Chapter 19 πŸ€πŸ€ ffifif

(You are the lyrics in my song….)

It was dark. The sun had long set, taking along with it the energy and agility of most of the people in the small bungalow. After Aster’s wh0le rant of the k-ss, everyone had retired to their rooms to do their own before bed rituals, and Chan had just concluded another singing practice in his own room. It was still early in the night though, and he still didn’t feel that sleepy. He decided to go out and see if there was anything good on the TV that he could watch. The Petersons rarely watched TV, and after four months of living with them, he had begun to feel as if the LED television that sat in their living room was just for show.

He quietly opened his bedroom door, but the noise the door would’ve made was nothing compared to what was coming out of Lee’s room. She was still practicing, even this late into the night. He smiled to himself. Well, if she wasn’t practicing this hΓ¦rd, then he would have been disappointed.

He made his way lazily to the living room, stopping to grab one of Lee’s chocolate milks out of the fridge. He never did go out to get his own, and we’ll, he didn’t think she would mind much that he was stealing hers. He imagined her pouting and trying to argue with him, and a blush formed on his face.

Okay scratch that,he would actually be excited to see her try to get mad at him.

He re entered the living room and saw Aster already seated on the couch, the TV playing quietly before him, while he stared at his phone.

Chan quietly sat beside him, grabbing the TV remote, causing the red head to look up in slight alarm.

“Geez Chan. You scared the bejeezus out of me.”

Chan shrugged and turned up the volume on the TV, before flicking between the channels.

“You’ve been engrossed in your phone all night. Something wrong?”

Aster smiled cheekily at him, before turning a worried look to the phone in his hand. “It’s just…. Cynthia called me earlier today, and I tried calling back severally but she didn’t answer. She eventually texted me back a few hours ago, but something about her reply doesn’t really sit well with me. I guess I’m just being overly worried right?”

Chan appraised the male quietly, taking note of the worried, forlorn look in his eyes, and sighed to himself.

“You sure care about her don’t you?”

Aster scoffed. “Don’t you?”

Chan popped the straw into the packet of chocolate milk and into his mouth, sipping quietly. Aster’s question wasn’t really one that required an answer.

Said make relaxed on the couch and began to stare blankly at the television screen.

“I’m going to be frank with you, Chan. And I want you to think about what you’re going to say carefully. Do you have feelings for Lee?”

Chan almost choked on his chocolate milk. Aster waited patiently for his reply.

Chan thought about the question.

“If this is because I k-ssed her, then….”

“It’s not just that. This isn’t a trivial matter, Chan.”

“I know that. And I….I do care about her. I do.”

Aster smiled. “I’m sorry. You might still be figuring out your feelings. I shouldn’t push you. I should know that doing things like this could backfire in so many ways.”

Chan frowned. “You caused this you know? Telling me that she had feelings for me is what caused me to….”

“k-ss her?” Aster Chuckled as Chan shut his mouth.

“Yeah, I bet even you can hear how stupid that sounds.” He added again.

Chan slumped into the couch, finishing the last remnants of the chocolate milk and crumpling he packet.

“I don’t want to hurt her. And I feel bad as hell when I do. I think about her a lot, and most of the time, remembering her words when I’m stressed out helps me calm down more than flicking my guitar pick between my fingers. I feel like I can open up to her, and ….she makes me want to be a better person.”

Aster Chuckled again. “What is this? Doctor Phil?”

Chan shot him a glare. “You asked me how I felt, and now you’re teasing me?”

Aster smiled fondly at Chan. “Take your time. Remember, you don’t have to figure everything all at once. And when you’re stuck, I’m here for you, and so is Lee, Cynthia, and God.”

Chan bit his lip. “Whatever.”

Aster Chuckled again, then continued to stare at his phone. Chan stared at the tall red haired make fondly. He felt a smile force it’s way onto his features. Why…was he feeling so happy?

He had spent most of his life on edge, and suspicious of everyone around him, not letting them in, pushing them out, through various methods.

His eyes narrowed as memories of just how he had treated the people around him filled his mind. He had treated them so terribly.

Yet here Aster was, smiling at him, and treating him with as much kindness as possible. They had fought, but he felt as if the fights had helped him understand his friend much better.

Friend.

The people around him right now felt more than just friends. They felt like family.

Chan sat comfortably in the blissful state of mind, and he didn’t know when he drifted asleep.

In his unconscious, he was back at his family house, at the place and memories he had tried all his life to run away from. He stood, once again a child, staring at his mother’s bleeding weakened form.

She rose her l-ips to his ears and muttered words that had never left his mind since the time she had said them.

“Chan my dear…you can never trust anyone in this world.”

As she said the words, usually he would have accepted them. He should have accepted them. But his heart revolted.

“Who can I trust mom? You said I can’t even trust myself. So who can I trust? The people around me…. I want to trust them. I want to…. I don’t want to be alone anymore. I’m tired mom. I’m tired. Please answer me.”

His mother’s form didn’t answer him as expected, but instead continued sobbing pathetically, and he dropped to his knees in despair.

He knelt before her crying form. What did he expect? A dead woman couldn’t give him answers.

He was about ready to wake up from this stupid dream already.

His mother’s movement drew his attention back to her hunched form. Her body was shaking slightly, and he could hear choked squeals coming from her. It almost sounded like….like she was laughing.

“Mom?”

She rose her head slowly to face him, and he recoiled back in horror. Whomever it was before him looked like his mother, but he knew in his heart that it wasn’t her. Her beautiful and calming features were now twisted, with a sinister and malicious look in her eyes.

He fell back, suddenly feeling very afraid.

“Chan my son…you’re asking me who you can trust?” Her voice was low and mocking, and sounded much like glass being shattered on a rock. He struggled not to cover his ears from the unappealing sound.

“You can’t trust anyone! I told you that already, didn’t I? Hahahaha!!! You think all these people around you care about you? Of course they don’t. It’s only a matter of time. They’ll get sick of you too. They’ll throw you away. You don’t want that do you? You’re the one who abandons people aren’t you? Why are you behaving like a wuss?!”

“I…. I don’t want to be that person anymore! I don’t want to be proud…I don’t want to isolate myself from the people around me! Lee said….she said she didn’t want me to be alone…I don’t want to hurt these people by treating them like garbage! I can’t afford to lose them!”

“You worthless sc-m. You’re no different than I was. In the end, you gave in to petty emotions, just like I did. You were supposed to rise above everyone, and live your life by your own rules. Don’t you know emotions will keep you under their bondage? They will boss you around in the name of love, and make you do things you don’t want to!”

“I….I don’t care….”

“What was that?”

“Mom please! Please stop talking like this! I….”

The apparition lunged forward and grabbed his face, pushing him to the ground. He gagged from how bad the thing smelt up close. How was this dream feeling so real? He could feel every emotion, and his fear, it was raw and real.

“You will be whatever I ask you to. You will follow my rules and continue to be the proud, arrogant jerk you are. You can’t change. Not for yourself, not for anyone. You will scorn and despise everyone around you, and push them away.”

Chan’s eyebrows narrowed, his eyes suddenly becoming clear, and his fear slowly dissipating.

“Your rules?” He asked, and his question seemed to startle the monstrosity before him.

“You said I was living my life by my own rules, but now you just said that I should follow your rules and live my life the way you want. That’s a contradiction.”

The apparition’s eyes wΒ‘dened, before it gave a loud yell and Chan jerked awake on the couch.

He was sweating profusely, despite the cool November air. A blanket was draped over him, and Aster was nowhere to be seen.

He struggled to regain his bearing, finding that he could recall every single moment of that dream…or was it a nightmare?

He clenched and unclenched his fists several times in the minutes that he sat down on the couch, confused as heck.

Something was going on, and call him crazy, but he was starting to feel like his entire life had been a lie.

Who was that person in his dream? It definitely wasn’t his mother. And the things it said….the way it talked. It was too real and aggressive to just be his imagination.

What was going on?

🎢🎢🎢🎢

Lee made her way through the streets as the morning dawned. She had decided to go out early, since she still wasn’t so comfortable with people seeing her just yet. Chan had been asleep in his room when she had woken up, and she was a bit disappointed as she wanted to at least see him before she left.

She had decided, and with the encouragement of her mother, to go and see her former Piano instructor to help her to learn and get back into playing.

She was scared as she didn’t know exactly what going there meant for her, and if her old teacher and mentor would even want to see her or take her in again.

She sighed as she found herself at the small building which housed the classroom. Whatever happened, she still had to try.

She still had to push herself, and well she would pray that her instructor would find it in his heart to forgive her for abandoning her passion the way she did, as well as for cutting him off, and especially for the harsh words she ahd said when he and tried to reach out to her.

She sighed again, feeling the weight of her offences getting heavier the more she thought about them.

Geez, Maybe she should just turn back now.

“Liana?”

She turned at the sound of her name, and sure enough, her old teacher was standing, not looking any different than the last time she had seen him.

“I can’t believe my eyes.”

She gave a shaky smile.

“Hi there teach. It’s been awhile hasn’t it?”

Cynthia stared once again at Aster’s missed call on her phone. The poor boy was still trying to reach her, even when she had lied that she was okay. Her heart yearned for him, she wanted to run into his arms and tell him all her troubles.

But she knew that was a vain dream. She was an adult, and she couldn’t expect to dump her worries and her shortcomings on someone else’s shoulders.

But, even though it had just been a day since she had seen Chan’s father, Mann, she had become disoriented and disorg-nized. The knowledge that he was lurking around looking for Chan rattled her, her reaction upon seeing him filled her with guilt, and she was fast becoming depressed.

She couldn’t let him walk back into Chan’s life and ruin what she knew wwas a change God was doing to him.

Even if that meant ruining her relationshΒ‘p with Chan, she wouldn’t let Mann back into his life.

‘But what if Mann looking for his son is also orchestrated by God? Would you still try to stop it?’

The voice in her heart was still bit sure, and she was left torn. How…how would that devil of a man coming back into Chan’s life help him in one bit? Why would God do that? She couldn’t understand it.

‘Sometimes, you shouldn’t try to understand me. You should just obey.’

Hot tears began to fall from her eyes. If she stayed like this, she would go crazy. She picked up her phone, and booked a flight to the Aguichi Island.

It was time to end things, once and for all.
