EPISODE 23

Deadly Flight

The demonic bird cawed; a screeching sound filled with such evil that it almost tore out his eardrums!

Its legs slowly emerged from its underbelly like a giant plane preparing to land, and Sena noticed with horror that its claws were as huge as the legs of a man, and were as sharp as knives!

Sena was floundering in the air and knew he was no match for the deadly prey pursuing him. He turned over in the air and angled his head towards the descent, not knowing whether he would crash down on hærd land or into water.

He straightened his legs and put his hands flat along his sides, giving his body a streamlined trajectory that pushed through space faster. Sena looked down frantically, hoping to see a landing berth of any sort, but there was nothing, just a vast empty space!

The bird cawed again, and this time it sounded like a triumphant note.

Sena caught a blur of movement to his right and turned his head sharply, expecting to see the bird, but it was a spectral entity that shimmered with radiant beauty, indistinct, but he could make out a beautiful face and the silvery beginnings of wings.

“Breed of the Halos,” came the calm voice from the entity. “Just below you is a doorway. It leads straight to your kingdom. Go through it and be saved! If you refuse to take it, you will surely die from the attack of the Death Bird!”

The huge bird had angled its body beneath Sena, and suddenly its knife-like claws slashed upwards savagely! Sena spun from the sharp claws, but he was not fast enough!

The talons dug into his stomach with a pain so fractious that the Halo Breed scre-med!

The talons ripped through the skin of his hærd stomach, laying it bare! Blood gushed out and away from him, and his intestines began to spill out of his stomach!

The pain was agonizing, and although Sena fought it, tears came to his eyes! He turned over and desperately clamped his hands on his stomach as he forced his intestines back in!

“There’s the Doorway, Son of Gus!” the spectral entity cried.

Sena saw a beautiful silver door coming up directly towards him, and he looked at the blood that had turned his hands red, and his intestines poking out between his fingers!

He was seized with so much terror that for a moment he almost reached out for the door.

“My destiny is to stop the evil of Lord Lastor!” Sena said harshly as the pain racked his body. “As long as I breathe, I hope!”

“Fool!” the entity cried. “You will die!”

“Until my last breath, I hope!” Sena gro-ned.

The Doorway flashed past!

The bird cawed with vengeance; its evil eyes boring into Sena with evil intensity! It turned almost gracefully, then its claws landed on Sena’s back, slashing him with relentless fury as its giant wings beat frantically!

Sena scre-med as wave after wave of excruciating pain suffused his body with each strike of the bird! He could feel his skin hanging in shreds as the bird lay his back to ruin! Blood rolled off his back, and Sena breathed with difficulty!

“Another Doorway to Earth, Halo Breed!” the spectral entity said beside him. “All you have to do is reach out towards it, and you will be free!”

Sena looked, and saw the Doorway coming towards him.

His wh0le body scre-med for release, and for a wild moment his hand almost reached out of the door.

“Until… my … last breath!” Sena whispered in agony. “I hope!”

The Doorway flashed past him!

The bird cawed in a strong, prolonged wail, then it peeled away to the side! Sena thought it was leaving, but it swung around gracefully, and bore down on him again!

It landed on Sena’s chest, then its beak strike down with deadly intensity, causing the young man to scre-m over and over as its iron-like beak broke through his hands until Sena dropped his hand, then the birds’ beak hit him painfully in the stomach and gathered a mouthful of intestines!

It spun away, dragging the intestines along!

The agony was killing!

Sena scre-med black blood as his intestine elongated as it was pulled out of his stomach!

“Another door, Breed!” the spectral entity said. “Save yourself before you lose your life!”

“Begone!” Sena scre-med in agony as his wh0le body burned, and more of his intestines fell out of his belly. “How would it be of profit, if I save myself, and my world dies from Lord Lastor’s triumph?”

“You cannot fight the Keeper of Hades with your hands damaged, and your intestines out!”

“But I breathe, don’t I?” Sena shouted. “That is all that matters!”

And the Doorway flashed past again!

The demon bird screeched with rage and went berserk!

It attacked Sena in frenzy!

It talons tore mercilessly into him, and its beak struck his neck time after time, tearing up great chunks of flesh from his neck.

Sena could only mo-n as the torture almost made his heart explode!

Then, a gut-wrenching scre-m tore out of his mouth as two talons of the bird hit him in the eyes, one talon in each eye, shattering his eyes and appearing at the back of his head!

The bird then flapped its wings and began to flap into the sky again.

Suddenly, a brilliant ray of sunlight hit the bird, and it exploded into a ball of fire, its screeching turning to terror and pain as it flapped desperately in the air as the fire consumed it!

But Sena did not see any of this!

He was blinded, and in agony!

Blood gushed out of his body, neck and eyes!

His hands were hanging limply.

“Another Doorway is coming up!” the spectral entity said. “You’re blind, weak, and losing blood. Surely, you will die! Reach out your hand, Breed. Just reach out your hand and let me lead you to the doorway!”

“If I die here, so be it,” Sena said weakly. “If my body is destroyed, my soul will arise and complete the destiny, and Lord Lastor will fall. Because I breathe, I have hope, and I shall be victorious!”

The Doorway swung past!

And the body of the Halo Breed finally splashed into a cool pool of serene water!

EPISODE 24

Soul

For the very first time in his life, the Halo Breed was terrified!

He was dimly aware that he was floating on water. It was a sort of balm over the horror of fractious pain that was suffusing his body.

But, more acutely, he was terrified by the darkness!

His eyes were gone!

He could not see!

This was not supposed to be happening, was it? He had fought to the best of his abilities! He had stood his ground through the hellish experience within the Hades! And he had not wavered from the path, even though he was without weapons, and exposed to foes no human could stand!

That demonic bird was a case of point!

He had not been prepared for such a predator, and there was no way he could have triumphed over a giant bird in the sky where he was most vulnerable!

He had rejected the easy path to failure even when his very soul had cried out to go through the Doorways!

So, why was he so mutilated?

Why was he so blinded?

Worst of all, why was he dying?

Were there other choices that he could have made that he had ignored?

Was he supposed to escape the bird by going through one of the Doorways that would send him back to Earth?

How on earth could Lord Lastor be defeated if Sena had chosen the easy way?

He had fought on and stayed the course towards the vital Cause, the all-important reason why he was in Hades; conquer Lord Lastor!

“So why am I blind?” Sena tried to scre-m as his body was suffused by sudden rage!

If this was what was going to happen to him, why had he been allowed into Hades? Was this the price he was going to pay by following the spirit of the late king through the portal in the first place?

His hands began to ball up with rage, but he was horrified by the fact that the pains were less intense now, and his heartbeats were beginning to slow down.

He could hear the slow hammering of his heart in his ear as the darkness continued to hold him tight. Now, he could barely feel the water on his skin.

Suddenly, he felt a wild jerking within him as if something had violently separated, and then he was aware of a lifting s-nsation as if he was slowly ascending!

And he was breathing easier!

Then, suddenly, he could see again… and what he saw horrified and terrified him so much that his vision clouded for a moment.

Sena could see his mutilated body lying face-down in a pool of water!

It was a very clear water that was as wide as his eyes could see. The area around his body, however, was deep crimson; he had bled a lot!

He could see tendrils of intestines and flesh floating beside the body!

And the view suddenly became a downward one, and his body seemed to retreat further down slowly!

“What is happening?” Sena tried to shout, but he could not hear his own voice. “What is happening to me? Why is my body going downwards from me? Somebody, please help me!”

But there was nothing, no one!

He tried to look around him, but somehow, he could not turn his head, or change his vision!

But as his body went further down, it dawned on him suddenly that the opposite was true!

His body was not going down!

He was rather rising!

“Goodness me!” Sena whispered with sudden dread. “I’m having an out-of-body experience! My soul has left my body! I must be dead!”

“Out of your body, yes, but you’re surely not dead, Breed of the Halos! Well done, well done! You have passed the Leap of Fate!” a gentle voice said beside him, and this time when Sena turned his head, he saw a very pale but handsome old man floating beside him!

The figure was very bright, so bright that Sena could barely look at him.

And he was winged.

“Who are you?” Sena asked with a little confusion.

“I am Gabriel, your LifeKeeper! On the day you die, you will see me, Sena of the Halos!”

“Then, surely I am dead!” Sena said with rising anger.

“You’re not dead,” Gabriel said. “You were tested by the demonic bird, but you stayed true. That was the Leap of Fate, and you passed! Your body will remain here in the Lake of Life, and it would be repaired and enhanced, ready for you to occupy, if you can complete your call!”

“How can I complete anything in this invisible form?” Sena asked, exasperated. “I cannot even see my own limbs!”

“You are a soul now!” Gabriel said sharply. “You have transcended!”

“Why?” Sena asked hotly. “Why have I transcended? I need my body to survive!”

“No, you don’t!” Gabriel said sharply. “The final leg of your cause is to face Lord Lastor in Hades, and you cannot enter the core of Hades with a human body! He’s been waiting for you, so you will have a little surprise for him when you show up as a soul”

“I am elucidated!” Sena said softly. “Forgive me for my impudence! I understand now!”

“As well you should!” Gabriel said and stopped floating.

Ahead of them was a gigantic, golden gate!

Beyond it was a magnificent, ethereal, celestial palace!

“Welcome to Rest, Breed of the Halos,” Gabriel said. “Here, you’re all alone. You will master the art of holding in your state. After that, a gate behind it will open, and you will find yourself in Hades with Lastor. Once again, well done, Breed of the Halos. You’re an amazing young man!”

“Thank you, Gabriel!” Sena said softly as he floated through the gates to the royal palace ahead of him.

Finally, he was at his last stop!

Somehow, even though he could not even see himself, even though Lastor was in his elements, as formidable as a mountain, Sena was no longer terrified!

This was how it was supposed to be!

He would learn. And he would find a way, and a means!

“What will be, will be!” the Halo Breed said softly.
