I rush out of the bathroom and follow Judah. I hasten my steps and try to catch up with him. Damn , long legs.
Judah stops by his car and open the passenger’s side door. I stop and try to catch my breath.
” Okay, i get it, you’re tall and all that shit, you don’t have to walk so fast.”
He rolls his eyes at my word and usher me to enter. Oh wait, he just open the car door for me. I thought the last guy who opened the car door for a girl died six thousand years ago. Judah must be his reincarnation. I mean Todd doesn’t open the door for you, you just gotta get in yourself.
” Get in, will you?”
” Yeah, I will Judah, breathe.” I tell him and enter his car. He sighs loudly for me to hear it and he shuts the door once I’m seated.
” So where are we going?” I ask Judah once he’s in,side. Seatbelt still not fastened.
” Somewhere, Margaret.”
” I gotta ask something… why this numerous names? From candy to Margaret and then Gwen, Julie and now Marian. Why?”
Judah looks at me briefly, his face, I can’t read it. He looks away and shakes his head.
” Thanks for the shirt though.”
” It’s kinda weird you talk a lot. I always see you as the shy girl who doesn’t have friends.” He says.
I don’t even know. Maybe because I don’t have real friends. Each time I’m with Todd and crew, I barely say anything. My ideas and theirs doesn’t match at all. And Summer she’s like the queen of the league. Maybe I’ve been too lonely for a long time I didn’t notice I’ve been talking a lot around Judah. I feel different when I’m with him, it’s like I can actually express myself and how I feel.
He might be a jerk but he always listens, even if I was saying shit.
” Why you’re quiet?” Judah asks.
” You said I talk a lot.” I whine and pout.
Judah smiles. Like a real genuine smile and I’m flattered. Hate that my heart almost beat.
” You’re cute.” He says and I’m about to blush. I bite my bottom lip and look away from him. He’s my disaster and the wh0le world can see it.
” Are you blushing?” Judah asks and I feel him look at me.
” What? Someone said something nice about me, is it bad that I blush?” I ask and look at him.
He turns to look at me, the smile is gone, replaced with a smirk.
” Yeah, right.”
” Why did you go to jail, Judah?” I ask all of a sudden.
Judah’s jaw ticks, he’s angry again. I screwed everything, this nice moment I spoilt it. I’m so dumb. He looks away from me and focus on the road. I badly want to let the topic be but I’m just a curious cat, I always want answers.
” Stop asking me personal questions, Serena.”
” Look, we’re friends and you can just tell me anything.”
He looks at me and raised his brows at my facials. It’s like I’ve grown two heads.
” What?”
” We’re not friends.” He says and I’m hurt. Really hurt. Like someone actually stabbed my heart with a knife.
” Ooh… I’m sorry I actually thought…”
” You know I don’t wanna be your friend. I always want more with you.” Judah says and I’m surprised. He’s truly bipolar, with terrible mood swings. He’s gone from angry Judah to flirty Judah.
” So you’re saying you have feelings for me?” I ask him. He turns to look at me and I smile at him.
” You know what I want with you. And you want same thing, why deny yourself what you wanted.”
” You don’t know what I want.” I state.
Judah smirks and taps his fingers on the wheel.
” Okay. Just to be clear, the offer is still open. You’re an adult and I believe you know what you want.”
” I don’t want friends with benefits.”
” You want a relationsh¡p?”
” That’s not the point.”
” Then what’s the point?”
I sigh. I’m never gonna win this argument with Judah. ” What if i fall in love with someone?”
” Then we gon’ quit it. It’s just simple. We go our separate ways and act like we did nothing, if you’re cool with that.”
” You’re insane.” I breathe out and look out the window.
Judah doesn’t say a word and the car is still on the road, not once pulling over.
” I need to go back to school, I’ve got two classes and they are kinda important to me. I don’t wanna fail.”
” Okay.”
For some awkward reasons, I’m offended. What was I even thinking? That maybe Judah will wake up one morning and change his aspect of wanting s€×ual affair with me. What do I even want? I don’t even know. Maybe I should see a therapist cause I don’t know what I actually want anymore. A part of me wants this ‘benefit thing’ and the other is telling me not to try it, that I’m just gonna get hurt just like he promised.
Does getting hurt, hurt a lot?
My phone rings and I’m snapped out of my thoughts. I pull out my phone and look at the dialer, Aunt Adele. It’s not even a phone call, she actually called me on FaceTime.
” Serena…” she squeal like a kid on the phone when I pick up. Worse part, my phone’s on loudspeaker and I actually left my earbuds at home.
She’s obviously gonna ask me about Todd.
” Hey, Aunt.” I say with a small smile.
Judah briefly looks at me.
” Ooh, whose car is that? Are you with that Toad kid again?” She asks. Judah chuckles silently, audible for me to hear it.
” Uh… it’s not Todd actually, it’s a friend.”
” A friend? A man friend?” She asks. I nod at my phone. She smirks and starts to giggle.
” His he cute? His he hot? His he a white kid? Or maybe mixed? Black, Hispanic? Is he hot?”
” Aunt.”
” I’m just curious. I mean ever since that Toad kid walked into your life, you’ve been shutting doors against men. So I’m kinda surprised you’ve got a new male friend. Now bend your phone, I gotta say hi.”
” What?” I mutter and look at Judah. He’s smirking.
” What, Marian, you’re scared I’m gonna fall in love with your aunt instead of you?” He asks and looks at me.
” Whatever.” I say.
” Was that him?” Aunt Adele asks.
” Yeah.” I gro-n and click my back camera so that she can see Judah.
” Look over, will you?” I ask Judah as i lean against the car door.
He turns to look at the camera unaware that my aunt can actually see him.
” Oh my f-ck!” She exclaims and i quickly change it to selfie camera.
” Where did you get him from you daughter of my sister?”
” What? Is he that ugly?” I ask and smirk at Judah before looking back at the camera. He scoffs.
” You should f-ck him already, he’s cute.”
” Woah… easy there aunt.” I fake a cough and look at Judah.
He smirks and face me as he whispers. ” I told you.”
I give him my middle finger.
” What! He’s hot. Really hot. How can you be close to such a man and you haven’t fantasized about him in your s€×ual world.”
” Um… I don’t know if you notice but, the phones on loudspeaker and he can hear you.”
She blinks her eyes in realization and shrug.
” Whatever.” She whispers on the phone.
” I’m only being sincere. How did you meet him? In a club?”
” Um… I gotta go Aunt, the reception is bad here.” I tell her and start to shake my phone making different noises as I hang up.
” Shit.” I mutter and drop my phone in my bag. I made sure I don’t look at Judah. He heard everything.
” Your aunt sounds nice. I’m obviously dumping you for her.”
” What? Are you f-cking serious Judah?” I ask him and look at him.
” Breathe, you’re being paranoid for nothing. I was joking, you don’t have to be jealous.”
” I’m not Jealous. You should take me to class , I really don’t want to miss it.”
” Yeah, we’re close.” He says and I look out the window. He wasn’t kidding. I can see the building close by.
” When did you reverse?”
” When you were busy checking me out.”
I roll my eyes and grab my bag. Judah parks his car and I unfasten my belt.
” Thanks for driving me around the entire city. Even If you were an assh-le the wh0le time, I enjoyed it.”
” You could just save the speech and give me a k-ss.”
I blink my eyes at him and he smirks. ” You’re getting late, Julie.”
” Yeah, Romeo.” I get out of his car and shut the door.
I wanted to call Chloe but I realize i don’t have her number. I’m ten minutes early for my class as I hurriedly walk down the hallway.
” Serena.” Someone touch my shoulder. I turn around and Bree’s smiling at me.
” Hi.”
” Hey. Just saw you entered school and I tried to keep up with you. I’ve been calling your name but you didn’t hear I think.”
” Yeah, I’m sorry, class stuff.”
” I get it. We share the same class though.” I nod as we continue walking.
” You’ve seen Todd?”
” Yeah. He left for home about thirty minutes ago. He said he needs to get ready for his family dinner.”
” Of course.”
” Look I just wanna say that…” she sighs.” I really missed you know. Summer might be my friend but you leaving the crew and not always hanging around was really sad for me. You were kinda different.”
I smile at her.” Thanks, I missed you too. But then I noticed you have Summer. She likes you a lot.”
” I doubt that sometimes.” She mutters.
” Why would you say that?”
” It’s awkward. And about Todd and Summer, it’s not what you think. They actually dated though. They dated for five months and Summer said she isn’t feeling the vibe anymore and that they should become friends. That’s how they broke up, they are just good friends I think. And a month after, you became Todd’s girlfriend.”
” That’s great.”
” Do you like the neighbor? The guy who gave you a ride?”
” No, God, no.”
” You don’t have to lie about it. I mean it’s cool, he’s attractive. Every normal girl would actually fall for him. I don’t mean it the other way though.” She sighs.
We stop at the vending machine when I see Chloe and Thomas. Chloe sees me and flash me a big smile as she strides to us. Thomas on the other hand freezes at Bree’s sight. She hasn’t noticed him or maybe she chose not to.
” Hey, Tom. Meet my friend, Bree. Bree meet…”
” Thomas.” Bree concludes for me. ” Hey.” She says to Thomas.
” Hi.” Thomas replies.
” How did you know him again?”
” I’ve seen him around and he’s actually good with debating.” Bree says.
” Thank you.” Thomas stutters.
” We’re late for class.” I announce as we leave.
……
It’s evening and I’m exhausted. I rehearse on a text to send to Todd explaining why I can’t make it to the dinner. I wanna tell him I had an accident, but that will make things worse. He will rush down to my apartment.
” I have a runny stomach and it’s terrible.” I say to myself as I type it on my phone.
” No, that’s insane.” I say and erase the text from my phone.
” I broke a leg…”
F-ck it. I shut the screen of my phone and keep it on my counter. I should be thinking of what to wear and Todd’s family dinner and not Judah. Judah, I can’t believe I’m actually wearing his tshirt. The T-shirt he asked me to keep. I smell like Judah and I hate the fact that I’m considering his friends with benefits offer. I’m going insane.
Emotionless s€×, how’s that even cool? I need to talk to someone. I hate how I feel around him. How my body responds to his mere touch. Or how his stares makes my stomach churn and I feel butterflies growl in my belly. Or how he’s flirty and straightforward and how he makes me want him and hate him at the same time.
I pick up my phone and dial aunt Adele’s number. She’s the only one I can talk to right now since Beverly isn’t around anymore. She picks up at the second ring.
” I’m angry at you for faking a poor reception.” She says when she picks up. I chuckle.
” I’m sorry aunt. I don’t wanna discuss that type of issue with you with Judah in the car.”
” So his name is Judah, huh?”
” Yeah.”
” You sound like you like him.”
” That’s why i called. I’m confused and maybe scared.”
” Scared? Why?”
” He doesn’t want a relationsh¡p with me. He wants the fling and I’m just scared of falling for him when I shouldn’t. I don’t wanna get hurt.”
” Do you want him?” She asks.
” Yeah? And I like him too.”
” Look, you don’t have to be all worked up because he doesn’t want a relationsh¡p. You’re an adult and I believe you can actually handle your feelings. If you want this fling thing with him then go for it. Sit back and enjoy the ride and watch were it takes you to.”
” But I thought s€× works with feelings, emotions.”
” Yeah.”
” And flings don’t even have those. You know I’ve never been with a man before.”
” I know that Serena. If you feel Judah is the right one to pop your cherry, then let him pop it. You don’t have to be in love with someone before you sleep with them. As long as you’re s€×ually attracted to them , then why not give it a try. You don’t like it, then put an end to it.”
I sigh.” Thanks, Aunt.”
” Don’t be. I missed you baby. A lot. One of these , we’ll visit your favorite city or country together.” She says and I smile.
” That will be cool.”
My doorbell rings.
” I gotta go, I’ve got a visitor.” I say.
” Alright, say hi to Judah.” I huff and and hang up.
I hop off the stool and go to get the door. Todd’s standing in front of me. He’s dressed in a white dress shirt and black p-nts. Damn, the dinner.
” Hey.” He greets.
” Hi.” I reply and pave way for him to enter.
He walks in and I close the door. Not going will be so unfair. I mean I promised him I was gonna go with him.
” You’re not ready?” He asks. You know I actually expected him to yell at me for leaving with Judah. But here he is, being all nice and loving.
” I uh…”
” Please, don’t tell me you’ve changed your mind. I told my family that I’m bringing my girl.”
” Oh, okay. I’ll go get dressed.”
” Thanks.”
I walk past him and go to my kitchen, i pick up my phone and go to my bedroom to change. Thank God he didn’t question me about Judah’s t-shirt that I’m wearing. I put on a mid-th-gh black lace dress and red stilettos. I brush my hair and tie it up in a ponytail. I don’t need to make up, it’s not like I’ll stay long though.
I pick up my clutch and go back to the living room. Todd’s already seated. He smiles at me and stands up.
” You look beautiful.”
” Thank you.”
With his hand on my lower back he walks me out of my house. The ride to his house was spent in awkward silence. Todd usually bring up small talks and I reply when it’s necessary and smile when it’s needed. The gates open when Todd presses the buzzer outside.
His family house reminds me of my father’s. Huge and it’s beautiful. He parks the car and I step out. Todd walks to my side and holds my wrist. We step in,side and I’m marvel at the sight. This is actually my first time here. My first time meeting his family officially. I just felt it’s not needed, it’s not like we’re gonna get married, why see his parents?
” Welcome master Todd.” A lady greets. She has a strange accent. I can’t even place it.
My shoes click on the shiny expensive wood floors as I flash the lady a smile. She smiles back.
” Where’s my parents?” Todd asks the lady.
” The dining room, waiting for your arrival.”
” Alright.”
I’m nervous as I follow Todd. We arrive at the dining room as a woman stands up with a huge smile on her face.
” Todd, darling.” She says and walks to us.
She pulls Todd into a hug and k-ss his cheek. She must be his mother. She looks at me and smiles and she pulls me to a hug too.
” She’s so beautiful, I’m Charlotte.”
” Serena.” I tell her with a small smile.
I stare at her face and something is weird about her. She’s got a faded black eye and a little cut on her lip, a faint purple bruise on her cheek. All this she tried to hide with makeup and she failed terribly. Is she being abused by her husband.
Albert clears his throat behind us. We all turn to look at him. For some reasons I’m frightened. Maybe because this is the first time I’m taking notes of his features. He’s scary and intimidating. I swallow. His face is plastered with a huge grin that I don’t like.
I’ve the urge to throw up right now. I notice Charlotte visibly shudder at the presence of her husband. Damn, he is abusing her, that could explain the bruises on her face.
Albert smiles at me, and then he says my name.
” Serena.”
