Cassandra’s pov 🎋🎄

“F**k!” I cursed under my breath, as I checked my wrist watch for the hundredth time.

“Why is no cab coming by?” I wondered.

My eyes moved to the traffic a few meters away from me, though I couldn’t see it clearly but I knew it’s a heavy traffic…maybe that’s the reason no cab was coming.

No cab driver would wanna come along and join this queue, everyone seemed to be in a rush this evening.

As if God has seen my frustrations, I saw a cab driving towards me, I quickly reached out my hand and stopped it.

Pooh!

Pooh! The cab driver horned as he stopped in front of me, I rolled my eyeballs, he’s horning as if I’m blind and can’t see him in front of me.

I lowered my head and greeted the driver with a polite smile.

“Veronica’s teahouse, please” I told him.

“Yeah, $50”

“What?!” I exclaimed.

My brows furrowed at once, as I stared at him in surprise.

“Isn’t that a little expensive, sir? It’s supposed to be $21.65, right?” I asked him.

He turned his gaze from me, lowered his head a bit and looked ahead of him through the windscreen, I followed his gaze and saw the heavy traffic ahead of us.

Every car was on standstill, from the look of things this traffic might go on for hours.

“Miss, this traffic is very heavy and no one knows when it’s gonna be over, so I was planning on taking another route”

Oh, so that’s the reason he’s charging me so high.

“I don’t understand, why is there such a heavy traffic?” I asked.

“There’s an accident up ahead, a truck flipped over and they’re waiting for a toll car to come get it out of the way…but you know, no one knows when the toll car is gonna arrive”

“Oh” I answered cluelessly.

I have been standing here for almost one hour, but didn’t even know it was an accident that caused the traffic.

“My fuel is running, are you coming or not?” he asked.

I sighed, I know the road he’s intending to take, it’s the longest way to vero’s cafe.

But having no choice, I agreed, because it wasn’t easy getting this cab…if I should let it go, I’ll have to wait here until Brad gets off work.

I reached for the door and pulled it open, then slides in and fastened my seatbelt.

“Let’s go, sir” I said.

“Yes, Miss” he replied and started the cab…then drove into the road.

Phew! Finally, I’ve succeeded in getting a cab, even though it’s expensive.

Well, since this is gonna be a long ride, I guess I should just watch a movie or two on my phone.

“Oh, sh*t!”

I heard the driver swear, at the same time, the car jerked forward and stopped abruptly, making my forehead hit the seat in front of me.

“What’s wrong?” I asked as I raised my head.

“I think I just hit someone” he answered.

“What?”

He hit someone? Wasn’t he paying enough attention to the road?

Without waiting for him to repeat his words, I jumped out of the car and rushed forward to check out who he hit.

It didn’t take three seconds for me to get there, but a small crowd has formed around already.

There was an elderly woman, she seemed to be in her late forties or early fifties, she was sitting on the ground, her knees, right elbow and forehead were scraped.

Though her forehead wasn’t badly scraped, it was just a very tiny scratch.

I rushed to her and held her right arm, I tried to help her stand up but she couldn’t, she gasped sharply in pain and sat back on the ground.

“It hurts” she said, referring to her knees.

From the way she’s grimacing and gro-ning, it seemed like she’s in so much pain, which is quite surprising to me.

She only had a few scrapes here and there, it doesn’t look like a big deal and I believe anyone in her shoes right now can walk.

Then why is she making it seem as if she was crippled from the hit? Or could it be she had an injury on her legs before?

“It really hurts, my dear, I can’t stand up” she cried.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, I’m sorry, I…” I was cut off by what the people were saying.

*Are you the driver?*
*Young people these days, they just drive carelessly and cause accident everywhere!*
*Yeah, driver’s license shouldn’t be issued to these eighteen years old and nineteen years old!*

Eighteen years old and nineteen years old? Do I look that young? I’m twenty-four years old, people! I scre-med in my head.

I would have answered them, but the elderly woman needed an urgent medical attention, she might have broke something.

“Ma’am, can you come with me?” I asked.

“Yeah, but to where?”

I would have laughed if it wasn’t for the situation at hand, she just agreed to come with me, even before asking where I’m taking her.

“To the nearest hospital to treat your wound” I told her.

“Oh, yes, please” she said.

I turned to the driver, who I didn’t know was already standing next to us.

“Can you help me bring her to the car?” I asked.

“Of course” he answered.

He wanted to help her up, but I stopped him with a glare.

“She’s hurt and can’t walk, you’ll have to carry her” I scolded him, though in a soft tone since he look older than me.

“Right” he said.

He quickly swooped her in his arms and headed back to the car, he carried her with ease which made me wonder how much strength he has.

Well, it’s obvious he’s a strong man, with all those muscles bulging out.

He helped the woman in the backseat, I slide in after her and shut the door. He rounded the car quickly and got into the driver’s seat, then turned to me slightly.

“Which hospital are we taking her?”

“The nearest hospital, please” I replied.

He nodded and started the car, then drove off.

I helped the woman put on her seatbelt before putting on mine, all these while I felt her eyes on me, then I lifted my head and smiled at her.

“I’m really sorry, ma’am, I promise I’ll take full responsibility for this, I’ll pay the hospital bill and get you a cab to drive you home” I told her calmly.

She simply nodded with a smile playing on her l-ips, then she turned her gaze away from me and looked out the window.

I hope everything is gonna be fine when we get to the hospital, I don’t wanna get in trouble with her family.

And…my eyes flickered towards her, I assessed her, a sigh left my mouth.

Well, judging from her appearance, she seemed to be from one of those influential families….I can’t get in trouble with them.

We took a turn and arrived at a very nearby hospital in no time, the driver carried the woman and rushed in.

Luckily, a nurse approached immediately we entered the hospital, she greeted us with a warm smile.

“Good evening, how may we help you?” she asked, her eyes flickered towards the woman’s knees.

“Good evening, we’d like to have our aunt’s wounds cleaned up” I told her.

“What caused her wounds?” she asked.

“It was a minor accident, a very MINOR accident”

I kinda emphasized on the word minor, just to be safe.

“Oh, please come with me” she said.

I nodded and gestured the driver to follow up, we quickly followed the nurse closely behind.

After walking a few minutes, she stopped at a door and knocked. I lifted my head and saw, doc Kale, written at the top.

“Come in” a male voice called from in,side.

The nurse pushed the door open, though it wasn’t completely closed, and we walked in.

“Doc Kale, I brought these people for check…” she pointed at the woman. “…she seemed to be involved in an accident” she said.

“Ok, have a sit and I’ll attend to you guys in a bit” doc Kale said.

I frowned, then tapped the nurse’s shoulder gently.

“Aren’t you gonna clean up the wound and prescribe some painkillers for her? Do we really need a check up?” I asked quietly.

But I guess I wasn’t quiet enough, because the woman and doc Kale seem to heard me…the woman chuckled, while doc Kale raised his brows.

“We’ll have to do a full body check up on her” he said.

“B-but….”

“We wanna carry out a full body check up, just to be sure everything is fine” he added as if to calm me down, but that simply increased my worries.

What if she was already suffering from an injury before now? Aren’t they gonna count that on me too?

I don’t have money, I can literally be called a broke girl right now, all these check up stuffs are just gonna add up to my expenses.

Had I know she’s gonna be scheduled for a full body check up, I wouldn’t have brought her to the hospital…maybe I would have just taken her to a pharmacy.

I sighed, what an unplanned expenses!

Doc Kale dropped whatever he was doing, he got up and gestured us to follow him.

We followed him out of his office and to a small room opposite his office, then told the driver to put the woman on the small bed in the room.

“I’ll just run a quick test, ok?”

We all nodded.

From the corner of my eye, I saw the driver checking his wrist watch, there’s an anxious look on his face..like he has somewhere else to be and he’s getting late.

“Are you ok, sir?” I asked him.

“Yeah, it’s just…” he trailed off.

“Just what?”

“My wife, she’s sick and I am supposed to be home right now, to help her with some things…”

He’s got a pregnant wife? How many months is she now? Wow! I just love pregnant women, there’s always these kinda glow around them.

It makes then round and especially beautiful, I always imagine how I would look when I’m pregnant too.

But I don’t wanna find out yet, I still have a lot of things to do, I wanna enjoy my youth alone…having a baby now is so out of the question.

“…her due date is drawing near and she’s getting lazy these days” he concluded and chuckled lightly.

“Well, you should go be with her then” I said.

“Really? Then…what about her?” he asked, nodding towards the woman.

I glanced at her, she smiled at me as doc Kale is doing his stuff, I smiled back politely and turned back to the driver.

“Don’t worry about her, I’ll stay with her” I told him.

He smiled. “Thank you, you’re good person and I feel lucky to meet you”

I blushed.

“Er..thank you, I guess”

I reached for my bag, searched in and pulled out my purse, I pulled out a few notes and stretched it at him.

“Here’s $20, you didn’t drive me to my destination…”

“Don’t worry, I’m not gonna take your money”

“Huh? Why?” I asked.

He smiled.

“It’s hærd to come by kind people like you these days, forget about the money…take it as a token of thanks from me”

“But…”

“It’s fine, Miss, I should head home.. God bless!” he quickly turned and rushed out before I could speak.

I stared at the money a few seconds, sighed and shoved it back in my bag.

He’s calling me a good person, whereas he’s the good person, other drivers would have left me immediately I stepped out of their car…but he didn’t, he came with me to the hospital.

“Miss” doc Kale called my attention.

I turned immediately, doc Kale is done cleaning and bandaging the woman’s knees and elbows, the woman leaned back on the bed as though she’s not ready to leave yet.

“Doc, is everything ok with my aunt?” I asked.

“Yeah, but she has an old knee injury that flared up when she scraped her knees, she’s gonna be fine after a hour rest” he said.

My eyes moved to the woman, she was typing on her phone but paused and lifted her head when she felt my eyes on her..she smiled at me and I smiled back.

“Are you not gonna prescribe some drugs, like painkillers for her?” I asked doc Kale.

“Yeah, I’ll be right back” he answered and left the room.

I walked closer to the woman and sat on the stool beside the bed, I folded my hands on my laps and smiled at her.

“Ma’am, are you feeling better now?” I asked her.

“Yes, my dear” she answered, she dropped her phone and gave me her undivided attention.

“Don’t worry, the doctor said you need a hour rest… I’ll board a cab for you and make sure you get home safely”

She shook her head quickly.

“No, no, you shouldn’t bother about that” she said.

“Why? You’re injured, I can’t let you leave on your own”

She stared at me for a few moments, then reached for my hands and squeezed them reassuringly.

“I won’t be leaving on my own, dear, I just messaged my nephew and he’s gonna come pick me up soon”

“Oh”

“Yes, you just have to keep me company until he gets here” she said.

I nodded, thankfully she’s not a petty woman and doesn’t wanna hold me accountable for the accident…I just hope her nephew would be as generous as her.

“You’re a beautiful and kind girl, my nephew’s taken else I would have matchmake you two”

I chuckled nervously at her words, my cheeks flamed up in embarrassment.

Like seriously, is it written on my forehead that I’m single?

Well, I’m single but not searching, I don’t know but I have a feeling I’ve met the one…. Jayden?

“Your parents gave birth to a pure soul, you look like you’re hærd working too, wait, you were just coming back from work right?”

“I…”

“Of course, you looked so professionally dressed up and…”

God! This woman is gonna talk the living day light outta me!
