CHAPTER 23

Valerie stayed behind the door and cried, her head hurts and she started feeling great headache as a result
She later fell on the bed and continued crying
Yeah, she caused it by stupidly getting drunk but…
He overdid it by making her fall and hit her head that hærd on the wall
“What if I had lost consciousness” she thought, wiping her tears as new round fell
She never came out of the room even at dinner…
Dwayne waited for her to come out at the dinning room when their food is finally ready but she didn’t come out
He stood and left for her door
He started hitting it again
“Val” he called slowly as he continued hitting her door
“Val…ok I’m……. sorry” he said awkwardly, it feels hærd to say cos besides his late mum, he has never said that to anyone before
“Sorry for making you hit your head but it wasn’t intentional….it was a mistake so you need to come out and eat dinner” he said
Valerie said nothing
” Retarded” he called
He called that countless times but still, she never came out
He went back to the dinning room and he has actually lost his appetite by now
He eventually went back to his room , leaving the food untouched…
He never slept till daybreak, he took his bath and brushed before putting on a big hoodie and white trousers
It’s Sunday, they’ll be going back home tomorrow
He left his room and when he saw Valerie’s door, he started feeling guilty again
He knocked three times and when he got no answer, he barged in but she’s not in
He left the room and went to the dinning room
She’s there, eating slowly…
He sat in front of her silently too and started eating
That she came out to eat is an improvement
They ate in silence and strangely, it’s boring even when he’s the one who’s always saying it’s not good to talk while eating
Right now eating without talking to her feels extra boring
Valerie finished eating and stood
She took her cross bag from the other chair and made to go out
Dwayne stood and blocked her way
“Why are you being like this?” He said
She avoided his eyes and took the other way
She left the suite without uttering a word
He spent all day in the suite all by himself, no one to talk to…

“I need to change my wardrobe, honey you need to follow me to the boutique this evening” Robin said, sitting on the couch beside Melanie
” Sure, when are we moving?” She asked
“Like now” he replied
She smiled and stood
“But I’m not really good in fashion and style” she said
*It doesn’t matter, I love you more than fashion and style so anything you pick for me will be fashionable to me” he replied
She pecked his cheeks before they climbed upstairs together…
” But we’ll branch somewhere while coming” she said
” Where?”
” Survivors hospitals to see my dad” she replied
“Sure” he said, entering his room to change
She entered her room too
Philip is sleeping in his room
After changing, she went to his room to tell him
She sat beside him on the bed and smiled at his handsomeness even when sleeping
“Phil” she called slowly
He opened his eyes and smiled widely when he saw her
“You should have woken me up with a kss” he said
“I’m sorry” she replied
” Just joking, you haven’t given me an answer anyways…so where are you going all dressed?” He asked
” Robin says he wants to change wardrobe so I want to follow him” she replied
” That kid, he had barely put on half of the clothes in his closet..well it’s cool” he said, bringing out a debit card
” Here” he said
She took it
“It’s yours now” he said
“What!”
“Chill and just spend the money…spend it anyhow ok?, I love you” he said and kssed her lightly before laying on the bed again
She smiled before getting up, she left the room and met Robin downstairs, waiting for her already
“Let’s move” she said
He smiled and winked before leaving the house with her
They went to his usual boutique and she can’t help but be marvelled
It’s big! And full of new designers
Just mention it!
The attendants gathered around him Immediately they sighted him and started greeting him
“Young master welcome”
“Young master welcome”
” She’s not invisible you know” he said, gesturing at Melanie
” Greetings Miss” they greeted with bows.
“It’s ok” Melanie replied
” So same respect you guys give to me, give to her too…. she’ll soon occupy a special space in my life” he said
They bowed in response
” So honey, let’s get started, pick for me” he said
“Ok dear” she replied and started picking while the attendants kept following with baskets
Till the ten baskets are almost full, they kept shopping and shopping
She later payed with the card and they left the place
“And you were saying you aren’t fashionable, I can’t ask for more cos you picked the ones I’d have picked so apparently we have the same taste” he said, pecking her
She bit her lip and smiled as the car stopped in front of the hospital
They entered together and went straight to his ward
“Dad I’ve come again” she said, holding his hand after sitting beside him
“Is he in coma?” Robin asked
“Worse than coma, he’s in a vegetative state” she replied sadly
“What’s the difference between coma and vegetative state?” He asked
“A person in coma can’t respond to certain stimuli’s but a person in a vegetative state can do that… It’s a state of impaired brain function and it lasts for long than coma” she replied
” So he moves now” Robin asked
” Yes he does, he moves slightly if you touch him but he just won’t be able to stand or do anything till he wakes up” she replied
” It’s true!, His fingers moved just now” Robin said and looked at Melanie
” You’re sad” he said
” I just hope he wakes up soon” she said and a doctor entered
” Doctor”
“Miss Melanie”
“Thanks for taking care of dad doctor” she said
“It’s my work, and you’re a persistent lady, strong too so I’ve decided to keep pushing it and taking care of him till he wakes up”
” I think I should make a down payment for next month” she said
” No, Mr Albert already did that, he came by yesterday and spent a lot of time with him, we gave him the hospital account number and he has told us never to bother you about payment again, he’ll be paying us directly” the doctor said
Robin smiled
” Really?” Melanie said, Philip kept surprising her…
” Yes Miss, so don’t stress yourself anymore”
She left the hospital, thinking of just how to express her gratitude
She called Susan to inform her
“I have been informed when I went to the hospital this morning, I’ve called him and thanked him a lot…he’s an angel in human form” Susan said on phone
” Mum he’s doing a lot” she said
” I know… just… don’t disappoint Please” Susan said
” I understand, love you mum…bye!”.
She hung up and inhaled hærd
Robin is already sleeping
She carried him in when they finally got home, she lay him on his bed
The driver took in all what they got and she went to Philip’s room
He’s on his laptop already but she hugged him Immediately she got to him, taking him by surprise
“Melanie” he said , hugging her back, she started crying, tears of joy
“Thanks Phil, thanks for paying my dad’s bills, I’m just so grateful, I dunno how to thank you, thanks for all what you’ve been doing for me and my family..im….
He interrupted by breaking the hug and placing his finger on her lip
“I don’t want to hear thanks again, just be happy ok?* He said
” Phil…
” Ok?” He said
She nodded
He smiled and held her shoulders
“Always smile, that’s what I want to always see on your pretty face please” he said
She nodded again as he wiped her tears
” I love you ” he said
She smiled and hugged him again
“Melanie*
” Uhm” she answered on his shoulder
” How do you want me to dress to work tomorrow?” He asked
She broke the hug and faced him
” Anything fits you” she said
“I know, but I’m going back to work after three wh0le weeks, I need to look different” he replied
” ok… I’ll choose for you tommorow” she replied, smiling brightly
“Yeah, that’s what I want to hear” he said, shutting down his laptop
CHAPTER 24
“I really do love you more Phil” Melanie thought in her heart again as she rested in his arms
Dipping her face in his chest like this gives her great solace and she can’t ask for more
She smiled in that position and soon slept off…

Valerie never came back till the evening, she actually went to see the waters alone though she feels lonely althrough but…. She’s just doing it
She got back to the suite and met Dwayne in the living room
He spranged up and came to her though she kept walking
“Where have you been?” He asked
She refused to answer and he kept following her
“Are you gonna continue being like this?, I think I apologized already, what else should I do? ” He said
Valerie ignored him and entered her room
He stayed by her door for some minutes before leaving for his room
None of them touched dinner too and the next morning during the ride to the airport, it was silent althrough and boring….

“I think this will go well with a black tie” Melanie said, checking out an orange coloured shirt in Phil’s wardrobe
“Your wish” he replied behind her, he’s actually hugging her from behind as she picked what he’ll wear
“Then for the trousers” she said and picked black trousers too with stone design at the base
“This” she said, he immediately kssed her ear and that sent butterflies down her belly
“Ok sweetheart, I’ll just wear that” he said, still not letting go of her
” Phil you should go dress up, you’re late for work” she said
Robin has actually left for school with his driver
Phil rested his head on her shoulder and tightened the grip of his hand on her tummy
“I know I’m late but….I don’t feel like leaving you here, I’ll be thinking of you all day” he said
She smiled and held his hand on her tummy
“Then let’s snap a selfie together, you’ll stare at it anytime you miss me, what about that?” She said
” Uhmmmm, that won’t be like when I see you for real” he said
” But it’ll still be better” she replied
“Maybe you’re right” he said and let go of her, he brought his phone from the bed and hugged her lightly
“Face the camera” he said
They both faced the camera and smiled, he snapped the picture
“It’s cute!, Isn’t it crazy that you look so beautiful even early in the morning?” He said
” It’s more crazy that you look handsome early in the morning” she replied
He smiled and hugged her again…
” I can’t wait to hear that three words from you too…I love you so much sweetheart” he said and k-ssed her neck before letting her go
” Ok, into the bathroom” he said and left for the bathroom after winking
Melanie smiled widely
He’s not only lovely and caring…. he’s also extra cute!
AR group of companies**
“Morning boss”
“Good morning boss”
His staffs greeted as he walked elegantly into the company with a big smile on his face
His six trail of guards are behind him as usual, just that no new manager yet though vacancy has been pasted for his new manager and a lot of people applied…
He waved at the staffs who are greeting him and they can’t be more surprised

He got to his floor and waved at his workers too, taking them by surprise again before entering his office…
Not so much to do cos he has done most of it from home already so just a little bit of work left to do
One of the staffs entered and took a bow
“Sir, I’ve conducted the interview for the applicants, I picked one eligible person….her name is Sally Chad”
” Sally Chad?, Why does that name ring a bell?,…wait…it can’t be chef Sally…send her in” he replied
The staff left and some minutes later, Sally came in all smiles
“I knew it” he said, smiling too
“Mr Philip Albert” she said, standing still
“Please sit” he said
“Thanks sir” she replied and sat
“Wait…the last time I checked, you’re a chef at Unique school of nutritionists” he said
” Yeah, but Melanie will be graduating on Friday, it’ll feel boring without her for sure” she replied
” Like this week Friday?, She’ll be a graduate?” He said
” Sure, she didn’t inform you?” She asked
“At all… wow!” He said, smiling
” So that’s why I submitted my credentials when I saw the vacancy for your manager when I figured it out that I’m capable, I studied management in school” she said
” Really?, Then how come you’re a talented chef?”
” I learnt all my chef skills from my late mum” she replied
” Oh…nice, so automatically you’re my new manager…I can’t ask for more and I hope we get along” he said
” Sure sir….so when are we expecting to hear wedding bells?” She asked
” It depends on when Melanie says something, I’m still hanging” he replied
” Oh…you don’t have to worry, by the way I can start work today right?” She asked
” Sure, my chief staff will show you your office, I’m sure you know what to do and how to handle things” he said
” Sure” she replied and stood before leaving the office
Philip smiled and picked his phone, he actually used the picture he snapped with Melanie as his wall paper…
He started staring at it and car-ssing her l-ips from the picture
“Why didn’t you tell me you’re graduating on Friday?, Silly you” he said and smiled
” What kind of surprises are good for graduations?” He wondered

” Chef Sally is not here anymore?” Melanie asked surprisingly when a chef told her
“Yeah, she quitted cos she said this place will be boring without someone” the chef replied and left
Melanie got it immediately, because of her
“Really?” She thought and smiled before dialling her number
“Sally” she said over the phone
“Dear….you just need to get the necessary forms from the dean and sign them, that’s all then…. come on Friday for your certificate and graduation ceremony” Sally said
” You quit being a chef”
” Oh.. yeah, it’d be boring without you so I’ve resumed being the manager of your husband to be” she replied
” You’re Phil’s new manager?”
“Yeah, luckily, and luckily too I’m comfortable here, his staffs are too friendly and I’m making friends already, not like in the school , full of grumpy nutritionists” she said
Melanie laughed
” Congrats dear….work hærd”
“Sure darling…go get the forms now” Sally said
” Yeah dear” she replied and hung up
She sighed hærd and inhaled
“Finally leaving this school on Friday, I can’t wait

Valerie and Dwayne’s flight back home was extra boring cos throughout again…. No one talked…
Susan and Lillian are already waiting for Valerie as the airport when they landed
Then the principals who saw them off are all there again but without uttering a word, Dwayne stopped a cab and got in Immediately, he left in it…
“Is something wrong?, When you guys were leaving he was frowny and quiet but now he’s more frowny and he looks like something is wrong with him” Lillian said
” Nothing’s wrong” Valerie replied, hugging her
” Daughter” Susan said and hugged her too
“Thanks for making us proud” the principals started congratulating again and she almost got tired of hearing that
Now she misses his presence here…
She got home and after receiving Melanie’s call, she ate dinner and stayed in her room
“Did I overdo it?” She thought, staring at her phone
Yeah, they now have each other’s number cos the school made it mandatory for them to have it before they left for New York
But she can’t bring herself to call him , someone she has been snubbing and giving silent treatment
Lillian’s call rang on the phone and she quickly picked
“Hey babe” Lillian said
“Baby” she replied quietly
“Did something happen?, I was expecting you guys to be on good terms only for you guys to arrive and I saw him leaving like that even without waiting to receive congrats” Lillian said
” We actually had a fight” she replied
“How?”
*I got drunk on the night of the competition day… Then I mistakenly made him hurt his palm deeply… Actually I made him fall on broken bottles…. I tried to apologise the second day but he got angry and in the process, i fell and hit my head on the wall
“Cos of that I ignored him for that wh0le day and never talked to him , I ignored him the second day too even when he begged and said sorry at my doorstep”
” Did I just hear you say Dwayne said sorry? ” Lillian said unbelievably
” He did”
” OMG!, I’ve heard the story that besides his late mum, he has never said sorry to anyone again… But he said sorry to you and you ignored him?, No you overdid it” Lillian said
” He even tried to talk to me after breakfast the second day, I ignored him and left him alone in the suite, when I came back he tried to talk to me but I ignored him again”
” Valerie!, That’s called selfishness.. he apologized and you ruined everything, you even did worse by giving silent treatment when you know the kind of person he is, he rarely talks but maybe he found you different and talks to you… But you ruined it, just one day would have been enough for snubbing and even one day is too long so far he said sorry” Lillian said
” What do I do? ”

” Honestly I dunno, like honestly, if it’s any other guy, then I’ll have an idea but it’s Dwayne we’re talking about” Lillian replied
” It’s ok…. I’ll see you in school tomorrow” she replied and hung up
She fell on her bed and stared at her medal hanging on the wall….
“Getting this with him is one of my greatest achievements but…. I ruined it… You’re a bch Valerie” she thought…

“Honey can you make fruits cake? ” Robin asked during dinner
” Sure, you want it? ” She asked
He nodded.
” Ok, we’ll fix a date for it” she replied
” I love you” Robin replied
” Love you more dear”
” Keep oppressing this young man here” Philip said
“Jealous freak” Robin said, feeling a little bit of pain in his chest again but he hid it and and acted normal
” Whatever….fine I’m jealous” Philip replied with a pout
They laughed out loud and after dinner, Melanie did the dishes before putting Rob to sleep
She left for her room first to take off her earrings
She saw Mystery Of The Dark Room on the bed and sighed
“What happened in the book Won’t happen to us right? ” She sighed
She kept the book in the drawer before going to Philip’s room
” I thought you won’t be coming” he said Immediately she came in
She smiled and Climbed the bed beside him
“I’m thinking of getting Mystery Of The Dark Room myself, I’d love to read it” he said
” No!, You can’t read it please, don’t” she said seriously, holding his hand
” Why are you always serious while telling me not to read the book?” He asked
“I…. I’m.. just don’t read it” she said
” Ok I won’t if that’s what you want.. ok? ‘ he said
She calmed down and hugged him
“You can’t read it, no don’t.. the end is disastrous” she thought

Next day, Lighthouse highschool
Valerie kept looking at the way for when Dwayne will enter the class during the English class, it’s the second class for today
Darien kept staring at her as usual and Whitney kept giving her hateful glances
“She became more beautiful” he thought silently, smiling mischievously
Dwayne came into the class when the class is about to end. He’s not smiling as usual but he’s more frowny.
And that alone scares Valerie, she kept thinking of ways to talk to him and after the class, Dwayne left the class Immediately
She followed and trailed him up to the lab block but someone suddenly pulled her into a corner
Darien!
“What?” She asked, trying to free herself as he pinned her to the wall
“You became more beautiful, were you injected with a beauty serum in New York?” He said
She kept trying to free herself but the ba$tard held so tight
“Let me go!’ she said
” That’ll be after I might have kssed you” he replied
Her heart skipped beats as he started leaning in
She kept struggling and kept her head down but it seems soon, he’ll succeed
“Please let me go!” He scre-med again as he made to cover the remaining inches between their l-ips
Someone punched his face and he let go of her
It’s Dwayne
She swallowed hærd as he gave her one hærd look
“Bastard!” Darien spat and made to punch Dwayne’s face but Dwayne blocked it with his palm
“I won’t let you punch my face” he said seriously
The palm he blocked the punch with is the bandaged palm and it’s already bleeding cos there are bloodstains on it, it’s the palm that got wounded by broken bottles back in New York
She covered her mouth in shock
Dwayne threw Darien’s hand off
Darien left in fury and Dwayne gave Valerie an uncertain look before leaving too
Valerie stood still for a while before going after him
She knows exactly where he’ll be, the school garden
She went there and met him staring at his bleeding palm, the bandage is completely soaked with blood already…
“Dwayne” she said slowly
He looked back and looked away like he didn’t see her
She came to stay in front of him and kept staring at him but he’s not ready to look at her
“Dwayne I’m …
” Sorry?, I don’t want to hear that” he replied
“I’m so sorry I….
” Is it because I just saved you from Darien?, If I hadn’t saved you from him, you’ll still continue snubbing me even after I said sorry?” He said
” I didn’t mean to..I…
“Of course you didn’t…for f*ck sake, I said sorry, something I’ve never said to anyone besides my late mom before … but I said it cos I thought I really made a wrong mistake but you continued… it’s called selfishness Val…. bloody selfishness…. We were both at fault but you heaped it all on me” He said
” I’m so sorry, I acted childish and selfish and I’ve realized” she said and started crying
He started walking out of the garden but she rushed after him and hugged him from behind
“Dwayne I’m sorry…..”
His palm kept bleeding and the blood is dripping down already
He took her hands off his tummy
“My palm needs treatment” he said without looking at her
He left immediately
Whitney watched from her hiding place and sighed
“Are they dating?” She wondered
Valerie bent down and continued crying…
