Dear Diary,

‘Beauty has so many forms and I think the most beautiful thing is confidence and loving yourself.’ Kiesza
****

It’s a bright Saturday afternoon!
I have been booked to have my first book signing aside from that I will be addressing a number of young women on the importance of self love in relation to my book ‘Perfect Imperfections.’

I am nervous about standing a front of a crowd this is the first time I will be doing this.

I arrive at the venue alongside Angie and Sherister at 10, Koko couldn’t come, she traveled for a church function but she called to wish me well.

There are posters of my book displayed on the wall and my signing table has been set up in the front.
‘Hey there,’ Jessie says, she embraces me and gives me a peck on the cheek.
‘Hey.’
‘You look amazing.’
‘You look good too.’
‘My girls,’ she says to Angie and Sherister smilingly.
‘How are you?’ Angie asks
‘I am good.’
‘You guys feel free to sit in the front roll we should be starting the soon.’
‘Thanks.’
Jessie org-nized this function too, how can I ever thank her for all she has done for me. She is such a sweet and kind person.

‘I will join you guys soon,’ she smiles before she walks out.
We walk to the front roll and settle down I can’t help but feel like people are staring at me.
‘Just calm down lovey,’ Angie whispers
I smile at her she has been a great friend- a great support system. What can I ever do without her?
We wait a few more minutes and the program commences.
Jessie walks to the front and talks for a while about me and the book then she calls me to the front.
I take a deep breath and slowly walk to the front. People stare at me in awe while others clap for me as I walk to the podium.

I clear my throat, ‘Good afternoon I am honored to be here with you all. As you all know I am Zendaya Mathjis, I am the brand ambassador for the Global Women Empowerment Initiative. I am an author too. I am here specifically for my book, ‘Perfect Imperfections,’ I pause
I am really nervous, my heart is beating fast and hærd, my palms are sweaty.

Jessie walks over to me a few minutes later and pours me a glass of cold which I drink all at once.
‘Just breathe,’ she whispers.
I smile.
‘I will be telling you a bit about myself and the book then I’ will answer a few questions before heading to the signing table.’

‘I grew up being taunted by my unusual appearance. I was the girl that sat in the corner in every class, the girl they all picked on when they were bored, the girl they only talked to when they needed favours, for years I was made fun of for how I looked…..,’ I start
I go on to talk about how my mother abandoned me and how that affected my life, I also talk about the struggles I faced because I believed every word everyone else said.

‘I know when you grow up being called ugly, it’s a scar you carry with you for most of your life but here’s the deal, you can either turn that scar into something that makes you despise the world for treating you like they do or you can turn into something beautiful.’

People listen silently as I talk, I can see some are even taking notes, I am not nervous anymore.

‘Perfect imperfections’ is about seeing yourself through God’s eyes because only he can set the standards of beauty. It is about letting go of what others think of you and affirming the beauty you possess. It’s about gazing at yourself and going beyond past your reflection because what we call flaws often times are the rare aspects that make us fascinating and wonderful.’

When I finish talking the audience stands up and applauds me, I am overwhelmed with emotions, I didn’t expect to have this much support.

Jessie rushed over to me, ‘You did good,’ she embraces me
I blink away the tears, ‘Thank you.’
I always wanted to speak to a group of women but I never thought I had it in me, my auntie would always say it was a farfetched dream- See me now standing tall and bodily living my dream.

‘We will take a few questions,’ Jessie tells the crowd.
She points at one of the ladies sitting in the fifth roll.
‘Yes.’
‘Firstly I just want to say you are beautiful…’
‘Thank you,’ I smile.
‘My daughter get’s bullied quiet a lot at school because she has a skin condition, this has been affecting her academics how best can I help her?’
‘Tell her everyday she is beautiful despite being different from the rest, she needs you now more than you can never imagine.’
We take a few more questions before I step out and head to the table.
A line has already been formed in front of the signing table.
I am smile and engage the readers in conversations as I sign the books, it takes me almost two hours to get done.
‘My feet are killing me,’ I yawn as we step outside.
‘You did great,’ Jessie says
‘Yes, it was so good,’ Angie smiles
‘Thank you.’
We get to the car park.
‘Jessie thank you so much, how can I ever repay you?’
She smiles, ‘When you make it, find a young trouble woman to empower, that will be all the payment I will ever need.’
‘You are a special gem,’ Sherister says
We talk for a few minutes before she drives off.
‘So can we go home now?’ I ask Sherister and Angie are reluctant to get going.
‘Well.’
‘What?’
Sherister clears her throat.
A slight smile plays on Angie’s l-ips.
‘What are you people up to?’
Sherister points at something behind me, I turn around and come face to face with Elijah.
I stare at him in his shorts and polo T-shirt.

So from the time Mel and I broke up, Elijah and I haven’t been in contact, I told him I needed time to figure out what I really wanted and I gave him to time to think things through.

‘Elijah,’ I say
He smiles, Hey.’
‘Hey.’
‘I think this is our queue to leave,’ Sherister pulls Angie’s hand.
‘Meaning?’
‘You guys need to talk.’
They get into the car and wave at us, before I can protest they drive off.
For a moment Elijah and I stare at each other.
I open my mouth to speak but no words come out.
He looks at me with warm eyes, ‘I miss you.’
‘I miss you too,’ I respond.
‘Babe I know I did you wrong, I should have fought for us, I should have found a better way of dealing with stuff I know but please forgive me, I love you, I will go crazy if I have to spend another day without you.’
My heart melts, I know he is being sincere, I guess he deserves a second chance.
‘Do I stand a chance,’ he asks holding my hand.
I can say no to him but my heart wants him.
‘I forgive you. I am ready to start afresh with you but I want honesty and transparency don’t hurt me all in the name of protecting me, if need arises talk to me and let’s find a solution together- We are a team Babe.’

‘I promise to be true to you. I will never hurt you,’ he smiles
‘I love you.’
‘I love you too.’
He pulls me in his arms then he lowers his mouth into mine and k-sses me gently.
Joy and happiness flow through me from the top of my head to the tip of my toes.
Here’s to many wonderful years together, here’s to self love and self worth. Here’s to living life to the fullest, here’s positivity.

*Ends* …..
*With Love Zendaya*
