Chapter 11

(Cacophony of heartbeats….)

Aster’s mouth dropped open slightly as he took in Cynthia’s fuming form. He struggled to find words, but none came. Her frowning features softened lightly upon sighting him, but the change was so minute he had almost missed it.

She stared at him, her mouth pressed down in a firm line.

“Are you going to stand and stare at me?”

Aster rubbed his red hair sheepishly, and opened the door fully for her. She stormed into the house, and he could practically hear her footsteps from how hรฆrd she was stomping.

She saw his mom and her features quickly lightened into a smile, as she greeted her pleasantly. She then turned to Aster again.

“Where is he?”

“In his room. Down the hall. First door on the left.”

She turned around and began to storm down the hall. His mom popped a cherry in her mouth. “My, the house is bustling today.” She Said, giving Aster a cheeky grin.

He smiled back. “She’s Chan’s manager.”

“I figured it was something like that. She obviously couldn’t be an ex, to have come barging in like that.”

Aster laughed a little to forcefully at his mother’s joke. He stared down the hall, wondering if he should go down there and be present at what he was sure would he a massacre on both sides.

๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ

Chan lay in bed, staring at the ceiling tiles. It had become an unwelcome habit of his ever since the day Lee had gotten hurt.

He never had much to do, and when he was done with his daily routine, he would find himself bored out of his mind, and he couldn’t go outside because of the ruckus that had erupted as a result of what had happened, so he was just stick at home all day.

He didn’t think he would ever understand how Lee could do this every day and not go mad.

His bedroom door swung open violently, and he sat up in surprise, about to yell at whoever it was, when his eyes wยกdened in shock upon actually sighting the person.

“C-Cynthia?”

She looked and visibly furious. And he could feel the malice coming from her as well.

“You had one job. Stay out of sight. Fix your voice. Whatever. Was that too hรฆrd for you?”

He almost sighed in disappointment. Of course she hadn’t come to see him. This was about what had happened.

He relaxed nonchalantly on the bed. “What happened was not my fault.”

He saw her hands ball into fists.

“Of course. What did I expect from you? An apology? Do you know how bad I’ve been hounded back home because of your behavior? How long do you think it will take before those reporters find out this is exactly where you’re staying?”

“You coming here alone is a potential lead, you know that right?”

“Yeah well, unlike you I cover my tracks.”

He folded his arms stubbornly, then looked her over. She had trimmed her hair, and had gotten leaner too. Pftt. How stupid could she be not to take proper care of herself?

She sighed, then ran her hands through her hair.

“So, how are you planning to fix this?”

His eyes wยกdened, and not from what she said, but for the fact that who came to his minds at his mind at her words was Lee.

“What does that mean? Isn’t that your job?”

“Oh, so you know that there’s something to be fixed? If you can figure that much out, why can’t you recognize your part in the wh0le saga?”

“Cynthia, how is getting me to admit anything going to help fix this situation in any way?”

She narrowed her eyes at him, then sighed. “I feel like I’m talking to brick wall. You’d think I’d have learnt my lesson by now that the wall won’t listen.”

Chan stayed silent, and didn’t bother replying her statement.

She sighed again. “You know, in the worst case scenario, you’re going to have to leave this Island, right?”

Chan’s eyes wยกdened. “What?”

“You heard me. Once people find out where you live, not only will you be at risk, but so will Aster and his family. You can’t stay. You would have to leave before things get too chaotic.”

He sprang to his feet.

“I can’t leave! Not until I…..” His words died in his throat.

Not until he….what?

Cynthia tapped her hands on her chin, unable to hide the smile that was forming on her face.

“Until you what?”

His shoulders slumped. “I….I don’t know.”

Cynthia sighed. “Well, I can’t wait for you to figure that out. If I’m not able to get hold of the situation by the end of this week, you’re out of here.”

“You don’t get to decide what I can and cannot do Cynthia.”

“Well, I wouldn’t have to if you had kept your end of the bargain and stayed under the radar!”

“That’s impossible. Where there’s people, I couldn’t possibly stay under the radar.”

“If you inflate your ego any higher, you’ll bust the roof.”

He grit his teeth at her words.

“Why are you so adamant about staying anyway? Is this about the girl in the video?”

Chan’s rolled his eyes. “And what makes you think that?”

“Well, from what I watched,it looked like you were defending her.”

“So?”

Cynthia rubbed her eyes, then smiled at him. “Forget I asked.”

She turned round and began to head out the room.

“If you really valued the people and the time you were spending here, you wouldn’t have done something that would endanger it. You need to realize that you can’t break something and expect it to stay pristine.”

Chan grit his teeth. “I didn’t do anything…..” He couldn’t finish his sentence.

Cynthia sighed again and walked away.

๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ

Aster stood up the minute he saw Cynthia walking out of the corridor. He felt himself feeling extremely unnerved at the fact that she was smiling.

“How did it go?” He asked softly.

She sighed and smiled at him. “How do you think?”

“Honestly, I expected much more yelling. Did you kill him?”

Cynthia chuckled at his joke, and sat beside him. “As a matter of fact, I didn’t.”
“Why are you so happy?”

Her face softened.

“Because I’ve never seen him stand up for someone before, in a long time, to be more precise. I’ve never seen him risk himself for someone else.”

“And that makes you happy? It wasn’t a very smart move.”

Cynthia laughed heartily. “It really wasn’t. But since when have either of us known Chan to be or act smart? At least this time he acted foolishly for someone else. It makes me so happy. The rational part of me wants him to get his voice back and return back to his old life, but….the illogical part of me wants him to stay here longer. I told you this place would change him. I told you that you were also going to play a part in that.”

Aster rubbed the back of his neck shyly.

“I… haven’t done anything Cynthia. If anything, you have my sister to thank. She’s the only one I’ve seen evoke any unfamiliar emotions out of him.”

“I’m guessing she was the one in the video?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, you’re still playing a huge part, Aster, whether you want to admit it or not. You’re here for him, and not giving up on him, and that alone is almost ninety percent of a part. You’re stronger than me when it comes to Chan.”

“What? What do you mean? I’ve seen you stand by him for so many years! You never left him, no matter how badly he treated you!”

“Yes, but I’ve thought about abandoning him more times than I would like to admit.”

“Haven’t we all? Some people have had friends, or family members, who have made things difficult for them, and probably wouldn’t like to admit that they had also thought of abandoning them as well! But you braved through those thoughts and stayed. That makes you an absolutely strong woman!”

Cynthia stared in mild shock as Aster tried to defend her with so much conviction.

She bowed her head and smiled, and that seemed to snap him out of his trance.

“Uh…. I….”

“I’m happy you see me that way, Aster.”

Aster was quiet. “I’m sorry.” He muttered after a while.

Cynthia chuckled. “For what?”

“That was a bit….too much.”

“Really? But I liked it…. A lot actually. In fact, I’m finding myself liking more and more things about you.”

His face heated up at her honesty. But before he could say anything, she stood up.

“Are you leaving?”

“Yeah.”

“S-stay for dinner.”

She smiled again, her eyes softening.

“I’d love to, but if I get too relaxed, I might lose my guard. You know I have to be alert to make sure I wasn’t followed here.”

“Oh. Right.”

Cynthia bit her lip, forcing herself not to giggle at his obvious disappointment.

“Try not to look so disappointed, Aster.”

He chuckled lightly, standing to his feet. “But pouting like that always works with all the ladies.”

“Ha. That’s the last thing I’d expect to come out of your mouth.”

They both chuckled lightly, and Cynthia found herself enjoying their conversation a lot more than she wanted. What was she doing?

It… didn’t feel right or needful.

As she reached the front door, she hesitated.

“Uh…will you call me when you get home?”

She rose her head, and smiled. “Yes. I will.”

Aster smiled brightly, and that was enough convincing for her.

๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ

Chan paced up and down in his room, unable to get he and Cynthia’s conversation out of his head. He sighed, opened his bedroom door, and found himself in front of Lee’s bedroom.

He ran his hands through his head in frustration, Wondering just what exactly he was planning to do.

At least, let him see that she was okay. It had been almost two weeks, and she hadn’t step foot out of her bedroom.

His hand hovered over the door, then he gro-ned and knocked sharply on it.

There was no answer at first, so he knocked again.

“Go away.” He heard a raspy voice yell from the other side.

He grit his teeth. How could she be so rude when she didn’t even know who was at the door?

“Would you open up?”

“Chan?”

“Who do you think?”

There was another silence, then some shuffling, and the door opened slightly. Her hair was in a mess, and he rbangs had grown so long they were almost covering half her face.

He sighed to himself.

“What do you want?”

Ha. If only he knew as well.

“I…came to check on you. I haven’t seen you in almost two weeks.”

“Well now you’ve seen me.” She moved to slam the door shut, but he stuck his foot in the way, stopping her.

“Are you planning on never leaving your room again?”

“What do you care?” She pulled the door against his leg, but he was stronger.

He scratched his head. If only he could get rid this stupid feeling of guilt that wouldn’t leave him alone.

“Look, just listen to me for a second.”

She stopped pulling, and stared up at him.

“About that day, I’m….sorry. I shouldn’t have left you alone.” Was he apologizing right now because he was truly sorry, or because he wanted to ease his conscience?

Ah, why the hell did that Matter anyway?

Lee’s head was bowed, and she was silent.

“Hey. Hey. Did you hear me?”

He bent his head to see her face, and was surprised when he saw her cheeks bright red, with a panicked and confused look on her face.

Was she…. blushing?

Before he could get a word in, they both heard a plate clatter to the ground behind them. Chan turned around, and saw Aster standing a few meters behind him, staring at him like he had just seen him sprout horns.

“Did…..did I just hear you apologize to someone?”

Chan bit his lip in anger, then stormed into his room and slammed the door.

Lee followed suit not long after.

Aster continued to stare in shock, now left all alone in the corridor.

What the heck had he just witnessed?

Had hell frozen over?
