EIGHT YEARS LATER
Eva was eating at the dinning dressed up for school and Mr Philip came down to the sitting room,he grabbed a news paper at the table and started reading.

“Good Morning Dad!
She greeted him but he didn’t respond.

“Good Morning Dad!
She greeted him again thinking that he didn’t hear the first greeting but still he didn’t respond.

She stood up and went closed to him and greeted him again with smiles.
“Dad Good Morning!

“What is it? Can’t someone have peace of mind in his own house again?
He shouted angrily even threw the news paper on the floor.

“I only came to greet you Dad!
She stammered in fear.

“No greeting me! I don’t need your greeting and one more thing am not your Dad so stop calling me Dad”
She shouted angrily picked back the newspaper on the floor.

Eva walked out from his presence with sadness and went back to the dinning table,she cleared her plates and went to the kitchen.

“You are done already? You didn’t finish the food what happen?
The mom asked as she glanced the plate of Huevos Ranchores.

“Nothing Mom!
She replied still feeling sad.

The Mom looked at her and saw the sadness look on her face.

“What is it my love? Why the sad face?
She asked.

“Mom why did Dad hate us so much? Why did he despise us?
She asked with a sad face and her hands folded together.

She unfolded her hands and held them,
“My sweet Eva Dad didn’t hates us okay”
She said.

“No Mom! He dose,he hate us and he used to beat you all the time,he is not a good man”
She said.

“Stop saying that,Your Dad is a good man it just that he is going through a tough time”
She said still holding her hands.

“Always going through a tough time since I was four years till now,I don’t think so Mom,he is a wicked man and he is so mean and always shouting at us especially you Mom,he beats you every single day what type of man does that to his wife and even to his daughter,How am I sure that am actually his daughter”
She sounded so sadly.

“Where did you get that from? He is your father okay”
She said trying to convince her.

“No Mom! That wicked Man can never be my father besides he said it to my face that I should stop greeting him that am not his daughter”
She said.

She became so surprised and asked,
“When did he say that to you?

“A few minutes ago Mom!

“Now I know where the sadness came from? It shouldn’t surprise me because I know that one day he will eventually tell her the truth”
She thought.

“Sweetie you know how your Dad is,he is not in his right sense when he said that,he is your Dad okay”
She said trying to convince her.

“Mom I know that Dad used to drink all the time and this morning he has not gone out to drink so he was on his right sense when he made it clear to me that I should stop greeting and calling him Dad because am not his daughter,Mom is there something you are not telling me?
She asked.

“Something like what my dear?
She asked confusingly.

“The real truth about me”
She said.

She became so astonished about her statement,
“Angel did you know you are getting late for school? I have packed your lunch box you can have it”
She automatically changed the subject.

“But Mom you have not answer my question”
She sounded.

“Forget about what you ask or what you need to know about yourself and go to school”
She said and handled her the lunch box.

“But when I come back from school you will tell me everything I need to know about myself”
She said.

“There’s nothing you need to know about yourself,am your Mother and Mr Philip is your father,take care of yourself while at the school,I love you”
She said and pecked her on the cheek.

“I love you too Mom!
She hugged her so tight before leaving the kitchen.

She went outside,Clara Mrs Cantu’s daughter is already outside their house waiting for her,she is now eight years older than Eva.

“Why did Eva want to know the real truth about herself? Could it be someone has told her something? I know I will tell her the truth one day but it won’t be at this her age”
She said and went to her room to shower and prepare for her business.

IN THE EVENING
Eva came back from school around 4pm,she didn’t go the shop as usual she decided to come back home and prepare dinner for her family especially for her Mom who she regarded as her family,at her tender age she is so talented in cooking,she can cook very well and also bringing up a new recipes.

“It seems that man is at home”
She sounded at the moment she noticed the door was opened.

She dusted off her legs at the doormat before going in,side,she went straight to the room and met her father stealing money in her mother’s purse.

“What are you doing with that purse?
She shouted and scared the living life out of him.

“Are you blind? Can’t you see that am taking some money?
He shouted at her.

“So Dad it has gotten to this level that you will now steal mother’s money? You are a thief!
She shouted at him boldly without any atom of fear.

“How dare you to call me a thief! You have now grow wings to insult me in my own house?
He shouted angrily and gave her a heavy slap on the cheek.

“I can’t believe a man like you will be stealing money from his wife,are you not shame of yourself Mr Philip? Your mate are out there making money while you are here stealing money,you will use the money to useless yourself in gambling and drinking and come back home late at night and rant out nonsense from your mouth instead of you to be so shame of yourself for a woman to been taking good care of you and also providing for you”
She shouted angrily.

He became so angry,the rate of this anger increased to over thousand,he pulled his belt from this trouser and started flogging her mercilessly.

She cried and ran out from her dear life,she ran to the kitchen and locked the door,she cried and cried at a point she wiped her tears,her hands were filled of bruises.

“I gonna put that wicked man in his place”
She sounded angrily and breathing heavily.

She sat down to calm down herself at the moment she noticed that Mr Philip has left the house,she came out from the kitchen to the room to remove her school uniform.

She worn a simple dress(house gown) and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner.

Few hours later,a knock came from outside she rushed and opened the door.

“Welcome Mom!
She said with smiles and hugged her,She carried her bag.

“Thank you Love! You didn’t come to the shop after school to assist me what happen?
She asked and they walked to the sitting room.

“I came straight home to prepare dinner for you Mom”
She said with smiles.

“Wow! that’s so sweet of you my Angel”
She sounded with smiles and hugged her.

“Thank you Mom,let me get you a glass of chill water”

“Yeah! I really need that”

She smiled and walked to the fridge brought her a glass of water,she drank all.

“So my dear Eva what did you cook?
She asked and gave her the cup.

“I cooked Machaca Mom”

“Machaca! I have not heard about that food before”
She said.

“Machaca is a new recipe I brought”

“Wow! I will like to taste that your new recipe my love”

“Then go and freshen up,let me set the dinning”

“I will do that right away”
She stood up and went the room to freshen up.

Eva went to the kitchen to dish out the food, few minutes later they are already at the dinning table.

She ate a full spoon of the food and shouted with smiles,
“Wow! This is so delicious Eva!

“I know you gonna like it Mom”
She said with smiles.

“You are very talented in cooking and you will be the best chef in the whole world”
She complimented her.

“Thank you Mom,being a chef is my dream,I have passion for cooking”
She said and started eating her food.

Meanwhile her mother have not discovered the burises on her hands due and was hiding it from her.

“I will stand by you and help you to achieve that your dream my love”
She said with smiles.

She stood up and hugged her with happiness written all over her face.

“Thank you so much Mom”
She said.

Just about to go back to her chair her mother discovered the burises.

“Wait,what am I seeing in your hands? Is that burises?
She asked.

“Is nothing Mom”
She said and wanted to go back she held her hand.

“Where did you get this burises Eva?
She asked looking at her hands.

“Mom I slipped and crashed my hands on the wall”
She said trying to hold her sneeze but it is very difficult for someone to hold sneeze so she sneezed out.

Another thing she got from her mother is whenever she lied she will start sneezing all of a sudden.

“You are my daughter and I know you very well that you can’t lie whenever you are telling lie you will start sneezing so you don’t have to been lying to me,Eva tell me the truth where did you that burises from?
She asked being so worried.

“Okay,is your husband Mr Philip”
She finally said.

“What did he do to you?
She asked being so worried.

“I caught him stealing from your purse then I confronted him,he started shouting at me and flogged me with his belt”
She explained.

“He flogged you with his belt! How could he raise his hands on you? I can’t endure his beating to me but what I can’t take is he beating my daughter”
She shouted angrily.

“Mom please calm down,I don’t want you to confront him because he will beat you that’s why I never wanted to tell you the truth but you insisted on knowing,please don’t confront him you know it breaks my heart seeing him beating and torturing you”
She pleaded with her hands folded.

“Is well my love”
She said and hugged her in tears.

She wiped out her tears,
“Stop crying,I don’t like to see you crying”

She hugged her so tight as they continued the food,she talked about what happened at the school after eating.

“Mom I really want to know the real truth about me because someone said awful things to me”
She said as she remembered the insults someone gave her at the school today.

“What did the person said about you?
She asked in shocked.

“Mom the person said that you are not my mother, you stolen me because you were desperately in need of a child I didn’t believe what he said then another person came up to me and called me an abodaned child,I don’t understand the whole thing Mom,who am I?
She asked being confused.

She kept quite at her with a shocked expression on her face.

“Please Mom tell me the truth,is it true that am not your child?
She asked.

She breathed and took the courage to tell her everything she need to know about herself,she held her hands and began.

“Eva is true am not your mother but I carried you and raised you up right from your infant stage”
She said with a teary eyes.

She became so astonished about the truth,
“So it’s true! Did you stolen me or what?
She asked teary.

“I didn’t stolen you my child,I found you on my basket of groceries and I took and nursed you like my own daughter”
She said in tears.

“That means my own mother abandoned me then?
She cried.

“I don’t know why a abandoned a precious child like you but I know they must be a good reason for doing that”
She said and went closed to her.

“What nonsense reasons will be a enough for a mother to abandoned her baby? What reason? Is only a wicked mother that will do such thing”
She cried out.

She rest her head on her shoulders and touching her head softly.

“There must be a reason behind her action that’s why she gave you something so precious”
She said.

“What did you mean mother?
She asked confusingly.

“Wait,am coming!
She said and went in,side her room,she brought out the necklace.

“I found this necklace on you”
She said and gave it to her.

“My Eva!
She read what was written on it.

“This necklace means that your mother didn’t hate you rather there meant be a deep reason for her to abandoned you that’s why she gave you the necklace which will help her to find you one day”
She said to her.

She wiped out her tears and worn the necklace,
“But Mother I need to know why you did not have a child because I heard some people saying ill things about you at the market,they said that you are barren woman due to how desperation you went and stolen me”
She asked.

“Don’t mind the marketers let them talk all the rubbish things that filled in their disgusting mouths and don’t pay attention to their rubbish anymore”
She said.

“Mom I still need to know the truth”

She breathed and said,
“Your mother is not a barren woman,I became childless because of my husband”
She narrated everything to her in tears.

“Because of him you can’t convince anymore,that man is very wicked he need to pay for all his evils to you”
She shouted angrily.

She wiped out her tears and hugged her so tight,
“It’s well mother,you are my mother and you will forever be my mother”

“My daughter having you in my life has been a blessing to me,I love you so much my Eva”
She said and pecked her on the cheek.

“I love you too Mom,as for Mr Philip he must surely pay,I heard that the Social Welfare handles people like him,we have to report him to them so that they will deal with him very well”
She said.

“We will do no such thing Eva,Mr Philip my husband is a good man he will change one day”
She said.

“Which good man in his right sense will beat up a pregnant woman at the point she even lost her baby? Which good man will be beating up his wife every single day? Which good man will be stealing from his wife to go and drink and gambling then come back home drunk? Mother that man is so wicked and heartless we have to put him on his place before he will did the unimaginable thing to you”
She shouted being so angry.

“As I said we won’t do anything,he will change for good,I assure that to you”
She said.

“Okay Mom,I will always be by your side no matter what”
She said and hugged her.

TWO DAYS LATER
Eva and her Mom were in the sitting room,she was massaging her mother’s swallowed forehead with an ice block,Mr Philip beat her up as usual,a knock came from outside.

“Let me get the door!
Eva said and dropped the ice block back to the bucket.

She opened the door and saw unknown ladies,
“Good Morning Ma’am!
She greeted them.

“Morning! Is this place number 234 market road?
One of the ladies asked.

“Yes Ma! Come in,side!
She led them in and shut the door.

Mrs Augustina stood up looking at them as they approached to her.

“Good Morning Ma,we are from the Social Welfare Agency!
They said.

“Social Welfare!
She sounded surprisingly.
