Heartaches And Tears – Episode 3

HEARTACHES AND TEARS – Episode 3
A story by Kennedy C Katongo
LOVE IN THE AIR
“Takuli food I dive some?” She asked as she began checking the pots that were under the bed. (In this context, DIVE or DIVING with regard to food means eating food that your friends have cooked without you being accounted for.)
“We have cooked. But we’re not eating now. So if you want to dive, Come around later.” I told her. She stopped checking the pots, her face became pale. Both Amanda and I could tell she was really hungry. That was how I got my bag and gave her a K5 note to get something.
Amanda was just looking at me as I did this, I could tell she was against me giving her money.
“Why did you give her money?” she asked me once the lady had left.
“Iwe. She looks hungry. It’s so obvious just by looking at her.” I responded.
“I could tell. She’s always hungry. Its not like we have ever dived when she cooks. She’s always the one diving in here.” Amanda said as she began changing her clothes into a short dress.
For a second I thought she was just joking, but nope, she was serious. “That dress is too much. You look like you going for business.” I told her as I shook my head.
“Now what should I put on?” She asked me as she threw the dress on the bed.
While we were busy talking, trying to decide on what she was going to put on… Her phone went on, it was a text from Mr Saturday.
“They have arrived. Will find them at Levy Junction.” Amanda said after reading the text. Unlike other men, Mr Saturday never parked his car in school no matter what. He prefer parking his car at Levy and then would walk into school to visit.

We arrived at Levy, Mr Saturday had told Amanda that we were going to find them outside, the first floor – when heading to the car park, in a pitched tent. I had been at the Misty before, but never in the small structure they had made outside. I remember we had been invited by a certain guy who had interest in me. I didn’t feel comfortable meeting him alone (Facebook things lol) so I asked Amanda to tag along.
“There they are.” Amanda said as we were approaching the door that led outside. She was just like this, she had good eye site. It took me time to just have a clear view of them, in fact, I saw them clearly once we were at the door.
“That’s him!” I said passively as my eyes got fixed on the other guy whom I presumed was Mr Saturday’s friend.
There was never a dull moment with him ( Damn married men) the second we walked passed that door. Mr Saturday stood up and followed us up, behind him his friend just stood up with a small smile that only exposed part of his teeth. Amanda was greeted with a warm hug and a k-ss to the forehead as usual. I had read up on what k-sses meant, I knew that meant just friendsh¡p but there was always a deep connection when he k-ssed her on the head than what the gesture itself meant.
After that he walked up to me, took a look at me and spoke his mind. “Someone looks stunning. How are you?” He asked me as he hugged me.
“Hello Mr…” Before I could finish my line I remembered how much he hated the nickname. He had never told me to my face, my friend on the other hand always got the lecture about it.
“Come have a seat. Ladies, I would like you to meet a good friend of mine. This is Emmanuel…” He said as he pointed at him. I had never – even for once – believed in love at first sight. I found the theory to be weird and far fetched. Nevertheless, in that instant, that’s what I felt.
Emmanuel wasted no time, he walked up to us and without notice hugged Amanda, “I’ve heard so much about you. Nice to finally meet you.” He told her.
“Is that so? I hope you’ve only heard the good this things about me.” She responded with a giggle. Mr Saturday laughed, “Only the best.” He commented from the background.
Time is relative, Albert said (The scientist dude). In that belief, I watched as Emmanuel confidently walked up to me in slow motion. The smile on his face, His Masculine body which was shown off by the T-shirt he wore.
“You must be Mwaka.” I heard all of the sudden as I snapped out of my relative time zone.
“Me?” I asked. “Oh sorry!” I giggled nervously. I stopped talking, took in a deep one and then spoke. “Yes I am.” I smiled.
Emmanuel stood there, he didn’t know what to do next. Hug me or Shake my hand. Finally he moved closer to me and gave me the friendly hug (the one you hug someone from the shoulder side) (My God! He had the scent of a god. The dude smelt like flowers.) I loved me a man who could smell good.
“Please, take a seat.” He said warmly as he took my hand.
From there on wards it was more of a group discussion kind of arrangement. We spoke about little things, like how the feeling was since we had now finished college. Mr Saturday had already ordered some fried wings. So the moment we arrived the young waitress walked in with a plate full of them. As we were talking, Amanda and Mr Saturday took off, for a walk outside the car park which left only me and Emmanuel with a plate of wings (A lady has to eat!).

“I thought she wasn’t going to come through.” I told Amanda as we slowly walked. This wasn’t our first time taking a walk here, this place was more of our hiding place. We usually met from here, at times we could be seated in the car for hours just talking and eating Hungry Lion.
“Yeah! She kind of hesitated. But for some reason she just sprang to life when I told her your friend was coming.” Amanda smiled.
“That explains why she was so nervous.” I laughed.
“How are the kids doing?” She asked as she help my hand and began to play with it. I had never told her how much I loved this – I always felt calm and relaxed when she did it.
“The boys are fine. They are at granny’s for the weekend.” I told her. Amanda had met my kids before – they got along pretty well. Another thing that almost got me burnt at home, Mabel found out that I had met up with someone while I had taken them shopping and she lost it. Apart from that, she never asked about my wife.
“So what are you planning to do, now that you’re done with college?” I asked her.
“I don’t know. Mwaka and I are planning on renting a house. You know – look for work and see how it goes.” She said.
“Would your parents approve of that?” I laughed.
“I doubt. I haven’t even told them about it. They wanted me to leave for Mpika tomorrow.” She said with an evil smile.
“Tomorrow? That’s fast. I think the idea of you staying here sounds good. I can help you find work. I know some guys.” I told her, we had not walked to the far end of the car park. The side that faced the Dog Shelf.
“No! No! No! I don’t want you to find me a job. Am going do it on my own.” Amanda objected. “You’ve already helped me enough.” She said as she shook her heard.
I held her by the neck and k-ssed her, in my small heard, this always calmed her down. At least that was what I imagined to be the case every time I did it. She pushed me and stepped back a little. “You definitely not going to win this by k-ssing me. That’s taking advantage of me.” she said in a childish voice. This always made me laugh.
“Okay. I won’t do it for now. However am just telling you the truth. I can find you a good job with a good pay.” I insisted. There had always been something about Amanda that I couldn’t figure out. I always felt like helping her. I wanted to be there for her.
“You are now behaving like a Sugar Daddy.” She said passively as I walked towards her while she continued to walk away from me.
“Sugar Daddy? Ouch! That hurts. Am way to young to be that. I don’t even have a belly to qualify for that title.” I said jokingly to as a way of adding more wood to the fire.
