Love and ego episode 14
When Rendell woke up, he found an empty bed. Touching the s₱0t where Claire had slept, he realized that it was cold which meant that she had long gotten out of bed. Turning on his back and wondering where she could possibly have gone to, he called for her, thinking that she might be in the bathroom, but he got no reply.
Yawning into his fist, he threw his feet down to the floor and got off the bed. When he called her again, only silence greeted him still. Looking around, he found his shirt on an armchair near the window and he discovered that her clothes and accessories were gone. Guessing that she might be down in the kitchen and she was probably too shy to wake up with him, he groggily started down the stairs, still yawning every now and then.
He was crossing the large entrance of the sitting room, turning down the short hallway be which led to the kitchen when he caught a glimpse of someone and he retraced his steps to take another look. His brow creased in surprise and puzzlement when he realized who it was. The unexpected guest was seated in an armchair browsing through a magazine which she placed on a knee which was crossed over the other while she occasionally sipped her coffee.
Walking into the sitting room now, he called her name in surprise. “Rhonda?”
When she looked up and saw him, a wide smile broke on her face. “Wow! Finally, you are awake.”
Flustered, he asked. “What are you doing here? How did you even get in and why the hell are you in my shirt?”
She closed the magazine and set it aside, uncrossed her knees and got up. “You know I’ve always be welcomed here and besides, after living together for eight months I know my way around.” She approached him now and threw her arms around his neck. “It feels so good to see you again, Vincent, I have missed you so much.” She said sultrily.
He gently removed her hands then stiffly asked. “What are you doing here?”
She sighed then answered, “I have returned to rekindle our live, darling.”
“Our love? What do you take me for? A fool? You think you can severe all communications with me for three good years and just waltz into my life whenever you want like nothing happened?!”
“Please Vincent…” She put on a sad face now. “I’m sorry. Believe me when I say that it was never my intention to end things that way. I know I made a very big mistake and I gave regretted it. I went to Florida on a vacation and things took an unexpected turn and went out of control, but now, not only am I back for good, I’m also here to stay. I know we still love each other very much and I’m willing to make things work this time! It took me this long to realize how much I love you so much and how much I really want to be with you.”
“You left me hanging for three years without an explanation whatsoever! I called and texted you several times but you neither took nor returned my calls or replied my texts, and the next thing I heard from a friend of yours was that you were engaged and set to get married to some bloke you had met in Florida. What in God’s name gave you the impression that I would want you to come back and pick up where you left off?!”
“Vincent honey-” she started with a teary voice, trying to sound as remorseful as she could be as she tried to to reach for his face but he took a step back and cut her short, not falling for it.
“Rhonda, whatever we had going on between us three years ago died when you dumped me for some other guy. Right now, I’ve moved on and I’ve found love once again, so I need you to put an end to this charade, because I’m not buying it, and leave.”
“In love with who?” She snorted. “The bitch you screwed last night?”
His eyes narrowed now. “Where is she?”
“She left.” She simply answered and turned to walk away to the chair she had vacated.
“What! What did you say to her?!” He cried out.
“The truth.” She simply said over her shoulder. “I told her that we were engaged and by the way…” She lifted her hand. “I still have your ring! I kept it all these years because I believed fate was going to bring us back together.”
“And the purpose of that ring is no longer valid and you should quit whatever thoughts you have going on in your head about us! Now I want you to get whatever you came here with and get the hell out of my house!” He bawled.
She stared at him in surprise then chuckled. “I know that you do not mean that, Vincent. Do you realize that you are talking to the woman whom you spent most of your lifetime with?”
“And that woman was a big mistake and I’m glad that I didn’t walk her down the aisle! Now Get-out!” He hissed.
Anxiously, he started back for the stairs, went up to his room, quickly got dressed and came dashing down the stairs. While still trying to slip on a shoe, he then he said coldly to her, “I don’t want to see you here when I get back, Rhonda, I mean it!” With this, he hurried out of the house, got into his car and sped away.
While Rhonda watched him go in disbelief, she heard a familiar voice. “I’d heed his words if I were you and leave.” Grandma said. “You have just cost him the most important thing in his life right now.” The old woman slowly approached, supporting herself on her cane.
“But Nana, I love him and I only came back here to make things right!” She said.
“If you loved me, you never would have left him in the first place.” She answered. “I watched you take away my grandson’s happiness three years ago and I’m not going to watch you do that again. It’s too late to make amends, Rhonda, you are no longer welcomed here.”
Angrily, Rhonda walked past Grandma to change her clothes and get her stuffs.

Claire sobbed as she dumped her clothes into her open suitcase on the bed. She made several trips to her closet and filled her suitcase with enough clothes that she would need. She just couldn’t believe what had happened. All Rendell had been doing was leading her on all this time while he was engaged to some other woman.
What had she even been thinking? How could she let herself be swept away by his act of kindness and show of false affection? He had only been putting up an act just to sleep with her and she had fallen flat for it. She had been so so stupid to believe that she and Rendell could ever have a thing together.
Rhonda was right after all. She wasn’t Rendell’s type. She was a nobody and Rendell would have preferred a woman of his own Calibre, like Rhonda, or some pretty bimbos to soothe his needs whenever he wanted. She had only be a piece of fun to while away time with.
Earlier, she had called and had told her aunt that she would be coming to put up with her until whatever problems she was going through died down. She was too distraught to think straight and all she wanted was to end her misery. She wondered why she was so unlucky in relationsh¡ps. She either always ended up with douchebags or with a brutes. It was high time she gave up on relationsh¡p all together and live her life the way she wanted it with a new line of focus and without having to emotionally depend on or attach to someone else.
She packed faster as more tears rolled down her cheeks. Sometimes, she would reach up and wipe some of them away with the side of her hand whenever her vision became blurry. When she was done gathering everything she thought she might need, she forced the suitcase close and zipped it up. Taking her handbag, she struggled with the case out of the room, locked her door, slipped a note that she had written under it then headed for the elevator.
When she got outside, she hailed a cab and when the cab slowly pulled to the curb, the cab driver got down and helped put her luggage in the trunk while she got into the back of the cab. Soon, the driver got in and asked, “Your destination, ma’am.”
“The subway station.” She told him in a hoarse voice. Her were eyes red and swollen from crying. As the cab pulled away from the curb, she took one last look at her apartment building, wondering if she would ever come back to it. She was so hurt that she wanted to put everything behind her and start anew. She wanted to get rid of every memory she had made with Rendell and she knew it would all be for the best.
As the cab turned the corner and disappeared out of sight, Rendell who was just arriving pulled into the curb. Without wasting time, he got down and dashed into the building. Soon, he was hurrying down the hallway of her floor towards her room. Much to his dismay, he found the door locked. He panicked now, wondering where she might be. He knew no friends of hers and had no idea if she had any relative in town. As he thought of what to do next, he saw the end of a note peeking out from under the door.
Bending down, he took the note and he noticed some w-t patches on it which he definitely knew were drops of her tears, then with pain in his heart, he read her words. “I’m gone and never coming back. Trusting you was all a big mistake. I thought I had finally found love but I was dead wrong. Now that I have realized that we were never meant to be and that the s€× was just a ploy…” She seemed to be unable to complete her words and simply left the s₱0t blank. Then she concluded in another line. “Goodbye Rendell.”
Rendell started to shake his head. This couldn’t be happening. How could things which went so well yesterday suddenly turn sour today? Just when he thought he had finally found the one for him, he had lost her just as soon as he had found her. She had not even given him a chance to explain and she just packed up and left.
Running down the hallway, he took the elevator, crossed the lobby in long strides and soon burst onto the curb. He glanced left and right but saw no sign of her at all. Devastated, he gro-ned aloud and angrily kicked a fire hydrant. He didn’t care if the pedestrians were giving him puzzled looks, he was miserable. Turning, he placed his arm on the wall and leaned his forehead against his forearm as he angrily hit the wall with his other fist repeatedly.
Finally, he got into his car and drove off to his company. As he stepped out of the elevator, he rushed into the office but fisted his hands in disappointment when he found Claire’s cubicle empty. Next, he burst into Mr. Raybon’s office, startling the man who jolted to his feet, wondering what was wrong.
“Did she come here?” Rendell blurted. He was so upset and desperate that he didn’t care about the weird looks he got from his staff.
“Who?” Mr. Raybon asked, puzzled.
“Claire! Did she come to work?”
“No.” Mr Raybon answered. “I have not seen her this morning.” After a slight pause, he asked in concern. “Is something wrong, sir?”
Without replying, Rendell walked out of the office and was soon in his car driving around the city with his eyes darting here and there, hoping that he would find her but unknown to her, Claire was in a Subway, boarding a train that would change their lives forever.
