Everyone was in a state of confusion and deep thoughts.

Samuel was seated on a chair at a side in the lobby burying his face in his palm with the thought of Cindy in his head.

He sighed deeply and didn’t know when he muttered Cindy.

Dammie who was seated not far from him heard and chuckled.

“Shouldn’t you be worried about your wife? Why are you mentioning my brother’s fiancee name? I knew something was up with you two from the start.” She said to him.

Samuel didn’t bother sparing her a look or even replying her as he just left her side and went to Ellen’s side who was crying like someone’s dead.

He sat with her and hugged her.

“It’s fine. She’d be okay.” He muttered trying to be strong for her.

Ellen held him tightly like she’d die if she didn’t.

“She’s my only friend…I…I can’t bear seeing her in that state. Cindy..” She cried h-rder.

Samuel started patting her back urging her to stop shedding tears.

Philip was seated with guilt in his heart. Thomas wasn’t there with him. He has left when everyone was driving to the hospital.

“Had I know….I wouldn’t have listen to Thomas. This is all my f*cking faults! I’m supposed to be kill.” Philip thought

“Sorry brother. I know how hærd it’d be since she’s your friend. But take heart, she would be okay.” Joy said hugging his brother..

Peter wasn’t around. He’s still in school.

Philip hugged Joy back fighting back his tears as guilt clouded his heart.

“Oh my sweet daughter! My one and only.” Mrs Veronica cried.

Lawyer James was really trying his best to calm her down but she wasn’t even taking any consolation.

“Woman…be quiet. My daughter would be fine . I know and believe I serve a living God therefore my daughter would live and be fine.” He consoled hugging her and patting her back.

“This is the first time ever my child is being taken to the hospital. What could have happened to her? God..please save my only daughter.” Mrs Veronica cried on her husband’s shoulder.

Some other people were seated too worriedly.

No one remembered they’re two that was brought to the hospital because everyone was just worried about Cindy alone.

For the one hour that they have been there, none of the doctors attending to Cindy and Alice came out of their ward which multiplied their fears thinking something was wrong somewhere.

But when it was exactly 10:30pm making it 2hours that they’ve been waiting, the doctors and nurses taking care of them walked out of the two wards.

They all rushed to them bombarding them with lots of questions.

“Where’s my daughter?”

“Is Cindy okay?”

“Has Cindy opened her eyes?”

“what exactly was wronged with Cindy?”..

“Is everything okay?”

They all threw questions at the doctors.

One of the doctors stepped forward to address them. They all went silent as they listened with rapt attention.

“Well…about the patient named Alice. It was shock that made her fainted and it was really difficult to revive her back but thankfully she’s breathing steadily now. Just needed lots of rest and if possible stay away from anything that’d shock her.” He said.

“Okay…how about Cindy.” Samuel spoke up.

“About Cindy, she is fine now that we’ve attended to her. She took something that affects her stomach….the sharp pains that pierced through her made her blacked out too. She needs lots of rest and always be conscious of whatever she take in.” He said .

Everyone breathed in relieve as they digested what the doctor just said.

“If you’d excuse me.” The doctor said and walked passed them.

Two Days Later…

“Take good care of her and always make sure to inspect what she’s gonna eat.” Nurse Mimi said holding a file.

Mrs Veronica and Emmanuel was seated by Cindy’s bedside.

“Okay.” They answered.

“How’re you feeling?” Mimi asked her.

“Very well nurse. Thank you.” Cindy replied weakly.

She checked her pulse and nodded satisfactorily.

“Plus, you’d be discharged today…since the bills has been settled.” Mimi said walking away.

“Bills settled? Emmanuel did you do that?” Cindy asked.

“Don’t stress yourself honey. Be fine first then you can ask me any other thing later.” Emmanuel said holding her hands.

“Thank you my son. God bless you.” Mrs Veronica said .

“Amen. Don’t mention mummy. It’s for my love after all.” Emmanuel replied.

“Thank you my dear.” Cindy said.

Emmanuel nodded and squeezed her hand softly.

Philip and Samuel just left some minutes ago.

Ellen entered the ward holding a bag. She had went out earlier to get Cindy some food.

“Welcome.”

“thank you.”

She walked closer to Cindy and brought out a warmer with a spoon. She opened it and gave it to her.

“I prepared it myself.” Ellen said.

Cindy sat up and started eating slowly.

“How’s it? It’s been long I’ve cooked.” Ellen laughed shortly.

“It’s good. It tasted good. You tried.” Cindy said over a mouthful of the fried rice.

“Thank you.” Ellen smiled.

“Thanks for caring sir.” Samuel said to lawyer James. He had been with them for sometimes now.

“You are welcome.” He said.

“I need to see a client of mine down the town.” He added.

“Alright sir. Thank you.” Samuel said.

“Hope you’re feeling good now?” lawyer James asked.

“Yes sir. Thanks.” Alice answered slowly.

Lawyer James left afterwards.

It now remain just the two of them. Samuel was just staring hærdly at her but she was trying to avoid his gaze.

“Alice…what business did you have with George?” Samuel asked.

Just then, a nurse walked in.

“How are you feeling ma’am?” She asked

“Good.” Alice answered simply..

She checked her pulse and wrote down something on the file she was holding.

“You’d be discharge today since your bills has been settled. You need to have lot of rest and free your mind from any form of thinking. Eat a lot as well.” She advised.

“Thank you nurse. I’d do just that.” Alice said.

“Your drugs would be brought to you. Make sure you take it accordingly.” She added before she left.

“Answer me..” Samuel repeated.

“Samuel…I have nothing to do with him. Trust me.” She said slowly.

Samuel chuckled.

“Really? Trust you? That’s past tense. I can never trust you again not this lifetime again. Don’t worry….I have my means. You’d be caught red handed very soon. Just very soon.” Samuel said and left the ward.

Three weeks later…

The mystery behind what Cindy ate that made her blacked out was still unknown to everyone. But life goes on. They all continued their normal way of life.

Everyone has been living in smiles except for Philip and Dammie.

It’s exactly three weeks that the incident happened. And it’s remaining just three weeks to. Cindy’s wedding.

Preparations has been going on smoothly. Emmanuel had ordered for both what he’d wear and what Cindy’s gonna wear and use to beautify herself and it’d be delivered few days from now.

Cindy also had ordered for Ellen’s dress ’cause she’d be the one to best her. – chief bride maid.

Cindy has been feeling tired and different these days and she concluded in her mind that it might be as a result of the wedding preparations stress.

Samuel has been watching Alice with keen interest now. She had told him that she’s gone for the implantation five days after she was discharged which was a blatant lie.

Ever since then, Samuel has been watching her looking for any signs of pregnancy in her but he saw none.

So, he decided to go to the hospital to meet with the fertility doctor in order to ask her why the IVF isn’t working for Alice again after spending that huge amount of money.

“Cindy…i would be going somewhere during lunch today.” Samuel told her after they finished carrying out an operation on a helpless pregnant woman.

“To have lunch with your wife?” She teased.

“No. To do something more important than that.” He answered.

“Tell me about it. You’ve not told me about what I asked you weeks ago on why your wife fainted.” She said moving closer to him.

“I will tell you everything in details when I get the information I needed from where I’m going to right now.”
Samuel said.

“Alright.” she said smiling.

“Make sure you go to Unique restaurant to eat. Don’t just take anything.” He warned.

“Gosh…that has gone. Some…” She stopped feeling some pain in her abdomen.

“What?” Samuel asked holding her.

“N…nothing. Just some…ahhhh” she almost scre-med.

“What is it?” Samuel asked worriedly.

Cindy said nothing as she just rested in his arms for some minutes.
The pains has subsided now.

“Are you okay?” He asked again.

“Yeah. I felt good now.”

“You scared me. What was it anyways? What happened?” He asked.

“Just felt a sharp pain down there.” She said.

“Sorry.” He said as she stood upright now.

“Thanks. Anyways…I gotta go now. See you!” She said going to the restroom to check if it’s her period knocking the door again.

Samuel watched her leave till she was out of sight.

He was about going his way when he bumped into Lizzy. Luckily she didn’t fall ’cause he held her.

He let go of her hand after she regained her balance.

“Sorry. i didn’t know you were coming.” Samuel apologized.

“It’s Okay. I love it like that though.” She said smiling.

“What do you mean?” He asked confused.

“Never mind. Eat lunch with me.” She said straightforwardly.

“Why?”

“Nothing.”.. She answered.

“Then no is the answer.” He said walking away.

“Gosh.. His body is so soft. Even his hand on my skin sent cold chills down my spine.” She said smiling sheepishly.

“I’d make you mine whether you like it or not. I don’t care if you’re married or not.” Lizzy added before walking away too.

Samuel got down from his car and locked it after which he walked into the hospital.

He went straight to the office of the fertility doctor that attended to him and Alice when he went to donate his sp’rm.

He knocked and entered after hearing a response from in,side.

He pushed the door opened and walked in gently.

“Good afternoon sir.” He greeted.

“Good afternoon sir. You are welcome.” The doctor answered.

They shook hands before he sat down opposite him.

“How can I be of help?” He asked.

“Well…you ain’t the doctor that attended to us but nevertheless, I’d say what prompted me to be here.” Samuel said.

“Yeah. Go on.” The doctor said.

“My name is Samuel Bassey…” He said but was interrupted.

“sorry i interrupted you. I’ve kind of heard your name somewhere. Samuel Bassey? Also known as Jamessey? Samdy?” the doctor said.

Samuel was surprised, that’s his nickname back in school due to the closeness between him and Cindy.

They formed Jamessey from Cindy’s surname and Samuel’s surname.

As well as Samdy from Samuel and Cindy.

“yeah…you’re right. Do you know me? And who are you.” Samuel asked.

“I’m Fred Wilson.” The doctor said.

Samuel was quiet for some minutes trying to rack his brain.

“Fred Wilson? Gosh! Fred Wilson! Oh my goodness….you’ve became more handsome. You’re different now.” Samuel said happily.

Fred smiled.

“Thanks goodness you remembered. I’d have order your arrest right away.” Fred joked.

“Seriously…I almost forget about the name.” Samuel said.

“Why won’t you forget since you are always with Cindy. I can count the days you are always with me back then. And we’re friends before Cindy stepped in.” Fred said making a funny frown face.

“Sorry guy. You know how it is now. Let’s just forget about that and moved on.” Samuel smiled.

“Yeah. Let’s meet tonight after work. We have a lot to catch up on. I missed you if you didnt miss me. ” Fred said.

“Of course I do. I lost your contact then. In fact it pained me but I can’t do anything.” Samuel said.

“We’ll talk more tonight. Tell me what you’re here for first.” Fred said.

“Check your files, last three weeks…did you have any records of in vitro fertilization?” Samuel asked.

Fred wanted to ask question but he decided to ask him everything tonight when they meet.

He got into work checking what he asked for on the system on his table.

After ten minutes of searching he spoke up.

“Yeah….the last three weeks, I saw a record of an in vitro fertilization here.” Fred said.

Samuel breathed out.

“Alice Bassey, right?” Samuel asked.

“No. That’s not the name I have here with me. With what I’m having here, no Alice Bassey was here for in vitro fertilization.” Fred said.

Samuel felt like his throat was blocked…’cause he couldn’t breath.

*are you okay?” Fred asked.

“Yeah. But you,mean no Alice Bassey was here for IVF, right?” he asked again as hot sweat formed beads on his forehead.

“Not at all. We have no Alice Bassey. Although, on that day you’re referring to, we did an IVF for someone but it has nothing to do with Alice Bassey.” Fred answered.

Samuel was staring into space as different thoughts ran through his head.

“What did Alice do with that huge amount of money meant for her IVF?”

“Alice….you are so dead tonight. We’ve got to the bus stop of our marriage tonight.”
