✍️ CHAPTER TITLE ✍️: I’M SORRY, MASTER DAMIEN.

“Disguise is leaving… He said he’d leave in three days. And I don’t want her to leave,” Annabel snapped around. Although she immediately regrets using ‘her’ to address Vera. But what could she do? It’s not her fault for that. Because Vera is indeed a woman.

Caleb had a few thoughts on what he had just heard. It’s a usual thing for workers to quit work, but Disguise… Why would he want to quit? Damien has been soft on him; far softer than he has ever been to other butlers who once worked for him. So why would he resign??

“Did he have any problem with Damien? Or what did he say happened?” Caleb questioned Annabel.

Annabel was mute. Reversing it on her head with the way, or how to go about explaining everything without offending Vera. She had already promised Vera never to tell anyone about what she had told her.

Annabel doesn’t want to leak the cat out of its safe bag, but she doesn’t ever want the cat to also run away.

“I don’t know why… But he mentioned his sister, and I’m sure that’s why he is quitting,” she managed to say. Annabel only wants Vera to stay with them.

If a thought should be given to what she’s doing; it would be considered selfishness. But on the other hand, she was not being selfish.

Annabel has grown fond of Vera. Even before realizing that she was not a man, she liked him a lot.

Even if all that she is presently doing isn’t right, she would still have to say it out. What is right isn’t giving her any attention anyway.

“Come here,” Caleb opened his arms widely to embrace her. Maybe she needs some consolation to be alright.

Presently not only is Annabel worried, even Caleb has started becoming sad. It’s too soon for the butler to quit. Not after he has helped Annabel to feel comfortable with him or after Damien started acting sane, which is unlike him.

“Let’s wait for Damien to come. I’m sure he is on his way already,” Caleb consoled calmly.

Annabel acted childish, as she sniffed in her tears consistently. “I just don’t want him to go,” she murmured in sober.

Caleb looked down at her head that was resting on his chest, before he picked his phone up beside him, so he could text Damien.

Is it not just for him to accompany John to Brown’s house? Why is it taking too long for him to come back!? Caleb doesn’t trust Damien. He might decide to do something else over there aside from what has been planned.

‘Annabel needs to talk to you. Come home soon because she’s crying so much.’ Caleb texted and dropped his phone like he never touched it beside him.

“I just messaged Damien, he would be home soon,” Caleb told her while rubbing her back, so she would feel better. Poor Annabel was still crying so much.

Damien was busy talking out of grief and anger to John when his phone beeped, in his pocket, where he had kept it.

He thought it was an unimportant notification. After all, many articles about him will be released soon, and that’s if they haven’t started uploading them just yet. So, rather than being concerned about the notification, he continued expressing himself to John.

John’s success party is still going on. He’s not supposed to get down here with Damien if not because of his love, for his job.

Not only does he come here because of his love for the job; but after hearing what the stepmother has done to Damien and his family, his inner self craves to bring her to justice.

“I don’t know where she leaves or relocated to, and neither am I with any of her pictures. I told you I last met her five years ago,” Damien replied bluntly. It’s written all over his expression that he was feeling disgusted, just by discussing about Crystal.

“Don’t make this hard for me Damien. I know you’re angry and all that… But if I don’t get to see a picture or anything that could describe her where about for me, how will I get to her?” John nagged while capturing some of the things he finds strange in Brown’s house.

Damien relaxed his nerve a bit. John was right, after all, he hasn’t seen Crystal before. He couldn’t have recognized whom he does not have any clue about what she was like.

“I will ask Caleb if he has any. But if he doesn’t, then I would have to travel down to my parent’s house, to find it,” Damien stated quickly then he started heading towards the door, as he was done talking.

“John, don’t let my faith in you be failed. I’ve paid a huge sacrifice just because of this,” Damien warned sternly just as he was about to eventually exit the room.

“It’s my job, so let me do it. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day while reading so many articles about you,” John said, then winked as he grinned harder than ever.

Remembering that alone brought a quick anger to Damien’s mind. Then he remembered that what he has done is what will happen later, his anger is suppressed. And he didn’t bother replying to John. Damien just simply walked away.

“What happened to her? Why is she sleeping here?” Damien questioned as he attempted to rush over to the bed where Annabel was sleeping peacefully, immediately Caleb opened the door.

Well, Annabel didn’t sleep willingly, she slept out of weakness. Only she knows the reason why she had to cry so much, only because a Butler is resigning.

Caleb would have answered that quickly, but he needs to stop Damien from waking Annabel who just slept a while ago up. So he pulled Damien back towards himself.

“What are you doing? I am asking you something,” Damien struggled with him, while Caleb dragged him forcefully out of the room.

“She slept off while crying, do you want to wake her up so she would cry more than earlier?” Caleb snapped immediately both of them were out of the room.

“Crying? What did you do to her!?” Damien angrily yelled, and he wanted to return back to the room, but Caleb didn’t let him.

“I bit her. Idiot,”Ask Caleb insulted randomly.

“Just calmly listen to what happened to her and not what I did to her. Because I didn’t do anything to her.” Caleb instructed and watched as Damien gawked at him dangerously.

“Didn’t you see my message? Why didn’t you get here earlier?” Caleb asked and head over to lock the door, so Damien wouldn’t go in. Since his eyes were on the door.

“Oh, man! I was busy with something. I’m not in for this talk, I just want to know what happened to Annabel. Why would she be crying? Has anyone hurt her? She was perfectly alright before I left the house,” Damien stated fastly, and his eyes didn’t leave the door for another minute while speaking.

“She told me that the Butler wants to resign, and she doesn’t want him to resign, so she started crying,” Caleb answered.

Such news can’t shock Damien, it could only surprise him. And it’s true, he was surprised. But the moment he realized that he was talking to Caleb, he stopped being surprised. Caleb kids at any given opportunity.

“Why would he do that? He hasn’t even told me. Are you joking?” Damien asked unbelievably.

“Kidding? Maybe you should wake Annabel up and ask her. Would I message you just to kid around? Or didn’t you see her pale face because she cried so much?” Caleb argued in annoyance.

Damien stood there watching and thinking. If this is true then… Then what?

“I don’t believe you. He doesn’t have any reason to resign,” Damien replied.

“I reasoned it like that too. You know what? Just talk to him now, I’ll be with Annabel till she wakes up.” Caleb offered.

“Look after Annabel. I’m going to speak with him,” Damien stated before heading off to Vera’s whereabouts.

*

Damien doesn’t know what assured him that Vera would be in her room. It was after he knocked severally, but no one answered, and when he entered by himself, but he met her absence that he knew that his instincts were wrong. The Butler isn’t here.

He hissed out loud before vanishing from the room and heading downstairs, without giving attention to all the guards that were showing him respect.

As he continued climbing down the stairs, Scott appeared in his presence with kind greetings, and he didn’t think twice before instructing Scott to send the Butler into his room.

Scott went in search of the Butler. He knew where the Butler is. He last saw her in the kitchen, cooking together with Smart.

“I’m not against it if you want to visit your parents. Just go and return to work. Why resigning?” Damien insisted.

Vera bit her trembling lips. She wanted to cry presently. She doesn’t even know what is making her eyes teary, but she needs to let out those tears later.

Just as if Damien dreamt of making those tears drop, he started saying some words that could shake Vera’s intention of leaving.

“If you don’t want to consider me and come back, please can you consider Annabel who has grown used to seeing you around? She has been crying because you’re leaving,” Damien forced himself to say.

This is too tough for him to handle. He thought that he was already bringing all his problems to justice, and then this happened… Why!?

“My sister wouldn’t let me come back, Master Damien. I have to be with my parents,” that was all the truth that Vera could reveal. It’s a good thing that Annabel hasn’t done anything that would put Vera in trouble.

“Why wouldn’t they? Do they want you to be jobless? Ain’t you a man who needs to work so he could have a great future?” Damien snapped sharply and his voice threatened to scare her, even though, he didn’t mean it that way.

“Are you leaving willingly or you are leaving because of something else? I can always help.” Damien asked instead of being concerned about the fear he could vividly realize on his man, which he thought to be his fellow gender’s expression.

Vera blinked her eyes consistently until the tears disappeared, then she finally nodded her head. “I’m leaving willingly. I’m sure my family wants me to be with them,”

“Really? You’re resigning suddenly and that’s all?” Damien couldn’t believe himself getting involved in a discussion like this.

If this was to happen a few months ago, he would have never bothered. Does he even care about any worker leaving? Why should he care, when he can always get himself someone else? But this Butler…. His matter is another word for another day.

“Why didn’t you tell me that you’re leaving instead of Annabel? You’ve hurt her,” He asked painfully.

As if going to Brown’s house and receiving a few headaches isn’t enough. Here is he yelling again. Almighty why are you depriving him of joy in Earth!?

“She was pressuring me, Master Damien. I had to tell her,” Vera answered.

The whole boldness in her body presently, is what she has been using to communicate with Damien during this moment. It’s really a tough moment.

Damien sighed softly. He feels helpless and couldn’t think of what to say again.

“Don’t you always relate with Annabel like she’s your sister? Why can’t you sacrifice this period for her? You know she would be hurt if you eventually leave. Do you really want to hurt her?” Damien let out the hardest of all the words he has spoken during the day.

Last night this Butler consoled him and his sister, but now their consoler wants to leave them.. why? This is really hurting him inwardy and he really wants to believe everything to be a staged drama, organized by Annabel and the Butler just to stress him.

What Damien said didn’t only give Vera a concern, it likewise made her feel bad.

Damien was right. Vera has always seen Annabel as her younger sister. She could even sacrifice a lot, just for Annabel to be alright. But this time around, no one is on her side. Even the almighty kept quiet and doesn’t want to do anything to help her.

Vera looked intently at Damien who was waiting to hear what she would say. The more she stared at him, the faster the remembrance of everything rushed to her head.

Starting from when she decided of doing anything to be with Damien. Then the moment, she decided to live with him. How she started creating bonds with him. Including those moments that couldn’t be forgotten.

All of them flashed before her eyes. Period of which Damien resented her. Thinking back to how she once hated Annabel because she thought of her as another girl in Damien’s life.

The time goes faster than anyone’s imagination. It’s so hard to believe that everything happened within two months. How many sweet memories of them should she think about!?

Vera was restless and by the time she was done remembering everything that crossed her thoughts, the only thing she could say to him was another difficult words.

“I’ve made a lot of sacrifices for my loved ones. If not for the sacrifice, I wouldn’t leave my family to live here with you,”

“I just wished that I could stay a little longer for my sacrifice to be accepted, but almighty seems not to have everything planned along with me.”
“I’m sorry, Master Damien…”
