It’s been 2 weeks since the arrival of Elizabeth’s husband and throughout those days, life hasn’t been pleasant at all.
As if following Elizabeth’s orders wasn’t enough, her husband now has everyone of us servants doing his unnecessary biddings. The worthless man never does anything to contribute to the welfare of the house, all he does is drink, smoke and go out frequently to God knows where and comes back home empty handed. Sometimes, he would invite his friends over to talk, drink wine, talk about women and sometimes gamble with each other.
Despite all this madness, Elizabeth said nothing or did anything about it. All she could do was watch in silence as her husband made life miserable for everyone. It wasn’t long before we all concluded that she was afraid of her husband and in my opinion, she had every right to.
Elizabeth hasn’t quite herself lately, she’s been looking a little bit pale and emotional; In fact, there were occasions that she would just unexpectedly faint and collapse to the ground. The other servants thought she was sick but I knew the reason behind her disturbed state, so I did all I could to make her feel better.
There are times when her husband displays some erratic or violent behavior especially when he’s playing cards with his friends or whenever one of us servants failed to do what he wanted. The one servant that suffered the wrath of Elizabeth’s husband was Njeri ; the heartless brute would always find a way to assault her unnecessarily and unjustly either by slapping her or insulting her unstop. It was really sad that Njeri had to suffer this wickedness but her condition was alot better than the condition I was about to get into.
One afternoon, I was alone with Elizabeth’s husband attending to his needs when something rather unexpected happened. At first I thought I was hallucinating but I wasn’t. I noticed my mistress’s husband staring at me with lust in his eyes. I knew where this was going and it made me really uncomfortable.
Elizabeth wasn’t around at the time, she had gone out earlier this afternoon and the other servants weren’t around either. The thought of Elizabeth’s husband forcing himself on me made my heart beat faster, even I was to put up a fight to resist him there was no way I could handle or escape him. All I could do at the moment was pray that he wouldn’t make on move on me but unfortunately he did.

Major ➡ Marian!

Marian ➡ Sir?

Major ➡ Come here.

Marian ➡ Sir?
.
Major ➡ Didn’t you here me you ape? I said COME HERE!

I hesitated for a while before I approached him and stood in front of him with my face looking downwards. As I waited anxiously for what was going to happen next, Elizabeth’s husband sat in his seat comfortably staring at me.

Major ➡ Hmm, you’re pretty! For a black lady. Too pretty if I might say.

Marian ➡ You shouldn’t say that. I’m just a servant.
.
Major ➡ Shut your mouth.. B–tch! You talk only when I command you to. Now look at me. Face me.

Marian ➡ I can’t.

Major ➡ You’d better do as I say B–TCH!!! You’re getting on my temper.

I sensed the mean aggression in his voice and I knew it was a matter of time before he assaulted me. So I gathered all my courage and faced the b-stard squarely.

Major ➡ My God, you’re a beauty. Such a shame that you’re black.

Marian ➡ Please sir can I go now?
.
Major ➡ Didn’t you hear what I said!? NO TALKING!! If you say one more word, I’m going to deal with you. Now take off your dress.

Marian ➡ NO!! I’ll report you to Ms. Elizabeth if you don’t stop.
.
Major ➡ You black ape! It seems that I’ll have to teach you a lesson. Prepare yourself maid.

Just before the brute could put his hands on me, the sound of Elizabeth’s Volkswagen was heard from the outside and this sudden intervention saved my life. I quickly used that opportunity to leave the living room as fast as I could before anything could happen. Immediately I got outside, I noticed Elizabeth was in a pensive mood ; it was like she was being troubled by something. She didn’t even notice my presence at all.

Marian ➡ Mistress.
.
Elizabeth ➡ Huh? Oh Marian.
.
Marian ➡ Is everything alright?
.
Elizabeth ➡ Uhm yes.. Can you get me a glass of water? I’ll be in my room.
.
Marian ➡ Alright ma.
.
After that, I rushed back into the house and went straight to the kitchen to get some water for Elizabeth. While I was fetching water from the tap, her husband walked into the kitchen, cornering me. His gaze was menacing and his presence was very intimidating. I stood staring at him nervously with both my hands holding the cup of water tightly. My intention in that moment was to smash the cup in his face if he tried to touch me.

Major ➡ You’re lucky Elizabeth is back else I would shown you your place you ape! Also I’d like you to keep what happened between us a secret, if you dare try to tell my wife about what happened, I’ll kill you. Understand?

Marian ➡….. Yes.

Major ➡ Good! Now get going.
.
I quickly left the kitchen after I was being threatened by Elizabeth’s husband. The ruthless brute meant every word he said and as long as he’s around, staying here would be quite difficult. Moments later, I arrived at Elizabeth’s bedroom, the poor lady laid on her bed staring absentmindedly as the ceiling fan as it rolled around steadily. Even in that moment, Elizabeth didn’t sense my presence, something was eating her up in her mind and whatever it is, it can’t be good.

Marian ➡ Mistress!

Elizabeth ➡ Huh?

Marian ➡ Here’s your water ma!

Elizabeth ➡ Oh thank you.

Marian ➡ Uhm.. Is something bothering you ma?

Elizabeth ➡ As a matter of fact yes! Where is Luan?

Marian ➡ Luan?? I haven’t seen him since he left the farm. My godfather said that he traveled to Kenya.

Elizabeth ➡ This is unbelievable!! Men are really worthless. Did he happen to mention when he’s coming back.?

Marian ➡ I’m sorry ma. He hasn’t.
.
Elizabeth ➡ (sighs) Well, you can go….. Uhpmmm..

Marian ➡ Mistress? Is everything alright?
.
Elizabeth ignored me and quickly rushed to the toilet where she vomited 🤢. The blerching sound of her vomit was quite serious, it was like she was about to vomit her org-ns. After some minutes, the vomit ceased and Elizabeth uttered some words that confused me a lot.

Elizabeth ➡ Damn you Luan, running away from your responsibility and leaving me to deal with it alone. I hate you.

I really didn’t understand what she meant even though I tried to process it, What responsibility was Elizabeth talking about and what does my brother have to do with it. After Elizabeth left the toilet, I stood still pretending to not hear what she said. I soon gave her the cup of water and then left the house.

It’s been 3 miserable weeks since I left the farm house and here I am in some rat infested house sleeping in a room that doesn’t have electricity at all, the only good thing about it was that it had ventilation and the rent was free.
I wanted to stay in a hotel but Mr. Toby suggested otherwise, instead he sought a favour from one of his lady friends to get a small house for me to stay and she did. I was hoping it would be something better but it wasn’t, even my quarters back at the farm house was a lot more better than it. I had no choice but to stay in it and besides beggars can’t be choosers.
Life has been quite hærd while I was forced to live on my own, I have no job and going out had become quite a problem. Despite all this, my biggest worry was Elizabeth. Throughout these days, I’ve been thinking of her unstop up to the point that I could barely get enough sleep. Many a times, I dared myself to go see her and explain to her why I left, I know she must be mad about my absence.
Even so, I still couldn’t bring myself to do that not with Toby’s warning singing in my mind.
During the first week of my stay in this dump, Mr. Quincy came to visit Toby to discuss about the recent development on Elizabeth’s husband, my sister and I were present as well when the discussion was going on and we listened as Toby told Quincy everything about the Major and his accomplices . Despite hearing the Intel, I was hoping that Quincy would make a suggestion for us to attack but that wasn’t the case. He suggested that Marian should get more info about the Major’s activities and when the time was ready, we would make a move.
Frankly I wasn’t happy about this at all, I resented every minute of my stay here. All I wanted was my boring solitude to end and nothing would make me more happier than to end nonsense so that life may be once again the way it was.
As the days went by, I grew more and more weary and bored 😒. There was nothing else for me to do and there was no one to keep me company. The only person that I get to see from time to time was Toby and my sister ; and the only reason why they even show up was to get me food and supply nothing more. Just when I thought nothing else would change, something unexpected occurred one afternoon.
Here I was standing in the streets of mbombela waiting for my sister to show up with a some supply of food. This was our meeting point to avoid being seen by Elizabeth and the others especially her husband. After waiting for an hour, Marian finally showed up. She looked a bit weary and from the look on her face, I could tell that something was wrong.

Luan ➡ What took you? You’re late.

Marian ➡ Sorry, there was a slight problem that I had to deal with.

Luan ➡ Namely?

Marian ➡ The major. He’s been pestering me s-xually, I’m scared luan.

Luan ➡ What!? How long as this been going on?

Marian ➡ A couple of days now.

Luan ➡ Why don’t you tell Elizabeth?

Marian ➡ He threatened to kill me if I ever told her.

Luan ➡ Has he touched you?

Marian ➡ No but one of this days he will.

Luan ➡ This is bad. Why don’t you ask Peter for help?

Marian ➡ I can’t bring him into this. Elizabeth’s husband is a dangerous man.

Luan ➡ Damn! This can’t go on. Don’t worry, I’ll think of something. I’m tired of Toby and quincy not taking action.

Marian ➡ Don’t do anything stupid brother. Just do as they say.

Luan ➡ Whatever. By the way how’s Elizabeth?

Marian hesitated for seconds before giving me an answer, It was obvious that things aren’t going well back at the farm house.

Luan ➡ Marian, how’s Elizabeth?

Marian ➡ She looks awful. She worries about you. I’ve never seen her so angry. She’s angry brother, very angry. I warned you in the first place but you didn’t listen, now look at what has happened. She thinks that you’ve abandoned her.

Luan ➡ No, no, no. I must see her.
.
Marian ➡ Are you mad? You want to see her while her husband is there? You and her will both get killed.
.
Luan ➡ There must be someway I can make contact with her. I’ll write a letter.
.
Marian ➡ How!? You can barely even spell not to talk of writing. Unlike me, you’ve spent years going to war with Toby.

Luan ➡ I may not spell well but I can write.
.
Marian ➡ You can’t send that letter. The major checks every letter that his wife receives. Just do as you’re told, please.

Luan ➡ Alright. So what did you bring in the basket?

Marian ➡ It’s not much you’ll just have to manage. There’s a loaf of bread, a dozen packet of biscuits , a bottle of whisky, a jar of cookies and some bananas 🍌.

Luan ➡ How did you manage to get the cookies? Did Elizabeth make some?

Marian ➡ Yes., I managed to sneak out one for you.

Luan ➡ Thanks.
.
Marian ➡ Alright then, I’ll be going now.
.
Luan ➡ Alright then, stay safe.
.
After Marian’s departure, I went back to my wretched house and helped myself with some of the cookies and the whiskey that my sister brought, once my belly was stuffed I laid on my bed and went to sleep. Moments later, I was awoken by a hærd knock on the door which kept going on and on as if stones were being thrown at the door. I soon got out from bed and went and opened the door.
No words could have described how shocked I was when I saw the person standing at the door ; It was Elizabeth. She looked pale and angry just as Marian said. I was hoping that Elizabeth would look surprised but she didn’t, her face was dangerously calm and gentle but the fire in her eyes showed that she was really pissed off. We stood for some seconds without saying anything and as I tried to start a conversation between us, Elizabeth lashed out on me.

Elizabeth ➡ YOU RAT!

Elizabeth ➡ YOU COWARD!

Every insult that Elizabeth made was followed with a hot slap across my face, She insulted and slapped me for 15 times before she began to hit me hærd on the chest with all her might. Fearing that she might be followed, I dragged her into the her and shut the door.

Elizabeth ➡ Let go of me, you F–K!

Luan ➡ Elizabeth please listen…

Elizabeth ➡ I won’t listen to your lies.. You black swine. Let go of me.

Despite my pleads, Elizabeth kept hitting me hærd she even scre-med out loud angrily in the process of her assault. I couldn’t stop her, I just allowed her to satisfied her rage. After a while, She got tired and stop hitting me, she soon on my bed and began to cry like a little girl who had lost her toy. Hearing her cry made my heart heavy, I hated hearing women cry even if it’s just for joy. I decided to go cheer her up so that she would stop crying but her feminine stubbornness wouldn’t let that be.

Luan ➡ Elizabeth, I’m sorry.

Elizabeth ➡ Don’t you dare put your dirty hands on me. Don’t you dare or I’ll scre-m for rape.

Luan ➡ Please try to understand, I know you’re hurt. Just let me explain myself. This isn’t what it looks like.

Elizabeth ➡ How could you Luan? After all we’ve been through together, you just leave me high and dry. I wouldn’t mind if you had left me a note but no, you just left. What’s even more annoying is that your sister knew where you were and she lied! I’m going to deal with her when I get home.

Luan ➡ Please try to understand! None of this is her fault.

Elizabeth ➡ I don’t care. You hurt me Luan and I’m going to get even. You broke my heart and made me look miserable for weeks. I bet this wretched place must be your love nest where you sleep with variety of women.

Luan ➡ WILL YOU PLEASE JUST LET ME EXPLAIN?? WHY WON’T YOU JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO ME.

My little outburst made Elizabeth to shiver a little, there was fear in her eyes and she must be thinking that I was trying to do something to her.
Things had taken quite an unexpected turn and now that Elizabeth was here, there was no hiding anything know, it’s time she knew what’s going on.

Luan ➡ Look I’m sorry. You’re right. I shouldn’t have done what I did and I’m sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable. Just let me explain the reason behind all this and there’s something I should have told you long time ago and with the way things are going now, I think you deserve to know.

Elizabeth ➡ Alright, I’m listening.
