CHAPTER ELEVEN: HER LAST RETORT 3

We spent thirty more minutes in the church before leaving. Sitting there, all I could think about was why people bother to go to church. I certainly don’t get it; yes, the pastor talks about holiness and the rest, but is all that true?

Why should I try to be holy when God doesn’t seem to care about me? My whole life has been difficult, and it’s still difficult. He isn’t helping me, so why should I obey him?

Those were exactly my thoughts. But by the time we all stepped out, everybody greeted each other, even people I didn’t know shook my hand and wished me good morning. It was like they all knew it was my first time.

“You too should use a cab,” Arthur spoke to Angelo and another guy before opening his car door. “Get in.” His gaze met mine, knowing exactly what he wanted. I got in, shut the door, and he did the same, turning on the engine.

For some reason, I didn’t want to look at him. I didn’t feel shy or anything of that sort, but these days, the way he looks at me feels like he can read my soul. “Lacey?”

“Yes?”

“You’re trembling.” My gaze looked at my trembling hands and leg. “Are you cold?” Still refusing to look at him, I shook my head. “Are you scared of me?” I still shook my head. “Avoiding me?” This time I nodded without thinking.

“I mean no.” I quickly looked at him as I tried to cover up what I just did. It was then I realized he parked the car at the side of the road, paying all attention to me. “Why aren’t you driving?”

“You might be catching a cold.” He took off his jacket and covered my body. “You really soaked in that water last night; you might get a fever.” Looking at him, I noticed how worried he seemed. “Are you okay?”

“I am. You don’t need to worry.” Grabbing the jacket from him, he withdrew then looked at me. “What is it?”

“Lacey, can I say something about what happened earlier?”

“Sure.”

“If you ever decide to go back to Edwin, I will kill him.” I stared at the raw darkness in his eyes. “If I hear you permit him to touch you, I will destroy you to the point where death is what you will wish for.” Silence engulfed us after he said that. It’s not that I don’t have anything to say, but if you look closely, he seems frustrated, pained, and angry.

What confuses me is why he looks so sad. “I understand.” My words would have shocked him. He looked at me taken aback. “Can we go back now? I’m really hungry.”

“Are you okay?” He furrowed his brows. “You’re agreeing to…”

I cut him off. “You told me to bear with you for six months. I plan to do that.” After that, the drive home was silent. None of us said a word, and by the time we got back home, I opened the door and hurriedly went inside.

“He has eyes everywhere. Do you think it will be easy to get her… I have…” Angelo stopped talking the moment our eyes met. “Miss Lacey.” He smiled, and I looked at him. “Is there a problem?”

“Of course not. Excuse me.” I moved upstairs then shut my door. After doing that, I picked up my phone from my bed. Monica’s text message was the first thing I read; her words concerning Edwin truly did make me sit on the bed, broken.

My hope scattered all over again. I truly thought he had forgiven me. I thought he wanted me back. I thought we would finally get together.

“Lacey, I…” Arthur shut the door behind him before our eyes met. The tears wouldn’t stop falling from my eyes. “Lacey, are you okay?” He rushed to my side and bent down. “Did I do something wrong?” He looked so worried as he cleaned my eyes. “I’m sorry.” More tears dropped from my eyes.

“He keeps hurting me,” I cried. “I don’t know why I love him this much.” He looked at my phone, the message, and then his eyes met mine again. This time he seemed so angry, angry at me, for what?

“Lacey…”

“Help me.” My words seemed to have shaken him. “Please make me love you. I want to.”

“Nobody can love me, Lacey.” He stood to his feet. “I’m sorry, but you need to get over this on your own. I would prefer you don’t cry over him or even mention his name to me, ever again.”

“Arthur?”

“Do not confuse all these for love, Lacey.” He looked at me, for a split second, he looked so broken. “I’m not a man who will invite love into his life ever again.” He moved towards the door, said one last thing before leaving, “Sleep, we will be heading out by six,” and after that, he shut the door.

That made realization hit me. I know nothing about Arthur, not his likes or anything, but that doesn’t even matter. I’m not interested, but if I need to love someone else, I need to get interested in this man.

But he said it himself; he is unlovable.

Shutting the door, I clench my hands. How dare she say all that to me? Crying over that bastard, give me a break. There are certainly better things to cry over.

“Please make me love you.” Those words ring in my head again. What does she see me as? A stepping stone to use in order to cure all her problems?

“Sir?” Angelo rushes to my direction. “We have issues in the downsite.”

“I’m not in the mood; deal with it for me.”

“But sir?” My gaze moves to him. “Okay, sir.” I watch him leave before I sit down on the couch. The whole mansion finally quiet. Closing my eyes, I think about everything and what annoyed me the most. “Damn Edwin,” mumbling that name, I exhale.

I’m running out of options here, seriously out of options. Getting up, I move upstairs to my bedroom, shut the door, and then take off my shirt. I pull out my drawer, grab a pack of cigarettes, and light just one of them.

Looking out the window, I draw in the smoke, feeling the burn in my body. “Arthur?” Hearing that voice, I smile. I must be hearing things now. A knock sounds on the door, making me turn around.

“It’s open.”

And there she is, Lacey, standing right there with a tray and glass cup on it. “Miss Linda asked me to give you this.”

“What’s that?”

“Coffee.”

“Come in.” She steps in, shuts the door behind her, her face all flushed down to her neck. “You should put on somecloth ” I look down at my bare chest before pulling out the cigarette and blowing the smoke out.

” Have you taken a nap?”

” I can’t ” she drop the tray on the bed and look at me ” am not sleepy and am bored ” I furrow my brows at her words, she remain silent, expecting me to say something else, looking at her I could not understand why she is trying to talk to me.

” You’re being weird ” I mumble

” Huh!!!!”

” I said you’re being weird ” moving closer to her, I place my hand under her jaw and lift her face up a little to meet my gaze ” do you perhaps like me now? ”

She slap my hands from hers ” of course not, am trying to get used to being around you ”

” For what purpose?” I furrow my brows

” You said I should withstand you for six months ”

” I did say that ” putting back my cigarette in my mouth, I look at her ” that doesn’t mean we should get close to each other” sitting on the bed, I drop the cigarette on my drawer.

” How am I supposed to get over my trauma if I don’t get close to you ” looking at her, I wonder why she seem so determine to get close to me, is she taking what she asked me to do seriously?

” Lacey” I frown ” I will not love you ”

” I never said you should” she move closer, hands folded and a smile creep into my face ” so???”

” I understand” holding her hand, I pull her close to me, me sitting on the bed while she stand between my leg ” what will you like to get use to first ” watching how her whole face hit up, I grin ” a kiss or just a slight touch of your lips ”

” What?”

” Pick one ”

” Th…th….the…se….se..se.. second” she stammered before I use my fingers to touch her lips, my eyes didn’t leave hers, the moment she gasp I put one finger in her mouth and her eyes widen

” Will you mind licking it?” She remain motionless for seconds but when she was about to do just what I asked, my door slung open

” You did not cut…..” George stop talking the moment he saw us and lacey, she quickly step back and ran out of the room, my glare move to George who lift up his hands in surrender.

Looking at that finger, I out it right in my mouth, fuck….she taste just like strawberry.

CHAPTER TWELVE: WHO SHE BELONG TO

My gaze travels back to George, whose hands are still lifted up in the air. “What’s happening?” he moves closer. “Are you and Miss Lacey in a relationship?”

“Relationship?” I stand to my feet and light another cigarette. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

“I mean, you did say you wish to marry her.”

“Of course.” Looking at George, I move closer to my wardrobe and place my finger in the finger print sensor placed at the side. A hidden door opens; we both step in, and it closes shut. I look at him. “Marrying Lacey is still my plan.”

“You really are confusing, Arthur.”

“Am I?” I straightforward my hand and he places the gold. “Where did you get it?” I smile at it. Real gold. How difficult it is to get such things in these days.

“Answer my question first.”

“What do you mean?” I look at him, not interested in saying more if his words are concerning Lacey.

“It’s obvious you don’t love Lacey. Why marry her?” George sits down, averting my gaze from him. My eyes move to the whole gold lineup. This room always glitters with actual gold. Dropping the gold I just collected in its rightful place, I pull out the cigarette and blow out the air.

“I won’t force her into marriage, George.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“I certainly do.” Looking back at him, I smile. “I just want to see how she will look beneath me. Is that horrible?”

“You’re passing through all these trouble for sex?”

“Indeed.” Exhaling, I run my hand through my hair. “I do sound like a douchebag, don’t I?” He furrows his brows, and I chuckle. “Even I have things to figure out. Just leave Lacey to me. I may not love her, but I won’t hurt her.”

“You might have confused my words, Arthur.” George stands up; the look in his eyes is something I haven’t seen for a while. Those dark eyes, for some reason, look even darker. “I do not care about Lacey. You may do with her as you please, but you need to be careful. You must not let her into your heart.”

“George.”

“I am scared.” Looking at him, I could see the little boy I took out of the slum when he was at the edge of death. He still treats me as some sort of god to him. “I do not want to lose you.”

“George.” I move close and place my hand on his shoulder. “You need to relax. You’re a grown man now; you can do without me.” He clears his throat and nods.

“You’re right.” His tone totally lines up. “I have a few details on Angelo, though it doesn’t really add up to anything at all.”

“Let me see.” He hands over the file, and I go through it. “That’s all?” Furrowing my brows, I look at George.

“Even I find it very fishy. Angelo hardly has any details about him. It seems so clean, but he’s just him. All what he told you about, that’s all I could find out. If I ask some other questions, nobody seems to have knowledge about it.”

“More like he isn’t from this country.”

“That’s it. But then he told you he grew up here; he should have friends or family, even relatives. But nothing of such kind.”

“And you couldn’t find out who he was working for?”

“Yes, no trace at all.” George shakes his head. “Whoever is backing him up is pretty good.”

“That means I will have to watch and see why he is here. But first, we need to transport this gold. I will tell you when.” I look at him. “Just me and you will take it to its next location.”

“Are you sure?” He steps closer; his hands move to my shoulder. “It will be too risky. The gold is much, too heavy for just us.”

“You’re right.” Nodding my head, I look back at the gold. “You will gather men you have no feeling for. The moment it’s transported to a safe location, I will have every single one of them dead.”

“That’s a better conclusion.”

“Let’s leave; I’m starting to feel suffocated.” Stepping out, the door closes shut, and I move towards the window. “I will be heading out this evening; I have plans with…” I stop speaking, taking out the cigarette; I squeeze it in my hands. The burn in my hands right now doesn’t even matter.

“You mean you planned a date with Miss Lacey. Do you really plan on…” George stops talking the moment the sight of Edwin embracing Lacey burns in his eyes.

Stepping out of his room, I couldn’t help but burn at the thought of what he was doing. My hands instantly moved to my lips. What is this? I don’t feel disgusted, but I don’t feel good either. My skin doesn’t itch, but it’s not pleasant.

Stepping away from Arthur’s room, thoughts run in my mind. I have no idea if I’m doing the right thing. I don’t know if I should stop this reckless thought of falling in love with Arthur. What if I’m in for another heartbreak?

He said he won’t love me. Right now, I don’t care. I don’t care if he loves me or not. But if I do fall for him, I will want him to feel the same, and that’s why I fear I’m in for a harsh heartbreak if I don’t think this through.

But then I want to forget all about Edwin. I don’t want him in my heart anymore. Most people will call me stupid for loving someone that doesn’t even care about me. I should stop. I need to stop these feelings.

“Miss Lacey.” Hearing that voice, I turn left to stare at Angelo leaning on the wall. ” You look troubled”

Smiling, I wave it off. “I’m fine.”

“I hope so.” He steps closer. “You have a visitor outside.” Looking at his eyes, I furrow my brows. I’m sure Arthur will never permit me to meet anyone.

“For me?”

“Yes.” He smiles. “He looks pretty worried. I’m sure you must meet him.”

“Won’t Arthur…”

Angelo cuts me off. “Worry about the boss later. We should go to the garden and see him. Hurry.” He holds my hand and literally pulls me alongside him, through the back door towards the garden. Once I’m close, he lets go and retreats back to the mansion.

Stopping, I look around, confused as to who wishes to see me. Moving closer, I stop at my feet, the sight of Edwin shocking me. “Lacey.” He looks at me, cheerful, too cheerful for someone who hates me.

He moves closer. “I have been meaning to see you. Let’s talk. I have a lot…” What I have been hoping to do finally hits me. Lifting my hand, I slap him across the face, my anger resurfacing. “Lacey.”

“You really have the nerve to come all the way here and pretend.” I had no idea when tears began to drop from my eyes. “I know your plan, I know what you want, but to think you are actually moving forward with it.” His face completely changes, back to the normal annoying Edwin.

“Lacey.” He steps closer. “It is true I love you, but it’s also true I hate you.” I couldn’t understand what he is saying. “I hate you for various reasons, but then I can’t bear the thought of Arthur having you. I met you first…you belong to me.”

“I am nobody’s property.”

“But you love me.” He holds my hand and moves closer. “I am the one you love. Why not stay with me, marry me?” It wasn’t a surprise that his touch didn’t feel horrible. This is exactly why I hated my heart and body; they keep longing for something that will only put them in pain.

Pulling my hands away, I frown. “Stay away from me.” Cleaning my tears, a frown creeps into my face. “This is the last time I will…” He didn’t let me finish my sentence. In a blink of an eye, I feel myself being pulled into a hug. He holds my body tenderly while he buries his face in my neck. At that moment, an image of Arthur flashes in my eyes.

I can’t understand my feelings. Edwin’s touch was pleasing. Right now, I feel happy. But when Arthur touched me earlier, I felt embarrassment. No…I didn’t feel anything at all. I was just shy.

But why is it that right now, even when I want Edwin to keep me in his arms, it’s all like I’m committing a grievous sin, a grievous sin against Arthur? is like my mind already accepted the fact that I belong to him.

Another hand pulls me out of Edwin’s warm embrace. I look up to meet Arthur, his eyes once again emotionless. So, this is the man I belong to? ” Arthur ” I gasp out his name and his gaze met mine.
