Poisoned Love

(The Break-up)

Episode 7

Writer: Faith Lucky

Sophia had ran out of the garden and settled by

the roadside. Tears dripped down her cheeks for

a moment, but she quickly wiped them off.

Finally, she was done with Steven. He was now

out of her life forever. But she couldn’t tell why

she was beginning to feel regrets.

Well, why should she? Avoiding him was the best

thing to do and there should be no room for

regrets.

Steven wasn’t the right guy for her, she thought.

She started pacing along the road, hoping a cab

would drive by soon.

Just then, she started hearing gunshot from

seemingly everywhere and the wh0le place

turned crowdy and noisy with people running

hectar sectar.

A stone flew above her head and she said

panicked.

What was happening? Was it a riot?

She thought of running away but became

paranoid as to where to run to. She was

becoming transfixed with fear.

The wh0le corners seemed dangerous to run to.

Men with sticks and dangerous weapons could

be seen hitting each other. The gunshots were

becoming nearly constant.

Sophia was beginning to hyperventilate.

She heard her name from behind and saw Steven

running towards her.

God!

She felt so relieved; like, so relieved.

“Sophia, are… are you alright?” Steven asked at

the top of his voice, trying to get through the

noise of the crowd.

“y… Yes, I am”.

He took her hands and tried running away with

her, but was disrupted by the appearance of a

man with a weapon – a knife.

Steven stood in front of Sophia and tried getting

rid of the man.

He attacked them with the knife and Steven

managed to give him a kick.

They got involved in a fist fight and Steven

sustained a scratch on his arm from the knife.

He was later able to defeat the man and without

hesitation, he ran away with Sophia.

They ran back to the garden and hid behind a

safe corner – at least it was safe for the

meantime.

He mo-ned and sat on the floor, starring at his

injured arm.

The knife had cut across it and it was now

bleeding.

Sophia was appalled as she crouched beside him

and held his arm.

“I’m… I’m so sorry. Does it hurt?” she asked

fearfully and noticed her question was inane.

Why wouldn’t it hurt?

She brought out her handkerchief and tried

cleaning up the blood.

“Sophia, I’m fine. You don’t have to worry about

me” Steven said, noticing how perplexed she

was, but Sophia gave no reply.

The handkie had become bloodstained, but the

bleeding still continued.

She tore round the tip of her gown and tried

using it on the arm.

“Sophia, I said I’m fine…”

“no, you’re not!” Sophia cut in and forced her

hand away from Steven’s who was trying to

prevent her from using the cloth.

There was so much worry in her eyes;

accompanied with an uncanny concern.

A light smile ran across his cheeks, but was

shortly washed away by a string of pain from his

injury.

“I never knew you could be this caring” he said in

a flaccid voice.

Sophia starred at him and focused on what she

was doing.

She succeeded in controlling the bleeding and

after that, she loosened her hair scalf from her

hair and tied it around the arm.

At that point, she heaved a sigh of relief, like

something important had been done.

“thanks,” mumbled Steven and Sophia replied

with a nod and sat next to him on the floor.

They both remained silent for a while, gazing at

the dark, listening to the distant gunshots and

wailings and hoped it would come to an end

soon enough.

“don’t worry, we’ll be fine” Steven said and

placed his hand on her thighs, but quickly

withdrew it as he grunted in pain of stretching

the arm.

“I think you’re the one who needs more of that

encouragement” Sophia chuckled and replied.

“does it still hurt?” she asked after a short pause.

“well, what do you think? It wasn’t treated by a

qualified nurse or anything”.

“Oh, seriously?” Sophia replied and they both

laughed.

“but, thanks anyway. It made me feel better” he

added.

They jumped into a tranquil mood again, both

feeling nervous.

They felt like talking to each other but somehow,

they both felt shy and reluctant.

Soon, the noises reduced and seemed to have

died off.

Sophia and Steven got on their feet and peeped

outside. The wh0le place seemed calm and

quiet.

They headed for his car which was parked

outside the garden, but to their outmost surprise,

the wind screen had been broken and damaged.

It was definitely a result of the riot.

Steven tried starting up the car, but couldn’t.

They were stuck.

They couldn’t reach anyone on phone either

because there was no network coverage at that

time.

“what do we do?” Sophia asked, looking worried.

“your home isn’t far away from here. I can take

you home” Steven replied and tried closing the

car door and in the process, stressed his injured

arm again.

He grunted in pain and leaned on the car while

Sophia hurried to him.

“Steven, are you alright?” she asked with fright

and held the arm.

“Oh, God! I think you need to see a doctor”.

Steven tried absorbing the pain for a while.

“your home isn’t far away”, he replied. “I think

it’d be best if we walked”.

“what? B… But, you can’t walk in this condition”.

“Sophia, it’s my arm that’s injured, not my legs”

he said and left the car.

“but, Steven, you might…”

“Sophia, I’m fine. Let’s go.”

He gave a quick full look at her and his eyes

caught the sight of her thighs which had become

fully exposed. It was as a result of the group

part she had torn from her gown.

Her hair had become shagged, but still… She

looked more beautiful.

“okay, fine. Let’s go” she broke into his thoughts

and they started on their way.

They got to a point where a car had driven by on

a high speed and Sophia gripped Steven’s hand

in fear.

“don’t worry, Sophia. We’ll be fine” Steven

reassured her.

They continued walking in silence, probably

because they didn’t want to ar-use attention.

They just hoped they would be able to arrive

home safely.

They arrived at the gate of Sophia apartment

and stopped in front of it.

“okay, go in. I’m sure your mom must be pretty

worried”, Steven said to her.

“but, what about…”

“don’t worry about me. Please, Sophia. I’ll be

fine” Steven interrupted her and released her

hand so she could go in.

Oh, that was when they even realized they had

been holding hands the wh0le time.

“okay, then. Goodnight”, she said, doubtfully.

“goodnight. Bye”, Steven replied as he winked at

her and left.

Sophia stood still, starring at his back until he

was finally lost in the darkness.

*

She sat on her bed, putting on her pajamas. She

was feeling warm as a result of the warm

shower she had just taken.

She held an empty cup of coffee in her hand and

soon, her mother walked in with some drugs.

“how’re you feeling now, honey?” Mrs Kate asked

as she sat next to Sophia on the bed.

“I told you, mom. I’m fine. You don’t have to

worry about me” Sophia replied.

“fine. Just make sure you take these drugs

before going to bed, okay? Are you sure you

don’t need any other thing? Maybe, some food,

drink… ”

” mom, I’m fine. Thanks “.

“okay, goodnight”, Mrs Kate replied with a

parting k-ss and left.

Sophia leaned against the wall of her bed and

sighed.

She recalled the day’s events and thought about

the negative part that could have happened.

She reached for her phone and purse and

brought out a piece of paper from it; a piece of

paper that contained a phone number.

As much as she might not want to, she couldn’t

help but think about Steven. She was so worried

about him.

She ins**ted the number into her phone and

before she dialled it, she hesitated.

Was it necessary for her to call!? wouldn’t that

look too intruding? And again, calling him would

also mean for him to have her contact.

Well, she couldn’t help it. She had to make sure

he was alright.

Besides, he had sustained the injury trying to

protect her.

Steven was also in his bedroom, his mother

sitting beside him, watching him take his

medications.

His mother had called for a doctor and his arm

had been properly treated and covered.

“thanks, mom” Steven said as he handed the

glass of water back to her.

“Steven, are you sure you don’t recognize any of

them? One of those rascals has to pay for this”,

Mrs Damola rasped.

“come on, mom. I’m fine now. It’s just a minor

injury”.

“they’re so lucky you’re not really in a bad state.

Else, I would have turned down the earth just to

fish them out and make sure they pay dearly

with their lives together with the rest of their

families”.

Steven bursted into laughter. He couldn’t help

but laugh at his mother’s threats.

“mom, you’re really so funny. You don’t have to

turn down the earth, okay? I’m fine”.

Mrs Damola played run his hair and smiled.

“okay. Get some sleep. Well see tomorrow,

okay?”

“goodnight, mom” Steven said his mother gave

him a peck and left.

Immediately she left, his phone awakened with a

ring.

It was a strange number.

He picked the call and was curious to know

whom was calling.

“hello?” it was a female voice.

Of course, he could recognize that voice from

anywhere; even from a thousand miles away.

He leaned on the wall of his bed and smiled,

nervously.

“Sophia?” he called, sounding surprised.

“uhm, hi. How’re you doing?” she asked.

“I’m fine. I’m good”.

“I uhm… Just wanted to know if you got home

safely”.

“yes, I did. I’m home”.

There was a short pause.

“So, how’s your arm?” Sophia asked.

“it’s perfectly fine now. All it needed was just a

proper treatment. I’m okay”.

“okay. So,, will you be strong enough to be in

school tomorrow?”

“of course,, I will. I’m not a weakling”.

“really?” Sophia chuckled. “okay, get some sleep.

I just wanted to make sure you were home.

Goodnight”.

“Sophia,” he called and paused. “thank you”.

Sophia delayed before giving a reply.

“bye,” she muttered and the call ended.

She felt so much relived after making the call.

She drew a pillow to herself and placed her head

on it.

She wished her life could be that perfect; that

loving. The last few hours she had spent with

Steven had seemed to be the best hours of the

year.

Although, she had been scared, but she could

remember the comfort she had felt at that

moment. She remembered that time they held

hands together.

She wished that never had to come an end.

Treasure’s words were almost driving in again,

but she waved them aside. She didn’t want to

think about them at that moment.

And as she finally slept off, she didn’t realize

there was a half smile on her face.

Episode 9

It was a bright day.

Sophia got off her mom’s car and before she

emerged into the school building, she cogitated

for a while.

She wandered what the day would have in store

for her. She just hoped nothing bad would ruin it.

She got into the school building and halfway, she

ran into Steven who was putting on a

headphone.

“Oh, hi Sophia” Steven greeted as he unplugged

his headphone.

“hi”, Sophia replied and sighed. His arm looked

better.

“wereyou able to retrieve your car?” she asked,

still standing in a face to face position with him.

“yes, I did. I was able to get it to a mechanic”.

“okay. It’s a good thing everything’s been

settled. I need to go” Sophia said and tried

walking away, but was stopped by Steven.

“uhm… Sophia,” he called. “about last night…”

“listen, Steven, that’s in the past. So, I suggest

we just forget about it” she replied and turned

around to go.

“So… Your opinion still stands?” Steven said to

her back. “you still want me to stay away?”

Sophia stood still, almost not knowing what to

say. She felt very sad.

But she had to do the necessary. Steven was a

cheat and she couldn’t let him play on her like

the others.

“yes, I do” she replied and left without turning

back to look at him.

As she walked away, she felt her blood drying up

from within.

She felt empty.

She didn’t even notice Treasure was coming in

front of her and she had almost brushed her

while walking away.

“Sophia! Are you alright?” Treasure asked,

surprised at her absent-mindedness.

“sorry, I’m fine” replied Sophia with less

enthusiasm.

“well, you don’t look fine to me. Do you feel

sick?”

“I’m okay, Treasure” Sophia said with a faint

smile.

“So, how was your date?” she asked.

“it was fine”.

“fine? Like, nothing happened?”

“yes, nothing”.

“hm. That sounds good”.

“Treasure, I’ll catch up with you later. I need to

check on something in the library” Sophia said

and left without waiting for a reply from

Treasure.

She walked dejectedly, looking like someone who

was lost in thoughts.

Perhaps, she was.

She couldn’t believe she had finally settled things

over with Steven. He was never going to pester

her again.

But, was that really what she wanted?

Two ladies appeared in front of her and blocked

her way. She was surprised.

She tried ignoring them by walking away but they

still followed her and stood firmly in front of her.

“hi”, Sophia said perfunctorily. “is there a

problem?”

“and give me one good reason why there

shouldn’t be” one of the ladies snapped.

It was Michelle.

“I heard you went out with my boyfriend

yearsterday. And please, don’t tell me you have

no idea Steven’s my boyfriend “.

” Oh, “Sophia thought.

She quickly concluded it was Michelle.

“is that seriously the reason you stopped me? To

ask me about your boyfriend’s activities? Well,

don’t you think you’re questioning the wrong

person?”
“hey, listen to me. I’m not here for jokes, okay?

The only reason I’m not smashing your face right

now is only because I don’t want to ruin my new

nails. Just in case you’re one of all these cheap

sloths that can’t think of any other guy apart

from mine, then let this be a warning to you.

Stay away from Steven, because the next time I

approach you, it isn’t going to be a warning “.

Sophia scoffed and tried not to laugh.

“just take a look at you. Aren’t you ashamed?

Doing what a guy is supposed to do for you? If

Steven really loves you, then you shouldn’t be

going around, acting like his officer. You

shouldn’t be this scared…”

“hey, keep that trap of yours shut!” Patricia cut

in, pointing a finger at Sophia. “you have no right

to speak that way to my friend. She’s only trying

to protect her boyfriend from gold diggers like

you!”

“Oh, really?” Sophia asked with laughter in her

mouth. “well, why don’t you tell your friend to

ask her boyfriend to explain to her what exactly

he sees in me that makes him run after me?”

And with that, Sophia walked away.

“Patricia, who’s that brat?” Michelle asked with a

grin.

Sophia felt angry at Michelle’s indelicate

attitude. She wished she had slapped her in the

face while they were talking.

She got into the library and took the book she

wanted and when she was about leaving, she met

Oliver at the entrance.

“hi,, good morning” she greeted, but Oliver didn’t

give a reply immediately.

He seemed to turn taciturn when he saw her and

Sophia couldn’t understand why he looked that

way.

“hi,” he replied icily.

It was so unlike him. He was always so lively

whenever he was around Sophia and that was

why Sophia couldn’t understand his sudden

calmness.

“I need to hurry up to class. We’ll talk later”

Sophia said and tried walking away.

“uhm… Hold on,” Oliver called her back and

brought out an invitation card from his pocket.

“I’m having a birthday party tonight and I was

hoping you could be in attendance”.

“Sophia collected the card and starred at it.

Although she had been hearing rumors of his

birthday party for sometime, but she was

surprised he was just inviting her for her it.

“okay. I’ll be there”, she replied and left with it..
