EPISODE 10
.
Stanley opened the diary, as first of all flipped through it, to know how big the book is as he knew that he wasn’t much of a reader. He admired the excellent calligraphy and flawless use of it in the book.
.
He then went back to the first page, as he read through her introduction which said.
“HI MY DEAR DIARY, I CONFIDE IN YOU AND PLEASE KEEP MY SECRET”
.
Stanley couldn’t help but smile at her personified reference to the diary.
.
He flicked to the second page, as he began reading it and was a kind of endeared to it.
.
The first page explained how bad she felt at the loss of her mother and how she took the news of her mother’s death.
.
He sighed in sympathy as he read on, suddenly he remembered something, yea it has really been a while he had spoken with his mother, almost two weeks now, this diary reminded him of his mother.
.
He quickly put down the book and picked up his phone and dialed her line.
.
After the second ring she picked up in a hurry, as she started in the normal ways of aged mothers to know how he was.
.
“My son Stanley is that you?”
She asked.
.
“Yes mama, how are you doing?”
She asked.
.
“I’m doing great my son, just that I feel weak this days, as I hærdly use to do what I used to do in those days.
.
She complained and Stanley couldn’t help but smile sadly.
.
His ever vibrant mother was now really aging, yet he himself can’t boast of any achievement to keep her happy at least for the remaining days of her life.
.
“It’s ok mama, I would come see you next tomorrow and we would go see a doctor.”
He said.
.
“OK nwam (my child) but don’t forget to come with your wife to be, I need to see her, you know I’m not getting any younger, I need to see my grandchildren before I die.”
She said in the native Igbo language.
.
Stanley scratched his head in frustration, as he couldn’t find words to reply her. This was one of the reasons, he hærdly doesn’t like calling her because, she would continue bringing up that same issues.
.
” Mamaaaa!!! Don’t you think I’m still too young for that? I’m just still 25 years and still hustling for my future.”
He said and she sighed in sadness.
.
Seeing her mood, he had promised to show her the woman of his dreams very soon, but that won’t be possible on his next visit.
.
He had cut the call, as he sat down alone feeling unhappy and unsettled.
.
Well he couldn’t blame the old woman anyway!!
A woman who had lived to watch five of her children buried one after the other at a very tender age.
.
He was her only surviving child and that was one of the very reasons, she had want him to marry, so as to preserve her a posterity.
.
His mother had really gone through a lot because of him and to make sure he had furthered his education to the university level.
.
She had sold her wrappers, begged, worked to make sure that he was in school, though he had done his own side too.
.
His mother really suffered a lot in the hands of his father.
His father was a wife beater, a drunk, a sadist and a roadside mechanics.
.
He had used his mother as a punching bag, raped her at will, using her as a toy to ease his day to day frustration as a miserable man.
.
Whenever he came to his mother’s rescue, his father would enjoin him in the beating.
.
His mother always had a black eyes and a pink face due to continuous beating and how miserable his father treated her.
.
He never had a happy childhood due to his parents strife.
.
It came upto a point that her mother couldn’t bear it and had to run for her life with Stanley to start up a new life in the slum.
.
It was reported months later after their running away from home, that his father was found dead hanging on the ceiling fan in his room.
.
In his final word in the note he dropped, he had spoken about a huge debt that he was owing and his inability to pay it. That was why he had to take his life.
.
His mother cried over his father’s death, but Stanley felt nothing, as to him his real father had died a long time ago.
.
That was how he had struggled with his mom, to place food on the table and equally pay his school fees.
.
His mother has worked as a primary school teacher, a cleaner just in all to make sure he went to school and the pay was nothing to write home about.
