💜 Iris’s standpoint 💜
I puffed out heavy and loud air as I fell on my bed, another stressful day. Yesterday’s training was hectic, then Knight took me racing where he taught me how to drive roughly, a get away driving style just in case I got in trouble. I s-cked, I failed, I almost got us killed. And today, Grandpappy called over my new business trainer to teach me all those boring stuffs and codes of business. After three hours of been patiently taught, I kind of fell in love with everything I was exposed to. Then after that, I was introduced to my stylist, the woman that would teach me how to top my classy style; know what to wear at all time, how to match it up and look elegant and sophisticated. I still had teachers for poise, table manners, speech; like how to speak like a queen, authoritatively, personal study tutor, even how to take pictures and wave. Indeed, my training was like that of a crown princess. The only teachers I was introduced to that I actually loved, were the ones paid to teach me how to do all those waltzes kind of dance, ballet, gymnastics, ice skating – because I love it – and the two paid for any other dances including tap dancing.
I also had to learn how to play all types of pianos, mandolin, cello and violin, one woodwind instrument of my choice and a harp. It was absolutely necessary for me to learn that as part of the royal family even though I was no where close to the crown princess or ever going to ascend the throne. Grandpappy insisted because I would represent him in Royal meetings in the future, attend galas and balls and someone would want to test me in other to humiliate me. As a part of such family, I must be prepared at all times so my enemies won’t find a way to identify a flaw. The next, even if I didn’t have a good voice, I had to sing. My voice wasn’t bad, don’t get me wrong, but I never loved it enough to stress myself over training. To make it worse, I was to learn classical singing style before anything else.
The wonderful conclusion to my lamenting is that my throat, my head, my entire body ached from how stressful everything was. I hadn’t even started yet. I just needed to close my eyes and sleep, I had to sign the papers tomorrow after meeting the queen and top nobles of the family, have dinner with them. In other to protect my inheritance, Grandpappy left it under the Queen’s seal, not her husband’s. It was made so just in case anyone tried to change the name, they would have to go through her first. Once I signed it, it would be mine and the seal changed to the special seal she would give me.
Stressful I say.
‘Yo mama!’
‘Oh come on,’ I cried in despair. Knight clomped into my room, intentionally making that noise with his feet just to annoy me. ‘Knight, I’m tired.’ I whined.
‘Not buying it, get your bitchy ass off this bed,’
‘Why?’ I felt like crying.
‘Because you have the gala arrangement to complete, the event planners are here love.’
‘Can’t they come tomorrow?’
‘No, the earlier the better, now get up.’ He kicked my ass. I gro-ned.
‘You, pick for me,’
‘One, this is a test to see how sophisticated you are in taste and class. As the future of RM Empire, you need to know how to throw the best exquisite and sumptuous parties, need to mix up your royalism and modern style. No one is going to help you, come on. And two, if I should choose it for you, your gala would look like a celebration for unfortunate people who can’t remember their first name or where life is pushing them to, I’m a rock star, stupid.’
He has a point.
‘Fine,’ I forced myself up to my knees. ‘But I’m going like this.’
‘A McMillan should never step out looking less than the best, wear something outstanding, fix your face and meet me downstairs in ten minutes, k-sses.’ He said as he chewed his gum, he winked at me and walked out like a runway model. Dress fire, I ain’t dressing a shit.
I dragged my heavy self to the bathroom and sighed, just a little wash to my face and arrangement to my hair and I was ready to go. I plodded out of my room, yawning as I struggled to keep my eyes open. I was use to stress but since I met Hans who made my life comfortable, I forgot how to handle it. I’ll get use to it again, just need time. I put on a warm smile as I walked into the foreroom, trying to act like I’m strong and graceful. Two women sat on the three sitter couch, chattering amongst themselves. They stood up once they noticed me and bowed a little. ‘Good evening Miss Hildegarde.’
‘Good evening ladies, please sit,’ I glanced at Knight who was chewing his gum nosily with his dirty shoes on the mini glass stool. ‘Knight, the maids work hærd to clean this house, get your dirty shoes outside.’
‘Have you seen Saraline today? I’ve been looking for her, I’m ho-ny.’
‘Knight, get up,’ I snapped. He rolled his eyes and dropped his legs. ‘Sorry ladies…?’
‘My name is Maya and this is Philomena, nice to meet you in person,’ I nodded and sat down on Grandpappy’s chair. I began tapping my fingers on the arm of the chair. ‘Should we begin with the procedure? The…’
‘I am new to all this, I really don’t know what and what to do in order to make the gala perfect. I would be really glad if you can show me what to do, all I need to take care of and I will do the selecting. For example, you can give me the list of things that must be checked, then I’ll choose or tell you how to do it, do you understand?’ They nodded. ‘So, let’s start with how do I do that?’
‘First of all, you need to tell us what kind of picture you have in your head for the gala, the way you want it to look like.’ Maya said as she went through her tablet.
‘White and gold,’ I closed my eyes. ‘I want a hall that would have white paints from the walls to the ceiling and onto the floors. The doors, windows, staircase’s banister and furniture will be gold, including the chandelier and every utensils. The tables would be gold but have white sheet over it and flowers, I will love yellow flowers on each table… And yes, the top of the walls should have flowers surrounding them, is that good enough?’
‘Yes, should have a little royal touch though,’
‘The touches would come from the kind of tables, chairs and even vases I choose. I want vases specially made for me, white vases with golden drawings or markings… Whatever potters calls it.’
‘We can call one, he would give you the designs he have, and you will chose what you want to be made for you.’
‘Even the utensils would have markings none have ever had, the plates and cups especially… Would it be weird if I use goblets?’
‘It would give a royal touch, I love the idea. We could add more of those royal utensils if possible,’ Philomena added.
‘Curtains, we would need something to compliment the walls,’ Maya said as she types down on her tablet.
‘I wanted the theme color to be white and gold so I think the curtains should be another type of gold, either paler or thicker and it would have been good if I could have flower vines with them but I don’t know if it’s good enough for what they want.’ I sighed tiredly.
‘You look tired, miss, had a stressful day?’
‘Yes, yes I did, a very stressful one.’
‘Perhaps another time?’
‘No, we have two weeks before the gala, we haven’t even thought about invitations,’ I touched my forehead, hot.
‘One step at a time, miss, one step at a time.’
Yes, one step at a time. I can’t even have the girls over yet.

The water rained on the des**t in my throat, wetting the ground crying for it. My throat was sore from singing too much. I sighed again and leaned on the kitchen island. Knight was busy flirting with one of the young maids, her back pinned to the refrigerator as she stared at her feet with crimson face. So far, he flirts with everything in skirt but is wise enough to never sleep with them because they are not his class. He was a public figure and anything could easily destroy his career. I glanced at them again, rolled my eyes back to the island and sighed. I really needed assistant, not this severe work. If the girls were here, they would teach me how to act perfect just for the gala. Damn, I have dinner with the nobles tomorrow.
My phone on the island vibrated, turning around. I sighed when I saw the caller, it was Hans. I already saved the number, Hailey must have given him the number. I kept looking at it as it vibrated on. Tears flowed down my cheeks, I miss him so much but the thought of him being with my sister was killing me. Pappy and Knight already told me to forget about it, but I couldn’t. The more I thought of them still being together, the more I imagined them in bed. Working took it off my mind, but seeing his name changed that. I even stored his name with so many hearts. I rest my chin on my forearm which was on the table and continued to stare at the phone as it began vibrating again for the third time.
‘I thought you said you have forgiven him,’ Knight said softly, he had come to my side to comfort me.
‘He is still with her, the thought kills,’ I sobbed. ‘I really don’t want her to take my best friends and Hans away, that would break me.’
‘Don’t you want to hear what he has to say?’
‘No, I don’t want to.’ I buried my face into my arm.
‘At least he didn’t do it intentionally and even if he did, he did it for a good course…’
‘Or is using that as an excuse. Violet is more beautiful, you showed me her pictures, she’s still as perfect as she was as she is now. Hans only used what I said as an excuse to f-ck her, nothing more. I am hundred percent sure he just finished three rounds with her.’ I wailed. Knight chuckled as the phone goes silent.
‘You are going to be a very jealous and possessive girlfriend, reduce it because too much jealousy destroys a relationsh¡p. It’s good to be jealous over your partner, but letting it get to insecurity and distrust is what is bad. I know that because I used my own jealousy, distrust and over possessiveness to drive the first girl I ever dated away.’
‘Ever dated or ever loved?’ I scoffed. ‘You only date for s€× and scandal, you said that yourself and you need God, dating sugar mamas is a sign of uselessness.’
‘Frustration pushed me to do that… Fame and frustration actually. I really liked her, might as well use love but I never trusted her,’
‘Why? Did she cheat?’ I asked curiously. Knight being in love was unbelievable.
‘No,’ he sighed. ‘She was just too beautiful and too good to be true. I have never seen someone as gentle and kind hearted as she, anyone as loving and caring. She was a girl that existed, filled with virtuousness, the biblical description of a good woman. I couldn’t believe such a person existed and was with me, it was impossible yet possible and for that reason, I doubted her, doubted everything she did and said. I just wanted to find one flaw in her, just one flaw but there was none and even if there was, she hid it so perfectly well that I couldn’t find it. Minor flaws, yes, but not the big ones to hold her with. In my foolishness, I pushed her away.’
‘Did you cheat on her while accusing her of cheating?’
‘I never accused her of cheating, just suspected all her movement and activities and yes, I was cheating on her. I don’t know what my problem is, I saw a good person who I knew would never cheat or behave out of place, but I chased her away because I just couldn’t believe she was clean. When a guy cheats, it’s easy for the lady to know, but when a woman cheats, before the man would know, it would take eternity. I guessed I believed she must be cheating or doing something wrong that I didn’t know. It was ironic, I was cheating and yet making her feel like she was the bad one.’ He said sadly.
‘So where is she now?’
‘Around, I see her most times and you wanna know what hurts most?’ I looked at him curiously. ‘I am the first person she have detested, the first person she will ever feel so much bitterness for. I still love her but what I did to her poor heart is unforgivable, she trusted me, she did everything to make me happy, see that she was good enough…’
Okay, is this still about me? Knight crying was unexpected.
‘She caught you cheating,’
‘Yes, she did. Now she can’t stand me, she can’t look at me in the eyes without reflecting her hate and bitterness. I still love her, I want her back but with the amount of hatred she has for me, I can never show my face to her. I got frustrated so I dated older and younger people, I really am sorry.’
‘Maybe what she wanted was you to prove that you changed, not go around dating like nothing ever happened between you two.’ I said chidingly.
‘I know that now a little too late,’ he wiped his tears. ‘I’ve been trying for almost a year now, but I doubt it would matter to her because she is dating somewhere else now, they are always together. I will still punish myself by trying, but that doesn’t change the fact that I ruined everything with my own hands. The point of my pitiful story is that you shouldn’t let your jealousy and bitterness for your sister mislead you, make you doubt yourself. Even if I don’t know Hans closely, I know enough to know he is not Phoenix,’ he knocked my head.
‘Ow! What was that for?!’
‘Receive sense in the name of Klaus!’
‘Knight!’ He ran out of the kitchen laughing. I rubbed my head with a whimper, I was having a terrible headache before and he made it worse. I continued rubbing my sore scalp when Montana walked in.
‘Miss Hilde, your bath is ready,’
‘Thank you Montana, where’s Moira?’
‘Arranging your dress for tomorrow, do you want me to order the cook to prepare something scrumptious for you?’
‘Yes, something that would give me energy,’ I said softly. We had two kitchens; the one downstairs which all the cooks worked and the one upstairs for Late Mrs. McMillan, it was mine now.
‘Any other request?’
‘Get me rat poison,’
‘Why? Have this house been infested by one?’ She cried out with a sudden panic.
‘Yes…’ She scre-med out with fright. ‘It’s all good Montana, stop blocking my eardrums,’ I winced. ‘The big rat is 6.3ft tall and bears the name, Knight. Please get me a gallon of your strongest poison,’ she placed her hand on her chest to calm her heart as she breathe out in relief. ‘Sorry.’
‘You scared me, miss,’ he said under her breath.
‘Montana! Montana! Is that you scre-ming?! Is everything alright?!’ Moira’s own panicking voice broke through the hallway to the kitchen.
‘I best attend to my sister before her delicate heart starts to fail again,’ she didn’t say that humorously, she was serious. Montana bowed and ran out to meet her sister.
Delicate heart?
Another maid walked into the kitchen puzzledly, she came to see why Montana scre-med. I thought I told them all that except they are cleaning, they shouldn’t be seen above the first floor? ‘You,’ I called sternly. She froze and bowed.
‘Sorry, miss, I thought Montana fell or…’
‘Is Moira sick?’
‘Ma’am?’ I frowned, I hate repeating myself. ‘Yes ma, Moira was recently diagnosed with a h0le in her heart…’
‘Recently?’
‘Yes Miss Hilde,’
‘And what are the doctors saying?’
‘The doctor said it can be treated now the h0le hasn’t gotten deep, that she needs drugs but the drugs are really expensive. Having a h0le in her heart in addition to increasing fibroid and indigestion problem is too much or her to handle.’ I nodded, reminding me of my mother, I needed to check on her.
‘Is Miss Patty around?’
‘Yes, she is just rounding up for the day. All the maids are about to retire to their quarters,’
‘Tell her I said she should take Moira to the family hospital tomorrow, whatever is said, whatever bill for her treatment should be charged to the account.’ Her eyes w¡dened in shock.
‘Ma’am?’
‘You are excuse.’
‘Thank you so much ma’am, I’ll tell her,’ she ran out. ‘Moira! Montana!’ My phone vibrated in my hands, Hailey was calling. I exhaled heavily before swiping the green icon.
‘Best pee!’
‘Lightning k-ss,’ I laughed. ‘How have you been?’
‘Not good since you hung up on Lee and I two days ago. Are you that upset?’
‘Not really, I have better things to do than think about your brother and my sister. Those things are irrelevant to me right now, so let’s talk about other things that matters like how is my mother?’
‘Oh, she’s fine, getting better actually. I went to see her today, told her you called and she was very excited. I saw the pictures of you and Knight on the Internet? That was you, right?’
‘Yeah, it it. Do they recognize me?’
‘Who would? If I hadn’t seen your real hair color once, I wouldn’t have known it was you. Why were you with Knight? Are you two together now?’
‘Together?’ I chuckled, the tears on my cheeks had dried up. ‘I thought you were aware that Knight is my cousin?’
‘See, told you jealous prick,’ Hailey whispered to Hans, I was sure it was Hans. ‘Oh yeah, totally forgot. Just that Knight is a very good womanizer and Melody’s ex…’
‘Melody’s what?!’ Melody was the girl?!
‘Ex, first and only boyfriend actually. He cheated on her while accusing her of cheating,’
‘Whoa,’ I breathe. ‘He just told me about it, how he regretted it and how she hates him.’
‘Melody doesn’t hate him, she is just bitter about the fact that he isn’t coming back for her, she still loves him and want him to try to win her favor back. Instead of doing that, Knight went out to dating others to feel better.’ Lee, the ever observant girl.
‘Hi Lee,’
‘Hey my love, what’s up?’
‘I’m tired, everything is stressing me out. So you are aware that Knight still loves her?’
‘Melody herself is aware, that is why she is bitter, he isn’t doing anything to make it up to her, try to earn her forgiveness. I also think Knight is afraid of coming back because of Bluey, you know how that female gets when being protective. Melody’s breakup really upset her, she will murder Knight.’ Hailey chucklingly.
‘Wanna play cupid?’ I asked excitedly.
‘How?’
‘I was thinking maybe you guys can come over, I need help, serious “be a proper lady and plan your gala” help. If you guys don’t help me, I’ll die before my time.’ I pleaded dramatically. They laughed.
‘So, we should come with Melody?’
‘Yup,’ I popped. ‘Is she back from Africa?’
‘Yes, but planning to go to Asia, we will kidnap her, don’t worry.’ Lee said with a very buoyant and mischievous tone.
‘Can you be here soonest? Not tomorrow or next though, I will be very busy.’
‘On our way! Hailey, I’ll go talk to my mother while you talk to your father! Phoenix! We are going out to space!’ Lee shrieked as she ran off.
‘Lee! You nonentity!’ I think Hailey chased her. It was silent, I knew Hans was there contemplating if he should take the phone.
‘Are you going to take the phone or should I hang up?’ I asked stridently. I heard a small rustle before he cleared his throat.
‘Hi Iris,’ he said nervously.
Don’t let jealousy cloud your judgement, Iris.
‘Yo, hey Hans? How have you been? Any luck with getting into my father’s system?’
‘Y…y…yes, and it isn’t good Iris, not good at all.’
‘Did he murder my mother?’ My heart started thumping, the question I needed desperate answer to.
‘Yes, he did, Iris. Your mother had a video of something he did, something that would cost him his license as a scientist and put him behind bars for years. She threatened to also tell your grandfather that you were alive if he didn’t return Violet to her and take you…’ He left his words hanging. I shut my eyes as the pain tore through my heart, they hated me that much.
‘What video?’ I asked tearily.
‘I don’t know, but he did say he still had a hærd copy of the video for scientific research. I couldn’t get more about that but the information I have is enough to put him behind bars for the rest of his life. Your father has an underground facility somewhere, he didn’t name any specific thing he is doing there, but just wrote it. There is no location, name or clue. I only got his own murder confessions, a lot of them and a hidden project that caused a lot of damage but he blamed it on his former partner. That is enough, right?’
‘Not completely, not yet,’ I murmured. ‘I need every single information and I know how to get it, I will get it Hans, just bring the one you have to me whenever you are coming over.’
‘Okay,’ he said with a nervous tone. ‘About what Lee said…’
‘You sleeping with Violet, I don’t care, it’s not my body and you owe me no explanation.’ That came out too harsh.
Come on Iris, you can do it.
‘Iris, please let me explain…’
‘Give me one very good reason why you need to explain to me, we aren’t dating, you don’t like me and you did that because I said to get something, no problem. Thank you for your help Hans, you have always been there for me from the very start, thanks for being a good FRIEND.’ I exaggerated the friend so he would get that I wasn’t affected by what he did, even though I was. Violet will never win, Hans is betrothed to me anyways.
‘When we meet, we are going to talk about us being friends,’ he growled out upsettingly. ‘That word, don’t let me hear it again, ever.’
‘Why? Aren’t we friends?’ I asked innocently, blinking my eyes.
‘No,’ he snapped. ‘We aren’t friends, not anymore.’
‘Then what are we?’ I held my breath, my heart aggressively beating against my chest as I waited for his answer.
‘We, you’ll know when I see you, goodnight Iris.’ He hung up. I found myself shrieking and holding my phone to my chest. I ran out of the kitchen to Knight’s room, I needed to squeal into his ears. I burst into his room with a wide smile. He jerked to his feet, throwing a book away in the process. Luckily, the book flew to me, fell on the floor and glided to my feet.
‘Don’t touch that Hilde!’
‘Touch, okay,’ I grabbed the book and sprinted to my room.
‘Come back here Hildegarde!’ I ran pass Grandpappy.
‘Hi pappy, goodnight pappy, love you!’ I shouted as I ran away from him.
‘Be careful child!’ He shouted back. I heard Knight grunt as he collided with the floor. Grandpappy must have tripped Knight over with his walking stick. I ran into my room and bolted the doors, locked them with all the keys.
‘In your face Knight!’ I shouted laughingly. I plopped myself on the bed with a grin.
‘Hilde, please… Don’t look at that book,’ he pleaded.
‘Okay, look,’ I opened the book with my phone in my hand. My mouth dropped, my eyes flying wide open.
‘Hilde, please don’t look, I beg you… F-ck!’ I flipped through it, the rotten pig!
‘Knight!’ I shrieked angrily. ‘Are you being serious right now?! n*k*d pictures of Melody?! Are you mad?! You took pictures of her body when you were still together and printed it out for your pleasure?!’
‘I printed it after we broke up, I needed to keep my sanity, a reminder to how good her body…’
‘You are sick!’
‘I know, please open the door.’
‘I’m burning it,’
‘No! How am I suppose to survive the three years of no s€× punishment I have given myself if I can’t look at her!!!’
‘Mad man!’
‘Bloody nosy bitch!’
‘Psychopathic sadist!’
‘Busybody!’
‘Oh wow, I’m sure Bluey will love to see this…’
‘No! No! Don’t sign my death certificate Hilde, I’ll do anything you want me to do,’ he pleaded. I grinned. I quickly took five pictures and found a place to hide the book. ‘I’m still here begging, I’ll do whatever you want…’ I opened the door with a wide grin.
‘Anything?’ He swallowed hærd, he is in trouble now.
To be continued.
