Episode 21—24

Episode 21

“my love” I breathed, holding Jessica’s hands. She scoffed and drew back, fixed her hair and got up.

“I now get it, you never planned sending that girl away because she got your job back for you” she hissed, and headed to the bathroom.

I breathed deeply and fell back on the bed. Yea I definitely had to come up with something to reassure and put her mind at ease. Of course sending Comfort away was very much in my mind but the timing was what mattered the most. I just couldn’t send the girl away just few days after getting my job back. I was intelligent enough to know that I was still at her mercy, sending her out so soon could make her snap and spoil things once again.

I followed Jessica to the bathroom, held her by the waist, caressing her a little. She pushed my hands away, turned and stared at me.

“my love you just don’t understand. You are simply blinded by jealousy and hate. C’mon how do you expect me to kick her out the instant I get home. Let’s be honest. Don’t you think she will fight back?” I asked my dear wife who kept quiet, saying nothing.

“listen to me, my love” I pleaded, holding her chin.

‘’I will get the silly girl out of our home, that I promise you. But it’s going to be a gradual process. You know her only aim is to be with me and that will make kicking her out at this stage very dangerous. I promise I will move her to a good apartment but it’s just not now. Trust me” I begged with all my heart. Tears fell from Jessica’s eyes as she stared at me.

“ I do understand but it’s difficult living with the knowledge that another woman is living in my home. how many women will accept it.” she cried. I swallowed hard and hugged her. I really was lucky to have such an educated and understanding wife.

It really was a happy weekend for me. I had so much fun with my Jessica who managed her condition and took me out for a little sight seeing on Saturday. Early Sunday morning I headed back home with a happy mind.

I returned home to meet my mother very sick and dry. She just was a shadow of herself. I couldn’t believe she could look so horrible just after two days I left home.

Comfort was the first to tell me about her condition the moment I arrived.

“dearest I don’t just know what’s wrong with mum. She’s been vomiting all through Saturday. She’s taken every dysentery and diarrhea drugs I can get yet it doesn’t seem to work.” She said, leaving me very worried as I ran to my mother’s room.

“what could be wrong mum?. I cant remember the last time you had such stomach problem” I said to the old woman as I held her hands with concern. She smiled weakly.

“nobody called me. Comfort could have called to tell me” I breathed.

‘’no my son, I asked her not to disturb you. I also stopped her from taking me to the hospital. I think my stay in this house is over. I have to go back to the village . Your father wants me back. I will get better there, moreover I’m doing nothing here. I have seen you are comfortable with comfort.” She said quietly while I stared at her suspiciously, wondering if Comfort somehow had a hand in what was happening to her.

The next day I took mum home and returned to stay all alone with Comfort who brought her mum over to the house the next day without telling me.

I really was totally shocked as I returned home from work on Tuesday evening to see comfort and her mother in my sitting room.

 

Episode 22

Comfort noticed the frown on my face the moment my eyes fell on her mother. I greeted the old woman politely and dashed into my room with anger. she followed me, looking very remorseful.

‘’what’s your mother doing here?’’ I asked angrily. She drew close and held my shoulders from behind. An action that irritated me tremendously.

‘’she’s my mother for crying out loud. Why are you sounding very disrespectful?’’ she murmured. I turned and stared at her with fire in my eyes.

‘’what did you just say ?’’ I asked. She breathed deeply, drawing back fearfully.

‘’I’m sorry, but the way you have been treating me isn’t just fair. We live in the same apartment yet we relate like strangers. I cant even chat or play with you. My only crime is loving you unconditionally’’ she sobbed while I stared at her speechlessly, unmoved by her sudden change of mood. She slowly sat on my bed and continued with the crying. I ignored her , undressed and cursed inwardly.

I really was getting fed up with her, but just had to with it all.

“it’s all my fault” I said to myself with regret.

‘’why do you hate me so much?. Why do you resent me so much?’’ I heard her ask. I simply ignored her and whistled.

‘’ I love you so much Caleb. I will sacrifice my life a hundred times over to make you happy. You are my world. You mean a lot to me. Why are you treating me so heartlessly?. Yes I’m in your house but I’m not happy. Remember everything happens for a purpose. You shouldn’t question God. Stop treating me like a leper. I beg of you.” She cried solemnly.

After a while, I drew close and sat beside her.

“I know you do love me. There is no doubt about that. But I have a wife. I have a life. I’m not happy being without my wife. Tell me, what’s your plan?. What do you plan to make out of your life?. What’s your plan for our baby?’’ I asked softly, caressing her back. She wiped her tears and stared at me.

‘’after my baby is born, I will go for my National youth service and get the certificate’’ she replied and breathed deeply.

‘’but what’s your plan for our son?. Will you treat him the way you are treating me?. Will you tell him that he was conceived by mistake?. Will you give him your last name?. will you make him a part of your family?’’ she asked seriously, throwing me back with the heavy questions. I kissed her forehead and smiled at her reassuringly.

‘’if the child turns out to be mine which I’m sure he is. I will accept him. He will be part of my family. You shouldn’t worry about him.’’ I answered.

‘’so how about me?’’ sh asked slowly.

‘’oh comfort, you know I don’t love you. I can never be with you. All we had in the past were just lies. Moreover I have a young and beautiful wife.” I answered honestly.

‘’supposing your wife gets out of the way, you will be mine. Right?’’ she asked while I nodded.

‘’yes you are my second best, but you see, my wife can never be out of the way” I answered. She nodded slowly.

“I see” she muttered under her breath and got up.

“I love you very much, with all my heart. You will be mine soon” she said courageously and left the room, leaving me wondering if she has finally lost her head.

I barely had settled down in my office the next day, when my old pal Henry walked in with a calm smile on his face. I drew back on seeing him as old memories instantly flashed back into my head.

It was in his hotel that my affair with comfort started. It was in his hotel that my life changed course of direction.

Ever since the affair with comfort blew up, I had avoided him till that present moment.

I knew avoiding him wasn’t the best decision and I kind of felt a bit tensed up seeing him in my office. Definitely I knew something big brought him in.

 

Episode 23

Minutes later at a Restaurant close to the university, I reluctantly shared all I have been through to Henry who listened with great attention.

My mind however relaxed as I shared my fears, story and feelings to him. It really felt good sharing my problems with a friend, something I had yearned to do for a long time.

‘’so my brother, that’s my story. I’m now standing between the devil and his fire. I so much want to be with my wife but it isn’t possible at the moment and comfort so much wants to be with me against my happiness. I love my wife so much but I just had to sacrifice many things to survive. It’s really not as if I intentionally decided to avoid you but the thing is that I messed up big time. I’m still ashamed of myself. How can I face my friends or old pals with such a story?. I was unable to control a mere girl while some guys like you do control as much as five girls without much stress.” I poured out with regret. Henry shook his head, sipped his drink and smiled.

‘’yea you really messed up big time. You shouldn’t have allowed your relationship with comfort to grow wings. That was your mistake and fixing things now will definitely bit a lot tougher. Moreover you now owe your job to her. She’s living with you and will also give you your first child to seal her control over you.’’ He said slowly while I listened carefully.

‘’Jessica will return soon and comfort will go away’’ I added. Henry laughed.

‘’do you think so?’’ he asked,

‘’believe me, you will be disappointed. It Seems like you are yet to understand how females reason?’’ he muttered. I stared at him thoughtfully.

‘’my brother, your Comfort definitely knew what she was up against before even getting pregnant for you. Unlike we guys, before a girl does something, she will think it through, weigh the risk and gains before going on with it. She’s simply acting up a script for you brother and you are just playing along with her. She’s going to frustrate your plans of being with your wife that you are going to feel like killing her in the end, which you will end up doing wrongly’’ He summarized easily, sending cold fear into my heart with his words.

‘’what do you suggest I do now?’’ I asked with resignation. He kept quiet for a while, breathing deeply.

‘’you preferred your job over your wife bro, and it kind of made things more complicated. You have to find the right moment to make comfort go away forever, or she might end up doing it to your wife. There is no other way bro. The girl is obsessed with you. You can’t offer her money. Her silence and support puts food on your table via your job. She knows She got you in her hands.’’ Henry replied.

‘’so what exactly are you insinuating?’’ I asked with shock.

‘’you tell me’’ he laughed and finished his drink. I shook my head and swallowed hard.

‘’hope murdering Comfort isn’t what he’s insinuating?’’I wondered as the thought crossed over my mind. Of course I knew Comfort was capable of doing the same to my wife with any slightest opportunity. Moreover my mother’s sudden illness and exit from the house kind of pointed fingers at the d–n girl.

Fortunately nothing extraordinary happened in the following months that came by. My work went well, I saved a lot of money, Jessica grew stronger and comfort still stayed in my house with her mother who watched over her every minute.

She finally gave birth to a very lovely boy, who brought a new kind of feeling into my heart. Comfort became the mother of my first male child.

‘’his name will be Caleb ‘’ she smiled to me as I carried him in my hands for the first time.

 

Episode 24

‘’Comfort my dear, the naming should wait till we get home. Don’t be In a hurry to name him after me’’ I added cautiously, dropping the baby on the bed. she stared at me with suspicion. The doctor came in that very moment with a great smile on his face.

‘’congrats Mr Caleb, your son is very handsome and healthy’’ he praised, shaking hands with me. I nodded and forced out a smile.

‘’please can we talk outside?’’ I asked him. He shrugged in acceptance. comfort looked on with great worry.

‘’yes sir, we can talk outside’’ he accepted and left the room. I followed him without another word.

On getting to the corridor leading to other wards, the doctor turned and faced me.

‘’I hope everything is alright?’’ he asked curiously.

‘’yea doctor, it’s just that I want a DNA test to be done on the baby. I feel he’s mine but I just want to be sure. Can you do it?’’ I asked. He nodded and smiled.

‘’sure I can, just wait for me in my office so that we can start up the process right away.’’ He answered. I nodded and breathed deeply with great relief.

Just like I told the doctor, I felt the baby was mine but only wanted to have proof.

Two days later, comfort returned to my house with her child in high spirit. The DNA test fortunately for her came out positive and everything really turned out to be working in her favour. I couldn’t help but wonder if the old priest’s revelation months ago will surely come to past.

As I watched Comfort settle down in my apartment with her baby, tears slowly formed in my eyes. I slowly remembered the cold manner Jessica took the news of the baby’s birth.

Seriously , Jessica was far from excited when I told her about the new baby in the family. The silence in her end of the line as I broke the news to her right from the hospital told me all I needed to know.

‘’I guess I should congratulate you” she managed to say, sending great pain through my heart with the words. I couldn’t find my voice.

‘’I won’t want that girl to return to my house after being discharged from the hospital. I have tolerated her excesses enough, so better look for an accommodation for her if you are yet to get any’’ she sounded coldly. I couldn’t argue with her, instead I accepted doing her wish fully knowing how hard it would be. I called my mother thereafter and invited her all over again.

Against my wife’s wish, comfort returned to my house because she couldn’t continue staying in the hospital while I arranged for a new accommodation for her. Yes I accept I was silly not to have arranged all that before the arrival of the baby.

‘’what are you thinking?’’ I heard my mother ask as she walked into the sitting room. I breathed deeply and shrugged, saying nothing.

‘’I think your child looks pale. He isn’t looking good’’ she said, sitting by my side. I looked up at her with disbelief.

‘’c’mon mum, why are you sounding like that?. The boy looks okay to me, moreover the doctor confirmed to me that he is okay before we left the hospital’’ I defended sharply. She shook her head and sighed.

‘’isn’t he the same doctor that forced you to keep the girl with you?. It’s either he isn’t telling you the truth or he is blind. I’m a mother and I know a sick child when I see one.’’ She said seriously. I laughed and touched her shoulder.

‘’dear mum, I very much know you are not fond of comfort. Relax, she’s going away soon’’ I promised, stood up and went into comfort’s room to talk with her concerning the new plans I was making .

It really was something I was scared of doing, but had no choice than to summon the courage and get it done.

Comfort looked up at me with concern as I walked into her room. Her mother quickly got up and left us alone.

‘’my love what’s the matter?’’ she asked. I kept quiet and swallowed hard, forming some words in my mind.

‘’I guess your mum told you that our son is sick?. She said the same to me. Why does she hate me so much?. Why is she so bent on making me suffer?. I have done everything to make her love me. Yet she hates me’’ she complained and instantly broke down in tears, crying so hard that I had no choice than to suspend what I came to tell her.

Sitting by her side. I held and pleaded with her to stop crying….
