EPISODE 9
That witch called Granny Oklomo indeed became pregnant with the seed of King Daniel Baffour Koduah.
She carried that foetus for exactly nine months, shambling back and forth in her old age and labouring under the weight of that ever-expanding belly. She ate a special diet of horrible nature, and drank only a brew that had no equivalent in the sane world.
These were the longest months of waiting for King Daniel!
The prospect of having a son, an heir, filled him with anxious moments and breathless expectation. As the months dragged by, he became so excited that he barely minded his queen, who was happy for the distraction.
It was becoming increasingly difficult for Sarai to live with the king as a wife should. It did not take her long to realize that the king’s hatred of Dawn made her hate him in turn.
And so, deep in the Black Mountains, Granny Oklomo carried her pregnancy in great strife and difficulty until the first trimester. By that time her old feet became so swollen and painful that she could barely move.
Then, on a particularly horrible night when the wind howled bitterly and thunder rolled ominously time and again across the sky, Granny Oklomo painfully climbed into her bed, closed her eyes, and began to recite some strange incantations.
She did this for a very long time until, when it was getting close to dawn, a burning door suddenly appeared in the middle of the room!
It was a normal-sized door, but it had fire burning along its edges!
Granny Oklomo, weak and sweating and p-nting, breathed with relief when the door opened outward, and three strange, spectral figures slowly came out of the door.
They were tall and willowy, appearing strangely transparent and indistinct, lacking solid presence.
They moved across the bed like smoke, and stood looking at her with long, narrow faces.
“What ails thee, Oklomo?” the one in the middle asked softly.
“I grow weary,” the old hag lying on the bed with the distended stomach whispered. “I grow so weary, Petals. I’m afraid I might not be able to carry this full-term.”
“Oh, but you must, Oklomo,” one of the strange figures said. “Don’t you want to make it to Serenity? This is your last ordeal, maiden. When the baby is born, you will gain entry into Serenity.”
Tears fell down the hag’s leathery and weathered face.
“You told me a trimester was the least I can go and opt for Serenity,” she wailed painfully. “It is the trimester now, and I’m asking for what was promised!”
The three spiritual beings hesitated, and then the one in the middle hovered lower and seemed to smile deep in,side that shapeless head.
“There, there, dear,” it murmured as its spectral fingers moved across the forehead of the hag. “You have indeed arrived at our trimester deadline, so surely, you shall attain heights to Serenity. Sleep, maiden, sleep!”
Teary-eyed, weak, and in excruciating pain, Granny Oklomo’s eyes became heavy, and she fell into a deep sleep that she would not wake from again.
The three spectral bodies hovered around the bulge of her belly, and their hands floated sed-ctively over it, and tendrils of smoke-like energy left their fingertips and entered the hag’s body.
After a while, they seemed satisfied and slowly entered the flaming door again, and it slowly disappeared.
And so the old woman lay there, but she was no longer breathing. After a while, her hands fell limply on the bed.
Slowly, she began to decompose!
Her belly continued to grow, but her dead body continued to decompose. It did not become w-t and stinking, but rather became hærd and dried up, so that after the second trimester, she had been reduced to a hærdened, dry, shell with gaunt jaws and hollow eyes!
The flaming door appeared again after the second trimester, and the three beings came out, and hovered for a long time over the bulge of the pregnancy, sending in sources of energy and gently caring for the baby in there.
By the end of the nine months, the remains of Granny Oklomo was just a skeletal, grinning skull…but her belly was still distended and fresh.
And, on exactly the ninth month, the strange door appeared again, and this time when it opened, a bigger figure dressed in a translucent yellowish outfit stepped out with the three spectral figures.
They fidgeted around the pregnancy for a long time, and finally the yellow figure drew a finger in the form of an arc across Granny Oklomo’s belly. Suddenly, the belly split into two halves, and the yellowish figure picked up a beautiful baby girl and put her in a basket on the floor lined with the softest of silk cloths.
There was no afterbirth to contend with, or any slimy covering to be cleaned like a normal human baby would have.
She lay there, an amazingly beautiful baby girl with the greenest eyes ever.
The three spectral bodies hovered over the baby, and the first one touched her on the forehead with a finger, and suddenly a tiny, brilliant dot appeared on her forehead.
“The Chosen One,” the spectral thing said. “Be safe. Bring us here at the appointed time!”
The second one also touched her forehead.
“You will have dominion over every human,” she said. “All of them will favour you, and do your bidding!”
The third thing touched the forehead of the little princess.
“Have gifts in abundance, gifts that will help your course at any turn, and never know failure!” she said.
And the yellow one put its fingers across the babies face.
“May your beauty never fade until you claim this land for us, in fifteen years, dear princess!”
And then, suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
“The King comes,” the yellow one said. “Time for the Chosen One to begin her work. Let us go!”
And as they disappeared into the flaming portal, the bed that had the remains of Granny Oklomo lifted off the floor and went through the flaming doorway, and then it vanished!
When King Daniel Baffour Awuah entered the room, everything in it was gone except the crib on the floor with the purring baby in it.
He smiled happily and drew near, but when he saw that it was a girl, he uttered a gro-n of fury and stepped back.
“Granny Oklomo!” he bellowed furiously. “Show your ugly face here immediately! I’m going to run you through with a stake for your lies! You diabolical evil woman!”
He was so disappointed!
He had waited nine unbearable months for a boy, a son, someone to bring up with love and train to be heir! And his dream had been shattered by a lying witch!
He turned furiously towards the door, but suddenly the young baby sat up in the crib and looked at him with her wonderful eyes.
The King cried with fear and stepped back.
“What accursed sorcery is this?” he bellowed belligerently. “Surely, I shall burn you to the death before you confound me like that evil of a mother of yours!”
And then, that glittering dot on the baby’s forehead shone brightly, like diamonds, and brightened up the room, and the king watched it with wonder, and slowly his anger dissipated, and he sighed with contentment.
The king smiled gently, reached down, and picked up the baby. He rocked her gently and k-ssed her sweet cheeks.
“What a beautiful daughter you are,” he whispered tenderly with tears of love in his eyes. “Oh, how I have waited for you!”
He carried her outside to the canoe, and soon he joined his warriors in the woods across from the river of blood.
He brought his daughter home, and everyone that saw the lovely baby girl fell in love with her, including Sarai.
She was so adorable, so beautiful, so breath-taking.
And so, in,side the great palace of the people of Densua, this strange beautiful baby girl continued to grow…
And King Dan affectionately named him after his mother:
Grace Klubi.
