Unfulfilled promises
Season 2
Episode 26

Her aunt was overjoyed to see them but
they noticed her eyes were red rimmed
from crying They greeted her husband
who looked sad.
Oleng wondered what was wrong Her
aunt’s husband got up then and informed
them that he had been about going out
before they came in and excused himself
Aunt Vien saw him to the door and came
back to the room There was silence.
Eric took Oleng’s cold hand in his before
bringing out the piece of paper that had
shattered their peace for days.

“Someone sent this typed message to
Oleng a week ago.” He handed the paper
to her after speaking solemnly.
Her aunt took the piece of paper and after reading it, it slowly fell on the floor frI’m her numb fingers She closed her eyes and
winced as if in pain.

“Is it true?” Oleng finally asked in almost a whisper.
Her aunt kept her quiet for a long time
Oleng ran out of patience and yelled at
her, not minding her sleeping daughter
in,side. “Is it true?”
Tears slowly rolled down her aunt’s eyes
as she nodded slowly with her eyes still
closed.

“My God!” Eric and Oleng said in unison
They were struck dumb by her admission.
Only Aunt Vien’s sniffles could be heard
“My husband sent the note to…you. I
didn’t know how to tell…you because the
guilt was killing me I told my husband
everything some days ago He came up…
with the idea when I told him I couldn’t
dare to tell you face to face He typed it
himself and…sent it when I couldn’t stop
my hands from shaking with fear at your
reaction…to the news. It…it was your
mum’s idea…she…she planned with the
doctor and nurses…to tell you the baby
died,” she confessed brokenly.
“What happened to him? Was he killed?”
Eric uneasily questioned.

“No!” she vehemently denied. “Linda gave
him up for adoption.”
“No!” Oleng shook her head from side to
side slowly Eric left her hand and held her
instead She looked as if she was going to
faint. “No,” she repeated in his arms, still
looking dumbstruck.

“I begged her I pleaded with her not to do
it to you but she refused She said it was
for the best She didn’t want the child to
be a hindrance to you She wanted you to
go back to school and achieve something
for yourself and not be saddled with a
baby Believe me, I pleaded with her to
give me the baby I swore to her that I
would take care of him for you but she
refused You know she is very strong
willed My own sister went behind me to
plan everything I had no say in the
matter By the time I went back to the
hospital after I went to prepare something for you to eat, the baby was gone I called
her and quarreled bitterly with her but it
was too late….Oleng, it was for your own
good,” she narrated after composing
herself.

Oleng stood up in anger. “My own good…
my own good? Aunt Vien, how could you?
I trusted you I trusted you yet you
connived with my mother to cause me so
much pain Do you know how I felt when I
lost that baby? I felt like a failure For five
years I was branded a barren woman yet
you didn’t dim it fit to tell me my baby
didn’t die, at least to prove to people I
wasn’t barren You know how I suffered
those years yet you kept mute about it I
will never forgive you,” she lashed out
furiously, her eyes blazing fire.

Aunt Vien got up immediately to try to
hold her but she pushed her hands away
angrily. “Oleng please, I tried I went to
look for him Remember that time I went
to Lagos for a week, I went to look for him but I couldn’t find him I wanted to bring
him back to you but I couldn’t find him I
know had I told you then, it would have
destroyed your marriage with Dave I
knew Dave would never have accepted
him but I still went to look for him I
couldn’t find him Please believe me,” her
aunt pleaded with passion.
“Why should I? Everything you’ve told me
since I came to your house all seem like
lies now How could you keep such a
priceless thing from me? How?” Oleng
looked puzzled.

“Oleng, please I’m very sorry. I have lived
with this guilt for thirteen years Please It
was later I realized the mistake I made I
shouldn’t have allowed my sister bully me
into such Recrimination is futile now but
please, Oleng, find it in your heart to
forgive me. Please,” she said desperately.

“Forgive you? I will never forgive you for
as long as I live You’re just like your
sister; mean, devious, conniving, evil, self-
centered people It ends with you because
I, Erica and my son, Eric will never be like
that Not while I still have breath in me
You might as well forget about me
because you’ll never see me again,” she
yelled and rushed in,side to get her baby.
“No! Oleng, please,” her aunt cried and sat
on a chair.

Eric stood up abruptly.
“Eric, please, help me plead with her I
thought also that it was for her own good
I didn’t know it would result to this.
Please.”
“You should have told her before now,
especially when she was looking for a
child,” he admonished gently.

“I didn’t know…I didn’t know…I didn’t
know how to tell her Please understand I
felt it wasn’t the right time also with so
much going on around her I sent that
message now because I know both of you
are back together again. You can both
look for him together Dave wouldn’t have
done that. Please understand.”
“I’m trying to understand Believe me I
am, because right now I feel like looking
for your sister and making her life a living
hell for what she did to Oleng and my
son.” He looked barely restrained.
Just then, Oleng came out with her crying
daughter Aunt Vien got up and rushed to
hold her but she shook her off.
“Please, Oleng. Please I’m so sorry I
thought it was for your own good Please
don’t abandon me.” She followed her
niece to the door.
“Please Eric, I’ll be waiting for you in the
car,” she told him and opened the door
Her aunt held her hand but she viciously
threw it away.

“Leave me alone! I hate you!” she
scre-med amidst Erica’s wails and rushed
out, banging the door.
That cut her aunt like a knife She
crumbled to the floor, weeping profusely
Eric, despite his anger couldn’t help
feeling sorry for her He squatted beside
her dejected figure “Give her time. You
would do the same in such a situation.
Just pray we find him.”

She nodded slowly and took his hand
“How can we find him?” he questioned.
“I don’t know. All I know is that he was
adopted by one Mr and Mrs Adeniran.
They took him to Lagos When I went to
the address we were given, I was told they were deceased, but they didn’t know the whereabouts of Eric. It’s as if his
supposed relatives took hold of their
property and threw him out since he
wasn’t a biological son. No one knows
where he is.”
Eric clenched and unclenched his fists
“I’m sorry,” she said and he nodded.
“What’s the address?” he asked bringing
out his IPHONE 11 PRO and she got up to bring
her PHONE and rattled it to him.

He stood up and opened the door
“Eric,” she called but he didn’t turn
around. “Please tell Oleng how sorry I am
and I pray you find him.”
He nodded and went out He saw Oleng
was quite calm and collected in the car
when he joined her Erica was sleeping
again in her arms.
“I think we should drive straight to the
airport and book a flight to Lagos or
better still, drive down there,” she
suggested gazing straight ahead
“Oleng, please be reasonable. It’s past
midday We’re going back to Port
Harcourt now. Tomorrow we will head for
Lagos.”

“Don’t you dare tell me to be reasonable!
How can I be reasonable at a time like
this?” she raged turning to flash eyes of
anger at him. “My son, my baby is out
there. He’s probably lonely or something
and needs me, his mother.”
“Oleng,” he began.
“No. Don’t Oleng me How can I even
expect you to understand? After all, you
impregnated me and went to the States
You haven’t even seen him You didn’t
see how small and beautiful he was So
how can I expect you to act fatherly
towards him?” she ranted.
“Oleng, shut up! Stop this now!” he firmly
told her and she burst into tears.

He held her, careful not to upset his
sleeping daughter
“How could Aunty Vien be so cruel? Even
when Dave’s family threw me out of his
house, she couldn’t even tell me I’m so
scared, Eric. I’m scared we might be too
late. I’m scared he’s dead,” she sobbed.
“Please don’t say that. He’s alive. You
told me you have a gut feeling that he’s
alive Don’t give up on that motherly
instinct now. We’ll find him. I promise,” he
calmed her.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for what I said just
now. I…” she sniffed.

“It’s alright, sunshine You were right
anyway but just because I didn’t see him
doesn’t mean I don’t feel him I was
shattered when you told me he died at
birth but now that we know he didn’t,
there is hope. You’ve got to pull yourself
together. He’s going to need you. You’ve
got to be strong for him, Erica and I. No
more tears. Alright?”
She nodded and sat up cleaning her tears
with her hands.
“Good. Now we’ll go back to Port Harcourt
and prepare for the journey to Lagos
because we might spend some time there
searching for him though I pray it’ll be a
short one I’ll call my boss for a casual
leave and I suggest you do the same
Okay?”

“Okay. I love you,” she said with so much
pent up emotion.
He was stunned After all the while of hide
and seek rom-ntic game they had been
playing, she had finally admitted it first
What an emotional day this was!
“I love you too, sunshine Always,” he
replied, gathered her in his hands and
k-ssed her, ignoring onlookers.
