Chapter 20 πŸ€πŸ€ fififif

(The sound the storm makes…..)

Lee sat quietly in the very familiar classroom. Just being there brought back many memories, and the memories caused her heart to ache. She had wasted too much of her life on grief and misery. Three years might seem like a small amount of time to some, but it was too long for her. Too much a time of her life that she had given to the past. In the end, the decision to move forward, though it had been a difficult one, was the best decision she could have made. She silently thanked God, as well as her family and Chan, for giving her the strength, and pushing her when she was scared.

Her teacher, and elderly man in his forties, mad this way back to where she was seated, and set a small porcelain cup before her, before taking another one for himself. He then filled the two cups with sweet smelling tea.

“I know you teenagers would much prefer to be treated with those sugary drinks, but you know me, Liana, I like eating and drinking healthy.”

Lee chuckled, then leaned forward to pick up the cup, blowing on it gently, before taking a sip. “You still make it as good as I remember.”

The man crossed his leg, a serious expression settling on bus wrinkled features. “Now I don’t want to sound rude, but I believe this is not just a courtesy visit.”

Lee bit her lip, then set the cup back gently on the table. “I….uh… I’m here to apologise.”

The man rose an eyebrow at her, his eyes never leaving hers. “If that’s all you came here to do, then you needn’t worry….”

“No that’s not all!….I….” Lee bit her lip again, summoning as much courage as she could. “I was a jerk. I know that. I treated you and the people around me horribly, and I don’t even know how I can begin to apologise for that. And even now, I’m selfish and shameless enough to ask you to take me on as your student again. I’ve started playing again, and I know I’m probably deluding myself, but I hope that one day I can achieve what I threw away, maybe even something greater. And for that I need your help.”

Her teacher stared at her quietly for awhile, his hand on his chin. He gave a sigh, and then smiled. “Liana….you can’t begin to imagine how happy I am that you’ve decided to pick up your instrument again. I’ve honestly been praying for this ever since the incident three years ago. And I’m not angry at you. I never was. I understand where you were coming from, and the pain you were going through.”

Lee’s eyes twinkled, and her heart filled with hope.

“But….”

The smile slowly left her face as her teacher continued.

“I will not be your teacher again.”

“What? W-why?”

“Because, as much as I’m elated that you’ve decided once again to follow your dream, I cannot teach someone who so easily threw her dream away. I hold nothing against you Liana, I hope you can believe that. But I don’t want to train someone who can easily give up the way you did.”

“B-but….it wasn’t easy! I….”

“You know what I always told you- no matter how you feel or what you’re going through, once the curtain rises, the show must go on, and what should only matter in that moment is your audience. You forgot my words easily Liana. The three years you spent wallowing are years you’ll never get back. And I can’t be sure that if things.get difficult or hΓ¦rd, you won’t give up again. And I’m not ready to see another person throw away their talent. Again.” His eyes filled with sadness.

Lee felt tears flowing down her cheeks.

“Teach! Y-you can’t do this!”

“I’m sorry Liana. But you’ll have to find someone else to teach you.”

🎢🎢🎢🎢

Lee left the academy in a daze. She couldn’t believe what had just happened. The tears fell freely from her eyes as she made her way home. Aster was out, and her mother was at work, so she guessed that only she and Chan were at home. She hadn’t seen him since last night, but right now she really needed to talk to him.

She made her way to his room, then knocked lightly on the door. There was no answer, and she rested her forehead on the cool wood. “Are you there Chan? I…I really need someone to talk to right now. No…I really need you to talk to right now.”

There was still no answer, and she began to get worried. Maybe he wasn’t home. Maybe he went out with Aster. She whΒ‘pped out her phone and texted her brother. He replied not long after that Chan was indeed home, though he hadn’t seen him at all that morning either.

Lee began to get unnerved. Why wasn’t he answering her? Was he asleep?

She began to knock more fervently on the door. “Chan? Are you okay?”

She hadn’t knocked for more than a few seconds when the door opened. Chan stood before her, looking disheveled, and a deep sorrow in his eyes. She could see the telltale signs of a beard on his chin, showing that he hadn’t even bothered to shave that morning. He was definitely not okay.

She bit her lip as he stared at her quietly, his eyes narrowed and hooded.

“What’s…what’s wrong Chan? Talk to me.” She had completely forgotten all about her own worries.

“I….” His voice was hoarse and strained, and it broke her heart. What could be causing him so much pain?
“I’m sorry. You said you wanted to tell me something?”

Lee frowned. “I’m okay. But you’re Clearly not.”

He leaned against the door, and began to look around, averting his eyes from hers. He knew if he continued to stare at her, and the concerned look in her face, he might breakdown.

“I just had a bad dream. That’s all.”

“A bad dream?”

“…Yeah.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Believe what you want to.”

She grabbed his hand. They were so cold.

He reacted to her touch, and stared at her in alarm.

“No. You don’t get to do this Chan. I….I came home right now to rely on you, and to lean on you to lift my spirits up. And I come here to meet you looking like this? What am I supposed to do? Leave you alone? No way! I can’t! I can’t rely on you and then you push me away!”

Chan’s eyes filled with the tears her had tried to force back. Lee squeezed his hand, and he released a shaky sigh.

“I just….I’m just so confused Lee. I…I don’t know what to do anymore. I feel like I’ve been doing the wrong thing my wh0le life….I’m just….”

He rested his head on her shoulders, sobbing quietly. Lee felt her tears falling from her eyes too. Chan was fine last night. What could have happened to make him this way?

Well, whatever it was, it didn’t matter. What mattered was that she needed to be there for him.

She rose her hands and began to pat his back tenderly, then sniffed.

“I don’t know what caused this change Chan, but like I’ve always been saying, you are a blessing to me. You’ve helped me and pushed me in ways I couldn’t imagine. So I believe, that no matter what, God will do the same for you. He will help you through what you’re going through. And help you come out stronger. All this confusion and pain is for a reason. I’ve learnt, that sometimes we go through pain so we can grow. So we can help others. So that we can lift our voices and scre-m, ‘I made it!’ Pain makes the victory that much sweeter. So, just….be strong. It will be okay. Trust me. And trust God.”

The word “Trust” made Chan freeze. He remembered his mother’s words, and more tears dropped from his eyes.

He wrapped his arms around Lee’s body and pulled her closer to him, burying his head in her shoulders.

He didn’t care what his mother said.

He didn’t care that his mother said he couldn’t trust anyone.

He trusted Lee.

He wasn’t sure he trusted God yet.

But, with every fiber of his being, he trusted Lee.

He hugged her tighter, but soon began to feel his self control slipping away from him, and reluctantly pushed her away. Her face was red, and he was happy he had let her go when he did.

He wiped his face, realizing that he was not the least bit embarrassed that he has cried in front of a girl.

“So, you told me you had something to tell me?” He said quietly. Lee smiled, that knowing and gentle smile that had thrown him off guard when he had first seen it, and he felt his heart do a backflip.

“Don’t worry. I know exactly what I have to do.”

🎢🎢🎢

The next day, Lee was back at the academy, very early in the morning, waiting at the front door.
Her teacher arrived at the exact time she had expected. In all her years of learning with him, not once had he ever arrived a minute later than his usual time. He was that consistent and diligent.

His eyes wΒ‘dened upon seeing her, but she had braced herself for anything he might say.

She took a deep breath, and with a firm voice said,

“Teach, I know you said you can’t take me on again, and I understand how much I disappointed you, but I’m here to tell you that I’m not that person anymore! And I know it’s going to take a lot more than my words to convince you, but I’m ready to do so with my actions! I will not take no for an answer! And I will keep coming back to see you until you accept me! I won’t give up, not now, not ever!”

She p-nted heavily as she finished.

Her teacher stared at her with wide eyes, then chuckled to himself. “Come in,side Liana.”

Lee kept her heart in her throat, but she quietly followed him in.

They arrived into the classroom, and he gestured towards one of the pianos in the room.

“Go ahead. Give it a go.”

Lee sat down carefully, and began to play. In her ears, she sounded awful, nothing from how good she was three years ago, and she was sure her teacher thought the same.

When she was done, he sighed.

“As I expected, you’ve gotten rusty. Three years of no practice will show.” He took a deep breath, and then faced her.

“I’m going to be very strict with you Liana. I’m not going to go easy on you. The hours will be grueling, you will practice till your hands bleed. I will spare no rod in training you to be the best.”

Lee bit her lip. “I am ready to do whatever it takes teach. I’m not giving up or running away anymore.”

The man stared at her silently for awhile, then a proud smile spread across his face.

“Alright then. We can start your classes as soon as….”

Lee’s eyes wΒ‘dened. “But wait teach! I thought you said yesterday that….”

“I know what I said yesterday. And it was just a test. I needed to know that you wanted to play again as badly as a human being needs to breathe. I needed to see the spirit in you that was ready to fight for her dreams. And you’ve shown me. But you’re gonna do a lot more than talking though. And honestly, if you hadn’t shown up at my doorstep again today, I would have taken that to mean that you really weren’t worthy of me taking you on.”

Lee’s eyes filled with tears. She bowed her head and sniffed. “Thank you, teach.”

The man above her chuckled.

“Thank you for not giving up on your dream.” He rose his arms up extravagantly.

“Welcome back aboard, Liana Peterson.”

🎢🎢🎢

Chan sat down to a heart dinner once again with the Petersons. Although someone was missing, and he felt her absence a little more than he would have liked.

“Now that Lee has started classes again, she’s going to be coming home really late.” Aster explained as he sat down to his own meal. Chan sighed, as he picked up his fork to begin eating.

“Try not to look to disappointed Channie….”

Chan scowled at the red haired male’s teasing face. He was enjoying this a little too much. He began to eat silently, as Aster and his mother began to chat.

He had come to enjoy these peaceful family dinners, and would surely miss the love and feeling of family that exuded from them.

The ability to for the wh0le family to sit down for dinner together every night, and to maintain it that way, was a trait most people took for granted.

He remembered his dream, and how Lee had comforted him the previous day. His face heated up as he remembered how she felt in his embrace. He was grateful that he had let go of her when he did, as they were both obviously alone at home, and emotions were running high.

He sighed to himself and ran his fingers through his hair. That aside, he couldn’t be more grateful for her comforting words, and whatever his dream had meant, he would figure it out with her. After all, he could trust her.

Aster playfully flicked him in the face with a pea, and he retaliated.

He smiled at the goofy redhead. And Aster.

He…he could trust Aster too.

πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

After they were done with dinner, Chan lazied around the living room, practicing his singing a little as well as playing with Neon. He had decided to wait for Lee to get back home.

He didn’t wait long though, as she burst in not long after they had finished dinner, looking frantic and on edge.

Chan’s initial giddiness and excitement on seeing her faded away after seeing the look on her face.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” He asked as he watched her shut the door violently.

She faced him, and her panicked look softened with a bit of relief.

“Two men accosted me as I was coming home. They kept asking me if I knew where you lived. I tried to avoid them and ended up running away from them. But I don’t know if they followed me. It was so freaky.”

Chan’s eyes narrowed, and he held her hands tenderly, but awkwardly.

“Don’t-dont be scared. You’re home now.”

Lee stared at his hand, then at his face, before smiling widely.

“I am.”

Aster suddenly burst in, a phone in his ear.

He grabbed his coat, and began to head towards the front door.

“Where are you off to bro?” Lee asked, as he whizzed past she and Chan.

Aster glanced at Chan.

“Cynthia called me to pick her up at the airport. I don’t know but…she sounded really off.”

“Who’s Cynthia?”

Aster didn’t bother answering Lee, but instead pulled the front door open. However, who they saw standing at the front door stopped them all in their tracks.

Two men stood at the door, one of them bearing a striking resemblance to Chan.

Lee felt Chan let go of her hand, and when she turned to him, the look on his face scared her. All the blood had drained from his face, and he had gone deathly pale.

One of the men, the one who looked exactly like Chan, smiled sadly.

“I’ve found you finally. My son.”
