CHAPTER FIFTEEN:

Skylar ๐Ÿ–Š๏ธ

I kind of hated myself for not helping.

With the anticipation burning in me, the night went fast. Oh thank God!

I rush with my morning routine, finding paying Crystal a visit as an excuse to ask her about last night.

Geez! What was that cry for?

I offered a knock on the door, waiting patiently for the approaching movement to come open the door for me.

I was staring down, but when the door swung open, I looked up.

“Good morning,” she greeted. “Come on in. You came at the right time.”

” I had to keep to my promise. Where are your parents?”

” Upstairs.” She said, pointing at the direction which lead to the upper rooms.

I walked in, glaring around the room. Although the outside didn’t wear a beautiful look, the in,side was something to speak about.

I sat on one of the chairs, waiting for her parents to show up. Asking her about last night was a good idea but not just now.

I watched as she arranged the plates on the table, dropping a plate full of rice at the center with another plate containing stew and something spicy.

Wait, is that chicken?

My favorite.

Not quite long, I heard footsteps approaching with a whispering murmuring voices of laughter. I breathed deeply,

โ€œExcuse me, they aren’t Zeus and Mary, they’re just couples. โ€

The word echoed in my mind. Then I was left staring at this two lovely couples.

“Hey! Good morning.” I greeted stretching out for a handshake.

” Good morning. ” They replied in unison. “How are you?” Now, Crystal’s mother asked.

” I’m fine, what about you? ”

She nodded, smilingly. ” I’m fine too. Come join us, you just came at the right time. ”

I followed them to the dinning, sitting at the chair close to Crystal. At first, we ate in silence then as the quietness grew more uncomfortable than anyone could ever imagine, Crystal’s father spoke, “so, what’s your name dear?”

“Skylar. . . I’m Skylar Crescent. ”

” That’s a nice name, you know that. ”

I blushed, couldn’t believe someone could compliment on my name. I mean, for the first time in my life someone liked my name!

“So Skylar, do you live around here?” He asked again.

“Dad, I already told you, she doesn’t live here. She only came. . . ”

” For a visit, ” I completed, cutting her short. ” I was sent here by a friend to get something he thinks will be of help in the future. ”

” Calendula? ” He asked, even without me telling him.

Pretty sure Crystal might have told him a lot. No wonder why she was feeling so uncomfortable over the discussion. Maybe, she just doesn’t want me to feel like she talks a lot.

Duh, who cares?

I chewed on the hand spoon of the rice, swallowing it. I looked at Crystal to see her playing with her food. I wanted to ask why she stopped eating, but then he began, “Well, this calendula has been our healer for so many years. It was found by Shaman forefathers after the war which separated us from the mountain men. But, I’ve heard about the city and towns, they don’t use herbs, they treat their patients with solid drugs. ”

I laughed, he was actually right. But somehow, most drugs we take nowadays are gotten from the local herbs. Only that it has to be formed into tablets through some scientific method.

“I won’t doubt that, but they’re a lot about science you do not know. More than you can never imagine and I will tell you, they have proven most impossibilities. So, guessing how this calendula work out as a drug to those in cities, leave it for the scientist. ”

He smiled, ” You’re a doctor, right? ”

I felt Crystal’s eyes on me, surprised I may say. “Yes.”

“Now I see. What is it like being a doctor?”

Crystal’s spoon fell on her plate and I knew she had done that on purpose to interrupt her father’s questions.
It wasn’t bad asking, I mean, I wasn’t complaining.

Was I?

I smiled at her act, replying to the old man’s question. Not really old, tho, might just be in his middle sixty.

“It’s like a blessing being a medical doctor because thousands of lives will depend on you. And how much love you show to your patients determine what kind of doctor you are. It’s just like a duty, a responsibility when you’re been called into this job. It’s the best thing anyone will ever wish for. ”

” Are there any good recommendations about you? I mean by your patients? ”

” Dad?”

I chuckled, smiling.” Honestly, they’re a lot of them which I can’t basically start counting now. ”

He nodded.

” You’re such a darling to have such recommendations. ” I turned my gaze at Crystal’s mother who had only spoken for the first time in this discussion.

“Thanks, ma’am.”

“Have you found out where the calendula is?” She asked.

“Yes, Crystal took me to the place yesterday. ”

” Oh bless you, my daughter. I’m very proud of you. ”

For the first time Crystal did smile. ” Thanks Mom. ”

We had more discussion as we gradually finished up the remaining meal.

Mr and Mrs Bren who I had only gotten to know their name at the dying time excused themselves, leaving me with Crystal.

Thank God.

I’ll get to ask her about last night.

After she was done with the dishes, we decided for a walk outside. Firstly, complimenting on her food. I swear, those tastes aren’t out of my head right now.

“So,” she started, “how was your night?”

Well, that was a nice start.

“It was great. I mean not that great… great but, ” I shrug, ” at least manageable. ”

She laughed in those melodic tones and I felt embarrassed for liking it.

” Yours?”

She shook her head. “We heard the cry, we all did and no one wanted to sleep again. ”

” I’m sorry. ”

” Seriously? Come on Skylar, it’s not your fault. ”

I know but. . . How long will they keep living in fear. Every night, everyone will have to be awake for security purposes against this whatsoeverisoutthere.

Although I was awake for the rest of the night, I’ll admit I had some nice sleep. “I heard it too. Who was it that cried?” I asked.

“Mrs Karolina, she lives at that house over there. ” She said, pointing to the direction of an old hut.

” Is she alive? ”

” No,” she shook. “Her with her son, they were the unlucky ones last night. ”

” But, ” I paused, thinking. Why would they think of leaving there homes at the first place? Despite knowing fully well of the happenings happening within the village.

Her son?

Oh no!

“How old is her son?”

“Eleven twelve not really sure.”

“Bodies found?”

“No.”

“Poor them.”

There’s only one way to find out what this monster is.

It’s footprints.

Somehow, there must be a trail it must have left behind. Just might not have occurred to them that every creature has a leftover evidence. Only if I can find were Mrs Karolina had sยขrรฆmed from, then can I find what I’m thinking.

“Skylar?” I heard my name bringing me back to reality.

“Sorry, you were saying?”

“Aren’t you picking some herbs today? ”

“We gathered a lot yesterday, that will be tomorrow. ”

Maybe somehow I have to prove Crystal wrong when she said, “you can’t see it, you can only hear it.”

” You never told me you were a doctor.”

” You never asked.”

” Yeah, I know. So, what kind of doctor are you?”

” Well, I’m the normal doctor everyone knows. I mean, those who takes care of the sick, delivers babies and the rest of them. Well, you’ll get to know more about me as soon as I take you out of Shaman. ”

Something is missing.

Van Nuys.

Did I ever mentioned that?

” Oh, I also worked at as psychiatrist. Actually, that was only for a month.”

” Why?”

” There’s this guy I was asked to take care of. He was,,,” I sighed. ” He was a murderer and a criminal.”

“Like a wanted person?” She added.

” You can say that. But he end up escaping and till today, he’s nowhere to be found. ” Logan’s image appeared in my mind, the thought about him leaving and never coming back broke my heart and. . .

I felt a hand on my shoulder, I turned to look at Crystal who was already staring at me with confusion on her face.

“I won’t mind if you don’t have to tell me.”

I shook my head, I wanted to tell her. I wanted to tell her everything but it’s just difficult. I just don’t want to believe Logan has left me for good, I just want to believe he’s got a reason for doing what he did.

“He wasn’t just my patient,” I kept looking at her, ” he was my lover.” A ‘I’m sorry look’ played on her face.

” I know it’s crazy…”

She cut me short, “No it’s not. It’s never wrong falling in love with someone. Did he loved you back?”

I nodded.

” Then believe he’s got a reason for running. He surely will come back for you, I believe in my instinct.”

Those are the same word Vera told me. God, am I actually talking with another version of Vera?

If he was really going to come back for me, When will that be?

It’s almost another month and he hasn’t come back. I’m desperately wanting to see him, to have myself in his warm embrace, to have those l-ips in mine.

But how long will I have to wait for those?
