HEARTACHES AND TEARS – Episode 21
A story by Kennedy C Katongo
NEBULOUS
I left the house rushing to look for a taxi because even Mr Saturday wasn’t coming through. I wouldn’t blame him, after all, it had been more than 5 months. Maybe our lines were even blocked.
I arrived at the small market in Garden-Chilulu. Lucky enough I found a taxi that wasn’t booked. I asked the driver if he could take me to the Police Station, he didn’t waste time and off we went. I did think about just calling him from home so that he could come and try sorting out the problem, but the police seemed like the right people.
The driver engaged me in small talk, he explained to me that he had seen me quite a number of times heading to the market.
Such conversations always ended with, ‘Whats your number’ and I wasn’t in the mood for such nonsense.
“I think that’s your phone.” The driver said. I was holding it in my hand and yet couldn’t get alarmed by the ringtone. That’s how lost I was, the thought of what had become of Amanda worried me.
I picked up the phone: It was Nathan calling.
“Oh Nathan. Thank goodness you have called.” “Where are you right now? Can you please come home?” I begged him.
“Calm down. You too fast. Is Amanda okay?” He asked me.
“No she isn’t. He boyfriend has been beating her up for some time now. His even locked the door.” I told him. Once the driver heard that, I could feel the momentum of the car change as he began to driver faster.
“Don’t worry am on my way. Which one is your place?” Nathan asked me.
“When you reach Thornpack school, 3 houses down, look out for a pale green gate. That’s the place.” I told him.
“Where are you?” He asked me.
“Am on the way to Emasdale Police Station.” I told him.
Before I could say another word the line had already cut. I knew his place was far, he then sent me a text asking me to go home. He assured me a police officer from Central Office would be arriving soon. Mr Saturday and his connections.
“Madam but why didn’t you tell me it was an emergency sure?” The driver asked.
“We need to go back home. A friend has called some Police Officer and they are on their way home.

When I got home, the driver asked to help but I refused. I didn’t want this to become a big deal. I entered the house and went to bang on the door. It was still locked, KK was still shouting and boasting about how he expected Amanda to respect him.
Suddenly I heard a car pull over, when I went to check, it was Nathan. He wore a short that I recognized and some black shoes. (Did he fly here) Realistically speaking, Nathan’s place was far, it was somewhere in Avondale. I was confused.
“Where is she?” He asked as he made big steps reaching were I stood.
“She’s still locked up in,side.” I responded, my voice was all shaky. It had been a while since I had seen Nathan mad, the last time I did – Amanda had gone against something he told her. It was like he changed, he became another person, violent I would add. Even though I had never seen or heard of him beating up someone.
“Amanda! Amanda!” He called out. He hit the door and it was still locked. He came back to the kitchen and got a container that was brick frozen from the fridge and went back to the door.
It was a serious moment but to say the truth, it was a bit weird. I didn’t understand why Nathan was already vicious when he arrived and now he was getting frozen water…
Before my eyes could catch up to him, he threw himself on the door and it bust open. I rushed to see if my friend was okay.

I booked a taxi and rushed to Thornpack, I had no clue where exactly I was going but I had to rush. I felt bad that I had to leave Mable, but for once, I think she understood what was going on. This time, she trusted me.
After I was done bathing, I received a phone call from Amanda. When I picked up, she wasn’t saying anything, furthermore, I could get the voice of the guy shouting and insulting her. I heard her voice, she cried out, at that moment, the beast in me was awaken.
When I arrived at the place Mwaka had shown me, I left the Taxi driver outside. He had no idea what was going on.
As I was closing the gate, Mwaka walked out from the house and stood as she waited for me, “Where is she?” I asked her.
“She’s still locked up in,side….” She said as I walked passed her. I opened almost every door that I saw, until I heard her shout, “The white door!”
I tried to open it but it was locked, “Amanda!” I called out. That was the second time I had called out.
“What the hell do you want?” A mans voice echoed from in,side.
I rushed to the Kitchen and checked the fridge for a frozen container… I didn’t know why I wanted it, but that just seemed to be what I wanted. Mwaka stood at a distance as she watched me. I went back running, when I was a step away, I jumped – throwing my body at the door. It opened. I immediately got up, Amanda was on the floor – flat, there was a small pool of blood on the floor beside her head.
I felt my knees get weak, seeing Amanda on the floor just scared me… “Amanda!” I called out as my voice could barely be heard.
From the left I received a punch on the face, the young man jumped on me and gave me fast blows to the stomach.
“What the hell, who are you? Can’t you mind your own damn business?” He asked me as he hit me again. I pushed him off me, he fail and hit his back on the bed. I struggled to get up, once I managed, I walked up to him, another punch on the same eye I had hit on earlier that afternoon. The damn bas***d couldn’t even recognize me.
As the fight was going on, Mwaka walked in, she rushed to Amanda and began pulling her out. Amanda wasn’t moving at all.
After exchanging a few punches to the jaw, the dude got a bottle of black label from the floor and hit me. I immediately k-ssed the floor, my vision went blurry as I could hærdly see a thing. He left me and went to pull Mwaka by the hair, he threw her on the bed and got on top of her.
“What! What! You want to get a piece of this?” He asked her. I could see that her face was covered, then I heard that lightening slap once again. She scre-med! I watched as he pulled her and tossed her to the floor and began to kick her. His big brown Timberland shoe was all over her body. I shook my heard to get it right, I got up slowly as I was avoiding passing out from the vertigo.
When I got up, Amanda wasn’t in site, Mwaka had managed to pull her out of the room, a trail of blood had followed, marking the direction where her body was.
I looked at Mwaka and she was now on the floor fighting for her breathe. The young drunk dude had stepped on her throat and was pressing hærd on her.
To rescue her, I came up on him with the spear, my shoulder hit his stomach and sent him off flying to the bed that was near the wall. I quickly got up, reached for the frozen container, I held it tightly as I hit his head without thinking twice. On the s₱0t, he passed out.
“Are you okay?” I asked Mwaka as I helped her up. She looked bad, her face was a mess.
“I can live…” She responded. “Is he dead?” She asked me.
“I don’t give a damn about him. Is Amanda okay?” I asked. We both walked out of the bedroom to the passage were Amanda’s body was laying on the floor.
