CHAPTER 27
.
Martha slowly opened the wooden door to her father’s cottage house slowly crept in, careful not to make a sound and wake her sleeping mother.

“And where are you coming from?.” Her mother’s voice startled her by the door, and she swallowed in.
Martha’s head turned to her mother and she let’s out a nervous grin.

“Mother, you’re awake,” Martha blinked.

“I’ve been awake since you left” Betty, Martha’s mother blurted staring at her daughter. “So where have you been.?”

“i was out, with… Garam and Collin.” Martha replied truthfully.

“Garam and Collin, to where?”

“To… Uhm.. Fetch fire woods?” Martha swallowed.
“Firewoods.! Why are you so brazen Martha, your father is strong enough to do that, and Collin and Garam, I understand they are your friends but they’re boys Martha, and what are those on your legs? Why are you not putting on a dress. You are going to cause me complications and complaints, people have gossiped enough saying I gave birth to a girl by accident. When will you stop hanging with those boys and start talking to the girls around you, when will understand being a woman is far more better than you think.” Betty yelled.

“I tried talking to the girls, but they won’t talk to me.” Martha muttered under her breath.

“Oh please” Betty rolled her eyes.

“I’m serious mother, Tarbitha rolled her eyes at me and Barbara ignored me.” Martha huffed.

“And how about Rosanne? She Is one of the the most decent girl I know of.”

Martha rolled her eyes. “Rosanne this, Rosanne that, she’s not in Orrander alright. And besides she doesn’t talk to me either, so don’t force who I can talk to.”

“Oh Martha.” Betty sighed, staring at her daughter. “You don’t want to put such beauty to waste.”

“I’m not beautiful” Martha mumbled.

“You are, look women in Orrander have etiquette and you’re not following any of them, first you take those trousers off your legs, I do not want to see you wear them”.

“But I’m more comfortable in these than dresses.” Martha pout.

“Over my dead body you’ll convince me to let you wear that, comfortable or not, you’re a woman, and you remember what your father told you right? Tomorrow!” Betty spat.

“Tomorrow??” Martha yelled. ‘But I’m not ready!”

“Ready or not, I don’t care, you’re meeting with John’s son and that’s final, and you’re getting married to him, before the end of the year and just so you know all these boyish phase you’re going through will be over”

Tears gathered around Martha’s eyes. “But I do not want to get married to Gregory,”

“You cannot go against your father’s words.” Betty spat. “Every maiden above fourteen has been betrothed and you will not decline who has been chosen for you, take a look at Rosanne and Garam, perfect for each other and the bond they have accepting each other, Gregory is perfect for you”.

“Why is it always Rosanne, at least compare me with someone else not her. I’m sick of all this.” Martha yelled. Angry, taking a step forward, her height towering her mother’s height.

“Because I want you to look up to her. She’s older and smarter” Betty replied through gritted teeth.

“Rosanne this, Rosanne that. Every single damn time, mother I am sick of it, if you want me to put on a skirt, a dress, Let my hair down, fine, meet up with Gregory, marry him, fine! But do not compare me with her, I will not look up to her, it’s annoying, do not make me hate her because of your words, I do not want to hate her because of you, father and every other person, I have had enough” Martha cried. Tears streaming down her eyes.

Betty stayed quiet and watched her daughter cry.

“You know mother, all these would have been a wh0le lot better if I was paired with Garam instead.” Martha spat before walking away angrily.

Betty paused, to reason what her daughter had just said said.

Martha walked into the washroom, pouring herself a bath in the big wooden basin at the center of the room, she stripped her clothes off her body and untied her hair behind her back, her long hair suddenly fell over her buttocks crossing it and laying on her legs. Grabbing the sickle she had tied with her clothes, Martha grabbed a handful of her hair and the sharp blade sliced the hair into two.

Martha breathed out an angry but yet relieved sigh when she touched her hair which now laid on her shoulder, she glanced at the remnants of her hair on the floor before stepping into the basin to have her bath.
.

The night was old and the sky was gloomy, Rosanne prepared her bed before laying it on. Saying a short prayer to the mother of Orrander, Rosanne fell asleep.
.

“Congratulations!” Zackary smiled at Rosanne.
“It’s a good thing you’re finally married” another person said to Rosanne.
“Garam will be such a loving husband to you Rosanne” another woman smiled. Rosanne smiled as she held on to her flowers, getting congratulated by so many people was like a dream come true, and more beautiful dream was getting married to Garam.
Rosanne turned to her husband, to see him backing her, he was being congratulated as well.
Rosanne beamed and call his name. “Garam.”
Slowly Garam turned with a smile and his eyes landed on Rosanne, Rosanne smile faded when she saw it wasn’t Garam but his highness.
His highness walked up to Rosanne and pulled her Into a hug.
“You’re my wife now” he said into her ear. “You’re mine now.” He added and grabbed her neck with all the forces of the world, causing Rosanne to scre-m and jerk awake.

Rosanne placed her hand on her neck breathing heavily.
“Such dream.” Rosanne p-nts. “I claim no negativity from this dream, oh mother of Orrander”. Rosanne shook her head with a frown.
She got on her feet and almost passed out when she saw his highness at her doorstep. His silhouette and presence almost causing her to pass out.
