CHAPTER 8

Melanie rushed into her room and closed the door behind her before falling on her bed
She smiled widely
“He forgave me” she said silently, remembering the smile on his face
“At least I can sleep peacefully tonight” she thought
She indeed slept peacefully and felt too good when she woke up the next morning
She feels a little pain on her finger
The one she mistakenly cut yesterday
“It’s nothing, I’ll just endure” she thought , giving herself strength
She stood and entered her bathroom, she brushed first before going downstairs to prepare breakfast
She’s done in about an hour , father and son came downstairs for breakfast shortly
“Yummy!, Chef I love it” Robin said after tasting a spoon
“that’s true” Philip added, tasting it too
“I only used eggs and little veggies, it’s called eat and smile” she replied
Philip smiled
” Indeed it’s eat and smile” he said and continued eating
“By the way Robin.. I didn’t get the chance to ask how your date went yesterday” Melanie said
Robin looked up at her
” Date?, I just went to see my crush” he said
” That’s more like a date” she replied
Robin smiled
” Really?, Then I’m really growing up” he said radiantly
” There you go again” Philip said and laughed
Melanie joined in the laughter
“Are you two making jest of me now?” Robin pouted
“At all, Mr adult Robin” Melanie said
” I’m happy” Robin said
” What’s the source? ” Philip asked
“I dunno, I’m just happy this morning” he replied
” Well same here” Philip replied
” Maybe the spirit of happiness abounds here this morning” Melanie said
Philip looked at her for a while and she managed to smile lightly during the stare
He later concentrated back on his food…

AR group of companies**
Philip entered with his usual trail of guards behind him and Kat beside him
“Sir, the Current gists magazine published something about you again sir” Kat said
” I really don’t want to hear anything from that magazine again, are they asking about when I’ll sing again? ” He said
” No… They’re saying, will you remain a single dad forever? ‘ Kat said, entering his office with him
He sat and she gave him the magazine
He took it and checked, it’s really there
“I really need to sue them, why the hell will they always pry into my private life!, It’s always Current gists magazine! ” He yelled
” Calm down sir” Kat said
” Call the press, I’m replying them myself this time around” he said
*Sure sir” Kat replied and left
Philip sat back on his chair and inhaled hærd
” I thought I’ll be happy throughout today” he thought
Thirty minutes later**
He walked out of the company with Kat beside him, the press are already waiting outside to hear from him about various questions
*Mr Albert, what’s your plan concerning your singing career?*
*Are you really quitting singing forever?*
*Your fans want you back on stage, are you gonna forsake them?*
*And are you really gonna remain single forever?*
“About my singing career, I have no plans to sing anytime soon and the people should not expect much…then getting married again …. Ion think it’s one of the things I want to do…. I’ve never thought about it and ion think I’ll ever do,…. women are my worse nightmare… and any publisher from Current gists magazine,… it’s advisable for your company to stop prying into my private life” he said and immediately went in though there are still a lot of questions
“That should be enough for now” he said silently
“Sir…. you’re really not gonna get married again?’ Kat asked beside her
He stopped and gave her a Stern mean look
“Sorry sir” she said silently
He left for his office immediately
Kat held her chest
“To think my heart is beating for that beast, I pity myself” she thought…

After the day’s class, Melanie went to the hospital to see her dad and while doing that, her mind drifted to when the woman told her to see a psychiatrist
“Should I really do that?, Am I really getting out of control?” She asked herself
She thought about last night again
” If I hadn’t stopped boss from coming closer, what would have happened?, I refuse to imagine it” she thought as she walked out of the hospital
“But I need money if I want to go see a psychiatrist, brain check will take a lot of money” she thought sadly…
Evening**
After working part time at the coffee shop, an update popped up on her phone
She checked quickly, hoping it’s what she’s expecting
And yes it is, the volume 2 of Mystery Of The Dark Room is out
Her favorite horror novel!
She quickly boarded a cab which took her to the nearest bookstore
“Mystery Of The Dark Room volume 2″ she said immediately she entered
” That shelve” the attendant said, gesturing at a particular one
She rushed there and took the only one on it
“It arrived so fast” she said
“Yeah, it has arrived since Sunday but it just wasn’t announced” the attendant replied
She payed for it and left for home
She really can’t wait to see what happens after Prince Hades entered the dark room
Robin is taking a nap when she got home and she didn’t bother disturbing him
She prepared dinner in a jiffy and when everything is set, she sat in the living and just as she’s about to start reading, Philip came back from work
She stood and greeted quickly
“Thanks, where’s Robin?” He asked
“He’s sleeping in his room” she replied
” By this time?, Hope it’s not what I’m thinking” he said and rushed upstairs
He met him sitting up on the bed already
“You’re awake” he said
*Dad” he said , w¡dening his arms
Philip carried him and pecked him, feeling his temperature
Thankfully it’s ok
*I’m so hungry” he said
” Dinner is ready, let’s go eat” he said
” You’ll freshen up first” he said
” No…. I’m so hungry and I’ll have to eat before freshing up
“Ok daddy” he replied
He went back downstairs with him and they ate dinner while chatting
” He really can’t keep quiet for once” Melanie thought, watching them eat
Philip looked up at her
“You won’t eat?” He said
“Oh…I’ll eat, not just here, I eat in the kitchen” she replied politely
” No one says you can’t eat in the dinning room” he said
Sir?”
“Don’t act dumb, he meant you’re free to eat here too, you’re part of this house anyways” Robin said
” Oh…. I’ll take note sir” she replied , smiling…
Melanie took Robin upstairs after he watched cartoons for some minutes
She put him to bed as usual and stretched herself
“I can now read my book peacefully” she thought, going downstairs
But surprisingly, Philip is still downstairs, working on his laptop again
“Is he always working?” She thought, picking her book from the chair where she had left it earlier
She sat on the chair across him and opened the book, covering her face with it, she started reading
So Prince Hades entered the room and…
“Chef” Philip called, interrupting her
“Not again” she thought and took the book off her face
“A glass of water please” he said
“Sure sir” she replied and got it for him
She handed it over to him and he drank just little
He went back to work
Melanie sat and felt the need to talk
“I don’t mean to….. intrude but…you sleep late but you still manage to wake up very early in the morning, isn’t that a little bit stressful?” She said
He did like he won’t answer for a while before looking up
“At all .. I’m used to it” he said
“But they say early to bed is early to rise.. for you it’s late to bed is early to rise” she said
He smiled a little
” Maybe life just needs a little change” he said
She sighed, curving her l-ips
” I’m almost done though” he said, rounding off
He shut down the laptop
” Mystery Of The Dark Room volume 2?” He said, referring to the book with her
” Oh..yeah, it’s an horror novel” she replied
“You’re a fan of horror novels?” He asked
” Yes sir” she replied..
” Cool.. mum likes horror novels too” he said
” Your … Mum?”
” Are you surprised?, She’s in Scotland and She’ll be back soon, I still have a mother, only my father is late” he replied
” Oh…so she’s a lover of horror novels” Melanie said, picking great interest
” She loves them so much, she has a library collection of them…then my best friend also loves horror novels, he’s in Korea, I guess he won’t be back anytime soon” he said
” Why?”
” He says he’ll only come back to Paris anytime I decide to sing again” he replied
” Then…..you don’t want to sing again sir?” She said
” Let’s not talk about it, can you summarize the volume 1 for me?” He asked
” Summarize?” She said
” You can’t do that?” He asked
” I’ll do it… here’s how it goes” she said, clearing her throat..
” Once upon a town called Birdflower,…the town is only inhabited by singers who possess supernatural powers, the town has the best singers and travellers from far and wide come to the town just to listen to their singers, that made Birdflower town very popular
But one thing about the singers is that once their wife or husband leaves them without a reason, they lose their abilities and inspiration to sing and unless they enter the mysterious dark room in the emotionless cave, they won’t ever get it back”
Philip Started sinking in curiosity
” Then?” He asked
“The prince of the town, prince Hades who’s also a singer fell into that kind of situation when his wife named Love escaped from the palace… Love was searched for in every nook and cranny of the town and neighbouring villages but wasn’t found…. Prince Hades lost his voice and inspiration to sing, he can’t sing again just like it’s supposed to be…
Then he has to enter the Dark Room which is full of pains and trials to look for another Love who’ll never leave him… when he gets the new Love back, he’ll get his voice and the inspiration to sing back again
He was about to enter the room when volume one finished, I haven’t read this volume two” Melanie said
Philip sat back on the couch and closed his eyes
“Why does it feel as if the story is pointing at me” he thought
Melanie is feeling sleepy already
Summarizing is really not easy at times
She yawned softly and closed her eyes, drifting off to sleep…
Philip opened his eyes and saw she’s asleep already
“Why did I ask you to tell me the story?, I feel down” he thought
He stood and walked up to where she’s sitting
He’s about to take the book from her when he stopped himself
“I should stop being curious…I really want to know what happened to the prince who looked for the second Love.. but maybe not now” he thought
Melanie’s gown has folded in the thighs region as a result of how she slept off
It revealed the lower part of her thighs
He quickly looked away
“Chef* he called
She opened her eyes and he stepped back
“It’s not proper to sleep on the couch” he said
“Thanks sir, gnight” she replied hurriedly and stood before rushing upstairs…

Three days later**
It’s Friday morning, Valerie can’t hide her joy when her admission letter to Lighthouse highschool came
She almost went crazy!
She called Melanie first and told her the news
Then she went to AR group of companies to tell her mum about it cos she can’t wait for her to come home before telling her
Then she called Lillian her friend, too happy that as from Monday, she’ll become a student again
Her uniform and books with other necessities were sent and she started preparing instantly…

Melanie has got used to things in the house and she’s just glad it’s like that
Robin is becoming more cool these days
And Mr Albert, seems he’s like weather, sometimes happy sometimes moody and frowny
But what matters is that he smiles more often now…
And about Valerie’s admission, well she was expecting it cos Valerie is brainy
Evening**
She wasn’t able to go to the coffee shop today cos she feels weak
Maybe her body is not a pillar of stone afterall, she needs rest
She came back home after class and met Robin home already
“Good thing you’re here chef, I need watermelon” he said
” But it’s in the freezer, I sliced it and kept it in the freezer since yesterday” she replied tiredly
” No chef, i want fresh ones” he insisted..
“Robin…
” Chef..” he said, getting frowny
” Ok ok…. I’ll go get it” she replied and took her wallet from her bag
She went to a nearby store to get it and despite the fact that it’s not that far, she boarded a cab, that’s how tired she is

Philip came back from work immediately after she left
“Dad you came early today” Robin said, hugging his wa-ist
” Yeah, I’m exhausted” he replied
“You should quickly go take a shower, chef went to get me watermelon, we can eat it together when she comes back” he said
” Chef is back?” Philip asked
” Yeah”
“And you sent her to get watermelon when it’s in the freezer?, Robin you should at least let her be ” he said
” But I want fresh watermelon” Robin replied
” I’m… speechless” Philip replied and went to to shower and change before coming downstairs…

Melanie came down from the cab that took her home from the store
She payed the cabman and in the process, her wallet fell
She’s about to enter the house when she sensed it
She looked back and saw her wallet on the road…
“I’m even too tired to walk back there” she thought, walking back to pick it
But immediately her hand touched it, a bike sped out of nowhere and the next thing that happened to her is that….
It hit her and she fell heavily, the watermelon fell and scattered on the road, she hurt her knees and the side of her head, then her elbows
It started bleeding immediately
“Ouch!, It hurts” she winced in pains, watching as the bike sped away
She managed to stand up and leaned on the gate, still in obvious pains
Her wounded areas kept bleeding, staining her white gown
She limped in though she feels lifeless but she managed
“I can do it..you can do it Melanie” she thought and held the doorknob
She opened the door at once and held the door , standing still
“What the…hell!” Philip said, standing up
Robin’s eyes w¡dened in horror
” Chef!” He exclaimed
“I got..hit by a…a bike but I’m…I’m ok” she said weakly
Robin is unaware of when tears escaped his eyes
Philip is still in a state of shock
Melanie tried standing on her own, letting go of the door but she lost balance immediately and fell on the ground, losing consciousness
Philip rushed to her and held her cheeks
“Melanie!!” He yelled , calling her name for the first time
She still looks lifeless
He faced Robin
“You caused this!” He said, a little bit loud
“Dad I’m sorry” Robin said tearfully
Philip heaped her up in his arms and carried her out of the house into one of his cars…
“My private hospital!, Fast!” He said to the driver urgently..
Robin kept crying throughout the ride to the hospital…
