Chapter 7 🌹

I was taken aback, frozen on my s₱0t.

My brain was processing what just happened cause I can’t see to remember anymore.

My Cody? On the floor?

“Oh my God! ” Bryna scre-med and ran over to Cody and a crowd started forming there.

“Amy ” Caden cried and I blinked rapidly.

“oh no ” I whispered and ran to Cody.

His head was bleeding and there were injuries all over his body.

The floor was filled with his blood and people already started calling ambulance.

“Baby ” I cried and made him lay on my thighs.

I can’t afford to loose Cody, mom will be mad at me.

Both of them are my world and I can’t even take care of them!

“Baby please open your eyes, look at me ” I told him, gently rubbing his left cheek.

Everyone just stood there, staring at me go mad.

“No no Cody please don’t do this, f-cking open your eyes! ” I yelled cause he wasn’t responding to me.

“Hey calm down ” Bryan said, his hand was on my left shoulder.

“Leave me alone! I just want my baby to open his eyes ” I snapped at him.

The ambulance arrived and everyone gave way to the paramedics to take care of my Cody.

They placed him on a stretcher and took him in,side the ambulance.

Caden and I want in while Bryna stayed behind.

They gave him immediate treatment as we headed to the hospital.

An oxygen mask was fixed on him and one of the paramedics kept pumping in the air after 5 secs or so.

I held Cody’s hand and hugged Caden to myself.

We arrived at the city hospital and Cody was rushed in with Caden and I running behind them.

He was taken in for treatment and we were asked to wait outside the treatment room.

I made Caden sit down while I kept pacing back and forth cause I couldn’t bring myself to even sit down in peace.

My Cody is fighting for his life right now and if anything happens, I don’t know.

Caden just kept staring at me and his facial expression hurt me more.

I went over to him and picked him up in my arms.

He buried his face in the crook of my neck and I k-ssed his hair.

“It’s all gonna be okay baby, we’ll have Cody back ” I told him and he nodded.

Minutes after, Caden fell asleep in my arms so I had to ask one of the nurses to show me where I could lay Caden down for a while.

I was directed to a room with children beds and I laid Caden on one.

I put the blanket over him, k-ssed him and went back out.

After what seemed like a lifetime, the doctor came out.

I let out a breath as a sigh as I waited for the doc to tell me about my brother.

“Yes? ” I asked the doctor before he could talk cause I was running out of patients.

“Well, your brother suffered a deep injury on the head which caused a lot of damage to his system ” he blurted out.

“OK? ” I blinked rapidly.

“So we don’t know of he’s gonna survive it ” he said and I raised an eyebrow.

“What do you mean you don’t know if he’s gon survive it? You’re the doctor, you should know! ” I snapped at him.

“Well, we’ve worked on him and given him treatment so we have to wait for 24 hours for him to regain consciousness and if he doesn’t then… ”

“Then what?!” I interrupted him, tears already filling my eyes with my heart beating like its gonna fall out of my chest.

“Then he’s gonna be in coma ” he replied.

Coma? Well, coma doesn’t doesn’t mean death but he can still die in coma! OMG.

“And if he doesn’t go into coma? ” I asked with a coarse voice.

“Then I’m afraid he’ll die ” he blurted out.

“Pay the bills and pray for the best to happen ” he said and walked away.

My little Cody, my baby, he’s just a child, he’s just a baby but he’s going through all these, I failed, I always fail.

I fell on the floor and sobbed.

“Ma’am ” someone called and I looked up, wiping my tears.

“You have to make the payment wake the treatment will be stopped ” a nurse told me and I nodded slowly.

I struggled up with my legs wobbling below me and walked to the receptionist.

I was given the bill and it made me cry more.

So much money? Just for a kid’s treatment? A kid we aren’t sure if he’s gonna make it?

For f-ck sake this bill is like my wh0le life savings and I’m not even sure if it’s up to it.

“I’ll be back ” I told the receptionist and went to get Caden from where he was sleeping.

I woke him up and carried him in my arms.

We went out and boarded a taxi home.

I took him to his room and made him continue his sleep.

I went to my room and took out all the money I haven’t taken to the bank yet and counted them all, it didn’t even reach the quarter of the hospital bill.

I have to go withdraw all my money from the bank.

Unfortunately, my lil Cody underwent a surgery in the head which costs millions and the treatment given to him were expensive as hell, that’s what’s on his file.

Plus since we don’t know if he’s gonna wake up in the next 24 hours, I’ll have be ready to pay more bills cause he’s gonna be given continuous treatment if he goes into coma.

I told Mrs Morg-n to look after Caden for me and take very good care of him while I headed to the bank.

I arrived at the bank and did the necessary which took me almost an hour or so.

All the money I withdrew plus the ones I took from my room sum up the hospital bills and I only had some change left.

I rushed back to the hospital and made the payment.

They allowed me see my Cody so I just went to his hospital room.

He was laying peacefully on the bed and that only made me cry more.

He looked so lifeless laying there, not even looking at me, so heart breaking.

I went over to him and gently took his hand in mine.

My little Cody is gonna be alright, yes he’s gonna be fine.

Mom, if you’re watching us right now, please help us.

I wanted to spend more time with Cody but I have to take care of Caden too, can’t afford to let him get hurt this time.

And yeah, they have to tell me why and how they got to my resto after telling them not to leave the house.

I left the hospital and went outside.

I headed to where I’d take a bus cause I can’t afford a taxi right now.

I was so engrossed in my own thoughts I didn’t realise when I almost walked into a car.

My jaw dropped and I just froze in front of the car.

The driver and the owner stepped out and I froze even more when I saw it was Luca Devon, our competition sponsor.

Chapter 8 💋

He came outta the car and stared at me with furrowed brows.

“Uhm I’m very sorry, really really sorry ” I apologized.

He stared at me, not saying anything so I just stood there.

He boarded back his car and they drove into the hospital compound.

I boarded the bus and went home.

I met Caden on the couch, already awoke.

He smiled when he saw me and I smiled back at him.

I sat beside him and placed him on my thighs.

“OK honey, I want you to be honest with me okay? ” I told him and he nodded.

“Why and how did you guys get to my resto? ” I asked him and he was silent for a while.

“Uhm…. We found a picture in your room ” he started.

“Whose picture? ” I asked him.

“I don’t know, it was a picture of a man so I told Cody that it might be dad but Cody said no. We were arguing so we decided to come ask you ” he narrated.

“You both disobeyed me just for a picture?! ” I yelled at him and he flinched making me regret it.

“OK but how did you get to my resto? You’ve only been there once ” I asked him.

“We also found your card and the address of your resto was there so we told the bus driver to please take us to you by giving him the card ” he narrated.

Wow! Just wow! This is the best story ever, lame!

“When Cody gets well, you’re both getting punished ” I stated clearly and he wore a sad face.

“Now tell me what you wanna eat lemme go make dinner ”

“Mashed potatoes ” he replied.

“OK ” I smiled at him and went to the kitchen to make it while he watches cartoons.

I have to be strong, though I feel like breaking down and crying the hell out, I have to be strong.

I have to take care of Caden but if anything happens to Cody, I’ll never be able to forgive myself and the guilt will eat me up.

I made the mashed potatoes then took Caden to bath him.

I finished bathing him and dressed him up in a long sleeve shirt and a sweat p-nt.

He went downstairs while I went to freshen up.

I freshened up and dressed up as well before going downstairs.

I prepared the table and fed Caden.

After feeding him, he went to continue his cartoons while I ate.

I was done so I cleared the table.

I gave Caden a hoodie and I took one myself.

I carried him out, locked the door and we went to the hospital.

We’re not letting Cody sleep alone at the hospital, no.

We arrived at the hospital and I made Caden sleep on the three person sofa in Cody’s hospital room.

I on the other hand, sat on the chair and rested my head on Cody’s hospital bed.

It took quite a while for sleep to envelope me unlike every other days before.

“Miss Amy ” I heard my name in a low tone and I slowly opened my eyes.

I regained myself and sat up.

In front of me was the doctor and he smiled at me.

“I’m here to check up on Cody” he said and I nodded, giving him way.

“OK, his heart beat is intact and everything seems to be normal ” he said.

“Just few hours for it to be 24 hours and we’ll see if he responded to the treatment ” he said and I nodded.

He exited the room and I sighed.

Few hours, just few hours for my Cody to feel alive again.

Caden was still asleep so I left him sleep before we go home.

He woke up a while later and after k-ssing Cody goodbye, we went home.

It’s Sunday and Sunday’s aren’t really that fun so I think it’s a good day for me to sulk.

We ate the leftovers of mashed potatoes after freshening up of course.

I decided to go check if Bryan opened the resto today cause I left him yesterday and didn’t go back.

I took Caden along with me to the resto and Bryan did open it.

“Hey ”

“Amy ” he called when he saw me.

I smiled at him and he smiled back.

“How’s your son? ” he asked and I sighed.

“We don’t know for now, we have few hours to know if he’s gonna wake, go into coma or… Yunno, die ” I told him and sighed again.

Caden glanced up at me when he heard me say “die” but I flashed him a heart warming smile.

“He’s gonna be okay ” Bryan said and I nodded.

“Ik, at least that’s what I believe ” I told him.

“Well, I sold a lot yesterday and you’ll be surprised if you see what we earned ” he said.

“Well, that’s cool cause I’m in need of cash ” I told him.

“Ik, considering what happened yesterday of course you’ll need money ” he fired at me.

He brought all out the money and handed it over to me.

“Thanks ” I told him and he nodded with a smile.

“Do I have to pay you? ” I asked him with a weird look.

“Don’t worry, I took the tips ” he blurted out.

“Bish that’s still my money ” I snapped at him and he chuckled.

“Oh please ” He rolled his eyes.

I had Bryan make Caden French fries and serve him juice.

My phone rang and it was an unknown number.

“Hello? ” I said into the phone.

“Hello Miss Amy, all competitors are to show up immediately at the company ” the person said at the other end.

“Uhm OK thanks ” I told him and he hung up.

“Bryan please take care of Caden for me, I have to go to the company for the competition ” I told him.

“That means we weren’t disqualified ” Bryan said and I nodded with a smile.

“Gimme your contact, in case I have something to tell you ” I told him and he gave me his contact.

I k-ssed Caden goodbye and left.

I arrived at the company and went in without stress this time, no climbing windows.

Different cooks were there and we are given seats to sit down, waiting for the so called announcement they have for us.

A woman dressed in a suite stood on the podium and flashed us an ugly smile.

Just kidding, it was a beautiful smile.

“Y’all welcome. The reason for this meeting is to announce to y’all that the competition will be tomorrow and that’s Monday “She blurted and everyone gasped.

What the f-ck? So soon? We haven’t even prepared for it yet! But well, I need the money so it’s good for me.

“That’s not all, every competitor have to fill form so y’all go out there to that desk and take a number ” she said with a smile.

“Fill the form and submit it back then get ready for the competition tomorrow which starts at 10:00 ” she announced and left the podium.

So many people and before we’ll all get numbers, it would be already Monday.

Uhhh….. Lemme call Bryan to close the resto and go check up on Cody cause it would soon be his time to wake up.

I called Bryan and told him what to do before hanging up.

Now let’s focus here.

We already took numbers and unfortunately for me, I got number 105, how sad.

OK so the competitors were grouped and I fell in group 3.

I don’t know how they’re gonna handle this cause there’s just too many people.

I checked my wrist watch and it was already late, 17:05.

Cody should have been awake by now so why hasn’t Bryan called me yet? Is it a bad news? I’m feeling sad now.

After a while, I was able to take a form, filled it and submitted it.

My phone rang and twas Bryan which made me heave a sigh of relief.

Thought he was never gonna call.

“Yes Bryan, tell me, did my Cody ask about me? ” I asked with a bright smile.

“Uhm Amy ” he called lowly.

I can’t see him but I could tell from his voice that something was wrong.

“No please don’t tell me ” I said, my voice already cracking up.

“Did he go into coma?” I asked.

“Uhmm..” he hesitated on the phone.

That means my Cody didn’t wake up nor go into coma? Which means he’s… He’s gone?

“I’m sorry ” he said but his voice felt so low like and everything turned blur as I collapsed to the ground.
