’re goddamn ugly and I rather marry a troll than k-ss your awful l-ips.’ What he said really hurt, a pang of pain hit my chest. I inhaled and smiled.
‘That’s good because you will be the last male on earth that I ever, I mean EVER! Have anything to do with. You’re bad luck, misfortune and a catastrophe to my life, the large black stain I wish to erase from my memory and life. If it was up to me, I would have prayed that you were never born, even Xeron is way better than a dumb childish assh-le like you. F-ck you Xeris, just stop existing and make me the happiest woman on earth,’ I smiled inwardly, the look on his face was hilarious. ‘I’m sorry if what I said hurt you Xena.’ She smiled warmly.
‘It’s okay, the fool deserves it. Let’s go.’ She carried our bags and walked out with me behind. ‘FWIW, what you said back there was a solid burn, cool one.’ I giggled blushingly.
I’m hurt myself.
# TWO_DAYS_LATER
I sat at the backseat of the limo that was driving dad and I to the banquet. I felt really nervous, extremely nervous but what could I do. Dad on the other hand was quiet which was extremely strange, he’s never quiet.
‘Dad, you sure you’re okay?’
‘Yeah, I’m fine.’
‘What’s going on with you? Talk to me, please.’
‘I’ll tell you when we get back home, I promise.’ I nodded and turned my attention to the window, the limo had cross into the Xanders Estate. I exhaled loudly.
I can do this.
Sooner than expected, I was out of the car breathing in the sweet scent of the air. Dad interlocked our arms and walked to the backyard which was extremely large. The place was heaving with people but I noticed only The Xanders and Oceans were present. Wasn’t that sure because I don’t know all of them. I went to greet Aunty Mixzi and Clover first, they were laughing about something although Mixzi looked really pale, sick and worried.
‘Good evening mom.’ I greeted with a perky smile.
‘Lyra! My baby! Look at you, all grown up.’ She squealed enfolding me in a hug. ‘How have you been?’
‘Very fine mom,’ I looked at Clover and smiled brighter. I wasn’t that acquaintance with her. ‘Good evening ma’am.’ She nodded and sipped her drink, she doesn’t talk much just like Tan and her second child, Imogene. The third however, was a talkative. ‘Where’s Dad?’
‘He couldn’t make it, he fell sick.’ I mouthed a “O” that would explain her pale face and slightly puffy eyes.
‘What is this banquet about mom?’
‘To celebrate the long friendsh¡p between the two families and to renew the vow made years ago.’
‘What vow?’
‘You’ll see. Just don’t faint.’ She said humorously, it wasn’t funny to me. I smiled nervously and walked away to find Xena. The way the older people kept staring at me was creeping me out.
I found Tan, where there’s Tan, there’s Xena.
‘Hey guys.’
‘Hey….wow Lyra, you look great!’ She exclaimed eyeing my gold velvet dress.
‘And you’re wearing a ninja suit?’ I asked chucklingly. She wore a gray ninja outfit. She shrugged nonchalantly.
‘I wear whatever I want, no questions asked.’ Tan shook his head chucklingly. ‘Any idea why we are in this boring place?’
‘I was hoping you’d know.’ I sighed. We both looked at Tan.
‘What? I don’t know either but before mom could fly down from Korea, it means it’s a serious one. I don’t have any energy to find out, I’m still solving one right now.’
‘So what now? I have a bad feeling about this party, like it’s because of me.’ I said sadly.
‘I think it’s for Xeris and y….’ Tan started but was cut off by the ear piercing echo of the mike.
‘Sorry,’ that voice. I turned around and looked at the stage set for the occasion, dad’s mom was there looking young as ever with Xena’s grandmother, Luella. ‘Everyone, please pay attention to us.’ Everyone slowly paid attention.
‘First of all, where’s that stupid grandson of mine? Xeris?’ Grandma Lu asked frowningly. Everyone looked around murmuring, even Xeron who stood by a guy that looked like him. ‘Xeris!!!!’
‘Over here sugar burger!’ He shrieked. I trailed his voice to a back balcony in the house. ‘What’s up sugar?’
‘Xeris will you get down here this instance!’ Aunt Mixzi snapped.
‘Coming,’ before I could blink, he threw himself over the balcony and landed in a crouch. How did he jump that! I was still in shock when he ran to Grandma Lu. ‘I’m here, why?’
‘Stand here. Lyra, Lyra please come out.’ I snapped out of the shock and pointed at myself questioningly. ‘Yes, you.’
My heart thumped against my chest, I held the side of my dress as I dragged my feet to them. They were all smiling guiltily, Xeris and I obviously were confuse.
‘Now, most of you know why we are here, few of you don’t so I’ll explain.’ My grandmother, Fiona said calmly. ‘Our two families have been together for over almost two centuries now, always helping each other when needed, sticking together as one. We both share a similar problem, a problem in which we’d seek countless of solution until the final solution was given. A vow that most of us took before the death of the eldest members of our families. To cut the long story short so I can move on with my life, our family will be joined together by marriage…..’ Xeris’ jaw dropped, my eyes popped out. We already got the hint. ‘This marriage won’t just act as a solution to our problems but also as a way to tighten the everlasting bond between The Oceans and Xanders.’ Grandma Fiona finished. Everyone clapped.
What are they clapping about!
‘Since Xeris is the first son and heir, he shall renew the betrothment by giving Lyra, the only pure blood daughter of The Oceans a specially made engagement ring. They shall both exchanged rings in which marriage plans we commence shortly. ‘Grandma Lu added. I looked at Xeris quizzically, he was looking at me with mouth still open.
It must be a joke.
We both simultaneously broke into a bout of laughter while patting our grandmother.
‘Good one grand, you got me there for a while.’ He said laughingly. ‘Can you believe it Lyra, we getting married?’
‘I know right.’ We stopped laughing, nobody was laughing, just us. Beads of sweats designed my head. ‘Xeris,’ I whispered. ‘They are not laughing.’ I panicked in a whisper.
‘Maybe we’re dreaming.’ He whispered back.
‘I know it would come as a shock to you two but Lyra was betrothed to you at birth, it has been sealed…..’
‘Then you better unseal it!!!’ I scre-med. ‘Me! With this devil! Over my dead body!!!!’
‘Lyra calm down…’ Dad said distraughtly from the crowd. My head snapped to his direction
‘Is this why you called me back? To witness this nonsense? Why would you and mom…why would everybody lie to me like this!!!’
‘I don’t care what you old fools vowed, nobody is going to force me to marry anyone, not even a bullet will and that’s final!’ Xeris hissed and stomped away.
‘Xeris, come back here!!!’ Grandma Lu shouted. ‘Mixzi!!!!’
‘Don’t look at me, this was never in terms with me so you’re all on your own.’ She huffed and left too.
‘I’m not going to stand here any longer,’ I packed up my dress and walked out of the yard. Dad came after me. ‘I can’t believe you of all people could lie to me;’
‘Lyra listen, it was all my mother’s idea. I wanted to tell you but I couldn’t, your mom also made me promise not to tell so you won’t get upset…..’
‘And do I feel any better now,’ I snapped. ‘It would have been better if I knew than didn’t. Gosh! For twenty one years! Just get lost! I’m going back to Ruby and you or anyone can’t stop me or I’ll join mom wherever she is!!!’
‘Lyra please….’
‘Get lost!’ I scre-med, tears refused to stop flowing out. I angrily tore the dress so I could run well and ran out of the compound.
I will never marry Xeris, ever!
