Helia didn’t like the ongoing storm a bit. The wind was blowing really strongly and everyone was beginning to close up their shops. It was already close to twilight but she never expected the storm to come up before 10 as the weather forecast had said on the news. She turned off her gas cooker and made herself a hot nice coffee to warm herself due to the setting cold

The storm was gonna come with heavy rain and the rain might last a wh0le night. As usual, she won’t be able to sleep without a blanket. The cold would be too much especially due to the rainy season. She placed down her cup of coffee on the table and walked to power off her TV. Just then she heard the creaking noise of her window upstairs. She rushed immediately to shut it close. Just as she was about to,she caught sight of a familiar car right at the front of her gate. She knew she had seen it before but who owned it? Just then she saw someone alight and it was discovered to be no other than Anderson. She got confused and shut the window immediately. What the hell was Anderson doing there so late? She wondered. She banged her head against her palm knowing he always came with nothing but problem. Can’t her day get any better?

“Hello Helia. I want to see you” He requested walking in.

“Just because you dropped me here ones doesn’t mean you are free to come whenever you please” She told him rudely frowning as she let him in.

“I am sorry. I tried calling you but your phone was busy”

“What do you want? ”

“I am sorry for what happened two days ago. I shouldn’t have sent you out like that. You were right about Georgia and your brother. They are both criminals”

“Now you believe me. What makes you so sure anyway? ” She wanted to know.

“I met her yesterday and discovered that she has a relationsh¡p with your brother. They are both working together”

“That makes it obvious the will was fake”

“Of course it was. I almost rushed to Mr Blackface’s office that day in order to lash at him for being unfair towards you. Luckily, I controlled my anger”

“What do we do now? We need to hand them over to the police and convince the court I am the rightful owner”

“We can’t just hand them to the police. We have no proof against them ”

“That’s the problem. There is no proof against them right now but we can get the proof like the fake will” She suggested.

“You are smarter than I thought. Yes. The fake will”

“It is locked up in,side her office. Are we going to sneak into it to get it or what? ”

“Not we. I will do it. I will try to sneak into her office to get it. Luckily I know the hospital too well, I will have no problem at all”

“This is also my case. I will go with you”

“You are a woman. You can’t take such risk”

“I will go with you and that’s it”

“We aren’t going to a boutique or Girl’s guide mission ”

“I didn’t ask you. I said I am going with you and that’s final”

Anderson sighed realizing he was getting tired of arguing with her.

“We will be going tomorrow night. I will pick you up at 10” he explained and she nodded. He gave her a close stare for a while and changed the topic. “Why are you different from how i saw you in the club? In the club you were more like a fun jovial girl but now you seem to be boring. Your personality has changed somehow. You aren’t the way your mum described you to be. You are acting totally the opposite. Just see your dress sense for example. You wear over sized cloths and jackets all the time even when the weather is so hot. You don’t like fashion do you? Do you have to live like a old woman all your life?” He asked. She understood why he brought up the question but didn’t have it in mind to reveal all her secrets to him.

“It’s late. You can go now”

“You are avoiding my question aren’t you? ”

“You don’t have to know all about me. We are not even close”

“I know it’s strange but for us to win this case I have to know everything about you. I want to know why your mum ordered you to abstain from drinking and why you suddenly changed. Why is your brother against you? What’s going on? ”

“It’s a long story. You will have to go home before the rain starts. It will be heavy”

“I have lots of time to listen. Tell me. I am all ears “Helia stared at him for a while and turned towards her mum’s picture which hung on the wall. She couldn’t believe she was actually doing this. She couldn’t believe she was actually going to tell him her past. She never thought of that.

“I am the second child of my mother and Chris is the first. Chris was like the black sheep of the family. He never took his education seriously. Eventually he dropped out of college because he couldn’t catch up. He joined a group of gang and lived a wayward life and as for me, I was no different from him. The only difference was that I never dropped out or smoked. I was an alcoholic and club girl. I loved attending clubs especially against my mother’s will. When I discovered she was sick, I had to drop my old lifestyle and stop going to the club but I couldn’t stop drinking. Then unfortunately, I got my bitter pill and was raped by men. I was in hospital for a while before my mum began pleading I stop my reckless lifestyle but still I couldn’t stop drinking though I was working. When she was to die, I wasn’t found for days. She thought I was out clubbing again so she called me irresponsible and decided I won’t get the hospital unless I stop drinking”

“Where were you off to when your mum needed you most? Why the hell will you leave your mum in such a situation? ”

“I never knew she was in the hospital”

“How could you have known with your sense of irresponsibility. She did right you know. I blame you” Helia frowned realizing he misunderstood her.

“That wasn’t my fault. I was just having a rough time. I was in deep pain then”

“I don’t trust a girl like you. You must have eloped with a guy”

“You are really quick at judging people huh? For your information I am not that type of girl. I never eloped with a guy. It’s just that… ” She stopped. She wasn’t sure of how to let out the cat out of the bag.

“What? ” He wanted to know.

“I don’t tell people this but… But… But… I was pregnant then” She confessed.

“You were pregnant? ”

“Yes! Those four men raped me and due to that I got pregnant. It was unexpected. I never knew they would gang up to rape me. I don’t even know what I did to deserve this. I felt deeply hurt that I couldn’t tell my mum about the pregnancy. So I had to go for an abortion. That’s why I was not heard from for days. I got to hear after the abortion… ” Anderson looked a little uneasy about the story. It looked similar to his though but he tried as much as possible to believe she wasn’t referring to his case. He couldn’t focus on the rest of the story anymore.

“What month were you raped? ” He asked to be sure.

“Five months ago. On April. I was kidnapped and taken to this strange building I knew nothing about. The first was drunk. I could smell his breathe. The rest weren’t but the first was and it’s just a pity only three were arrested. The last one wasn’t found at all. He must be moving around freely as we speak. I hate him so much. He was the cause of this ” Anderson eyes were fixed on hers as he began recalling what had actually happened in his own case. The cases were similar.

Very similar. It was quiet possible he was the first person that raped her that night. This got his heart beat to race faster and his head to hurt a bit

His palm got so sweaty. He recalled hanging out with his college friends that night in their normal s₱0t. He never intended to drink though but he was lured to drink against his wish and due to how wayward he had gotten, he couldn’t get his eyes off the girl he had seen in the dim light. If not for Priscilla, he would be rotting in jail by then. “Why aren’t you talking Anderson? ” Anderson got snapped out of his thoughts. He gave her a weak smile and bid her good night before walking out immediately. Helia got a little surprised and hurt he’d walked out on her story without saying a word especially about the abortion. She must have actually disgusted him with her story. He might not speak with her again or begin to stigmatize her from then on. She felt regret telling him in the first place. He might actually see her as a cruel person for having aborted her child. She never intended to. She never even knew she would thought of it. She had felt great sharing her problem with Anderson thinking she’s find another true friend to share her problems with but for her to have scare him off with a story like that meant a lot. She turned toward her mother’s photograph and then stared at her slightly protruded belly which she had hidden behind her large jacket and over sized blouse. Tears ran down her cheeks knowing she’d deceive Anderson with her lie.

“I can’t hide your secret anymore my dear. I can’t keep lying I aborted you anymore. I just can’t find the courage to ”

EPISODE 14

Anderson walked in as soon as he was permitted by Mr Blackface who seem to be less busy that time around. The lawyer looked excited that morning and he found it difficult to guess why. He had this jovial look all the time anyway. It wasn’t new to him at all.

Anderson wanted to bring up the topic of Georgia and the fake will but he had no clue of how to begin. He had made the lawyer believe last few days, Chris was ignorant about all this having no clue Chris was far note smarter than he thought. The lawyer offered him a seat and threw toward him a gum of mint.

“You love mint right? ” He asked just as he threw one piece in his mouth.

“Yes Mr Blackface. It’s my favourite thing” He confessed growing gratitude towards it.

“So.. How is your investigation going? You finally got the property? ”

“funny you Mr Blackface. It’s far more difficult than I thought. That annoying girl was right all along. Her brother is Way ahead of us both. ”

“How? ” The lawyer had asked in confusion.

“He join forces with the admin to get hold of that hospital. He is actually thinking if selling it to Helia’s mom mist trusted person in that hospital. I still can’t believe the young lady chose to back stab”

“It often happens Anderson. It’s just a pity you are new to all this. As a lawyer I see all this cases everyday. I advise you to please don’t trust anyone at all. They might turn into a demon when you least expect”

“They forged the poor woman’s signature and wrote the will on your name. They claimed you were the lawyer and almost got me to believe ”

“I have always been your mum’s most trusted lawyer. I will never backstab her”

“Too bad I couldn’t recall that while planning to attack you here in your office”

“You wouldn’t dare! ”

“I ended up not doing it. You see, I am good”

“It’s risky for that fake will to be out there on a serious note. You both have to get hold of it and bring it over here. We can use it against them both”

“I have made a very neat plan. I actually didn’t want to include Helia but you sure know women don’t you”

“Please take care of her. Since her brother can’t, she has you now”

“And her man actually. I don’t know him but he will surely kill me if he hears what we plan to do tonight ” The lawyer eyes w¡dened on hearing this. He became suspicious on why he said that.

“Don’t tell me you plan to sleep with her”

“No Mr Blackface. I am done with woman. I will never do that and you know it. It’s something else. You shouldn’t know”

“Do not get the poor lady in trouble Anderson ”

“I will never do that. She is my responsibility tomorrow. After that, we are done”

The lawyer smiled at what he’d said and in no time they discussed on other matters discussing his mother and Job. The discussion seemed so serious with time that they didn’t realize time pass.

Dr Frank smiled as soon as Helia walked in.

“Hope you are taking care of yourself ” He hoped. She nodded weakly and sat slowly on a seat in front of her.

“I feel really dizzy these days and I feel really weird doctor. I don’t know why I keep feeling this way. I am really scared of losing my child doctor. For how long will I live with ghosts fear that I might lose my baby? ”

“Helia, I have told so many times you have to stop worrying about your child. You are perfectly fine dear. These are just minor complications which can be handled with lots of rest and no stress. I still don’t understand why you drank rum that evening. You would have losed your child I swear”

“Dr Frank, I am really scared now. Are you sure my baby will be fine? I keep having this wired feeling”

” That’s why it’s really unfortunate to get pregnant out of wedlock. If you had a husband or if the person responsible were to be with you, things would be more easier for you. You can’t handle all this situation yourself can you? ”

“I can” She replied realizing the doctor was beginning considering her helpless. “I don’t need the bastard to take care of me”

“Helia, take good care of yourself. I warn you. No stress”

Helia nodded and thanked him for the advice. She walked out of his office with an upset look. She had hoped visiting him would made her feel much better about her child and his well being but it seems he was hiding something from her. She just couldn’t figure out what. She walked out of the hospital building toward that garage where her car was parked. Then she recalled the plan she had with Anderson that night. She wasn’t sure if to turn down the offer or not. The doctor had warned her anyway. She just can’t stress herself unnecessarily. Her child life was more important. She would have to withdraw.
