💊 Jasmine’s POV 💊
“What’s going on here!” A soldier who just walk out into the room asked jerking me out of my fantasy world
The soldier separated Alex and Ryan and both of them continued panting as they stood on opposite sides of the soldiers
“You guys are supposed to be sleeping not fighting!” The soldier yelled
“Am gonna sleep in your room tonight Andrew cause I’ll be damn crazy if I sleep with this asshole” Alex said and walked out of the room angrily and Andrew followed him
“Why are you just standing stil, let’s go” Emma said and we both left the room too
We entered our and I sat on the bed
What was wrong with me!
I should’ve tried to stop them from fighting but instead I was just standing still like a mannequin emersed in my own fantasy
Emma’s phone suddenly rang jerking me out of my thoughts
She picked up her phone and her countenance changed on seeing the caller
“Excuse Jasmine, I need to receive this call” she said and walked into the bathroom locking the door
I wonder what call it is that she couldn’t pick up right here
I shrugged it off and laid on the bed to sleep

We all waited in the meeting room waiting for Captain Ameer cause he called us for a morning meeting before he showed us the hospital wing
Moments later he walked in with some group of people
“Apologies for keeping you all waiting but I bumped into this NGO on my way here and they wanted to greet Doctor Alex” Captain Ameer said
“Good morning, my name is Hamdiya Abdullah, the President of this NGO and it’s a privilege to finally meet you Doctor Alexander Sanchez” the leading lady said as he shook Alex’s hand
“My pleasure” Alex’s said
“Who are these people?” Emma asked
“We are an NGO that supports orphan children and provide for people who have unluckily become victims of this war and Doctor Alexander Sanchez here is our main donator” Hamdiya explained
I wondered how Alex was spending all his money since his cost of living is just average but I guess this is what he’s being using his money for
He’s been helping orphan children and victims of war with his hard earned money
Handsome, skilled, caring and humble, isn’t this guy just amazing
We all exchanged pleasantries and the NGO left
“Now let’s take you guys to the hospital wing” Captain Ameer said as he walked out and we all followed him
“The hospital wing is just newly set up just like this camp and the only patients there are those wounded from the war” The Captain said as we walked to the hospital wing
We walked into the hospital and it’s not bad
It’s nothing compared to our National hospital but it will serve it’s purpose well
We all looked around and checked on the patients already admitted, they are recovering well
“Lots of people are coming from downtown up here today to get checked up cause it’s been awhile since we last had a doctor in this vicinity, follow me, I’ll take you to where you’ll be attending to them” the Captain said and we followed him to a large empty room in another section of the hospital wing
“Here’s where you guys will be attending to the any patients that comes. How many of you will be seeing the patients that comes so that my guys will know how many seats to arrange here” Captain asked
“Jasmine and I will be attending to patients from my team since Andrew and Jasmine are just specialized in some areas” Alex said
“What about you?” Captain asked Ryan
“Me and my surgical assistant too, Nathan” he replied
“I guess we’ll be preparing four tables then, then rest of can help them out and also check on the admitted patients. People are already coming in to get checked up so I’ll give you a few minutes to get ready before you guys start attending to them” Captain Ameer said and we all agreed
We went back to where the gloves and face masks were kept and we wore them
Alex moved closed to me while I was wearing my gloves
“Be careful, you never know the kind of disease your patients and carrying” he said and I nodded
“Sure, you should be careful too” I said
“Of course I’ll be careful, am one of the world best Neurosurgeon, I don’t make mistakes”
“Are you seriously bragging right now?” I asked and he laughed
“Just be careful” he said

War zone or not, I do know one thing for sure, this place drives the energy out of someone
Am so exhausted right now
Being attending to patients for hours yet more people keeps trooping in to get checked up
Those that need to be admitted in the hospital was admitted and others were given injections and drugs
It’s already getting dark so we told the rest of them to come back tomorrow
“Exhausted?” Megan asked as she walked up to me
“And famished” I replied and she smiled
“The captain ordered some food for us, let’s go eat” she said
“You go, I’ll join you guys soon, I need to wash my hands”

“We’ll be in the meeting room and be fast or you won’t meet any food, we are all hungry after all” she said as she started walking away
“Keep my food safe Meg!” I yelled and I heard her laugh
I threw the gloves I was wearing into the bin and went to the middle of the camp where a tap was
I washed my hands and face and I suddenly heard someone whimpering
“Who’s there?” I asked as I looked around and I sighted a little boy sitting on the ground not too far from where I was
I walked up to him and squatted beside him
“Hey what are you doing here?” I asked but he didn’t reply, he just continued sobbing
“Did you come to get checked up?” I asked and he nodded
“You’ll have to come back tomorrow, we aren’t attending to anyone again till tomorrow. Where are your parents?” I asked and he bursted into tears
“What’s wrong? Did I say something wrong?” I asked worried
“Dead, they are dead” the boy said amidst tears and I felt bad for him
“Am sorry dear” I said as I hugged him
“Your body is freaking hot” I said as I touched his forehead
Then I noticed a swelling at the side of his neck
“When did your neck start swelling?” I asked but he kept quiet
“We must get you checked up right away” I said as I held his hand
“Ahhh!” He he screamed
“What’s wrong?” I asked
“My hand, when you held it, it was painful, I have a hard too and am just so weak and tired” he said weakly
This is odd, I’ve never come across a patient with this kind of symptoms
“You’ll be fine dear, let’s get you to the hospital”
I met Alex, Ryan, Nathan and Emma in the hospital wing
“Who’s the kid?” Emma asked
“Met him outside, he’s really sick so I brought him for a check up” I said
“We are already done for the day Jasmine, take the boy back” Ryan said
“I can’t take him back when I know he needs our help” I said
“What’s wrong with him?” Alex asked
“He’s temperature is skyhigh, he has this swelling on his neck” I said as I point at the swelling “He says he has a headache, he feels weak too and I think he has muscle ache as well”
“High temperature, swollen neck, headache, fatigue, muscle ache, no it can’t be” Alex said
“What’s wrong?” I asked
“Step away from the boy Jasmine” Ryan said and I looked at both of them surprised
“What’s going on?” I asked
“You didn’t touch him right?” Alex asked looking scared
“I did touch him, is that bad?” I asked
“It’s freaking bad you slow-witted girl, the boy has the Black death!” Ryan yelled
“Black death?”
“Bubonic plague, also known as Black death” Alex said “Its the deadliest pandemic recorded in human history, it once claimed over 200 million lives, it’s very deadly and it can be transmitted by contact”
And it was then I remembered, the bubonic plague, one of the deadliest plague in history, I read about it once back in college
How could I have forgotten
“Am I…… am I going to die?” I asked with my trembling voice
“Definitely, it has no exact cure” Ryan said bluntly
“No, Jasmine you aren’t going to die, I won’t let you die” Alex said but I wasn’t convinced
I could sense the fear in his voice too
“I am going to die” I said as tears rolled down my face

💊 Jasmine’s POV 💊
I sat in the quarantined room beside the boy’s bed
He’s unconscious and I’ve fixed an IV drip on him
Alex didn’t want to believe I have the bubonic plague till a test proves him wrong so they took my blood along with the boy’s for the test
So for the maintime, am quarantined with the boy and we can’t come in contact with anyone
There was a knock on the door and I turned to see Megan standing outside the glass door
I walked closer to the door and she looked at me with tears in her eyes
“Am going to die aren’t I?” I asked
“You aren’t going to die” she said and again, I knew it was a lie
I could sense the fear in her voice too

“Alex and Emma have taken you guy’s blood to get it tested at the military headquarters since the necessary apparatus to carry out the test is not present here and am sure they are going to bring good news, you won’t die Jas” Megan assured and I nodded
“Thanks Meg” I said
“I need to go now, I need go check on the patients, be strong okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be strong” I said and she smiled and then walked away
I sat back on the chair beside the boys bed
“I am strong” I keep repeating to myself
Moments later, I heard some movements outside and I turned to see Alex standing outside the glass door
“Alex” I called as I walked up to the glass door
“What was the result of the test?” I asked but I didn’t need an answer cause the expression on his face says it all
“I have the bubonic plague don’t I?” I asked as tears rolled down my face
“Isn’t this great, my first day in Afghanistan and I’ve got a deadly plague, Am really going to die in this godforsaken country”
💊 Alex’s POV 💊
“You aren’t going to die Jasmine” I said
“Liar!” She said “I can tell you are lying, I can sense the fear in your voice and to be honest, am scared too, am so scared right now, I don’t want to die” she cried as she slowly sat on the floor
“Jasmine, Jasmine look at me” I called as I slowly squatted outside the glass door and she looked at me with tears in her eyes
“Am Alexander Sanchez and you know how skilled I am right?” I asked and she nodded
“I’ll save you, I’ll find a cure and I’ll save you, for the main time, just lay on your bed and rest, cause you’ll be feelling weak and nauseous soon”
“Am already……. everywhere is suddenly so blurry” she said weakly and then suddenly collapsed on the floor
“Jasmine!!!” I yelled as I tried to open the door and someone held my hand
“Emma”
“Don’t be stupid Alex, if you go inside there you’ll contact the plague too” she said
“But Jasmine, she’s unconscious” I said worried
“I’ve called Megan and Susan to come take care of her, they are getting dressed now so they don’t contact the plague, so for now, come with me, we need to talk” she said as she walked out and I followed her
“What’s wrong?” I asked immediately we got outside
“What’s wrong? Everything is wrong, the bubonic plague is deadly and you know it, we can’t afford this plague breaking out” she said
“I know and that’s why they are quarantined”
“But you’ll keep going there, you’ll keep trying to save her and in the end, you may contact it too and I can’t let that happen” she said
“Then what should I do?” I asked
“Let them die”
“What!” I exclaimed
“Let them die and the plague dies with them” she said
“No one is dying Emma, I won’t let anyone die” I said and walked away
💊 Ryan’s POV 💊
I laid on the bed in my room and I heaved a sigh
“I wish it was Alex that got the plague and not Jasmine”
I took my phone and I decided to call Dad to know how he’s doing
“Good evening Dad” I greeted immediately he picked up the phone
🗨️ “Is Alexander Sanchez dead?” He asked
“You didn’t even reply my greetings”
🗨️ “Do not call me unless it’s to announce the news of Alexander Sanchez’s death” he said and ended called
“Wow! What a strict father I’ve got” I said as I dropped the phone
And then, an idea clicked in my head
“Perfect!” I said as I quickly stood and left the room to the hospital wing
I got there and I met Susan
“Is anyone else here?” I asked
“No, am the only one, the rest of them are in the meeting room trying to find a cure for the bubonic plague” she replied
“Is there anything I can help you with?” She asked
“No, just don’t let anyone know I came here” I said and she nodded
I went to one of the rooms and dressed in plastic overall and mask to avoid contacting the bubonic plague
Then I took an injection needle
I went into the quarantined room, both Jasmine and the boy were unconscious in their respective bed
I went to the boy’s bed and took some of his blood with the injection needle
And I left the room
“Now how am I going get this blood in contact with Alex?” I asked aloud
“Susan!” I heard Alex called from the patient’s ward
“How are the patients doing?” I heard him asked and I suddenly got an I idea
“Bingo” I said with a smile
Still with my overall, I took a cup from one of the tables and went to the washroom
I put some water in the cup and put all the blood from the needle into the cup
I throwed the injection needle into the bin and removed the plastic overall then I took the cup and went to meet Alex
💊 Alex’s POV 💊
“How is Jasmine? Is she awake?” I asked Susan
“No, she’s still unconscious” she said and I nodded
“Megan will be here soon to take care of the patients so you can go rest”
“Okay” she replied
One of the doors suddenly opened and Ryan came out holding a cup
“What are you doing here?” I asked
“Came to check on my patients, am a doctor after all” he replied
“I just didn’t know you to be a hard-working doctor”
“You trying to say am lazy?” He asked
“You know the answer to that” I said as I began to leave
“Alex” Ryan called and I turned back
And he suddenly poured the water in his cup all over my face
“What the hell is wrong with you?!!” I yelled
“Oops, slip of hand, am really sorry, you should go clean up” he said but I wasn’t convinced
It was obvious he did it deliberately but am in no mood to fight now
I walked back to my room and showered
I change into a new cloth, took my laptop and went off to Andrew’s room
I don’t plan on ever sleeping with that evil jerk
“Are you okay doctor? You look tired” Andrew asked immediately I got into his room
“I am tired but I can manage” I said as I sat on the chair and placed the laptop on the table and I started my research
“Can I help you with the research?” Andrew asked
“No Andrew, you can go to sleep” I said and he nodded

I slowly opened my eyes and it’s already morning
I fell asleep on the chair while making my researchs
I feel so tired and weak and gosh, am running a high temperature
I tried to stand up but I fell on the floor
“What’s wrong with me?”
My muscle feels so cramped and I felt my neck, it’s swollen!!
“Are you okay Alex?” Andrew asked as he came closer to me and was about touching me
“Stay away from me!!” I yelled and he flinched
“What’s wrong?” He asked
“I think….. I think I’ve got the plague” I said and he looked at me wide-eyed
