“You gave birth to twins?”

I looked down at my white off-the-shoulder top that was stained at the front and my neck where I could feel the juice she spat on my face rolling down my neck.

“Sorry, I wasn’t expecting that.”
She said when I turned to look at her, I forced a smile trying to suppress the scowl making its way to my face.

She reached for the paper towels at the end of the table and picked five.

“You had me for a second, that was a joke right?”
I collected it from her and wiped my face and neck.

“No, I had twins, Vina, for real.”
Her l-ips parted slowly like she wasn’t sure of what to say.

“I need to wash this off, I will be right back.”
I stood up and left for the restroom leaving her to process what I told her.

When I returned to the booth, she was twirling the straw in her drink.

“Wait, is she dead?”
She asked in a low tone leaning closer to the table.

“No?”
I said loud enough for the whole Diner to hear.

“Thank God.”
She exhaled in relief and relaxed in her seat.

“Then, you put her up for adoption?”
She asked before dipping her straw in her mouth.

“Yes.”
I replied calmly this time. Vina gasped in surprise.

“Where?”

“Cuba.”

“That makes sense since you gave birth in Cuba, but why did you abandon her?”

“I didn’t abandon her.”

“You abandoned her, you literally chose Kayden and gave her up.”
She said like I made the decision in a heartbeat.

“I was helpless, I couldn’t even afford diapers. I had to give Kayla a better life.”

I tried to explain.

“I couldn’t take care of them with my situation, at first I wanted to give both of them up for adoption. I love them so much and I wanted to keep them but I had nothing, I knew I couldn’t give both of them a better life. I wasn’t ready to be a mother of two kids, I had to choose. I wished I didn’t have to, but I could only take care of one.”

“Wow, that’s so unfair. Kayla will be so mad at you.”
She said and took a draw from her drink.

“Yeah, I know. I guess her new family must have given her another name.”

I mumbled with tears glistening in my eyess.

“Well, at least you didn’t abandon her in front of an orphanage in a basket.”

“Basket?”

“What? That’s where they always put them in movies, it’s either a basket or a bowl.”

I shook my head at her attempt to lighten the mood.

“I don’t blame you for anything, Chlo. You were in a tough sโ‚ฑ0t and you thought you were making the right decision for your babies.”

She said with a soft smile.

“Tell me everything that happened in Cuba.”

“Okay, ” I said with a sad smile. I sat up while she leaned closer.

“When I arrived, I crashed two days in a hotel but then I realized I needed the money I was spending on room service. I asked a middle-class family if I could rent a room in their house and they agreed. I helped with little chores and they also took good care of me. I saved some money from the cheque Adrian gave me before I left his place, so I could take care of the kids and my hospital expenses.”

“Did you know you were going to have twins?”

“Yes, I freaked out when I saw the scan. I knew right then I couldn’t do it.”
I paused and whimpered. I recalled the Doctor smiling at me while I stared at the scan with different emotions flowing through me.

I wiped my tears away with my thumb and continued. Vina was trying to blink the tears in her eyes away.

“So, my water broke while I was bathing.”

“What?”

“And only Mr. Rodriguez was home, he had to call his neighbour’s wife for help. She wore me a big sweater and they drove me to the nearest hospital.”

I paused and took a deep breath.

“When I woke up, Mrs. Rodriguez walked in with Kayden and her husband walked in with Kayla in his arms. I cried as I took both of them in each arm, they looked so cute and peaceful. Kayla’s tiny l-ips pushed out in a pout as she slept, Kayden kept moving his tiny hand as he slept.”
The tears stung my eyes as I spoke with a sad smile.

“They didn’t deserve to suffer, Vina. I brought them into this world and I had no idea what to do as I stared at them.”
I allowed the tears to roll down my cheeks.

“They were so tiny and delicate and I tried to imagine myself being a mother and a parent but I wasn’t ready. I kร—ssed their little heads and Mrs. Rodriguez took a picture. I look at that picture every day and I hate myself for making that decision, I don’t even know if she’s happy or if she is still alive and…”
I broke down burying my face in my palms.

“Hey, ” Vina called softly holding my hand.

“Kayla is fine, maybe you can get her back.”

“I can’t, once you have given a child up for adoption, you can’t go back and take the baby. It’s the law.”
I told her.

“It took me a month to make up my mind.”
I sniffled and wiped my tears away.

“Chloe, don’t put the whole blame on yourself.”
She told me, taking my hand.

“I have to tell Tristan, he’s going to hate me.”

“Of course you have to tell him and why do you care if he hates you, the last time I checked this was all his fault.”
She said and smiled at me.

“I wish I was there for you, Chlo.”

“You already did enough, Vina.”

“But why didn’t you reach out to anyone?”
I was quiet for some seconds.

“I was scared, I believed everyone close to me will hurt me and no one really cared.”

She stood up and came to sit beside me.

“I will never hurt you, Chlo, maybe not emotionally but physically, yeah.”
I laughed softly as she hugged me.

“Does she look like you?”
She asked.

“Be the judge of that, ” I brought out my phone and went through the pictures I took in Cuba.

“Wow, that’s some Daddy’s girl.”
She said collecting my phone to look at it closely.

“I must admit you are rocking the baby bump. Do women look sร—ร—y during pregnancy?”
She asked sliding through the other pictures, I shrugged.

“She is so adorable, ” she cried.

“Look, I regret every decision I made in my life, I didn’t want her to suffer in any way.”
I told her when she returned my phone.

“It’s okay.”

๐Ÿ’˜ chapter 15๐Ÿ’˜
โ€ขยฐโ€ข

The ride back to the Sanchester Mansion was filled with non-stop pep talk from Vina on how to tell Tristan about Kayla.

“You can do it!” Vina yelled after me as I walked to the house.

The maid that opened the door stared at the stain on my top before looking at my face.

I ran up the stairs to Tristan’s room, I still had to tell the whole family about Grey or maybe they already saw it on the news.

I opened the door without knocking, Tristan was typing on his phone with one hand while the other was around Kayden who was sleeping on top of him.

“Where the hell have you been and why did you switch off your phone?”
I paused at the doorway feeling the anger radiating from him.

“I’m coming from the police station, Detective Emily called.”
I said with a sighed and walked into the room closing the door behind me.

“You should have told me or someone.”
He sounded relieved as he dropped his phone.

“I’m 23, not 5.”
I leaned down and placed a kร—ss on Kayden’s head.

“What’s that on your top?”

“Lemonade, Vina spat her drink on me.”
He furrowed his eyebrows and waited for an explanation.

I waited for him to ask about what happened at the police station but he didn’t.

“Well, Grey pleaded guilty and…I saw the evidence.”
He didn’t look surprised, was I the only one shocked at this discovery?

“I knew he had some kinda hatred towards me but he didn’t have to involve you, the baby or the nice old lady that was helping you. I hope he gets a death sentence.”
He snarled.

“You should watch what you say around Kayden, he is still a kid.”
I said crossing my arms.

He looked down at Kayden and smiled.
I should tell him about Kayla now.

“Tristan, there is something you need to know about Kayden.”
I walked to the chaise lounge and sat down.

“What?” He looked tensed.

“Umm…Kayden is…”
The door burst open cutting me off.

“There you are, I have been looking all over for you.”
Nana said in a low tone trying not to wake the baby.

“Can I talk to you for some minutes?”

“Sure.”
I took a glance at Tristan before leaving the room.

I followed her into a small living room that had a vintage look. She smiled at me after we sat down, I noticed her grey hair looked shorter.

“Tea?”
She asked as she picked up the teapot that looked like an artifact.

“No, I just had a drink not too long ago.”

“How have you been, dear?”

“Good.”
I hoped she didn’t notice the monotone.

“I saw the news, I can’t believe your ex did that. Sorry about that,” she said and took a sip of her tea while I just nodded.

This was getting awkward real quick, it took everything in me not stand up and walk out of the room.

“I’m really sorry, Chloe, for what we did to you.”
She said after some seconds of silence.

“It’s fine Nana, it’s all in the past now,” I said with a small smile but deep down I was still angry for being an experiment. I had to let go of the past for the twins’ sake.

“Thank you for giving us Kayden, it must have been hรฆrd for you.”

Kayla?

“Yeah, it was. I’m sorry I have to go, I need to speak to Tristan.”
I stood up after giving her a quick hug.

I ran into Mrs. Sanchester on my way, her glossy blonde hair bounced over her shoulders as she approached me.

“Chloe!”
She pulled me into a tight hug.

“I am so glad they finally have him, he won’t hurt you or anyone again. You’re safe now.”
She told me before pulling away.

“Thank you.”
My patience was running out.

“Well, there’s a party tomorrow night. You can meet with Anita, my stylist to pick a dress, any dress you want she’ll get it for you.”

“Okay.”
I said with a forced smile, I walked away immediately a maid came to speak to her.

I gr0ร—ned when I opened the door and found him sleeping. Should I wake him? I will wait.

I woke up late the next day, I went down to get breakfast. Everyone was busy with party preparation.

I sat at the Island to feast on the pancakes and waffles the cook placed in front of me.

Nora walked into the kitchen with a tray full of muffins.

“Hey, where is Tristan?”

“He has an appointment at the hospital, he left not long ago.”

“What about Kayden?”

“He is with Nana.”

“Okay.”
I must tell him to today, I would tell him when he gets back.

Anita arrived with my dress, I tried it on before she left. Mrs. Sanchester went around making sure everything was perfect for the party.

Tristan returned late from the hospital and spent the remaining hour picking a suit while I handled Kayden that won’t stop crying because I refused to give him my phone.

Time flew and soon I found myself dressing up for the party.
Tristan and I stayed in separate rooms since we got here, things were still different.

I stared at myself in the mirror as I wore my jewellery. The gown had thin straps and a long V-neck that showed off some cleavage.
It was long with a fishtail that swept the ground, it hugged my hยกps and had a long slit that stopped at my mid-th-gh.

I left my hair down after smoothening the ends to make it look straight and glossy.
My makeup was moderate, the gold eyeshadow made my eyes stand out.

I grabbed my purse just when someone knocked.

“Open.”

“Wow, who are you?”
Vina asked as she entered the room.

She was wearing a black champagne tulle gown that fitted her small frame.
Her hair was up in a neat bun and her makeup, as usual, was top notch.

I smiled at her as I posed like a model.

“You go, girl,” she snapped her fingers cheering me on.
I chuckled and walked to her, we hugged and pulled away.

“Have you told him?”

“Not yet but I will tonight.”

There was a light knock on the door.

“Miss Simpson, it’s time.”
One of the maids informed me.

“Okay, thanks!”

Mrs. Sanchester told me this morning we were making a grand entrance since we were the celebrants.

“How do I look?”

“Like a Queen.”
I smiled and headed to the door, Tristan was waiting with Kayden at the hallway.

My gold heels clicked on the marble floor announcing my presence. Tristan’s eyes ran up my body and remained on my face, his l-ips twitched and formed a smile.

He looked graceful and gorgeous in his charcoal black two-piece suit, his dirty blonde hair was brushed back, wait he got a haircut and I never noticed?
It looked exactly like his haircut three years ago.

I smiled back as he tucked his hands in the front pockets on his suit pants.

“Mommy!”
Kayden ran and came to hug my knees.

“Please let’s welcome the celebrants!”
Mrs. Sanchester sยขrรฆmed and everyone applauded.

I held Kayden’s left hand while Tristan held his right hand,

“Ready?”
Tristan asked me hoarsely.

“Yeah, ” I nodded.

We walked down the stairs and everyone began to clap when they saw us.

Kayden started jumping enjoying how we both held him.

“Kayden,” I gr0ร—ned in a low tone but he kept jumping, I took a glance at Tristan to help but he was smiling at him.

I turned my attention back to the people in the room, I didn’t know many of the people in this room.

Everyone applauded as we got off the stairs. I gave them my best smile, Kayden wriggle out of my hold and ran to Nora.

Few people came over to talk to us mostly Tristan cause I didn’t know any of them. They asked a few questions about how we survived the shooting and why my ex tried to kill us, Tristan ended the conversation when he noticed how uneasy I was about the topic.

Mrs. Sanchester gave a touching opening speech, she apologized in front of everyone about what they did to me, I gave everyone a wide smile when they turned to look at me.

Thirty minutes into the party and my parents were still nowhere to be seen.

“Hey, ”
Someone called from behind tapping my shoulder lightly.

I smiled at Tristan who held out a glass of grape wine for me to take.

“Thank you.”

“It’s the party too much for you?”
He asked and took a sip from his Martini.

“A little since I don’t know half of the people here.”
I looked around at the room filled with people in fancy clothing.

“I love your dress, it’s stunning.”

“Just the dress?”
I cocked a brow as I took a sip of my wine, a flirtatious smile tugging at my l-ips.

He smiled and stepped closer his eyes not leaving mine.

“You look as beautiful as always.”
He whispered softly and brushed a stray hair to the back.

“Still cheesy, huh?”
I said stepping back. He laughed and stepped closer again, his eyes raked every curve on my body, I could feel the heat from his body and the lust dancing in his blue eyes matched mine.

His eyes glued to my l-ips, I cleared my throat getting uncomfortable with the air around us.
