Narrator’s pov 🧚

Lucifer paced back and forth in the living room once more, he walked towards the window, folded his arms on his chest and stared out with a deep, worried frown.

“Mr Bright, today’s Miss Martinez father’s funeral.. aren’t you gonna go comfort her?” Caldwell asked.

Lucifer doesn’t reply him, he continued watching the party going on by his pool.. the girls are busy enjoying themselves.

“Her father… she got to know him too late, it’s a pity that she’s gonna be alone today” Caldwell said again.

He’s trying to get a reaction from Lucifer, which he’s failing at woefully.

“She’s gonna be so sad, I bet she’s crying out her eyes right now and…”

“What are you trying to say, Caldwell?” Lucifer cut him off.

He walked away from the window, back to a sofa in the living room and sat down.

He pulled out a cigarette from his pocket, and reached for a lighter on the table.

“Sir, you should be by her side and comfort her” he said.

Lucifer paused, he stared blankly at the table for a brief moment then shook his head in disagreement.

“My presence isn’t needed, she wouldn’t want to see me right now” he said.

“What do you mean, sir?”

“Don’t forget I killed her father, going there would simply make her hurt more” he replied.

He took a deep breath, leaned back on the sofa and touched his chest.. he’s feeling an ache there.

“But…we know Caleb is trying to make a move on her, what if he succeeds?”

Caldwell looked anxious, it’s obvious he’s quite panicked and restless.

“Caldwell, Carling and the others are watching her, they’ll inform me if anything comes up”.

“But, sir…. ”

“Alright, tell them to increase the volume, I can’t hear the music” Lucifer said.

Caldwell stared at him, he had no choice but to obey Lucifer’s order.

“Yes, sir” he bowed slightly and left.

He told Caldwell to increase the volume of the music, but he wasn’t listening to it, his mind is somewhere else entirely.

On Melanie.

Melanie’s pov 🧚

“… the Lord is your strength, sister Melanie” a priest told me.

“Thank you, sir” I said and shook hands with him humbly.

Right now, mother Emily, Gabby, Caleb, father Patrick and I are standing at the exit door, near father Reed’s portrait.

People have been sympathizing with us, me especially, it seemed as though they knew father Reed is my biological father.

“We are all gonna support you, we are here for you” he said.

I simply nodded weakly and he left. They are all saying we are here for you, we’ll support you but that’s a lie…a big, fat lie.

After today everyone’s gonna face their own challenges, they’re gonna forget about father Reed and… Me.

A tired yawn left my mouth, I rubbed my eyes and shook my head to chase the sleep away from my eyes.

Gabby leaned closer to me, she was the one standing nearest to me.

“Are you tired?” she asked me.

“Yeah, I’m feeling so sleepy” I answered.

She patted my hair.

“I know, you cried a lot” she said.

I blinked quickly and shifted on my feet, my legs are getting tired.

“How long is this gonna go on?” I asked her.

We turned our gaze towards mother Emily and father Patrick, a priest was talking to them, he must have come to console them.

After all, mother Emily, father Patrick and father Reed were the closest people I’ve known.

“I don’t think it’s gonna end anytime soon, let’s just go in and rest”

“Are you sure we can leave?” I asked.

“Yeah, this is not a compulsory rite” she replied.

I turned to mother Emily, she’s still busy talking with the priests. I faced Gabby.

“Let’s go rest in father Reed’s office”

“Why father Reed’s office? Why don’t we just go to our dorm?” she asked.

I sighed.

“I wanna make it clear to mother Emily today, I wanna tell her I’m not gonna be a nun anymore” I replied.

Gabby nodded in understanding, she threw an arm around my shoulders.

“Let’s go then” she said.

Caleb gave us a quizzical stare, I gestured towards the convent to him and he quickly headed to us.

“You wanna go back?” He asked.

“Yeah, I’m getting tired” I replied.

He nodded.

“Alright, let’s go” he said.

I took a final look at father Reed’s portrait, then left.

★★★

Two hours later….

*… has been sleeping since we got back* I heard Gabby talking to someone in my sleep.

I adjusted on the bed, pulled the blanket over my head and continued sleeping.. I don’t want any disturbance.

Oh, lest I forget, father Reed has a small bed at a corner in his office and it’s on it I’m laying right now.

*Alright, call me when she’s awake… I wanna have a talk with her*

Mother Emily?! My eyes snapped opened and I sprang up, I pushed the blanket away from me.

“Mother Emily” I called her.

She shifted her attention from Gabby to me, she smiled softly when her eyes fell on me.

“Melanie, how are you feeling now?” she asked as she walked towards me.

“I’m..” I paused and cleared my throat. “… I’m fine”

My hair were sticking out everywhere, I pushed them back and used my fingers as comb, combing them roughly.

“It’s good you’re fine, I never knew you’d be this strong… trust me father Reed is in a better place right now” she said.

I smiled at her, I moved to the edge of the bed and sat down, she also sat next to me.. then took my hands in hers.

“I was gonna ask you about your final decision, but it seems like we’re gonna have to wait till tomorrow”

“No” I said.

“No?” she asked.

I nodded. “Yeah, I’ve made my decision”

Gabby came to my side, she held my shoulder reassuringly, while mother Emily raised an eyebrow at me.

I took a deep breath.

“Mother Emily, I.. I.. ”

Gabby squeezed my shoulder, she leaned closer to my ear.

“Tell her, she can’t force you” she whispered.

I closed my eyes briefly, then puffed out some air.

I better tell her now, I can’t chicken out and continue lying to myself… because I obviously can’t lie to God.

He knows my heart.

“I don’t wanna be a nun” I said.

“Wh-what?” she asked in a surprised tone.

“I don’t wanna be a nun” I repeated.

Mother Emily stared at me for a moment, she coughed lightly and smiled.

“Are you saying this because you’re mad at your dad for hiding the truth from you?”

“No, it’s not about that”

“Melanie, you can’t make a rash decision.. being a nun has always been your dream”

I shook my head, I got up and walked towards the window. I rested my back on wall next to the window, threw my head back.

“It’s not my dream, it’s my father’s dream for me”

“What do you mean?”

My eyes searched the office, looking for nothing in particular until they landed on father Reed’s photo hanging on the wall.

They’ve cleared this office, but some of his things are still here.

That reminds me, the box of letters is still in my backpack.. I’ll read them once I’m back with Mr Bright.

I intend to live with him for some days, I regretted leaving his mansion.. maybe because I just found out I’m falling in love with him.

But even if we get together, is he gonna stay faithful to me? Is he gonna forsake his queen baes for a plain Jane like me?

“Melanie?” Mother Emily snapped her fingers across my eyes.

I blinked, I pulled out of my thoughts and gave my attention back to her.

“Tell me, child, are you having difficulty accepting Reed’s death? Could it be his death is affecting your decision?”

“Mother Emily, it’s not about father Reed’s death. Being a nun isn’t what my heart wants, it’s not what I truly desire”

Her brows furrowed, she squinted her eyes at me.

“What do you desire then?” she asked.

“To be a free bird”

“A free bird?”

“Yes, I wanna be free to do whatever I want…” I trailed off.

I studied her, she looked even more confused. No matter how much I explain it to her, she won’t get it.

Maybe I should just tell her clearly, the real reason I changed my mind.

“Mother Emily, I’m in love with someone!” that’s it.

“Jesus Christ! What?! When did this happened?!” she exclaimed.

I shook my head, mother Emily sprang up at once, she rushed to me and held my hands..then looked in my eyes.

“Melanie, what’s going on? when did this happened?” she asked again.

“I don’t know when it happened, maybe it’s on our first encounter, or…”

“But Melanie… ” Mother Emily cut me off, but ended up having nothing to say.

We all stayed silent, she’s thinking of what to say, but I’m thinking of how to make her understand my choice.

“This is not your father’s plans for you, Melanie”

I chuckled lightly.

“Mother Emily, this is what I mean by being a free bird.. I wanna be free to make decisions for myself.. I wanna be free to love whomever I want.. I wanna be free to follow my heart”

“Your father must have his reasons for wanting you to be a nun”

“His reasons?” I scoffed. “Well, he didn’t tell me about his reasons before his death… now I have my own reasons for not wanting to be a nun” I said.

Mother Emily grabbed my shoulders, she made me look at her.

“Melanie, your father had your future planned for you already… ”

Her words just riled me, I shrugged her hands off me and frowned deeply.

“Mother Emily, I don’t need anyone to plan my future for me, I have a right to decide what I want do with my future!” I snapped at her.

This is something I had never done before, in fact, I wouldn’t dared to do it.. but I just couldn’t control myself.

“Melanie, you can’t let your father’s efforts go to waste”

I balled my fist, I’m about to unleash some anger.

“You’re all planning my future, telling me what to do with it! I’m sick and tired of you dictating my life! It’s my life and I have a right to choose the path I wanna walk!”

Gabby rushed to my side, she pulled me away from mother Emily.

“Lanie, calm down, you’re talking to mother Emily!” she whispered harshly to me.

“I don’t care! She don’t wanna listen to me talk calmly, maybe she’ll hear me when I scre-m it to the wh0le world!”

Honestly, I don’t know why I’m flaring up right now.. but it feels good.. I felt a sense of satisfaction doing it.

“Lanie…”

I turned away from Gabby and faced mother Emily.

“Mother Emily, I have told you my decision… I’ll take my leave” I said.

I walked towards my backpack, I snatched it and threw it on my shoulder.. then headed towards the door.

“Lanie!”

Gabby called me, but I ignored her, this place is suffocating me right now and I need to leave.

I pushed the door opened and stepped out, Caleb was standing outside.

“Mel, where are you going?” He asked.

“Anywhere but here” I answered.

He nodded.

“I know a place to help you calm down, mind if I take you there?”

He’s always being quiet, but he understands me as much as Gabby does.

“Alright, let’s… ”

My phone started vibrating in my pocket, cutting me off.
I reached for it and saw a name glaring at me on the screen.

MY DARLING LUCIFER…

I chuckled lightly, I usually find this name annoying but I’m suddenly finding it funny.

But I’m gonna change it name soon, I can’t explain if someone else is to see it…I gestured Caleb to wait and he nodded.

“Hello, Mr Bright?” I answered the call.

“Darling, I’m waiting outside the convent for you” he said.

“Why?” I asked.

He cleared his throat, I heard him snapped at some harshly but in a whisper voice.. I guess he didn’t want me to hear that.

“Darling…are you a fish with short memory?”

I’m supposed to pick an offense from that word, but didn’t.. rather I laughed.

“I told you I’ll come get you after the funeral, hurry up… I wanna take you somewhere” he said.

“Oh”

“Don’t oh me, I know that church rat wants to take you away.. I won’t allow it!”

Ooh! Why do I find his words kinda possessive… I love it.

“Tell your church rat you’re not coming with him, and hurry up, darling, I’m waiting” with that he hang up.

Caleb cleared his throat, as if reminding me of his presence. I shoved my phone in my bag and faced him.

“So.. shall we go now?” He asked.

I shook my head.

“No, I change my mind…”

Wait.. I can’t let him know I’m leaving with Mr Bright, he’s gonna get jealous.. or angry.. or.. I don’t know.

But I just don’t wanna tell him I’m leaving with Mr Bright.

“… I just remembered I have something to do”

“But we’ve…” he cut himself off. “…tell me where you’re going, I can drop you off” he said.

“No, don’t bother, I’ll take a cab” I politely rejected his offer.

He shut his eyes momentarily and balled his fist.

“I insist, I don’t think you’re in the right state of mind to be left alone now”

I frowned. what’s wrong with him?
Although his words made sense, but he’s kinda annoyingly being clingy…why is he insisting to give me a ride?

He wouldn’t he wouldn’t argue with me over giving me a ride before… what’s going on with him?

“You just lost your dad and my aunt’s kinda being unreasonable right now, you both just had an argument…I’m just worried about you” he explained.

I nodded in understanding.

“Well, don’t worry, there’s no need for that… I’ll be safe”

With Mr Bright around I don’t need to worry about my safety, he looked fit to keep me safe.

“But we’ve agreed to….”

“We’ll meet at Gabby’s place tomorrow morning, tell Gabby we’ll go to school from her place”

Mr Bright is waiting for me, I shouldn’t spend time arguing with him here.
I patted his shoulder and rushed off, leaving him speechless.
