It was a fierce battle.
It was one of the fiercest and bloodiest Gus Kukah had ever fought.
The huge green field was now a gigantic mat of slick red blood and dismembered body parts. The attack had begun at dawn, just as Gus had known it would, and he had been ready with the warriors of Densua.
As the Commander of the Densua Warriors, Gus had mapped out the strategy as best as he could considering the sudden and unexpected attack by the terrible Koben Warriors who had been many, easily outnumbering the Densua warriors two to one.
But Gus’ warriors were skilled, brave and disciplined!
The archers were spread out behind on a slight incline and had done the initial damage to the Koben Warriors by sending accurate blazing arrows through their ranks.
Gus had divided his warriors into four and had faced the Koben attack head-on with the group he was leading. Seeing that the Densua fighters were so few, the Koben raiders had been galvanized into rushing forward for the slaughter.
The three other groups of Densua warriors then surged in from both sides and behind the Koben force, effectively boxing the enemies in the middle. Even so, working from the flanks, it was still not easy.
What the Koben warriors lacked in skill and bravery, they made up in sheer brawn and stubborn tenacity, their blood-curdling roars amplified above the mostly silent Densua warriors.
Gus Kukah was covered with blood and gore as he planted his foot on the chest of a Koben warrior he had just slain and pulled out his sword. He spun round into a crouch when he sensed, rather than saw, a movement behind him.
But the man approaching him was a man he trusted.
The man was tall and lanky and covered with hærd muscles. His helmet was off, showing the cold face of a killer. His huge moustache almost covered his mouth.
He was Kobby Obeng, second in command of the Densua Warriors.
“We’re losing good men, Gus,” he said as his eyes swept over the battlefield bleakly.
“Aye,” Gus replied. “And I see these bastards staying their ground and not giving any sign of breaking up.”
“They’ve been tempted enough,” Kobby said as he swivelled and slashed upwards to decapitate a Koben fighter who had attacked from behind. He faced Gus Kukah again.
“Their prince is their resolve, Gus,” he said calmly. “He always draws them back into the fray whenever they’re ready to flee.”
“The huge prince,” Gus said softly.
“Aye,” Kobby replied. “Big bastard. Quite skilled too. He’s causing much damage. Tried to take him on with Addo but that damn Koben prince killed him.”
A pained expression crossed Gus’ face at that.
Addo Mintah had been a great friend.
“He commands the warriors,” Kobby continued calmly. “And as long as he stands, they would not baulk.”
“The head of the snake,” Gus said grimly.
“It is so indeed,” Kobby replied. “Perhaps, the two of us can cut it off.”
“Leave him to me,” Gus said bleakly as his narrowed eyes travelled the length of the field.
Prince Junki Parla of Koben was growling down the field, his huge sword swinging murderously as he fell the Densua warriors around him with ease.
Kobby nodded as Gus Kukah, huge and well-built, began to race down the field towards the enemy prince. The two swords in Gus’ hands were held out as he moved fluidly and sinuously like the finest of flowing water.
Junki Parla bellowed again as he sent two warriors of Densua hitting the field in their final death throes. One of his men shouted and pointed at Gus. The prince turned slowly and faced the approaching warrior with a murderous smile around his l-ips.
Already, a macabre sort of understanding seemed to have been reached because the warriors from both sides drew back as if with a silent command, leaving the two men in the space created.
Gus Kukah was a big man, standing close to seven feet. He was massively developed too and was a giant in his own right, but he was no match in physical appearance to Junki Parla who stood head and shoulders above any man on the battlefield.
Dressed in full armour with a hideous wolf-head helmet, he looked absolutely impenetrable and frightening as he faced Gus Kukah.
With a roar he pulled off his helmet and dropped it and then he pointed his sword at Gus.
“The Iron Warrior of Densua!” he shouted with a disdainful twist to his l-ips. “I have heard of you but today your blood will give an atonement to this battlefield, and they will bury you here without your head!”
His head was massive with a shock of thick black hair. His eyes were too wide apart, set above a huge nose and small l-ips, making his face strangely disproportional.
“Be careful what you wish for, Prince,” Gus said as he increased his speed. “Of all the things you wish for in the world, a piece of Gus Kukah should never be part.”
“A piece shall not suffice to me,” Prince Junki Parla said ominously as he gripped the hilt of his sword with both hands. “I’ll take all your parts in pieces and scatter them across the length of this field with your blood as the tonic for the downfall of Densua!”
Gus Kukah’s run was now blinding as Junki brought his sword curving around and forward in a savage arc that would have decapitated Gus if it had landed on the intended neck area of his neck, but Gus seemed to soar off the ground at the last instant, jumping high and spinning almost majestically as the heavy sword of Junki Parla slashed the empty air beneath his feet.
Junki’s body was slightly thrown off-balance by his own momentum and his eyes opened slightly with shock as he tried to regain his balance for the reverse thr-st, but already he was too late.
Gus Kukah was a man renowned for his prowess as a fighter and many are those who had underestimated his abilities and found out much too late that he was a master.
Already, he was in motion with a reverse thr-st of his own as he buried the sword in his right hand into the neck of Junki Parla! The sharp tip of the sword went into the prince’s neck on one side and exited through the other.
Gus spun back from the giant and landed in a crouch so that Junki’s savage reverse strike passed harmlessly over his head, then he leaped off the ground and sank his other sword into the heart of the giant.
Junki Parla crashed down on both knees and his eyes blazed with incredulity and grudging respect as he stared at the p-nting Gus Kukah standing above him. There was no fear and no defeat in his eyes; Junki Parla was a man of war and knew when he was beaten and when his last breath had caught up with him.
“I will wait for you in the next world!” he coughed out as blood bubbled from his mouth and rained down his neck and chest. “You will not catch me by surprise again, Gus Kukah!”
He pitched forward on his face at Gus’ feet. His massive feet drummed a last dirge on the grass and then he became still.
Prince Junki Parla of the great Koben warriors was dead.
And that effectively ended the fierce battle between the two sides.
